Kamehameha highway
Two Kamehameha graduates —Kapono Rawlins-Crivello and Parker Paredes — have been added to the UH football team’s spring roster
Rawlins-Crivello, who is the cousin of UH linebacker Mana Lolotai, played two years for Boise State. He moved back to Hawai‘i in 2008 to care for his mother, a cancer survivor. WAC rules reauired him to sit out two seasons. He will be eligible to play this fall.
Paredess, who transferred from Southern Oregon, is the brother of UH linebacker Corey Paredes.

The Warriors began full offseason conditioning drills this morning.
Sessions were set up for weight training, conditioning and running. The players choose the sessions that best fit their class schedules.
Here’s Laupepa Letuli, who is petitioning to play as a sixth-year senior in 2010:

Will be seeing them at spring practices. 🙂
Good morning Tsaikos. Our prayers for JJ’s mom, Florida Ted.
ST,
did hawaii offer kenny turner over the weekend?
hbomb:
We should have recruiting news in a couple of days.
hi.
top 10.
cheepono out.
I hope that Letuli gets his 6th year and can have a full Spring and Fall without any injury problems. It would be great to see what he could do with a full year of good health…and the UH OL could use his experience and talent.
Feature story on Kody Afusia.

Go you chicken fat, go away!
Go, you chicken fat, Go!
By the way, the link includes a 2:18 video interview with Afusia. Afusia said that they will first try him at center, but if things don’t work out then they will move him to the DL.
John Estes seems to have really helped himself last week. Great job!
Will he be invited to the Senior Bowl?
Think it’s too late for the Senior Bowl.
Next goal: Combine.
Kenny “the burner” Turner
Good Luck for that then!
Healing thoughts for (J)J’s Mom…..

James: Prayers for your mom coming from the ceded lands of Kaupe’a. You are the ‘good’ son, and we pray for your health as well.
Florida Ted: You are in my daily thoughts and prayers as we’ve built a kinship with you as members of this rag tag group of Tsaiko’s. Please keep your focus on getting well. We miss your input on the blog.
I guess Hawaii is not for everyone, kinda shocking actually that he legitimately did not enjoy his trip. C’mon, for a two-day trip, how can anyone be dissatisfied with Hawaii?
Coolio snapshots ST…10 Q!
Good noon–ish everyone!
Morning per the blog clock, afternoon otherwise…
Prayers and love for (J)J’s mom and Fl Ted.

hey, this is better than david copperfield, refresh and voila, 2 mia.
A wonderful Tsaikotic day to all!
Ah, well, “different strokes for different folks”. We’re fortunate if we can separate the Kody’s from the Kenny’s early on. Our best team will be the one who has the passion to be here. Which is why I celebrate the walk-ons.
too bad this isn’t wednesday already.

Re Turner, I think we forget that to many people Hawaii feels like a foreign country. This is more true for people who don’t get out much. Huge areas of the mainland have the same feel, and if that is all someone has ever known, the prospect of uprooting and relocating to Hawaii can be very intimidating. The guy does not know a sole here. It is amazing that Hawaii has any success recruiting anyone other than local athletes or the international athletes. To guys like Turner, Hawaii understandably feels like Pluto, and he is at a loss for what would compel him to leave the comforts of home and everything familiar to him and venture into outer space. Logicially, it makes no sense for him to come here, under the circumstances, when he has other offers. The only hope we would have is when emotions take over, but it is difficult for someone to fall in love in two days when they are recouping from the fatgiue of traveling while knowing the plane out is boarding soon.
is there an official list for the walkons?
Lava…
I went abroad for 8 years and coming back in my 40’s was kind of scary. Born and raised here with over 30 years prior to that, you’d think I wouldn’t have sweated a drop. I can imagine what it can be for a young adult. Some will look at things in a positive light while others will look at things suspiciously and question every thing from an ‘half-empty cup’ perspective. It depends on the person. It is what it is.
I wish him well and am very grateful that the took the time and made the effort to consider UH.
Poho for Pepa. That bradduh get hard luck with injuries. Maybe he can pull a “Blaze” out of his hat and tough it out for one last go around. Bradduh gonna have to change up his workouts this off-season. Get some stuff going where his body can respond to. Same old preparations will typically end with the same results. With the emergence of Hansen, Thomas, LaCount and Leonard, we might find Pepa in a position change if he does come back. Ginlack coming back so looks like we will be looking for one other guard. How bout we make Pepa a running back? haaaaa.
BIK
BiK…
Eh.. I dunno… ..
You know how people are… a lot of dem think pepa-backs are dime a dozen…
But you know… I really think our next bruising RB will come from one of the Defensive players again. It’s interesting to see Reagan Maui’a still bouncing around at the next level trying to get onto the field.
This is a carryover from a question Doc asked on the previous blog.
She was surprised that the City had anything to do with the UH athletic facilities. The reason is that the City Council has to approve the facilities plans for all University sites under what is called a Plan Review Use permit. The City also issues the construction, grading, and building permits for the buildings.
Back to lurking…
going in i think the rb depth will be like this..
alex green, chizzy dimude, jon lister.
hogan rosehill could emerge as the big back.
Elisara? Lolohea? Katina? I think that’s a good call MIH. Fullback is a very imortant position in the NFL. Their are several polynesian fullbacks in the NFL. Just saw one yesterday blocking for Adrian Peterson.
i actually believe that corey paredes could be a great running back in our system. he played some offense at castle and i always liked the way he ran with the ball and was a great 3rd down receiver at that.
elisara was listed as the 7th or 8th big back in the nation by one scouting service.
Nice to see the big boys up and at it. I can’t wait to see how the O-line looks after a couple of years with Gordy Shaw.
pride-
When we were in elementary school, we used to have a copy of that record at our house. I think our mom was trying to tell us something. Did you have to google the lyrics or do you know them by heart?
hmm.. that ad on this page.. identity protection $10/yr. Wonder if it’s any good?
Ya just gotta know that if the coaches wanted, they could find a big back somewhere on our roster. I wonder if they have the commitment to having a bully back the way that JJ used to.
Prayers for Florida Ted, JJ’s mom, and Rich Sr.
mih-
It sounds too good to be true…
DPK..
I know… 10 bucks .. million dollar identity theft insurance… what a tempting offer.
Bess was disappointed with his performance in 2009 despite how he earned a starting spot and established himself in the NFL. He was in the top 2 in the NFL in his key category (first down conversions on 3rd down) for most of the season (I didn’t see the final season stats). Knowing his work ethic, he’ll be even better next season. The link includes a 3:31 video interview with Bess.
Welcome home Parker and Kapono! Always nice to see Kamehameha guys on the team! Imua!
mih-
Make sure you read the fine print! And keep me posted. 😉
So does Kapono Rawlins-Crivello have two-to-play-two.. and Parker Paredes, just one-to-play-one?
DPK… I’m gonna read it.. then sleep on it for at least one night.
As a free agent, Bess signed a two-year contract that expires in March.
He’s a restricted free agent, which means he has no leverage. If the Dolphins want him, he pretty much has to return to them.
But now comes the interesting dilemma. The Dolphins can just pay him the minimum this year, and he really doesn’t have any option but to accept. But the Dolphins also could offer him a multi-year contract that would keep him off the free agent market for a couple of years.
If Bess is confident he will play well in 2010, it is in his best interest to accept the one-year renewal. If he’s looking for security, he probably should seek a multi-year contract. I think he should just take the one-year deal, then test the market. What do you guys think?
MIH:
Right now, he has one to play one. But hes seeking an exemption because of the non-football related circumstances that forced him to transfer from Boise State.
Ian Sample received an exemption based on that same reason.
It should be a slam dunk.
But you know what they say lately: Phi Slamma Jamma.
(For those not familiar with college hoops history, Phi Slamma Jamma was the nickname for the University of Houston basketball team. The team earned the nickname because of the power dunkers on the team. Phi Slamma Jamma was overwhelming favorites in the NCAA title game. But North Carolina State produced a stunning upset. The lasting image is of coach Jimmy Valvano racing around the court, looking for someone to hug.)
Sigh…
Our BB team could use a little 5 slamma jamma, too.
Anybody know about that “team samurai” thing that Parker Paredes participated in, anyway?
or maybe that was a different Parker Paredes..shrug…
phi slamma jamma! i only wish the team would play up tempo, waiting for the break away or a cut to the basket to throw it down rarely happens at UH. Flemmings come close on his put backs or on an occasional lob to the rim where he slams it home, but that rarely happens.
dang it.. woke up the sleeping ralph…shhhh…
ST,
Unless he gets a great offer from Miami, I would think that Bess should sign a 1-year-deal and cash in the following year. However, if the offer is decent he might want to take a 2-year or 3-year deal with Miami for these reasons:
1. Security in case he gets injured. Plus, Miami will give him a big bonus to reduce the cap hit (assuming there is a salary cap).
2. He’ll earn more money next season, which should offset the extra money he could have earned in year 2 and/or 3.
3. Miami drafted 2 receivers pretty high last year and could draft more receivers this year. If they think they will lose Bess, they might draft someone to replace him and then he’d be out of a spot at Miami.
4. Bess seems to have good chemistry with Henne, which could enable him to have a solid career in Miami. What if he goes to another team that has a QB who doesn’t throw well or doesn’t have chemistry with him?
Good reviews of UH commits from Washington–this is from SH.
Good afternoon/evening!
Thank you, Mr. Tsai, for the pix.
You kind of wish Feb 3 was already on us so we could get the LOI’s ASAP… and let out a sigh of relief…
9 days for every team from everywhere o peck.. peck.. peck away at the resolve of your verbal commitments. Meanwhile, you can’t book any more cause your dance card is full, but the guys that were lining up for a dance with you are now looking at that bunch of well-endowed cuties that just walk through the door.
re Bess:
Take the $ and (catch then) Run….
It’s a brutal business; one bad hit, wrong tumble, bad break and….. 🙁
The chicken fat never left me. I think it called all of its friends instead.
Congrats to Tai Papalii, former Kamehameha Oahu and Kealakehe student athlete for doing it the hard way, walking on for second spring and making it with improved 40 and TTest times, and improved grades.
Welcome home, Rawlins-Crivello and P. Paredes!
madeinhawaii,
What about how UH is hosting a U-Dub commit this weekend? U-Dub probably doesn’t want that local DT to decide he wants to play in front of his family and play for UH…
Welcome Home Warriors! Great to have you guys back as Warriors!
I’m not to confident of the Kapono case. I’m hopeing for the best but whenever you deal with No Clue At All, NCAA for short, it’s a crap shoot! Depends on who got the money it seems.
For Bess it is a numbers game ($ i mean.) To effectively leave the NFL with $2Mil should be his cutoff. Don’t get greedy
I’ve been off for awhile. Was the ESPN article about the next ten years view of College FB brought up.
Writer said Utah and Boise would be in Pac 10 and Hawaii and Nevada and Fresno would be in MWC?
Off to a month in Australia and Indonesia this Sat.
I’ll wave to HI
Unless he gets a big multi year deal, the one year would be OK as long as he gets a big injury insurance policy.
Best thing for Bess is not get greedy.
Nytal!
To Kenny Turner. Too bad you didn’t talk to Darrack Branch or Marlowe Lewis. These guys played for UH and came from the mainland, Branch even from Dallas and these guys make their home in Hawaii. He should have talk to them about how getting acclimated to the culture and how they were treated by the people and how they liked playing for the Warriors. But, if you don’t like it we move on. Everything happens for a reason. Maybe we’ll get the next stud running back.
To Devone Bess. Sign for 1 year and test the water for free agency the following year. He’s young yet, so he has time on his hands and he should be getting better and better as the years go by, at least for the next 7 years. The 49ers need a good slot receiver. Life in the NFL is a risky business, so whatever he feels is the best thing for him that gives him some peace of mind can’t go too wrong.
Good afternoon/evening Tsaikos…
Good news…mom is out of surgery and doing well…whew…that was quick…She went in at about 4:45 and was in the recovery room at around 5:05….
Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers!!!!
Okay, talk to you guys later….off to recovery….
Garret,
I know… d*mned if you don’t d*mned if you do, eh?
speaking of which…
Jamora? Feeling better? Hope so!
Also hope you’d reconsider becoming a Warrior and really help bring the program to a solid footing as a perennial WAC champion and D1 BCS buster.
(J)J… that’s so good to hear.
.
James,
great news, awesome news…one day at a time…auryte!!!
Good afternoon gangeez!
Welcome home, Parker and Kapono!
Get well soon, (J)J’s mom!
Just realized, and I know people here will think it’s irrelevant, but had the Pro Bowl been scheduled for the week after the SB, it would conflict with the Olympics.
re Bess – take the year and test the market.
I think there’s a parallel between Bess and Victorino. Look what happened to Shane. He had to play one more year for unrestricted free agency, but could have gone to arbitration.
Not sure if the NFL is structured like MBL
Best to all the Football Walk-Ons for Spring 2010, may you get legitimate opportunities!
To the UH Football Coaches “Close the deals” in recruiting!
Great to hear the Kapono will get to participate immediately due to family reasons in returning to Hawaii. Maybe, just maybe, the WAC has a little “heart” when it comes to his unfortunate situation.
Add, Parker Paredes to the ever growing list of local products who want to return to play for the Warriors. BTW, need to discuss Corey and Parker twin bros, with their Uncle who’s office is next to mine, who are just Freshmen for Castle HS. Both are in the 6′ 5″ height and both are DEs.
Wow. Just imagine in years that UH got NLI from the Paredes twins and the Kaumatuli brothers (Punahou freshmen next year).
All DEs and all in the 6’5″ – 6’6″ range now!!! Just dreaming for 2013 and 2014.
J(J):
A quick surgery is almost always a good sign for whatever ails someone.
Continued prayers, speedy and full recovery for your Mom.
Oh, oh – almost forgot about the “big” DL at Castle who will be a Soph this year? Castle DL may be very good in 2010.
SMU signed a safety out of Blinn College, Justin Sorrell, who had 70+ tackles and 3 int. UH should have kept the pipeline going, Blinn CC was national champs last season. He committed this weekend, so we had time if we were looking for DBs
hawaii credit repair…
I have been looking through these webpages and thought this site was interesting!…
Perhaps those who are totally frustrated with UH’s football recruiting philosophy and process/methodology and commitments to date should ask to sit with Coach Mack and his staff to provide them input on their ideas/ways to keep most if not all “top local players” home and contibute to the Warrior program.
If their plan works, much kudos to them and I will be the very first in line or as soon as possible, to congratulate them for their contribution to UH’s recruiting success.
i like what the coaches are doing to keep the top local boys home, they made sure that they contacted all of them, invited them to camp, invited them to every game, kept in contact throughout the season, made home visits, offered early, etc, etc.
Boise beats Idaho in mbb, both tied for 8 with 1 win, half game behind UH with 2 wins.
al,
I, too, believe that the relationships the coaches are building with the high school staff and students, and they way they are going about it will reap greater rewards in the years to come. We got a lot, if not most, of the top recruits locally to visit and at least seriously consider Hawaii. We have a good number choosing to stay home. We have others wanting to come back to play for the home team.
If they keep doing what they are doing, it will snowball. As long as Mack and Co. can win games and produce winning seasons, all of it will pay off and we will be on our way to a solid D-1 football program.
Kinda wish Davone had a way out of Miami. It is well known throughout the Dolphins organization that they will either take a top notch WR in the draft(Likely Dez Bryant), or worse, trade for Brandon Marshall/Anquan Boldin(Boldin more likely).
Any of those options would deliver a big blow to Davone’s production. Maybe the Patriots will try to trade for Davone now that Wes Welker is all but done with his ACL and MCL tears.
#93 A-House – which Castle DL are you referring to. If you’re referring to the one that UH offered as an 8th grader, he’s at St. Louis.
Welcome to Parker & Kapono!
Nice to hear good news about your mom, (J)J. Will continue to pray for your family.
Re: Davone Bess,
I don’t know that Miami is very trustworthy, period. Don’t forget about their treatment of Samson Satele. While they’re patting Davone on the back in public, they could easily be dealing & drafting for bigger name players or bigger-sized / faster players, despite his good relationship with Henne & Grice-Mullen. Bide out the lame duck year & latch on with a team that really recognizes his potential. There are a lot of teams that know his name NOW.
Congrats to the Beast for being one of only 15 athletes invited to spring ball! We all know Ryan’s going to be a helluva Warrior! Best of luck to all of the rest of the invitees! Stay tuned for a CC coming soon to some unfortunate buffet near you to celebrate Da Beasts conrinued success!

yea nice Work
Definitely agree with what you stated. Your explanation was certainly the easiest to understand. I tell you, I usually get irked when folks discuss issues that they plainly do not know about. You managed to hit the nail right on the head and explained out everything without complication. Maybe, people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks
I don
