3 if 4 Uh pairs have advance to quarters Flt 4 Homayun And Ozee lose in 3
Why are Kan and Weaver playing T. Van Winden and Miric? I thought they played (Martin and Monkhouse now appears to be Martin and Zalopany (where is Monkhouse)? T. Van Winden was in the upper bracket against likely Nieto and Kruidof?
Kan-Weaver switched brackets with Kirst-Nieto (LBSU). It avoided a LBSU-LBSU match in the first round.
The bracket is what it is.
T. Van Winden and Miric are the second seeds. their side of the bracket is 2-15, 7-10. Kam and Weaver are 7 seeds.
because of Long Beach State having injuries they had to reseed some of the pairs.
Zalopany is playing with Martin to let a senior (Zalpany) play
Top-seeded Maglio-Schucht eliminated 23-21, 22-20. by A. Van Winden-Nelson.
was just like yesterday where UH pair couldn’t close. Wahine led by sets, had sever set points and a match point.
Kan-Weaver out to T. Van Winden-Miric 14-21, 21-14, 15-13
East Coast bias- FIU over LBSU and even Cal Poly. Committee really wanted to make it East vs. West.
Sorry, so looking at it again, I’m assuming FIU was an auto-qualifier. Then at-large LSU is the East Coast bias beneficiary to the dismay of LBSU and Cal Poly.
Wow at long beach being left out, I wonder what their reactions were when they found out?
Glad the wahine didn’t get the 4 am match that would have been brutal for fans to get up that early.
Not surprised. I thought they might do this last night, but didn’t explicitly lay it out there for them. Was hoping they wouldn’t go there. By making FIU an East bid team over LSU, for the at-large they could weigh LSU’s stronger resume against West teams to get four East teams. But in the seeding, they put FIU at #8, behind LSU. Whoops…
I like that he draw for UH. I think UCLA, USC, FSU bracket would have been a tougher matchup for the Bows.
Thanks. for all the help. was over with the SandBows in their tent watching the selection show.
1. UCLA. 2. Pepperdine. 3. Hawaii. 4. FSU. 5. USC. 6. South Carolina. 7. LSU. 8. FIU
Cal Poly coach Todd Rodgers on the committee. he was very disappointed, said there are solid arguments for the other east teams. said the Big West clearly the better conference. had 3 of the top 6.
12. Right; worked out for Hawai’i.
12. I don’t know. i think they have a more favorable draw but they’ve beaten both UCLA and SC.
they haven’t seen Pepperdine this season. Hard to tell.
Hawaii down to one pair in Zalopany and Martin. Left in the semis. probably out soon.
Hall sent his players home if they wanted go. They leave Monday. Maglio left to go study.
Martin Zalopany out. 21-16. 22-20.
in the final are the No. 2 seed and No. 4. The Beach’s Barber-Karlov and Poly’s T. Van Winden-Miric.
I looked at what a flight itinerary might look like if I wanted to attend, but the timing didn’t fit in with my work schedule. Not too bad…either Houston or Atlanta then to Pensacola.
To anyone attending yesterday:
I thought it looked like coaches (not sure if head coaches) for Long Beach and Poly were arguing for a bit (less than 1 minute) after the elimination match. Anyone else see this?
15. As #2 or #3, Hawai’i still winds up in the same bracket with Pepperdine. The bracket is what it is, I’ve heard. But, if Hawai’i had slipped to #4 and FSU to #3, then Hawai’i would have played USC in the first round. South Carolina is the easier first round draw. UCLA easily gets to the second round. All roads in that bracket go through the #1 seed.
#7 LSU, a bit mercurial, did finish strong. In fact, finishing stronger than #6 South Carolina. LSU could put up a good fight against Pepperdine. A grind ’em out match is possible in all five flights. Either way, should Hawai’i make it to the second round, a LSU or Pepperdine match-up should be better than facing a well rested UCLA that likely coasts to the second round on three quick flights.
Regarding this pair play today…its very very very difficult for UH to put in the mental effort to play this meaningless pair thing. All the energy and focus was to win the BW title. After the win, there is a big sense of relief and the mental outlook of all the UH girls change.
Sure, as a competitor, you want to win all the time but its human to have a letdown after you accomplished your ultimate objective.
Good Luck in Alabama! Go Sandbows!
Wonder if tourney was in Manhattan Beach and not Gulf Shores that both at-large would be from the west?
22. true on many points. But you still want to play well. It didn’t mean anything and players did have a lot on their minds since they knew they’d be leaving Monday and have school work to set up while they are gone.
BTW, men’s All-Americans announced Monday morning some time.
2. Monkhouse rested today. Saw her getting her right shoulder checked by Dr.Kan (Carly’s dad)..She did it to get it rested up for the more important National Championship next week. If she played that would have been an interesting battle between Tiamiric(Poly) vs Monkhouse(Hawaii)..2 top tough Canadians going at it… I am happy she rested. At least Poly gets to go home with something. I feel LBSU and Cal Poly both were deserving to go to Alabama, but I expected maybe 1 of them to go…
Well, now they know how the Hawaii Mens VB team felt…What if Hawaii didn’t win the BW Title? It clearly looks like only the Champion would go cause they still love USC
How can the Big West have three of the top six teams in the country and yet not receive an at-large bid? The politics is disgusting. And I suspect it’s less about east-west balance than it is about putting two SEC teams in the tournament instead of two Big West teams. It appears that power conference bias is already starting to rear its ugly head in beach volleyball, and when the top recruits get wind of that they will start to gravitate to the power conference schools just as they do in other sports. That doesn’t bode well for the Big West in the long run. SMH.
My bad, I didn’t realize the last team in was 10th-ranked FIU, which isn’t a power conference team. So the bias really was geography driven rather than power conference driven. That’s still grossly unfair to Cal Ploy, LBSU and the Big West. Something needs to be done about these selection committees that decide student athletes’ fates based on factors other than their achievements in competition.
Cal Poly, not Cal Ploy.
Let’s hope after this current contract ends, Gulf Shores doesn’t become the CWS Omaha of beach volleyball. Plus there are so many potential (and in some cases, traditional) sites in So Cal and I’d say even Vegas could be a blast.
