Warriors sign JC safety

Los Angeles Harbor College safety Justice Augafa, who was born and raised in Alaska, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he signed a scholarship agreement with the Warriors last night. An official announcement is expected today.

Augafa, who is 5 feet 11 and 205 pounds, will join the Warriors for training camp, which opens July 26. He will have three years to play two UH seasons.

Here what it means:

> Versatility: Augafa was a multi-talented senior at South Anchorage High in 2014. He was named the state’s offensive player of the year after rushing for 1,360 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also was named to the all-state first team as a safety. He scored five TDs on returns — three on punts, two on kickoffs. He was a safety at LA Harbor.

> Aloha spirit: TCU made a push last year, and San Diego State and Washington State made offers this year. But Augafa said he chose UH during a recruiting visit last week. “It was a better environment for me,” Augafa said. “The coaches are excellent. The players have a good chemistry. I thought it was a good place to pick.”

> Waiting game: In what has become a UH tradition, the Warriors try to hold a couple spots in reserve for players who are available after the February signing day. Linebacker Adam Leonard was not one of the signees announced on Feb. 2, 2005. Later that year, the Warriors added Colt Brennan and Dan Kelly. More recently, Rigo Sanchez, Scott Harding, Sean Schroeder and Dru Brown were added just before the start of training camp.
