Ran into Rodney Bradley yesterday. He is walking without crutches or a limp, and although he should be healthy for spring training, a more reasonable timetable  is the start of training camp. Here he is striking a Gap ad pose:

In case Kazz has not announced it, yesterday was the opening of training camp for the Rainbow Wahine softball team. Here are Stephanie Ricketts and Melissa Gonzalez:

And, folks, you need to watch Kelly Majam play this year:

So, I’m at Windward Mall with my son yesterday, killing time — uh, I mean, doing research on the energy-and-effect of sugar products — when I stumble into Price Busters. And they sell classic candy, such as:

  8. Kazz (blkberry_storm) January 12, 2010 7:51 am

    Aloha Coach Miano,

Could you discuss the reasoning behind why our corners are often yielding a good amount of space between themselves and opposing receivers in short yardage siutations? It appears to be zone coverage in 3rd and short situations as opposed to what some would assume should be man to man coverage.

  9. Cheyah! January 12, 2010 7:54 am

I am jonesin for some Warrior football!

    Go Warriors!

  10. letsgowarriors January 12, 2010 7:56 am

    ***Women’s volleyball tidbit***

Heard Scott Robs say that due to the retirement of Coach Andy B at UCLA, setter Lauren Cook will transfer to Nebraska and play for her dad after all and Amanda Gill supposedly is looking to transfer to UH.

  14. madeinhawaii January 12, 2010 8:19 am

    Morning everyone!

  15. LizKauai m/ January 12, 2010 8:22 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Coach Miano- can you tell us any news about the Warriors who have applied for an extra year of eligibility?

  16. Old Diver January 12, 2010 8:27 am

    Coach Miano,

Am asking this question in you position as Associate head football. Why does the quarterback have to run to the sidelines to get the plays? Can’t the plays be sent in using the receivers or running backs? This would help rotate the players and keep them fresh.

  17. tommui January 12, 2010 8:37 am

Do collegiate rules prohibit the use of transmitters in the QB’s helmets?

    Hey -top 20!!!

    Good morning Hawaii!

  18. Kazz January 12, 2010 8:40 am

Wonder how much a wireless helmet ala NFL QBs would cost???

I think Iowa uses that system.

Wonder why it’s not used more in the NCAA, even with programs that can afford it?

  19. Mike January 12, 2010 8:46 am

How many more walk-on/non-scholarship players will be starting in this upcoming season?

  20. Kazz January 12, 2010 8:50 am

    Tommui,

You thinking on the same wave-length as I am sir!!!

I could have sworn I saw Iowa’s QB with that “lightning bolt” decal on his helmet indicating that his helmet is wireless, much like the NFL’s one.

  21. Pomai January 12, 2010 8:54 am

Not sure but I don’t think you can use a wireless helmet in college.

  22. al January 12, 2010 8:54 am

    rich miano,

thus far, it seems that we are short on defensive back recruits.
i know that we are coming down to the wire and it is apparent we have only secured a verbal from just one defensive back where as we should be bringing in at least four every year.

are we still in the hunt for more defensive backs this year?

  23. al January 12, 2010 9:11 am

i heard that kelly majam was the real deal.

  24. tommui January 12, 2010 9:11 am

KAZZ: Re: #20 Great minds run in the same channels – or is that gutters?

Still have my bobbing Warrior on top of the TV set!!!

  25. al January 12, 2010 9:13 am

    rich

do you foresee any new impact guys come spring training??

    and will

the walking wounded return to the lineup this year such as david hafoka?

  26. madeinhawaii January 12, 2010 9:13 am

Coaches too accustomed to all that Motorola wireless technology in the NFL must have a bit of techno shock when trying to coach at the college level.

  27. A-House January 12, 2010 9:14 am

    Coach Miano:

Associate HC question – is the Warrior QB allowed to change a play at the line of scrimmage? Explain.

  28. Kendra January 12, 2010 9:14 am

    aloha coach miano,

i know its still very early on, but can you give us some insight on the projection of the O-Line and D-Line? talent wise and numbers wise (enough big bodies) do we have enough on both sides to be “SOLID”? starters and depth wise, do we have enough that our O-Line and D-Line will be much improved from last season? thanks

  29. Kazz January 12, 2010 9:15 am

If I were Rolo, I’d call the plays to Moniz via interpretive dance. 😆

  30. A-House January 12, 2010 9:16 am

    Coach Miano:

Associate HC question – UH does not usually substitute receivers as many other teams do – why? It would keep the starters fresh and allow the subs valuable playing time for the future.

  31. protector January 12, 2010 9:21 am

Does anyone have any Iowa connections that could clarify if Iowa did in fact use the wireless technology? That would seem to be an unfair advantage if everyone doesn’t have access to it.

  32. Kazz January 12, 2010 9:21 am

    al:
    January 12th, 2010 at 9:11 am
i heard that kelly majam was the real deal.

Brah, during the fall games against Chaminade, she hit a solo homer that almost made it over that net in the outfield. I think she was aiming for the law library. 😯 … Then again, when it says you averaged .700+ hitting in your senior year in high school, something like that shouldn’t be so shocking. 😎

Transfer Jenna Rodrigues looked pretty good in the pitching game too.

  33. Southbay January 12, 2010 9:22 am

What position is Joey Iosefa projected to compete at? Safety?

  34. madeinhawaii January 12, 2010 9:24 am

    Coach Miano,

What will it take for our team to play as disciplined and as solid a defense as Boise does, game after game, season after season?

  35. madeinhawaii January 12, 2010 9:26 am

    Coach Miano,

What more does the UH Athletic Department and Football Program need to win the battle in recruiting among Mid-major teams?

  36. Ronnie January 12, 2010 9:37 am

From the 2009 NCAA Football Rule Book:

    Prohibited Signal Devices
ARTICLE 8. Players are prohibited from being equipped with any electronic, mechanical or other signal devices for the purpose of communicating with any source (Exception: A medically prescribed hearing aid of the soundamplifier type for hearing-impaired players).

  37. Slugger January 12, 2010 9:38 am

    Aloja Kakahiaka! (Koakane-style)

Good to see Rodney Bradley up & about without crutches. Continued healing to all of our Warriors.

I wish they would sell shaved ice at the softball games!!!

  38. Kazz January 12, 2010 9:42 am

    Coach Miano,
Last season was the first season of the “Tormey and Miano” coaching combination. How would you say this turned out and have you as coaches gotten the results you expected out of the DBs last season?

  39. Kazz January 12, 2010 9:46 am

    Oops!

Guess Ronnie answered our questions! 🙂

I guess I saw wrong then. But the what the Iowa QB had on his helmet looked like that “Wired” decal the NFL QBs wear to signify their helmets are “wireless”… Well to me at least… Then again, I am colorblind… 😆

  40. Kazz January 12, 2010 9:49 am

    Slugger,

Shave ice would be a BIG seller at the softball and baseball games!!!
Thing is… At the softball stadium it tends to be very windy and cold. Well, “cold” by Hawaii standards. I swear it’s like a dang wind tunnel out there sometimes. Especially if you are sitting on the 3rd base side and facing the wind.

As ST recommended, the chili is always a good choice!

  41. BG January 12, 2010 9:50 am

    Coach

Puhleeeze comment on how Lori and the kids are doing.
When S&Quickness first started, Betty and I walked down from Chaminade to help Lori with the registration and I’d go out to pick up the Subway sandwiches. All stopped during 4 yr mobilization. Met up with Trey at Schofield.
Please know that you always have die hard supporters amongst the Tsaikos! Give a hi-5 to Rolo for us…just tell him “garlic butter shrimp”.

What happened to “Big League Chew”?

  43. (Jesse) James January 12, 2010 9:54 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos…

Hey ST, what about Chico Stix???

  44. Ronnie January 12, 2010 9:56 am

Just caught up with yesterday’s blog…

I want to offer my deepest condolences and prayers to Lorna and the Pang Ohana. May LTUHFan rest in peace.

  45. Ronnie January 12, 2010 9:57 am

Kazz, I didn’t even know it was a lightning bolt on the QB helmet. I just thought it was a green sticker… Or was it yellow?…

  46. Kazz January 12, 2010 10:01 am

Never heard of lemon head, but I have had “SUPER LEMON” back in the day!!!

Man those things kicked your okole!!!

(Sighs) A trip to the mom and pop Korean store ends with a fistful of super lemon candy, a few stink bombs and a a couple of “bomb bags” and your afternoons were set!!! Hehehehehehehehe… I miss the hanabata days… 🙁 Life was so much simpler…

  47. BG January 12, 2010 10:08 am

Such a beautiful day! Good morning Kazz, Ronnie, JJ, Slugger!!!

  48. Kazz January 12, 2010 10:14 am

    Ronnie,

Its more like a light green sticker with a lightning bolt logo on it.

    Mornin’ BG!

  49. Kazz January 12, 2010 10:21 am

    Coach Miano,

What improvements would you like to see with our strength and conditioning program? New routines? More funding? More emphasis on stretching before practices and games along with post game/practice routines?

  50. NorthShoreFan January 12, 2010 10:22 am

    Horlick’s made in Malaysia?!?!?@#!!…Das Criminal!
Used to luv em back in da small kid days. Haven’t seen them in ages. Calls for a trip to the Buster’s at Kapolei. Hope they got em there too.

Howzit BG and Betty..Hope U guys neva get blasted this past eve.

  51. Kazz January 12, 2010 10:27 am

    Coach Miano,

As an associate head coach, could you describe the BIGGEST challege the staff had all season long in 2009 outside of the lengthy six game losing streak?

  52. EH NO MAKE ! January 12, 2010 10:41 am

    Okay, so, question:

Since they do need our support; What’s the best way to turn someone into a fan of the Rainbow Wahine basketball team ?

Um, just watch the U-H men play a game.

Is it me, or is this worst but talented team you’ve ever seen ? Rainbow Warriors seemingly have players.
Rod Flemings, well at least last seasons Flemings and without the stupid looking gold shoes, that kid could play.
Dwain Williams, seems like a “head” case, but his scoring stretch during the Diamond Head Classic proved he could play.
    Jeremy Lay, not bad.
Petras Balocka, he had a 20 / 20 game earlier this season, nuff said.
Paul Campbel put together what, three consecutive 14-point performances.

    I don’t get it.

How in the hell do they lose a WAC game by 44-points, worst conference loss in U-H history ?

Hate to say it because for so many years he’s been the right guy, a nice guy, but it’s a question that really does need to be asked….Is Bob Nash the right guy to be head coach of the Rainbow Warriors ?

Right now, it doesn’t look like it.

By the way, are any of the players on this or last years team a Larry Farmer recruit ? Just wondering if he’s pulling his weight.

  53. EH NO MAKE ! January 12, 2010 10:48 am

    Mr. Miano:

First off, I’m a long time fan of Rich Miano. From back in the day at Kaiser, to all you accomplished at U-H and through your longtime run as an NFL safety. I love and more importantly respect what you stood for. Hard work, hard work and hard work. I mean from walk-on, to all WAC to NFL draft pick…whew, MUCH respect.

    However, and here’s my question:

Please explain to us how in God’s name local high school standouts like Andrew Manley, Hauoli Jamora, Seali’i Epenesa, Kona Schwencke and Beau Yap, get absolutely NO love from U-H.
Manley gets a take-it-or-leave-it or first-come-first-offer, Warriors are LAST on the Jamora trail, Epenesa has NEVER, NEVER been contacted by U-H, and Yap, well, he’s been invited to visit and might be asked to be an invited walk-on. Serious ?

Isn’t the goal to recruit the BEST the state has to offer ?
Are these not the BEST the state has to offer ?

    I would appreciate your response.

  54. protector January 12, 2010 10:50 am

    Question for Coach Miano,

What can we do in terms of coverages / strategy to nullify UNLV’s fade routes / throws to the extremely tall / athletic wide-outs. There are other teams that may also use that play against us & that was a back-breaker in terms of keeping drives alive as well as actual scores. Cost us the UNLV game last season.

  55. J-Dog January 12, 2010 10:55 am

    Coach Miano,

Do you envision yourself as a head coach in the future?

  56. protector January 12, 2010 10:57 am

    Questions for Coach Miano,

1)Who do you think are the front-runners at Corner for us?

    2) Do you think Dee Maggitt (coming from high school) can absorb the system
quickly enough to compete for PT or will he likely red-shirt to do that?

  57. al January 12, 2010 11:00 am

guys please bear in mind that any coach cannot refer to specific recruit by name until feb 3, 2010 if and when they do sign and submit nli.

  58. Ronnie January 12, 2010 11:02 am

    Hi BG!

(sorry, I was at lunch when I saw your greeting)

  59. RedZone January 12, 2010 11:13 am

My favorite candy is Babe Ruth. I think it is steroid free.

    Coach Miano

By position could you list UHs recruiting goals for each one this year? Do you think they will be met?

  60. Slugger January 12, 2010 11:20 am

    Hi, BG! and Mrs. BG!

    Howww youuuuu?

  61. Cindy Cee January 12, 2010 11:20 am

The pic of the Malties above… closest thing to the Horlicks malted tablets they used to sell at Long’s. Brought some back from Thailand. sigh……

  62. tommui January 12, 2010 11:23 am

RONNIE: re 336 – thanks for the info.

  63. Kazz (blkberry_storm) January 12, 2010 11:32 am

I love it when the url of a story gives you a little summary!!! 😆

  64. ai-eee-soos January 12, 2010 11:33 am

in case anyone is interested in usc’s search for a football coach —

JACKSONVILLE (AP) — Jack Del Rio says he will remain as coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars after a meeting with team owner Wayne Weaver.

  65. BG January 12, 2010 11:37 am

Hi everyone! Gotta run to a meeting and will miss the show…but will catch the re-run.
Enjoy this day and remember our Ohana who need our prayers. Imua

  66. A-House January 12, 2010 11:46 am

    Help, Help!

Trying, with great difficulty, to place Amanda Gill who is currently with UCLA and who “may” transfer to UH since her coach will be retiring.

    Local girl, I think?

  67. Kazz (blkberry_storm) January 12, 2010 11:49 am

    A-House,

I thought UH was *one* of Gill’s options? Would be nice if we are her only option.

  68. madeinhawaii January 12, 2010 12:00 pm

How do they split scholarships up in Volleyball?

What does a 1/2 scholarship entail?
Can they do the same in football?

  70. Poidog January 12, 2010 12:04 pm

How does our defensive 2ndary look like this year?

  71. Kazz (blkberry_storm) January 12, 2010 12:06 pm

Apparently rumors of a transfer to Stanford for Gil are now surfacing…

  72. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 12:10 pm

    Coach Miano,

Thanks for your time here on chat.

Q: Could you clarify our recruiting strategy, specifically does Hawaii EXCLUSIVELY recruit players with Polynesian elasticities and/or Hawaii ties or do we go for the best candidates regardless of their heritage or ties?

    Thanks!

  73. Kazz (blkberry_storm) January 12, 2010 12:13 pm

    ST,

Like in football, is there a NCAA limit on how many hours a program has for training camp in softball?

First game is like Feb 10th or 11th right?

  74. NowaWarrior January 12, 2010 12:45 pm

    regarding scholarship players,

in your evaluation of a player, what happens when a scholarship player does not develop and continues to be marginal in the classroom? aren’t scholarships only good for one year?

  75. 808Chef January 12, 2010 1:07 pm

Is it just me or does someone need to change their name to “eh no make A”? Cuz…das exactly wat dey jus did! nice job brah!

mahalo to cmiano on his answers to the question and for being candid as he was.

  81. Slugger January 12, 2010 1:30 pm

Aiyah! Choppy at the end of the Live WB show & now on replay. Wonder if the streaming of Hillary’s speech will interfere with this replay?

  82. letsgowarriors January 12, 2010 1:30 pm

    btw lono manners was #15

  83. A-House January 12, 2010 1:55 pm

Thanks, guys for the Amanda Gill info.

It would be tough competing against Stanford for her VB services, but you never know what a player is thinking.

  84. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 1:59 pm

    #73,

too late for this but it was supposed to be *ethnicities*…..spellcheck =(

  86. Pomai January 12, 2010 2:19 pm

    Even the replay is un-watchable

  87. A-House January 12, 2010 2:29 pm

After all this time, wonder why the “techies” cannot fix the problems encountered?

Does location, equipment used, etc matter?

  88. madeinhawaii January 12, 2010 2:59 pm

repeat just ended… I suppose that means it’s about to start up again?

  89. madeinhawaii January 12, 2010 3:07 pm

Hmm… how odd that the replay is so jerky compared to the live which was relatively smooth.

  90. Rich2176 January 12, 2010 3:09 pm

Hello Gang….back from a few days in Vegas for the CES (electronics)show. Hot new item is 3-D TV. How’d you like to see Papa L, the princess & ST in 3-D? Hmmm….

ST – nice research on energy food. BTW, Margo sent me the front page article you wrote on JJ. Very, very good. It’s interesting he really wasn’t interested in a huge salary, but rather to use the cash for upgrades.

  91. al January 12, 2010 3:10 pm

    just watched the chat replay.

i am now a fan of coach rich miano.
anyone who calls me a “young man”, well, i’m in his corner.

  92. Bulla January 12, 2010 3:13 pm

i thought coach miano was very candid and open today; he’s good on his feet and communicates well.

looking forward to a great Spring Ball session.

    GO WARRIORS 🙂 🙂 🙂

  93. al January 12, 2010 3:13 pm

i hope the tekkies fix that choppiness in the delivery of the show. its been what two years now???

  94. Bulla January 12, 2010 3:13 pm

    al,

    you young man you…………………….

  95. ai-eee-soos January 12, 2010 3:23 pm

    latest espn rumor —–

    Lane Kiffin to coach usc.

  96. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 3:24 pm

If any of you could be head coach of a Div I football team which one would it be and why?…..Hawaii is not an option haha.

My pick is Texas. Tradition, Talent, Resources and Huge faithful fan base. Not to mention they have the best logo in college football.

That and I like burnt orange for some reason.

  97. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 3:33 pm

    ai-eee-soos,

I knew USC would be dishing out some big bucks, but they must be prepared to shell out some REALLY big bucks.

The cost to bring over not only Lane but his “defense god” of a father and Ed Orgeron is going to cost them $$$$$$$.

Interesting choice for sure and Ed Orgeron back at USC is only going to mean some killer recruiting classes for sure….

I don’t know what the starting salary they are going to offer Kiffin will be but if its in the $4M range we might be looking at a $8-10M+ (including bonuses) cost for the entire coaching staff (O_O)

  98. madeinhawaii January 12, 2010 3:45 pm

USC knows it’s football program is a cash cow. In these austere times they need to make sure that money stream doesn’t skip a beat.

  99. ai-eee-soos January 12, 2010 3:47 pm

    re #98

Yup, but USC got plenty kala.

imo, USC is a pro franchise.

espn cable 23 is spinnimg, spinning this story – overkill.

  100. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 3:56 pm

    #100,

basically a pro-franchise for sure. they are the 2nd biggest tv market in the US. phew thats big bucks.

for Lane to leave Tenn after just being hired must mean the buyout is pretty heft too.

Peterson has apparently been approached by USC since Del Rio’s withdrawal. I would think getting Peterson to USC might not be AS DIFFICULT as some may think. He doesn’t like the east coast and has turned down offers in the past but not from a marque school in the west. The article I link to discusses why Peterson might leave. I know Stephen Tsai mentioned his child with the special needs but LA has some really good private schools that specialize in kids with disabilities.

Then again if he does come back to Boise fully loaded with talent up the butt he could make a run for the National Champ and at the very least another BCS game making him even more palatable for coaching jobs in the future should he choose to move on.

Hmmm if you were AD Mike Garret who would you pursue the hardest amongst the “rumored” front runners? Mariucci, Kiffin, Peterson…?

    Ho,

I don’t know if I saw this correctly but has Kona Schwenke decommitted from BYU. I just took a glance at Doris’s website and she does show Kona as a commit anymore. Does anybody have any info on this.

    Al you got anything.

Man I wish we had a couple more scholarships left on top of the five or so that was already mentioned. Looks like there are a couple of high profiled kids opening up there recruitment again.

Oh well I definitely trust the coaches through all the madness to make the right desicions and to figure out a strategy to there recruiting for years to come.

Does anyone know what the buyout is going to be for Kiffin and even Chow?……My understanding is that Chow was on a contract with UCLA for 3 years worth around $1.5M + Incentives.

  115. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 4:57 pm

    Pomai,

I hear ya! But I gotta say if Hawaii had the money I would welcome with open arms and leis at the airport to get that staff.

It’s chalk filled with big name big time coaches.

I really wonder how sanctions are going to affect USC if/when they come.

It’ll also be interesting to see Chow revamp the offense and get back to the passing game a little more.

  116. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 5:05 pm

Looked up the buyout on Kiffin. *click name for article*

Apparently USC will be paying $800,000 for his buyout. (don’t know how reliable these numbers are)

Is it just me or is that not a lot of money?

Who would have thought that it would be cheaper to buy out an SEC coach than a WAC coach. Truth is stranger than fiction.

More proof that life is fair for only a few…

How can USC lose PC (bad situation) then turn it around and get Monti AND Chow AND Orgeron….

I mean honestly at this rate the school might as well embrace any NCAA sanctions because it might come with a billion dollar endowment from some guy for the football program feeling sorry for them….

    so unfair.

  122. Kazz (blkberry_storm) January 12, 2010 5:21 pm

On an upside the first game we play and USC will play will be Hawaii.

The nation will have their eyes on this game to see what the season might be like for USC.

The Warriors might have their best chance ever at beating USC with all of the change ups.

  131. Kazz January 12, 2010 5:55 pm

***RE: Amanda Gil and UH speculation***

After speaking at length with 808ike the possibility of Amanda Gil taking up residence at UH Manoa and joining the legacy of Rainbow Wahine Volleyball has some obstacles.

First, Gil will be a junior in 2010. Supposedly her choice of a transfer, as well as her parents is Stanford. However, there appears to be some sort of PAC 10 transfer rule in which the transferee will lose a year of eligibility and then 8 of the 10 schools will need to approve of this transfer.

UH has ZERO scholarships to offer Gil, UNLESS a current middle blocker on schollie will have theirs taken away. Brittany Hewitt??? Alexis Forsythe??? Kristina Tuaniga??? Incoming freshman Emily Hartong is obviously on scholarship, but the possibility of offering her a grayshirt deal for the 2010 season is another route. HOWEVER… UH only has two scholarships to offer in the 2011 season. IF this reneging Hartong to a grayshirt deal is done without exploring taking one away from a current Wahine, then it leaves 2011 with ONE scholarship.

Apparently Gil got her release from UCLA. Most likely she will remain at UCLA for the spring semester otherwise a transfer now would result in her sitting out a year.

    STAY TUNED!!!!!!

At 6’6″ and being one of the best middles in the game today, Gil would be a great steal.

  132. whitey January 12, 2010 5:55 pm

interesting to note that BSU may start the preseason as the #2 team in the nation.

  133. whitey January 12, 2010 6:01 pm

wahine vb finishes just shy of the top and now they have “problem” with possible transfer. hoooooo, am sure coach shoji just loves this kind of headache!!!!

  134. whitey January 12, 2010 6:02 pm

but when you think about the possiblilities of wvb next season if she was able to transfer to uh, you are looking at the “Queen Of The Hill” title.

  135. Kazz January 12, 2010 6:19 pm

Apparently there is a ***RUMOR*** that Amanda Gil will be visiting UH during the next home Warrior volleyball match.

She did get her release from UCLA.

    Again, this is NOT confirmed.

What is confirmed is I will be making a LARGE sign for her just in case… 😉

  136. Kazz January 12, 2010 6:24 pm

After a season-ending injury last year, good to see that Kelly Majam doesn’t need the assistance of a brace over her knee. Well, at least in that photo.

  137. Kazz January 12, 2010 6:30 pm

    ST,

Got any speculation as to the probable starters for the Wahine softball team?

    CF – Majam
    RF – Pu’u-Warren
    LF – Aguirre
    C – Grimes
    1st – Tauali’i
    2nd – Pagaduan
    3rd – Gonzalez
    SS – Yoshikawa
    P – Ricketts/Rodriguez/Parnaby

  138. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 6:30 pm

With Monti Kiffin’s “Cover 2” defensive scheme it will be interesting to see USC being able to defend more spread offenses.

I wonder where the puts the RnS?

My pick is Texas. Tradition, Talent, Resources and Huge faithful fan base. Not to mention they have the best logo in college football.

That and I like burnt orange for some reason.

Notre Dame. But, I am a minority and we’ve seen what happens… (nevermind, I better be quiet on this one…)

  143. A-House January 12, 2010 7:11 pm

If Amanda Gill agrees to visit UH at the next MVB game, then Coach Shoji should be working on a plan on how the few scholarships available will be spread out to accommodate her, current players, and 2010 recruits; what a nice dilemma to be faced with!!.

I would think that he is already working on it just in case; after all, it will only be a plan, but a well developed plan.

This is something that Coach Mack needs to do, now, just in case more top tier local talent decides to stay home and he does not have enough scholarships available. Taking away a scholarship is not easy, it will hurt, but should be included in any recruiting plan drawn up by the coaching staff based upon the contribution(s) of each player – team, school, community, and off-season work regimen. And, each recruit/player must be told up front that the possibility of losing the scholarship is based on their contribution to the team.

Will this scare away some recruits? Absolutely yes, but those who commit are those the coaching staff will not have to worry about for academics and team.

  144. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 7:14 pm

    A-House,

I am sure UH takes away scholarships and gives them to other kids who are deemed “more deserving” of them.

It’s gotta be a difficult balance to think about what’s best for your program and being sensitive to what really are high school kids.

However when push comes to shove the coaches have only one thing to remember when it comes to recruiting…..whether you break a few hearts or not it doesn’t matter, you do what you gotta do to get the best talent. Quite frankly if that means you renig on a scholarship you promised, so be it.

  148. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 7:22 pm

    #147,

That’s right, how could I have forgotten about those 2. Hmmm maybe something subconscious to read in that one. haha jk.

  151. A-House January 12, 2010 7:40 pm

OK, ST, it’s getting close to bedtime and gotta hit the hay so no forget to post some good UH news after midnight tonight and we can feel good – can be football, baseball, volleyball, softball, any kine even if you not the “beat” writa.

OH, wait now, I gotsa watch the Great Queen Seondock which starts at 9:25pm – great series about a true, historical Korean Queen back in the late 600 AD who set the basis for the unification of the 3 kingdoms – Silla, Bekjae, and Goruygo – now called Korea. Episode 16 of 62.

  152. LizKauai [iMac] m/ January 12, 2010 7:45 pm

    Hiya!

Kazz, how’s my girl Jori Jasper doing?

Again- the Wahine Clinic was a real confidence-builder for me. Confidence in our coaching staff. Coach Miano’s interview today is typical of the kind of awareness and dedication that the whole staff exudes.

It’s up to our players to buy in and guy in. We have really great coaches!

  153. A-House January 12, 2010 7:57 pm

    IWWTHME:

Probably yes, but that should only put the “onus” on the coaching staff to win games, many games, to keep the talent home.

Not all will stay, but get commitments from more so-called “top tier” student athletes – not only from Hawaii but throughout the west region and a few east of the Mississippi!!

This means being more creative on offensive play calling – run the ball more in different sets. Last time I saw UH do the “student body right and left” was back in the late 60s early 70s. Use the RB better instead of just blocking! Swing passes to the sidelines to avoid the “bunch up in the middle”. Not saying give up on the “shovel pass”, but———. Which means that the OL has to get better to keep the defense out of the backfield.

With the RnS, when can a OL become pass eligible? Does this require all the receivers to be on the same side of the field with at least 2 up on the line of scrimmage next to the lineman? How many different plays can be run from this formation? Some will say this is crazy, but if no you try, how you know its going to or not going to work.

  154. Kazz January 12, 2010 7:59 pm

    LizK,

Jori Jasper is listed at 1st base last I saw. She played a few against Chaminade in the fall. I cannot recall seeing her at bat though.

1st base is pretty much locked in with Amanda Tauali’i. Behind her you’ve got sophomores Sarah Robinson and Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu. So only time will tell where da Kauai native will fit in. Only a freshman, her playing days in Manoa have only yet to begin.

wvb I think Hartong and Waber are keepers, grayshirt Goodman or uiato. Moenoa will be available in 2011, volley talk fans think she has a better up side than Uiato at this stage (HS to D1) Uiato is 5’8 and I think Moenoa is 5’10 (Mafua’s ht). Hartong is very athletic, good jump server, can hit on the slide and digs well in the back row for a 6’1 mb. She is more agile than Alexis but shorter.

    Ralph,

Think Forsythe will be able to improve her footwork in the off season?

  160. Kazz January 12, 2010 8:21 pm

When I was out sick the past two weeks, my brother got me seasons 1-4 of “The Office”.

Now watching TBS’ mini marathon of the sitcom, I am left staring at episodes I’ve already seen over and over again.

    Still… GREAT show!!!! 😆

    I miss working in a true “office” setting… 🙁

  161. Kazz January 12, 2010 8:24 pm

If Waber can start right away, it will be interesting to see the dynamic between Waber and Mafua… or Waber and Uiato???

  162. Ralph January 12, 2010 8:30 pm

Mafua will continue as setter next season, Uiato will sit. Waber can play OH or MB so she can compete for Aneli’s position or Ferrell’s. Waber and Hartong move along the net a lot quicker than Corinne and Alexis, interesting competion next year. Then there is tuaniga at 6’2, but I read she is a up side project like Ferrell. So this year RS really helped her learn the system and get a lot of reps against the starters.

  163. Kazz January 12, 2010 8:34 pm

Hmmm… Tuaniga as a project… Interesting how that’s gonna work considering Hartong and Forsythe are gonna compete for the middle also. Well, Shoji said Hartong could compete right away from what I remember.

Considering how well Hewitt played last season, I wanna say she’s a “lock”, but nothing is for sure nowadays I guess…

Wow, USC will have an *amazing* group of key assistant coaches. Monte Kiffin as DC, Chow as OC, and Orgeron leading the recruiting…wow.

It will be interesting to see if Orgeron succeeds in getting some of Tennessee’s commits to go to USC. Unlike most coaching staff changes, it sounds like USC’s new coaching staff is open about going after the best commits to their old school.

This will insure that the season opener for USC will have *huge* media attention and national fan interest. That gives the Warriors a big spotlight to show what they can do. The changes at USC might take a little while to get fully into sync, so that might be to UH’s benefit…or their players could want to impress their new coaches and could be incredibly up for the game.

The two biggest stories about coaching changes this offseason, at least to me, were at USC and Texas Tech…and those teams open against UH and SMU.

Chinese manufacturers have been substituting cadmium for lead in children’s jewelry, but cadmium is WORSE than lead for human health! Chinese manufacturers like cadmium because it is cheap and easy to work with, and in some cases are using extraordinarily high levels of cadmium in their products, but cadmium causes cancer and hinders in the brain development of kids! If the jewelry with cadmium was industrial garbage, it would be considered hazardous waste…but since there are no cadmium restrictions on jewelry, it can be sold legally in the US.

Tennessee is going to have to hire a coach quickly if they do not want to lose their recruiting class. This is much later than JJ left UH and the new coach will have a very short time to recruit. However, if they take a college coach, that coach will be leaving his school really, really late in the recruiting season.

Hopefully Tennessee will get a coach from the NFL. I’ve seen lots of interesting names rumored, including Petersen, and I’m sure things are pretty chaotic for Tennessee right now. They cannot interview a college coach if they do not expect to offer that coach the job…since the coach would be killing his recruiting class if he interviews for a job this late in the process and ends up staying at his school.

  184. whitey January 12, 2010 10:22 pm

Garret, #179 is funny, but apparently the wisdom in mass prevails, so i wonder if the cat has mass healthcare insurance or is entitled to it.

  185. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 10:49 pm

I thought Peterson would be a real front runner for a bunch of coaching jobs and especially at USC.

I was pretty wrong and another candidate prevailed.

Now with this talk about Tenn…I would NEVER expect Peterson to coach U. Tenn…NEVER….with that being said prepare for a coaching change at BSU. LOL

  186. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 10:53 pm

To add to #187 it must REALLY SUCK to be a BSU fan at times. Can you imagine your coach is literally the “answer” that gets you to where you are now and every time a coach gets fired at a BCS school you wonder “is he going or is he staying…can he really pass this offer up?”……

the pressure of being a BSU fan must be pretty rough.

  187. whitey January 12, 2010 10:57 pm

Tenn has one of the best recruiting class lined up this year, but with all this turmoil, what will happen??? now the musical chairs start up for recruits also.

  188. whitey January 12, 2010 10:58 pm

wonder why joe pa’s name neva comes up whenever there is a hc position vacancy???

  189. whitey January 12, 2010 10:59 pm

oh, yeah, coach bowden is also available.

  191. whitey January 12, 2010 11:01 pm

we talk about our recruiting class, but imagine what tenn has to do between now and feb 4th. they could lose most of their recruits or somehow get most to sign on without a hc.

  192. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 11:02 pm

    #190,

Because that’s like trying to get grandpa to move out of a house he has lived in his entire life…..that and everyone knows JoePa has said numerous times publicly that he will retire at Penn. That and maybe the fact that he is ummm ‘not young’ makes him not so much of a candidate for jobs like USC hahaha.

JoePa sunbathing on the beaches of So Cal?…EWWWWWWW!

Plus being at Penn with the tradition, history, resources, money makes it difficult to move up.

In Peterson’s case I can name at least 10 schools that would be considered a “move-up” in his coaching career.

  193. whitey January 12, 2010 11:03 pm

lizk, no go sleep without reaching the top of the hill.

  194. whitey January 12, 2010 11:05 pm

iwonder, but wouldn’t it be something if tenn said that they are looking at joepa or bowden??? one for us old farts!!!!

  195. whitey January 12, 2010 11:07 pm

recruiting is coming down to the wire and there are quite a bit of uncommited players out there. hopefully the warriors will be able to secure some and have them firm on feb 4th.

RIOTS IN TENNESSEE over Lane Kiffin’s resignation

To ensure I am w/in blog guideline I will not post link due to its graphic nature.

Search “Tennessee football riots” to find article in Huffington Post.

    *Warning Graphic Content*

So apparently UoT campus is up in arms about the departure of Lane Kiffin. The student body has committed acts of vandalism and riots have been photographed and videotaped.

    joe pa’s name never surfaces.
    he is penn state football.
no one would ever think that he would leave anyway.

  202. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 11:13 pm

    whitey,

I’ll give you Bowden…but not Joe Pa. Joe Pa and Penn is like Bread and Butter. hahaha.

  203. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 12, 2010 11:45 pm

Reading Pat Forde’s article on the Tenn hire.

Puts things into persepctive and makes me believe I can be a head football coach too.

Never a head coach in college let alone the NFL -> get hired as HC of the Raiders

Failing and fired from the Raiders get hired on a lucrative contract with UT…

After a lackluster ONE season where you get killed by VT, you get offered one of the most prestigious coaching jobs in college ball.

Nothing but WOW…I want to either 1) fail at what I do or 2) be mediocre at it and get offered bigger better jobs with more money…..again I say “life is so fair” hahaha 🙂

    GO for it Norm – – – –

“Despite reports across the Internet, a deal to bring Norm Chow, currently UCLA’s offensive coordinator, back to USC as offensive coordinator is not done yet, according to the Los Angeles Times. A source close to Chow says while the two sides are talking, no deal has been reached.

Chow said recently that it “would take NFL-type money” to get him back to USC.”

    WAC football ( somewhat ) – – – –

New Mexico State coach DeWayne Walker told the Las Cruces Sun-News that he has not been contacted by Pete Carroll or the Seattle Seahawks to join the staff as the defensive coordinator despite several published reports saying he was leaving.

“I have not been offered the job,” he told the Sun-News. “Therefore, I have not accepted the job. Everything everybody is writing is false.”

Sorry but I wouldn’t want anything to do with that type of coach, or PC either, we have enough problems with the programs at UH no need to ask for more.

To all WARRIORS now is the time for all of you to go “BALLS TO THE WALL” an show USC what it means to leave it on the field.

  219. Kazz (blkberry_storm) January 13, 2010 7:27 am

    Pomai,

I can agree that Lane Kiffin by himself wouldn’t appeal to me at all.

But anybody in college football would love to have PC, but more so Kiffins and even PC’s staff…its a package.

Monti Kiffin, Ken Norton Jr., Ed Orgeron, Steve Sarkesian, John Morton. and maybe even Norm Chow.

This kind of stacked coaching staff with real experience at both the college and nfl levels would be insanely awesome for Hawaii if we had them.

But alas…Fight On?…nah for me its Dream On. hahaha.

  222. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 13, 2010 8:28 am

Maybe someone mentioned this already but Boise State Football is selling stocks (similar to Green Bay)….

    Very interesting fundraising strategy.

    Could it work here?

  223. Ewa Boy 808 January 17, 2010 5:30 am

Rich Miano I think that guy would make a good head coach even though I heard he was a snake.haha I think UH should be focusing on getting their players good supplements and nutrients like other big time schools , instead of buying dam flat screens for the coaches offices. I also think the warriors should fire that cornball “MAC”.
