Prep RB/S joins 2018 recruiting class

The Warriors continue to invest in the future with a 2018 commitment from running back/safety Khoury Bethley of Don Antonio Lugo High in Chino, Calif. Bethley, who is 5 feet 11 and 195 pounds, said he

will sign on Dec. 20, the first day of the NCAA’s new signing period for football recruits.

Here are the details:

> Running man: In 13 games last season, Bethley rushed for 2,089 yards, averaging 8.7 per carry and 160.7 per game. He scored 27 touchdowns — 25 on rushes, two on receptions. Brandon Huffman, who is national recruiting director for Scout.com, rated Bethley as a 3-star prospect and top-12 back in the West.

> Safety first: Bethley is widely viewed as a defensive back. He amassed 90 tackles in 2016. Bethley said he is open to competing as a hybrid safety for the Warriors. If so, he could mirror the path of starting safety Daniel Lewis, who was terrific running back in high school.

> Secondary is primary: There has been a strong emphasis on stocking the secondary. The 2017 recruiting class features seven defensive backs, three of whom — Jay Dominique, Eugene Ford and Manu Hudson-Rasmusssen — enrolled at UH in January. They added Kayson Smith-Bejgrowicz in the spring. Justice Augafa signed a scholarship agreement two days ago and will join the Warriors in two weeks. It also should be noted Jacob Yoro was hired as safeties coach this year.

> Other job: Bethley also is the starting center fielder for the Conquistadors batting .356 this past season. He said he plans to focus solely on football at UH.

> The tally: If you’re scoring at home, here’s the 2018 count:
• Jarrell Anderson, tight end, Rainier Beach High
• Khoury Bethley, running back/safety, Don Antonio Lugo High
• Kamuela Borden, lineman, Iolani School (currently on church mission)
• Chevan Cordeiro, quarterback, Saint Louis School
• Kai Kaneshiro, cornerback/safety, Saint Louis School
• Jonah Panoke, receiver, Saint Louis School

By the way, Bethley said that although he attends school 2 miles away, he has never met the Ball family.

Nice looking prospect. Can always use more speed on the field. Speed kills.

    @hilorain
I believe two of the other Rainier Beach players de-committed shortly after their announcement. Probably had second thoughts on their decision.

ST, any update on Emil Graves? He wasn’t pictured with the incoming freshmen, which isn’t surprising since he’s a JC transfer, but I haven’t seen any report on when he’s expected to arrive at Manoa.

With Elijah Tupai off the team and Kingjames Taylor sidelined for the season, we’re going to need Graves to help man the o-line.

Aloha all you blog dogs ~ I wanted to let everybody know that the Cabanas at Rainbow Bay Marina have been reserved for this season’s home game T-Gates. We do have a minor change…For September – Cabana A; For October – Cabana B; For November – Cabana A. {{Hangs head with shame}} I was travelling and forgot to get Cabana A for October and somebody snuck in a reserved Cabana A behind my back. Good thing B is just steps from A. Anyway, everything else remains the same and I’ll put out more details closer to the tgate. Anybody have any idea for tgate themes this year????

First time ever uh has had that many commits from underclassman prospects. Credit rolo and his staff for changing the culture on and off the field.

Also the fact he’s bringing in quality 3 star underrated recruits. Not that ratings really mean anything until they step on the field. But still nice to see coming from a mid major team and non power conference. We don’t have a million dollar recruiting budget but just goes to show that treating young recruits like actual human beings and not robots works wonders.

Mr. Tsai: Is Cade Smith a Rainbow?

Every Twins draft pick is signed above him except for the Round 11 guy.

  13. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2017 6:28 pm

I think Cade Smith’s decision will be made close to the deadline
