Banker set to join Warriors

Once the paper work is finalized — and that could come as early as this morning — Mark Banker is expected to join the Warriors as assistant head coach and linebackers coach. Here’s why this is a good move for the Warriors:

> Experience: Banker was defensive coordinator for Nebraska, Oregon State and the San Diego Chargers, as well as assistant head coach at USC and Stanford.

> Hawaii ties: Banker coached linebackers and special teams in 1995, Bob Wagner’s final UH staff. Wagner praised Banker’s coaching ability, character and affinity for Hawaii. At his ensuing college stops, Banker was used as the point recruiter in Hawaii. He has built and maintained relationships with local coaches and families. I’ve spoken to several people who insist Banker loves to recruit — and he loves to recruit local kids.

> Win-win: Head coach Nick Rolovich had two good choices for defensive coordinator — Corey Batoon and Banker. He managed to land both — with Batoon as the DC and Banker as a top assistant. According to Wagner, Batoon and Banker have known each other since Batoon was a JC player and Banker was coaching at Cal State Northridge.

> Balance: At the end of the 2017 season, no member of the coaching staff was older than late 30s. Batoon is 49, Banker is 61. UH has a nice balance of experience.

Ho, Man — things are really looking up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yes, absolutely love the coaches selected — tons of experience!!!

  2. PONO January 5, 2018 7:26 am

The hires have far exceeded my expectations. Huge pickups.

  3. Stephen Tsai January 5, 2018 7:30 am

They’ve got some more hires that will be impressive. Those will come after the convention.

  4. Ipu Man January 5, 2018 7:31 am

Wow. That’s money in the bank for UH.

  5. Old School Dave January 5, 2018 7:32 am

Good hires by Coach Rolo! Mark Banker brings experience and wisdom (61) to UH. The fact that new DC Corey Batoon and Banker know each other is important in having a staff that meshes and works well together (unlike under Chow). Might be an impetus for SJSU’s D-line coach Joe Seumalo, who worked with Banker for many years at OSU, to be lured back to UH.

  6. burro sabio January 5, 2018 7:32 am

The other key is the hire as OL coach (message to self: DUH!).

  7. Old School Dave January 5, 2018 7:34 am

Na Koa and UH boosters helping out with funding the assistants salaries?

  8. mileHIwarrior January 5, 2018 7:35 am

    Hope indeed! Hanapa’a Rolo!

  9. Boolakanaka January 5, 2018 7:38 am

Cheee, things are looking up. Now for a solid Oline coach, hmmmn

  10. kama krab January 5, 2018 7:39 am

    Howzit Everybody,

Wow Wow Wow. The Bank has finally been opened. Welcome back Coach Banker. Now you can recruit for the good guys again.

  11. kama krab January 5, 2018 7:43 am

Damn Rolo must have been really pissed over this past season cause he’s pulling out all the stops. I had faith that Rolo would but just needed to see the proof. Rolo’s a fighter. Maybe not the smartest, maybe not the prettiest, but braddah going scrap till the bitter end.

Now if he could somehow get uncle Joe and Coach Cav to come back, I going have to take out one loan for fund my seat contribution for my new seats. LOL

  12. kama krab January 5, 2018 7:48 am

By the way, when is the coaches convention?

  13. Haleakala January 5, 2018 7:48 am

    Two thumbs up!!

  14. PONO January 5, 2018 7:55 am

Why are they waiting until after the convention? That would give teams looking for coaches a chance to poach our guys and potentially give them a better offer. Lock em in now.

  15. islandman January 5, 2018 8:02 am

    12. The article says the convention starts this weekend and this one says Sunday to Wednesday in North Carolina.

Looks like the defensive side of the ball is in order, but the offensive side needs a lot of help. Not just coaching adjustments, but some experienced tackles. Hoping for good news in the next couple of weeks. Rolo is getting the job done.

  17. Stephen Tsai January 5, 2018 8:22 am

OK, how many people saw the headline and thought UH was hiring Walter Dods?

  18. Na Alii Pride January 5, 2018 8:30 am

#16 I wasn’t thinking Dods. More like Don Horner.

  19. islandman January 5, 2018 8:35 am

Banker was paid $580,663 at Nebraska in 2016 and $505,008 at Oregon St as DC in 2014.
Clune got $450,000 at Oregon St. in 2017.
    Take that to the Bank.

    #47 Kapakahi from yesterday. and

    #5 Old School Dave –

743 San Jose State Mt. West / Joe Seumalo $105,000

This was Joe Seumalo’s 2017 salary, per USA Today.

  25. A-House January 5, 2018 9:52 am

UH should make real property purchases and rent them out to coaches and/or faculty.

ease the burden on out-of-state people moving in — charge them rent — btw, “faculty housing” on Dole Street full?

maintenance should be a minimum — for example, how many of us spend $$ to re-wire the house or install new plumbing or roof — roof, maybe once in 25-30 years or longer; cooper pipes lasts over 50 years; so does electrical wiring now days.

  26. Old School Dave January 5, 2018 10:39 am

Coaches Vantz Singletary and Mike Cavanaugh used to live in the UH Faculty Housing in Manoa (Lowery Ave), near the Marketplace. Not a bad place to live, in spite of the coin laundry and some problems with break-ins (Security was stepped up). Believe that there is a long waiting line, though.

  27. J-Dog January 5, 2018 10:47 am

#25, you clearly are not a residential property manager. Rental properties don’t maintain themselves.

  28. Old School Dave January 5, 2018 10:52 am

UH Athletics needs to revamp its fundraising efforts and direction that focuses on private donors and not depend on the State for assistance. The State is too busy wasting money on computer systems that don’t work, millions on alternative energy saving efforts that produce no benefits, transforming public housing to luxury units, and a mental hospital where the patients run the asylum.

As a local Makule once told me:
“I think that UH fundraisers are too shy or lack the ability to approach people/corporations that could donate to the athletic program. They’re more comfortable calling up people like you and me at dinner time asking for money.”

  29. HawaiianMantis January 5, 2018 11:02 am

When ST said banker, I initially thought Mitch Kaaialii, formerly of Bishop Gorman, and starting guard on 1992 Holiday Bowl champion. Kaaialii is big whip banker at First Hawaiian.

  30. burro sabio January 5, 2018 11:05 am

Mr. A-House: NO CAN! I’ll explain it to you in person one day.

  31. Abunai January 5, 2018 11:38 am

While I like these new hires…. What I’m worried about is how long will these hires stay put in Hawai’i? Or are they gonna split within a year or a couple of years? In any case good hires and welcome to UH!!

  32. SteveM January 5, 2018 11:53 am

    Lookin’ good!

  33. Manoa Mist January 5, 2018 12:43 pm

Good ideas A-House and Old School Dave. I can tell, that like Miss Momi Lomi Lomi, you guys got the “experience.” Also happy to see more experienced coaches coming on board. Have always loved this saying:

Young Horses go Fast. Old Horses know the way.

  34. cappie the dog January 5, 2018 1:25 pm

    20.

    Absolutely.

Money is the root of all evil.

Cyndi Lauper said it best: “Money Changes Everything”.

  35. cappie the dog January 5, 2018 1:30 pm

During the Kentucky/Northwestern game, they profiled the new Wildcats athletic facilities.

I felt something akin to real nausea.

I respect Vanderbilt and Rice for not selling their souls to athletics.

They’re mediocre-to-bad every year in football…like how Northwestern is supposed to be.

  36. cappie the dog January 5, 2018 1:40 pm

Out of desperation, Laura Beeman decided to play Mackenzie Clinch Hoycard(burning her redshirt year), probably because her post-players are allowing the opponent to matador their way to easy layups.

I saw this during the Hawaii Pacific game.

The Sharks are very much a DII program and they got a lot of easy buckets in the paint.

    Now it’s a trend.

In her first outing, the Australian gathered 4 rebounds in 11 minutes.

I presume Lahni Salanoa is playing injured.

  37. Boolakanaka January 5, 2018 1:47 pm

#35 Yup, as much as I love sports, it’s a shame what some of these schools are doing. Good for Aranda to get 2.5 mill a year, but at a Public University? That is plain ridiculous, especially in a state that’s that ranks near or at the bottom of education—just a plain shame.

Now if you look at the difference in graduation rates between say Vandy, Rice, Northwestern as opposed to Kentucky or LSU, it’s a world of difference. The aforementioned schools have 5 year graduation rates in the low 90s, the later in the low 60s. LSU needs to establish some priorities .

  38. islandman January 5, 2018 1:55 pm

Beeman was saying early in the season that she was hoping for Hoycard to be ready for the Big West conference games after recovery from injury. So doubt she wanted to redshirt her. She had 2 rebounds 2 FT’s and 1 assist in 10 minutes

  39. A-House January 5, 2018 2:09 pm

    burro:

UH get enough “kala” to build more “faculty” housing to accommodate faculty and sports coaches?

wonda how much cost to hire a property manager to “manage” the property?

  40. clyde January 5, 2018 2:20 pm

My two cents: Banker’s a great hire, along with, of course, Batoon. Unless Rolo shakes up the staff with reassignments (which might not be a bad idea), that leaves three more hires.

Would that be WR, OL and DL? Seumalo was DL coach at OSU for nine years when Banker was the DC. Seems like a sensible hire unless Batoon has someone in mind. We could use a coach who has experience recruiting in Samoa.

I wonder if Batoon plans to take a specific part of the D, or just oversee the whole operation.

  41. 808WarriorFan January 5, 2018 3:02 pm

Joe Seumalo would be a very interesting hire … just a gut feeling that “Rolo” is holding John Estes as a “just in case” hire if he can’t who he wants for the OL Coach … great hire w/ Mark Banker … guess I will renew my season tickets …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS … !!!!!

  42. clyde January 5, 2018 5:01 pm

So, did Batoon & Banker get their first verbal pledge … Jahlani Tavai?

  43. Na Alii Pride January 5, 2018 5:03 pm

#40 – I the 10th coach gives schools the flexibility to let coordinators be coordinators without bing a position coach too. I think you’re right that it will be interesting to see how Rolo uses that 10th coach.

  44. clyde January 5, 2018 6:10 pm

#43: I suppose they could also not fill the 10th position, and spread the extra money (that they don’t even have in the first place) among the nine coaches or to boost the pay for new hires such as DC Batoon and AHC Banker.

  45. ccalpo January 5, 2018 6:21 pm

,,,Rolo’s love of the island’s and to the people of Hawaii…will always be a winner to most Hawaii fans…we will keep believing in the U of H football team…still all in with Coach Rolo and his coaches….

  46. Warrior Dave January 5, 2018 6:25 pm

    #37 Boolakanaka,

I wonder how much money is pledged by LSU donors, only because of the success of the football team? I’m guessing it’s a huge amount in addition to SEC television contract.

  47. haka January 5, 2018 6:31 pm

Exciting coaching hires. Hope they influence a few sweet recruits to become Warriors. Jahlani will be back! The team needs full fan support! Go Warriors!

  48. Maddog50 January 5, 2018 6:55 pm

Very happy with what has transpired with new hires. Sounds like more to come. With experience and higher caliber comes more talent and more competitive team. We should be real excited about this! GoWarriors!

  49. kapakahi January 5, 2018 7:09 pm

#5 Banker coached with Seumalo for 9 seasons at OSU.

  50. Inyoface January 5, 2018 7:24 pm

Jesse sapolu for o line coach?

  51. UH4eva January 5, 2018 7:27 pm

Oh man I’m getting pumped. I cannot wait to see who else Rolo is going to bring in..

    Great hires; keep them coming!

Happy New Year! Can you help me reach my goal by making a $25 donation to the UH Foundation Fund I created for UH Football recruiting–see below link. If 2000 fans do this, we will raise $50,000. So far, I got 152 donors, 1848 more to go–each donor spot represents $25.

#51 … seriously? Props to the donors, but long, repetitive list seems a bit much.

  54. kev-1 January 5, 2018 10:40 pm

Was Banker a candidate for the UH head coaching job the round that Chow got hired? I seem to remember that name as a finalist. No? I could be remembering it from somewhere else.

  55. H-Man January 5, 2018 11:20 pm

I think each entry represents a $25 donation, so if someone donated $100, the name is shown four times. Rick Nakashima is shown 10 times, so that means he donated $250. Anyway, that’s what I think what is represented by the name repetition.

  58. Hank January 6, 2018 8:04 am

#28 You’re kidding about the mental hospital right?

I’m sure you know that Hawaii has historically underfunded the treatment of the mentally ill. A class action lawsuit was filed in 2014 by hospital employees because assaults were happening every three-days. In the 1990’s, Hawaii was sued by the federal government for the inadequate treatment of our mentally ill children (look up Felix). It took about 10-years for the state to get up to par with everybody else. So to say that our politicians are wasting their time spending money on the state hospital and the mentally ill is incorrect. Historically, we have done the least possible. There has been movement recently, but it wouldn’t be happening if the press didn’t find out about Randall Saito.

Meanwhile, we approve a 350-million bond for the “partial” funding of rail. I bet we could buy a pretty nice on-campus stadium for 100-million.
