Koelsch getting a start at OH, along with Granato, Williams, Iosia, Kahakai, Maglio MH, Castillo OH.
Robyn is stubborn and going with pretty much the same starters in different combinations
2. she says she’ll put the best 7 in. Koelsch starting is new. Greeley now in to play back row.
and they’re up 8-6.
2. Stubborn might have been using Ross.
Wahine up 12-7. TO UCLA
Wahine 8-0-9, .889. UCLA .300. 6-3-10
4. Agreed maybe she found the right combo. Glad to see Greeley in the back row.
Keep up with the good passing, Wahine.
Granato 6-0-8. UH up 18-13. TO UCLA
Greeley with an overpass that UCLA puts down. Bruins have closed to 18-15. TO UH
SO happy to see Greeley in. Team seems looser somehow today — in a good way.
UCLA challenging no touch call on Buechler’s attempt.
Kalei. Casey swinging better. Coach smart. Not panicking. Too many changes not needed.
touch called. it’s 21-19
come on wahine! dont give up!
Granato with the ill. UH wins 25-23
yes! keep it up wahine!
Mags the digging machine.
Granato 10-1-17
why was magnum subbed out from the back row and kalei model g mia again?
Granato blocked twice, UCLA up 12-8. problem in this rotation Iosia doesn’t have a lot of front row options and they have Greeley and Anderson in the back row. TO UH
That was a great rally but lets be honest, twice UCLA could have been called for lifts… gracious the refs are today….
Chun letting a lot of loose stuff go on UCLA side. Maglio with a kill, UH within 16-15
Great rally. Great hammer by Koelsch!
Granato 17th kill. UH takes its first lead at 17-16.TO UCLA
My bad. Granato with 14
Granato blocked. it’s 21-18. TO UH
UCLA ends it on with an ace on miscommunication with Granato and Castillo both going for it. 25-23.
Just need to pass better. Can be fixed.
Argh, what the heck was that last play? Anyway, looks like they took to heart the post game practice last nite. Glad they are swinging harder and playing with urgency. Inexperience the last couple of points but HEY we are playing a heck a lot better then the past two nights so I’m happy. Go Wahine!!!
Will we see an adjustment on the rotation that is just before the one in which Iosia serves? Sorry, don’t know a better way to describe it
PS are others getting those picture verifications every post?
‘Bows are playing much, much better. They can win the Big West with this type of performance.
31. Generally, yes, the picture stuff comes up. Very irritating.
Is Greeley only playing back-row? I thought she re-injured her shoulder and thats why she didn’t play the previous two matches? Hope she can keep it up and tay healthy b/c it seems to be making a difference.
34. Back injury is the issue that was keeping her out.
Finally able to post, This is how Granato needs to play for UH to go back to the NCAA tournament, hope she keeps it up, tooling the blocks more.
Kalei helps the passing, still wish Emily and Casey would switch positions Mags needs more sets, the sets she is getting now in the middle are off.
May for the Bruins looks like Nikki already, she is going to be a problem for the next three years.
These long rallies are great stuff. Love the fire.
Yes, it has been a challenge to post which may explain how quiet everyone is on this blog.
Exciting to watch the wahine tonight. They are a different team tonight.
Not a criticism but a question, why are more of the sets to Williams looking better than the ones to Maglio when she is playing middle?
39. It probably hasn’t more to do with the passing
alright wahine. funs over. fight to survive.
Let’s go, bows! You can do this. It would be a great comeback
hey where emma smith go anyone?
UCLA has sticky fingers. That was a lift.
Passing is SOO much better then last nite, able to actually run plays, which is awesome. And we haven’t loss the other 2 games by much, UCLA has to fight for it, we aren’t rolling over and just handing it to them.
43….she plays for Cal Bears
43 smith transferred to a UC school.
Need more Mags. (And fewer captchas)
Sponcil should have been called for being over the net in that one handed set, she is in the backrow.
Whats up with Iosia’s connections with Maglio tonight, way off all night :/
Kendra and Casey have come up huge, hope they play like this all season.
Really glad for Koelsch after all her backup play. Need better connections for Mags tho.
Koelsch and Castillo appear to be hitting a lot harder than they did during the last two matches.
yes! finish the 5 set wahine!
And of course Mckenna G playing much better tonight, hope she can keep this level of play and confidence up all season, if she does she can be the big west POY .
crossing my fingers the match against Marquette was just an aberration for her.
And we are going to 5!
This match has eerie similarities with last year’s match against Arizona. Both last year and this year’s teams were 0-2 entering the third match, having lost to one ranked and one unranked team. Both third match opponents were from the Pac-12. Both UH teams had to come back from a deficit to get to set 5. In both matches, Granato had a monster match, 33 kills on .467 last year, 26 kills on .315 this year. Could this be a repeat win performance for Na Wahine?
If you were to take the UH box scores from the first two nights and compare to tonite, without knowing the names or that it was UH, you’d think you were comparing two completely different teams.
seriously why is sponcil not being called for being over the net when she is in the backrow…
well , ultimately the passing let the wahine down. Hope Skyler is okay 🙁
Sophia should have played last night IMO.
Nice effort for Na Wahine. Unfortunately, 0-3 and will lose their ranking tomorrow.
But if they play at a high level like this, should be 3-3 in a week.
welp. wahine gave it a good fight. but so much for rpi eh?
Utah won’t be easy. Seems like hawaii born players always come back and play very well too so expect Anae to be tough to stop especially if Skyler is out.
Don’t understand the sub choice when Williams needed to come out, trial by fire. Hope Williams is ok.
Glad Robyn is saying she’s proud.
Really impressed with Muno.
61. It was either Howling or Burns… Burns coming off injury is probably slow. Tough for Howling to see her very first action in such a pressure situation though.
59. Too early in the season to predict or worry about RPI. You don’t know if UH runs the table or loses just another game or two. You don’t know how the Big West will fare over the next 3 weeks. But you now know what this team is capable of.
So happy Robyn said she was super proud of the girls despite coming up short. So even though it was a disappointment it was a vast improvement and there will be nay-sayers saying they should have won, but everyone on the blog past couple days were hounding them to improve, so TADAH! they did improve, so like I mentioned on earlier blogs, I’m hugely hopeful & optimistic. I hope Williams didn’t injury herself too badly. Looking up ladies, looking up, good job!
despite losing, i really must ignore the loss and applaud the complete turn around from night 1 & 2. whatever Coach did last night seemed to be enough to wake her girls up and make them play. so glad with the break out performances we seen tonight from Kendra, Casey, & Granato. Savannah most definitely improved, and despite shaky passing, this team this season is very good defensively. obviously things to work on, but i thought it was gonna be a sweep so, i am glad to be proven wrong.
also i think i heard them say Kalei tweaked her shoulder colliding with Anderson in practice?? well i mean it’s strictly just my opinion, but redshirting would help, now that she played tonight, i doubt it’s an option now. Kalei is better in the front row than the back. i miss seeing her hit.
also, prayers to Williams. i hope whatever happened isn’t all too serious to keep her out of the next weekend. she has just been a joy to watch.
UCLA/Hawaii matches are always a dogfight, remember when Hawaii had kim/Lily and UCLA was not that great and it would still go to five sets. One thing for certain though is that the wahine need Mckenna G and Casey to produce like tonight night in and out from the left.
Kahakai was slightly better also, although her passing still was off at times, especially in the fifth. Also the mags/Iosia connection needs to get sorted out.
I think kalei can play up to 6 matches and still redshirt but not sure about that. wahine need her passing IMO.
63 since it was an injury sub, couldn’t Maglio have gone? I felt bad for Howling’s initiation that way.
69. No because Maglio was already in the match, just subbed out for the libero.
Highly unrealistic to expect Granato to perform at tonite’s level over the course of the season. Historically, she has been very inconsistent. If she can be a .250 hitter, I’d be thrilled. Same for Koelsch and Castillo. They had career matches tonight, but it is unrealistic to expect this to be the new normal. But if they can get to .250+, awesome.
What a great turnaround from the previous two nights. I don’t know what Robyn & her staff did with the team during that one hour practice last night, but I hope she keeps on doing it. The rest of the season is looking much more positive. Can’t wait for the next tournament.
Great match wahines, Glad coach started Kendra and Casey. They came through big time.
Yes it’s unrealistic but for the wahine to climb back into the top 20 and win the big west, they will have to.
hoping if Kendra/Casey can do it against a big block like UCLA like they can also against the big west.
Mckenna it helped a bit to go against a smaller block from Sponcil, but most of the big west setters are small also, so she can hopefully play as well as tonight during conference play , of if she’s going to make a lot of errors the kill ratio needs to be much higher like it was tonight.
Who was on the all tournament team besides Maglio?
The coaches will do great things with this team this year. Glad Granato had a nice offensive night, but what was up with that dropped free ball?? At first I thought it might have been a miscommunication with Anderson, but that was all Granato’s ball.
Poor Howling. Not the first introduction to PT any freshman would want to have. Tough situation.
Skyler Williams is probably the most complete MB we’ve had in a while. Such a huge upside. She will leave as one of the best MB’s for UH. Definitely one of if not the best freshman middles UH has had.
WF, that’s not how most athletes or humans’ performances trend. Nearly every time you see a spike, inevitably you see a fall back to the long-term average. Just review how Granato performed after her match against AZ last year. Wishful thinking to opine otherwise–this isn’t the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Granato, Castillo and Koelsch will have off nights. Btw, Williams did come back down to earth from here rarified air of the last two nights as I cautioned. It happens.
So if you believe this is all wishful thinking, then UH won’t be top 20 again this year and someone else will win the BW.
UH can get back into the top 20 and win the BW without having a monster match from Granato and career matches from two other players, night in and night out–the idea that UH needs to constantly replicate tonite’s performance is somewhat of a hyperbole, something I’ve see a lot of on this blog lately (in addition to a bad case of recency bias). To beat Utah, BYU, and Poly, maybe LBSU too, UH needs to play closer to tonite, but to beat everyone else, UH needs to play better than they did on Fri/Sat, but they won’t need career stats from multiple players to win those matches.
I don’t think Howling went on primarily due to Skyler’s injury. I was sitting behind the Wahine bench and Angelica was talking to Sophia prior to the start of set 4. I think the coaches were contemplating putting Sophia because Sky was gassed. She is a very thin and fraile player and I doubt she played three nights in a row of high level volleyball before. Kind of too bad Howling didn’t start the 5th set. Fresh legs could have helped us. Sky just didn’t have anything in her gas tank and was toughing it out like a trooper.
If the team play like this regularly, we will be fine. I do hope this is the real Wahine team.
From a strategic standpoint, I don’t think concentrating on the ranking or the RPI is very helpful. The truth is, to get to the post-season the Bows need to get the berth afforded the Big West champion, which they do by beating the Big West in regular season play. Even under better circumstances with a good RPI and a high rank, the NCAA always treats the Bows like dirt in terms of the seeding. Does anyone really think we would get an at-large berth this season? So why worry about it?
I’m just glad they came out and played like this. I was really depressed prior to tonight’s match that the Bows could be headed into a death spiral (poor performance -> bad recruiting -> bad performance, etc). But this convinces me that they can pick play up and still be contenders. After all, they did fight UCLA effectively to a standstill. I agree that the strategy of diversifying play given the hitter situation is the right thing to do, but I also think the emphasis on skills over plays in the last few weeks resulted in a team that didn’t know how to play with each other in those first couple games. Big turnaround in defense tonight with players diving for balls instead of just looking at each other, confused over who should be doing what.
ah well. this tourny was painful for na wahine. i hope they unleash their pain and tear their opponents up next tourny weekend.
61. and they got company with utah. not only adora anae but also phoebe grace! hopefully skyler recovers and they also need the other two frosh sophia and shaney ready as necessary. they will also need kirsten and maybe kalei as well as try the new ds janelle ready (especially to reinforce savannahs passing)
lol i just read this text from my friend who said his neighbor said theres a silver lining to the game with ucla
not that it matters, but since wahine played horrendous the previous two matches and shoji is no longer really around. whatever mike sealy has as any special scouting privileges is denied.
thought that was funny.
anyway, great job ladies despite the loss. particularly awesome to skyler. magnum and kendras presence finally brought command and control. down 0-3, its time to extract some vengeance come next tourny..be it 3-3?
I definitely think Kendra should start. She might not possess the power like MG , but her energy, block, and the ability to be successful than not gives her that right IMO. Casey played one of her best matches tonite. When I saw her as a Freshman during scrimmage, she had alot of pop on her arm swing. As tonites match wore on Casey became more assertive. MG is a powerful hitter but Iosia IMO has to spread the ball more. I noticed more times than. not, everytime she goes back to MG she gets roofed by a double block….Her amazing kills gets offset by being blocked alot and her inability to pass well.
Is Shaney Lipscomb stil injured? I hope she plays soon. From what I saw at a sparse time at the scrimmage last week, she looks very athletic. She might add some depth at the RS. She has that same type of “swagger” like Williams and confidence.
Once we get our ball control and passing so Irene is not running a track meet out there , we will be very good. I hope the girls realize that every match in the Big West will be more competitive than previous years. Could you imagine if Torry Van Winden still played for UCLA? Well, thr bad news is Cal Poly will be the team to beat IMO…With her addition to an already very good team, Cal Poly and UC Irvine with LBSU will give Hawaii fits. Prayerfully, our freshman MB (Williams) injury isnt too severe. She has been a delightful surprise. She plays with so much enthusiasm and vocal leadership as a rookie. Our team played well compared to the last 2 matches and hope they continue to improve and find that right chemistry to have a successful season
Attempting to gauge the height of the new players. Using Natasha as 6′ 5″, Emily as 6′ 3″ and Casey as 6′ 3″, watched them on the court during warm ups, Howling looks at least 6′ 3″, Shaney at 6′ 2″ and Skyler at 6′ 2″; can anyone help and verify? Didn’t see Shaney warming up, mostly shagged balls, so didn’t expect her to play. Howling looks like she is going to be a good player from what I observed during warm ups. Looks like Kirsten is not jumping as high as expected when compared with the others during warm ups. On the side lines the Wahine were very supportive of each other and amped up. Anyways, just additional information….
Great game and more to come. Go Wahine…
Confirmed…UH drops out of the poll for the first time in 25 years…received 30 votes, tied with upcoming opponent Baylor, for 30th place.
Poll:
https://www.avca.org/polls/di-women/8-28-2017.html
Stanford is the new #1, biggest movers up are Florida from 12 to 3, and USC from unranked (#26) to 18. Biggest drop but still in the poll is Nebraska from 5 to 12.
Someone recommended that Wahine recruit more pin hitters for next year. So far, we have a verbal from Trinity Castanenda, 6′ 1″ with an approach jump and touching 10′ 3″.
