Bruin reunion
It will a homecoming of sorts when the Warriors travel to L.A. to play UCLA this Saturday.
Offensive lineman Fred Ulu-Perry, of course, started his college career in Westwood. He said he enjoyed his time there and made friends, but that Hawaii was a better fit. He transferred to UH in January 2016.
Cornerback Zach Wilson also was recruited by the Bruins. Instead, he attended Mount San Antonio College as a part-time student for the 2015 fall semester before enrolling at UH in January 2016.
Cornerbacks Cameron Hayes and Rojesterman Farris II also were high school teammates with UCLA players.

It was a lively Tuesday practice for the Warriors. The emphasis was on UCLA, with the top units working against the scouts portraying the Bruins.
Nick Rolovich freshened the practice when he ordered the sprinklers turned between sessions.

Not sure if there’s time to do it this week, but if you have questions, please submit them and we’ll see if we can get them answered for Thursday’s paper.
Let’s hope Fred has a great game!
Another cool idea by Rolo!
Go Warriors!
I’d like to see a special teams play w/ all of our Rugby players. They could do a hybrid play and even have the pulling linemen get a pitch.
I find it surprising that UH is 2-0 to start the season and both ESPN experts do not have UH predicted for the Hawaii Bowl.
Below is from ESPN.com
“Hawai’i Bowl
Hawaiian Tel Federal Credit Union Field at Aloha Stadium, Honolulu
Dec. 24, 8:30 p.m. (ESPN)
Bonagura: Tulsa vs. Air Force
Hale: UCF vs. Colorado State”
For Coach Rolo: Have you given any thought to having Max Hendrie handle kickoffs? He’s used to kicking footballs, and he seems big and strong enough to put the ball in the end zone.
What’s the status of Ursua?
HALLELUJAH! Warriors are 2-0 going into UCLA who had one of the greatest all time comebacks in collegiate football history. As a team we have not been firing on all cylinders yet, with flashes of brilliance breaking though predictable mediocrity. This could be the game that turns the corner for the team and the program. GO WARRIORS!
Coach, how can we get Tui Unga to be more involved in the offense? Thanx

GO WARRIORS and good afternoon Tsaikos..
Planning on watching the game at Blue Tropix (the old Denny’s) at Pearlridge…..probably there around 10:30…if anyone wants to go who isn’t going to UCLA.
Two thoughts:
1, When and if the coaching staff will make a QB change if Dru plays like he did v.Western Carolina. IMO, it wasn’t a bad day at the office. I thought there was something was wrong with Dru. Hoping whatever it was is long gone.
2. Will they run Diocemy into the ground where he is prone to get hurt? He had 25 carries in 3 quarters last game. I saw him take himself out of the game after he was cleared to return from a suspected concussion. Ryan Tuiausoa replaced him and played well.
ST: I thought UH had a freshman PK….Did he drop out of school? I noticed he wasn’t practicing be the game. Why isn’t Isaiah Bernard or Stubblefield playing at WR to get more speed out on the edges. ewaliko
3 primary concerns leading up to this game:
– Secondary (DB’s won’t survive on an island)
– Missed tackles
– Passing game (Brown is either favoring that one slot position, or the outside receivers cant get open/separate.
Errr…before the game. Ewaliko doesn’t run good routes & Barker is too slow.
I like the trick play when the team is way to one side of the field, and does a mass substitution but keeps one lonely receiver just a foot in
off the bench far away from what’s going on the far side of the field
unseen by the defense. Paul Johnson did that for the yellow jackets one time and scored…
Also like doing the 2-minute end of game offense
during the entire game.
Is there a way to get the PA announcer to help liven up the crowd? If he would tell the people when/how to cheer, more of the younger crowd would feel more involved and help increase the fun factor. Say for instance, the kickoff. They play the music, but the crowd doesn’t do anything. We should at least rhythmically clap. We need to do something to make attending the game a more attractive option.
See you this Saturday in section 7 row 13 Aloha.
UH 24 UCLA 38
Andrew,
Maybe ESPN is predicting that UH will play in a major bowl. Just kidding.
Just a thought but Western Michigan gave USC a game-right now UCLA is not at the same level as USC, they were 4-8 last year and don’t return a ton of starters. After watching UCLA replay twice—-they were more than a little lucky to comeback as A&M secondary just went through the motions in 2nd half. Barring a travel meltdown I expect a good game Sat and even a …………GoWarriors
Great Evening All!
Love the one you’re with…
Das it
MD50, I can’t wait for the day UH can beat a team like UCLA (this century). But Warriors’ showing on Saturday did not help boost my confidence.

I don’t think a lot of the football experts at ESPN watch Hawaii football. They probably feed off each other and ask their coworkers about Hawaii football. The coworkers probably got their information from someone else. If the source of information was tracked, it could be traced back to someone who saw Hawaii play AF in the blowout loss at Aloha Stadium or another game during the chow era.
Hawaii will surprise some teams this year. I have no guess for the ucla game. But, I think Hawaii will have a good showing.
H-man, Iam am the eternal optimist when it comes to certain things like Warrior FB-I realize there is a talent differential and we are a year or two away from having the talent and depth to compete with almost anybody. That being said I think we have enough right now that if the stars align properly we have a chance to win. I will not be be surprised at the outcome, close game, upset, blowout. Every one of theses is an option when you play a game like this-I remain optimistic for an upset-I fondly recall a 50 point underdog coming home victorious over a PAC-12 opponent! Anything is possible GoWarriors!!!!!!
Coach Abe, Please start someone else for DB#14. UCLA will light this guy up, no way this guy is first-unit player.
Q: Does the HC coach make final decisions on who plays or does that fall under the position coaches?
#26 Friendly reminder, our boys are not NFL players, and so calling them out by name, is not pono. These are just college kids, not part of the office fantasy football office pool. Further, I would hate for one of these players very large uncles (and yes he has a couple) to call you out in public in front of your own ohana, which is exactly what you are doing at this moment.
ST…
What was the average starting field position for W. Carolina after a UH kickoff?
I heard some callers after this past game questioning the UH special team play. Especially during the kickoffs. I go to all the UH home games and I thought the special teams played well against W. Carolina. The blocked PAT was more of adjusting the alignment of the blockers, then someone missing a block.
GO WARRIORS! BEAT THE BRUINS!!!

this blog is some what “political” in nature in that comments are expected to be always on the “positive” and any “negative” comment(s) is/are not acceptable
i find nothing wrong with negative comments as they can be turned into positive ones — i do agree that this blog has NO place for any one who is ‘MEAN SPIRITED’ like several posters in the past
i also do not agree with certain opinion that a particular player is the “best” when on-field actions show otherwise — missed assignment, tackles, slow to react to a ball carrier, etc.
i believe, like some others, that certain players who appear to have the talent/skills are NOT being used by their position coach — if the player has difficulty running routes or misses too many blocking assignments, it it okay to post an opinion here? can the position coach correct the players mistakes?
here we go into the wild blue yonder sailing high into the sky
nope, this is not the USAF song — it’s about Hawaii fans who are leaving today for the UCLA game with thoughts of an upset or firmly believe UH will prevail
Can we please stop using/referencing other school’s fight songs? 🙄
Just stick with our own hellish Co Ed or whatever the heck blandly named clownish-circus tune we have suffer with.
Thank you
UCLA”s Jacob Tuioti-Mariner is Lafu’s youngest bro and Tony’s nephew
Maybe Norm Chow will be at the game
Tumua Tuinei’s uncle Mark played 2 seasons with the Bruins before transferring to Hawaii
Other’s who started as a Bruin before coming to Hawaii:
Iuta Tepa and Jeremy Castro
Steven Lakalaka choose Hawaii over UCLA
Tui transferred with a host of UCLA players, including, Bernard Quarales, Anthony Edgar, and Danny Lei.
Some, refer to UCLA as “Ooklah”
Local Reggae Band “Ooklah the Moc” got its name from the character of the same name in the Cartoon “Thundarr the Barbarian”

When Hawaii’s Genta Ito eventually gets some playing time, he will possibly be the 2nd Japan-Born player to play in a D1 game. Right behind UCLA Olineman Gyo Shojima who saw action last season
Ah. You fine people want music? Here. Posthumous George Michael record to be released tomorrow! 😳
Get it at your local public restroom! 😜

will there be another UCLA player transferring to UH in the very near future?
Coach Rolo and his staff appear to be making major strides in getting better players into the program
waiting for Hendrie and Genta and Timoteo to get more playing time
can’t shake the feeling that the Aussie now playing ball on the east coast will sign with UH come 12/2017 — also, UH going to Citrus or Sugar bowl game in 2018 — gonna have to “rob” piggy to pay for the trip!
any possibility for UH to schedule the middle of any Power5 conference teams to start and/or end the season? seems only the top 3 go to major bowl games
@30
Col-san, we seem to go through this discussion every year and I know you’ve read it ad nauseum, so you can choose not to read the rest of this post.
ST has allowed this blog to post opinions with little interference except for extremely poor taste or blog rage. It has been the bloggers themselves who have defined the generally accepted rules and mores. For instance, “The paid coaches are fair game. The student-athlete is not” is generally accepted across the basketball, baseball, soccer, and volleyball blogs. If the blogger has a problem with a specific player and just has to have an answer, the probable solution is to email the proper coach and ask.
From time to time, reminders are posted that players and their families often read blogs, especially in this age of electronic media. And I would add, so do potential recruits and their friends/families. An honest review of Hawaii’s appeal to a recruit would reveal little to offer in terms of national spotlight or facilities. IMO, it’s the ohana environment and local support that’s the most telling. So, like it or not, this blog can be influential. And may we be reminded that everyone is entitled to an opinion. But expressing it appropriately is a fine art we should forever be trying to master. I am also constantly reminded that when I point at anyone, there are 3 fingers pointing back at me. So, I will stop now before my soapbox collapses…

#38 BigWave, I’ve heard that UCLA stands for “U C a Lot of Asians”.
With the exception of the football and other athletic teams.
bg—Lucid and cogent–mahalo nui, and most of all the families thank you.
Some folks think I am joking, but some of the families of the players do actuallyread this blog, and when you call-out their son in public, well, I know for a fact, that it can be quite upsetting–and no one wants to get a tap on the shoulder by one big local bruddah, and have him sternly look you straight in the eyes, while he says “you get one problem wit my son??!”
Lets avoid that unpleasant occurrence….#blogon
UCLA LB Jayce Smalley is fromy Kaneohe, went to St. Louis, before graduating from Servite High School. Dad Tony also went to Servite before coming to Hawaii to play for Tony Sellito”s HPU Basketball team. Dad Tony also played alongside another Smalley, HPU legend Llewellyn Smalley.
Servite High, home of our former AD Jim Donovan and one of my best boys from college, and hardest pound-for-pound hitters, James Elias (Rocky’s younger brother).

38 BigWave, I’ve heard that UCLA stands for “U C a Lot of Asians”.
I read somewhere that UCLA and Cal Berkeley has about 32 -34% each of Asians.
Cal Tech has about 42%.
… just adding …
Others with UH ties and currently at Servite High:
WR Denny Flanagan – Hurdles Coach
DB Ray Bass – Speed Coach
Beat the UCLA baby bears!

Supposed to be on a plane to PDX Saturday afternoon to get a meeting near the Columbia River Gorge next week. With all the fires and ash, it may get postponed or change location.
I have relatives in Miami & St. Croix. Please think good thoughts for them.

I am not a robot (I think).
Whoa and former Warrior RB #1 Mike Bass is now the Servitude OC. Mike once sported “Nasty” on the back of his helmet pay honor to his injured teammate Nate Ilaoa

It’s already been a crazy college football season, so I’ll go on a limb here. UH has shown to play well, at times on offense, on defense, and on special teams. Everybody has been contributing, a team effort. What they have to do better is to keep the penalties down, win the turnover battle, win the kicking game, do well on 3rd down, and make some big plays and they will be in the game til the end. It might come down to a simple play, or a crazy play. UCLA as seen can be hot and cold and my hope is that they are taking us lightly. But, they have very good players, 3, 4, and 5 star type recruits all over the place. I hope UH will get some breaks because I think we can win this game if the team sticks together. I’ll call it, UH 31, UCLA 30 after a touchdown pass by Brown to Unga, and extra point by Trifonofitch with 5 seconds left in the game. Now, let’s pray.
UC Irvine has most Asians of any UC school, at 45%
