Warriors’ time-honored tradition
The Warriors scholarship offer to 11-year-old Titan Lacaden is unique — it drew coverage from USA Today to the New York Daily News — but not unprecedented.
A brief recap of the Warriors’ youth movement:
> In 2000, Patrick Lavar Harley joined the Warriors as a linebacker. He was 16. Harley could read and write at age 3. He began kindergarten at 4. He was promoted from third grade straight to fifth grade. That freshman year at UH he could not vote, donate blood or register for the draft — the military draft. He redshirted that year but made his first start in 2001, as a 17-year-old outside linebacker.
> In July 2008, six months after being hired as UH head coach, Greg McMackin offered a scholarship to 13-year-old offensive lineman Reeve Koehler, who was entering the eighth grade at Kailua Intermediate. By the time he graduated from Saint Louis School in 2013, McMackin had left UH. Koehler played for Arkansas after turning down offers from Tennessee, Oregon, California and Kansas.
> In June 2009, McMackin was at it again, this time offering a scholarship to 15-year-old Kamalei Correia, a Saint Louis freshman whose mother worked at the UH athletic department. It was a family tradition. La‘anui Correa played for the Warriors and, at the time, Haku Correa, was a UH freshman. Correia went to Boise State. The Baltimore Ravens selected Correa in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft.
> Last year, Nick Rolovich offered a UH scholarship to 14-year-old Noah Sewell, an eighth grader at Desert Hills Middle School in Saint George, Utah. Rolovich was Nevada’s offensive coordinator when he recruited Sewell’s older brother to the Wolf Pack.
> Rolovich followed the Sewell offer with an offer to Faatuiolemotu “Tui” Tuilele, who had just completed his freshman year at Saint Louis School. At the time of the offer Tuilele was standout in junior varsity who had yet to play in a varsity game.

UH at UCLA football game on Sept 9.
I just purchased the best available 215 tickets ($65 each); on the Hawaii side line in Sections 7 & 8; 10 to 19 rows up around the 5 yard line. these sections are closer to the field because this stadium curves in & this is where visiting fans sit. Sect 7 & 8 is now the visitor’s side as they switched sides this coming season. This stadium has 77+ rows so this are great seats closer to the field. let me know if you want these tix as I had to pay for these upfront. Text me at 415-324-0585.

I don’t see what the point in offering a scholarship to someone that young. Something like that should really be looked at by the NCAA. Schools should not even be allowed contact until the kid is at least in high school.
On a side note, Dennis Rodman is in North Korea (again) today.

I suppose that makes it a little better, but still a fifth grader? I’m sure the parents are thrilled consider the $$ for college planning that they were probably already sweating about. Then again that could put a lot of pressure for the kid to continue to play football (regardless if he eventually wants to still or not). Not to mention later will the coach even still be there (we hope so) and will the scholarship even still be honored as he still gets closer to senior year. There’s some positives for this, but I think the negatives surely outweigh. I probably just over analyzed the hell out of this but hey I’m an accountant it’s what I do.
Did Reeve Koehler make it to the NFL?
#5 I agree. How much will the kids head inflate to? He’ll probably not work as hard to become a good football player if something like that is handed out to him at such a young age.

Not sure what offering kids so early would mean or do but anything can happen during the course of a football season. It’s one thing to let the kid know UH wants him but….
Anyhoo, go after our keiki o ka aina with a vengeance. Let them know we got our one good eye on them all the way.
Follow up every season. Use the “coconut wireless” and show them the luv! Knowing we did all we could, no shame if they go away.

Hilarious to offer a fifth grader! Nonsense, I expect more from Rolovich! It’s time for NCAA to put a stop to these types of offers and maybe allow it begin in prospects first year of high school.
Don’t know why the hate in offering a scholarship to someone so young. What bigger compliment to a recruit that you really want them.
You can be a recruit in the womb or 90 years old. It’s not binding till you sign on national letter of intent day.

I love it! It’s showing Hawaii that Coach Rolo is serious about our local boys. It’s also bringing publicity to Hawaii. I’m gonna enjoy the ride and leave the coaching and recruiting to Coach Rolo and his staff!
