With BYU losing in 5 to baylor, the tourney title will go down to a set differential.
Hawaii would need to sweep Nevada. Then it goes to point differential between BYU, which also swept the Wolf Pack
Nevada scored 58 points on the Cougars

Basically then, UH has to sweep with average set scores of 25-19 or better.
yep, allow fewer than 58 points.
Starting for UH, Howling, Granato, Sibley, Iosia, Kahakai, Castillo, Maglio.
Kahakai needs 16 digs to pass Eagye for No. 8 on UH dig list.
three UH hitting errors has Nevada up 5-1. TO WAhine.
Cindy, thx for finding out the tie-breakers.
How come no Natasha tonight?
Maybe because they don’t need her height against Nevada.
Whole team looks like they have a hangover.
Sibley played well last night but don’t think she’s the answer at opposite, doesn’t have the arm.
Wahine out of negative hitting. Castillo’s kill has Hawaii pulling to 13-12. TO Nevada
6. Natasha provides more offense than the freshmen though.
I think a bit of a letdown was to be expected after last night.
Maglio kill gives Hawaii’s its first lead since 1-0 at 20-19. TO Nevada
UH takes set 1 25-22.
Mckenna G has been playing really great , hitting hard and smart, hope she keeps it up.
The coaches have to improve the serving. Last year, the team averaged 1.87 SEs per set. So far this year through the first set of this match, 2.12 per set. And a lot haven’t come from jump serving.
Granato hurt her left hand?
14. yes, she hurt it going for a dig late in Set 1. it’s taped.
why no Burns? don’t need her. giving Howling a shot.
UH up 15-13 at the TTO
stats went down. UH up 18-16. TO Nevada
Iosia needs to not take the easy first balls, let someone else get it
Howling on the over pass. it’s 21-18. TO Nevada
I can’t tell if UH is playing down to Nevada’s level, or if Nevada is underrated despite its size.
Hawaii up 24-21, Nevada has pulled to 24-23 on Kahakai’s net serve and an ace. TO UH
Maglio with her ninth kill. UH wins 25-23.
Cindy, do you think granatos injury could be serious? It seems fine but you never know with these things. Hopefully shes ok!
I’m wondering if the point differential covers all matches, not just the Nevada matches. If so, BYU is +19 for the tournament. Right now, UH is +3. So UH would need to win by at least 25-8 to win the tourney title.
If we are only looking at Nevada matches, UH needs to win set 3 by at least 25-12.
In either case, I think BYU will claim the tourney given how UH is playing tonight.
my understanding is it was point differenential against Nevada
agree unless UH wins this 25-12, title goes to BYU
UH up 13-6 TO Pack
Kahakai has passed Eagye for No. 8 in all-time digs for Wahine.
Surprisingly to me, UH still has a shot at the title if they can continue to double up on Nevada
Cindy, if UH wins set 3 25-13, then UH and BYU are tied on this tiebreaker. What is the next tiebreaker?
tiebreaker update
It was set differential, which had BYU and Hawaii tied.
Then it went to head to head since it was a two-way tie.
Cougars win that won.
TV is confused over tiebreakers…lol
UH wins 25-12.
Mckenna seems fine to me.
Wish wahine recruited that Baylor opposite lol
Opposite will be a revolving door it seems, wouldn’t mind Coach Robyn trying a three middle offense with one of Skyler/Sophia and Mags and Natasha, more height and big block to shut down big west left side hitters.
Ha, kinda wish it was the points tiebreaker, UH would have won the tourney
Cindy, does BYU not playing sunday matches because mormon beliefs have anything to do with the schedue, as well as utah because utah has a heavy mormon community
What is the Sunday play policy, or “BYU rule”?
NCAA rules state that if a university competing in an NCAA championship has a written policy against competition on a particular day for religious reasons, the championship schedule must be adjusted to accommodate that institution.* Brigham Young University has a written policy against Sunday play, and therefore will have schedules adjusted to play on Saturday or Monday, even if it involves changing televised or otherwise broadcast events.
In April 1998 the NCAA Division I Board of Directors struck controversy when it attempted to eliminate its long-standing policy that allowed for some flexibility with regard to Sunday play. Only BYU and Campbell University of North Carolina objected to the rescinding of the rule, which was left in place. The rule calls for teams to formally register their refusal to play on certain days with the NCAA before the season starts, and the NCAA must respect the no-play policy for Sundays.
*From the NCAA official website at http://www.ncaa.org
32. Utah has no rule against playing on Sunday. Did you forget UH lost to them this past Sunday? Utah has 4 more Sunday matches this season.
My apologies, Forgot UH had a break between two days
Utah is not a church-affiliated school. It is a state school.
If it had been on point differential in the match vs. common opponent Nevada then UH allowed the Pack 57 points, the Cougars 58.
Just got back from the match. Nevada kind of gave up there at the end. They still had one more time out and the Nevada coach never even bother to take it. Weird seeing all three of our setters in the game at the same time. Maafala setting Iosia was unreal. BYU wins the tourney title with BYU’s Miller MOP as I predicted in the previous thread. Granato & Maglio on the all tourney team along with Nevada’s local girl Shayla Hoeft……
Hoeft from Maui was recruited by Oklahoma, BYU, Auburn, Temple, Denver, Portland and Hawai`i Pacific, per her bio and Chris M. mentioned some of those.
From Post game shows insight: Scott Wong was the one who convinced Dave to recruit Maglio.
Dave said that he found that the encouraging method is the best way to coach nowadays, unlike Riley Wallace’s earlier style. Lisa said that when she played, Dave was not a very good communicator but there were assistants to do it.
He did a good job on the post-game shows.
Cindy: can you ask Robyn why she allows granato to continue to serve? 2 more service errors last night. Thanks
One RPI list has Cal Poly at RPI 62 ? SOS 73.
UH at 164, SOS 69.
Besides beating Wichita St, Cal Poly defeated Santa Clara RPI 88, SOS 29.
But this RPI list was before recording their win vs Wichita St and before UH’s win vs Baylor, i think.
F.Y.I. – Burns aggravated leg injury (kept out as a precaution). Howling and Williams are works in progress and have good potential with ,more playing time. Castillo has potential (but needs to start faster and focus).McKenna G is McKenna G–atomic arm , but needs to stay in focus. She , also needs to move her feet on defense (not in balance). I think Sibley will get better with more playing time and McKenna R. was a darn good move (back row sub for Casey). She digs and passes better and also is an offensive option. Hoping to see Janelle and Shaney (if not redshirting). Shaney could be Nikki’s Taylor’s heir apparent. Anyway—————-GO BOWS
I really enjoy seeing so many Wahine getting a chance to play. Settling in, I see Kendra and Kirstan sharing the rt. side. The emergence of Castillo and the dramatic improvement in consistency by McKenna has set the left side. We have 3 good plus 1 great middle blocker to choose from. We have 3 good and one great defensive specialist. And we have a potential All-American setter. The coaching staff are improving daily along with team. We will some one’s night mare when we go to the NCAA’s. I also agree that beating Baylor helped in abolishing the downward spiral of the “self fulfilling prophesy” of losing at the end.
Still too early to worry about RPI, but one projection has UH with an RPI rank of 42 with a 17-10 season record (as of 9/4/17). UH has a good non-conference schedule, which will boost its current ranking as teams like BYU, San Diego, South Dakota and Utah have really good seasons.
Per http://ncaastats.figstats.net/volleyball-rpi.cgi , UH’s adjusted RPI rank is 118 with the 70th best SOS. Poly is ranked 35th with the 82nd best SOS. Poly is higher because of its 7-2 record vs. UH’s losing record.
To repeat what I said a few days ago, root for Poly other than when they play UH. We want Poly to be a good RPI team that UH has the opportunity to beat (UH is 0-4 vs. Top 50 RPI, no results against Top 25 RPI). UCR and UCI, despite high current RPIs, are going to fall in the RPIs as the season progresses–they will have a poor non-conf SOS and will lose more in the BW. The other teams are just not good right now.
43. Thanks for the explanation. I thought some persons said Cal Poly played not too tough a schedule. But i see they played ranked Washington, Oregon and Wichita St. while UH played UCLA, BYU, San Diego and Utah.
In the last poll, Cal Poly was receiving some votes and also Baylor.
40 thought I had answered about Granato Serves, in passing rotation
Gives s 3- meter attack option
They aren’t going to sub her out
Not sure why question over BYU came up
Cougars scheduled for RPI reason Aliso schools try to bring local girls home during their careers
UH accommodated BYU
Not playing on Sunday
This wasn’t an NCAA run event It was UHs and their invitations
Bottom line is if the tournament had been played in a Sunday BYU wouldn’t have come out
