Long Beach State 3, Hawaii 1
Not seeing any scenario that UH won’t get at least an at-large and that Beach and BYU also get in.

Crowd pretty sad. 20 minutes before and I’d say the 4200 seat Pyramid is less than a quarter full. but late arriving crowd.
Both teams looking very looses. Think they both know they are in and just playing for seed. don’t know how much that affects things mentally.
Just hope for a good showing even if they lose to leave zero doubt to the committee.
That UCI win over Ohio State scares me a little.
Crowd slowly building. could be close to 3500 when it’s all done.
1 I guess but if they go by RPI UCI at 5, UH at 4. and UH has the head to head over the ‘Eaters.
Warriors started singing Hawaii Pono’i as they were finishing shaking hands with the Beach.
Usual starting lineup. Rosenmeier, Mol, van Tilburg, Fey, Gasman, Tuileta, Franciskovic.
Let’s hope that the R1 makes sure the only deep dish pizza in the arena is coming from the pizza joint down the road, not from Tuininga.
and let’s establish this right now. Tuaniga’s sets are ugly, when watching practice yesterday I don’t think one single one came out clean.
6. Yep, Good decision maker, but those sets are double deep dish lol
I love those black uniforms, hope they wear those in the national championship game:)
I just love how the Warrior middles are peaking right now.
5. OK as said. Established. no need to belabor it. ‘-)
Mol with off speed wounded duck of a serve. Ace makes it 10-6. TO Beach.
Cindy, do you think if LBSU goes to the finals, NCAA refs would call his sets as they should be called, lifts?
Knipe calls for his first diaper change! TO LB$U…
CHEEEE our block is doing SOOOO WELL!! And Jennings, such a threat, love it that they have to respect him as an attacker even though he’s a setter! Lets go warriors!!!
DeFalco is choking…and complaining! Fourty Whiners!
UH up 15-8 at the TTO. Warriors definitely dialed in on the block. finally stopped Ensing on that last play
Tuaniga to no one. UH up 21-14. TO Beach.
Let’s Go Warriors!!
13. don’t think he is. couple of poor sets but it is surprising that he only has one kill.
The difference with this Hawaii team is the middles. None of the middles were effective offensively the first half of the season. Now, there are 4 to 5 options in all rotations. Go Bows!
Only getting the live stats. By my count, Tuaniga’s been called 3 (4?) times for a bad set in Game 1. For once, the refs are calling it.
17. DeFalco is hitting -.250…that’s bad for an All MPSF player…and the poor sets are being called. Defalco expecting the deep dish and its called, throwing off his rhythm.
Warriors win 25-17.
20. That could be in terms of timing but DeFalco did not look all the good in practice yesterday.
49ers top hitting team in the country. Hitting .038
19. Live stats aren’t correct. for one, they had Tuaniga for a lift but it was DeFalco into the net.
Now the officials can’t count!?
23. Agree. that should have been just 3.
DeFalco has warmed up. nice double play by the Beach. 49ers up 15-11 at the TTO.
Put Rado in!!
Geez this is the last thing the warriors need, damn.
not good. Mol is in a lot of pain. don’t know if if someone went under. might be ankle. Long Beach up 19-15. Solbrig is in
hope it is not serious and Hendrik can play in two weeks at least,He was playing lights out.
Don, enough of the language
just way too many hitting errors by the pins this set.
Did look like DeFalco went under from all accounts. Beach up 22-18. TO UH
Parapunove in for van Tilburg. Weird replay. looked like DeFalco was into the net.
Never cared for fans standing for set point. it should be for aloha ball only IMHO
Beach 25-20. Just a 3 minute break
Mol with his right ankle iced. on crutches.
3rd match in a row against Long Beach that Stijn and Fey struggle, need those two to find away to produce against Long Beach.
36. sounds bad hope it’s not the end of his UH playing career.
Parapunov in for van Tilburg to start set 3
Hawaii very much out of sync in this one.
How the heck is Hildebrand an assistant with LB men’s team and Nebraska women’s team? I know he just started with Nebraska, but still. How is he allowed to be at both?
Oh, apparently I can’t say BYU ______. I got that comment deleted from the previous post. But they do.
Beach up 5-0 TO UH
41. my guess is he probably worked out a deal when taking the Nebraska assistant job. Not like the Huskers are in season.
Why wouldn’t he ‘be allowed?’
and yes, exactly why
Without Mol, UH is in deep, deep trouble. They don’t even look like the same team.
Hawaii better find some momentum or this will be a quick game 3 and 4.
44. Solbrig isn’t Mol but he has played well when in.
we’ll see what happens.
43. It still should not be allowed regardless of in season or not. The NCAA should have rules against this. This could open a can of worms if possible future precedent if another coach wants to coach the women from one college but then switch to another college’s men’s team. Same college, different story. Different colleges, that’s a problem.
don’t think Parapunov is the answer either.
agree they don’t look like the same team at all. their serve receive is a mess
UH just falling apart.
Tuaniga with an ace. it’s 11-4. TO UH
47 i don’t understand what your problem is.
you don’t know how the contract was set up.
he’s an assistant with a women’s team NOT IN SEASON
So what if he’s doing it this season. Hired fairly late. in the middle of selling his house here.
He is moving to Nebraska next week.
Van Tilburg back in at 12-4
Embarrassing breakdowns. UH needs to dig deep and show some resilience. Yes it’s tough losing a senior starter and leader but he’s only one player. Solbrig has to step up.
I understand what “not in season” means. It don’t matter. It’s two different colleges. PERIOD!
Beach up 15-7. at the TTO
55. So what?
Again. hired late. Had to sell house here. He and wife moving next week to Nebraska.
Think Witt should have been called for a pursuit violation. Ref letting it go. it’s 20-9.
Matautia in for Rosenmeier It’s 18-7
Complete meltdown.
Beach wins 25-13.
Meltdown after a key player does down, haven’t we seen this horror story before? Ugh UH volleyball just has terrible luck.
So sorry to hear that Henrik Mol was injured and it’s not sure if he can play two next time. If not, maybe it might have been better if Hawaii lost to BYU and Mol would be still healthy. Let’s hope that that Hawaii will gain an at large berth and Mol will recover in time to play next time.
Ummm..where was THAT call when Mol went down?? Homer refs??
61. no it wouldn’t have been better if UH lost to BYU.
62. no they aren’t home refs.
it was a bang-bang play and not surprised that refs were screened.
and yes I am getting tired of nearly been hit by the play. think that was 4 times
Warriors up 15-13 at the TTO
Parapunov is such a great player but what a terrible game so far for him. I hope he turns things around.
Thank you Cindy for the updates.
63. Are you sure? That serve was SOOOO in!!!
I’m out…This game should be challenged by Charlie…
wow, blown called by all concerned. on van Tilburg’s serve. it was in by a foot. but no replay. huge swing with Tuaniga following it up with an ace. it’s 22-20. TO UH
ace would have given Warriors 21-20 lead.
BLOWN Service Ace call by Line Refs. #Hometowncalls That would have put UH up 21-20. Instead, Hawaii gets aced and now trail 20-22.
Wow it sounds like a lot of blown calls by the refs, I don’t understand why if its the league tournament, why isn’t replay video required of the playoff sights?
Listening to the call on the radio — thoughts on the line judges’ call on the serve?
Beach wins 25-23.
Thanks 69. Yikes!!!
Whatever they can celebrate now, the Warriors will do so In two weeks!
That bad call cost Hawaii the fourth set and the match! I bet those lineman were hired out of Long Beach and they deliberately ruled in favor of their home team. Shouldn’t UH protest the unfair call? Let’s hope that the NCAA tournament will have the challenge system.
Well I’m sure if we could have lost the 2nd set after that injury by 2 like we did the 4th, we could have taken 3rd & 4th set cuz we finally figured it all out but a little too late. Proud of them for re-grouping and getting that momentum., Hopefully we get a bid tomorrow and play in two weeks and Mol can play as well. I wonder why VTB struggled every single time we played LB. Good regular season, but lets hope we get the bid and concentrate on tournament. I think it should be mandatory that the playoff sites have replays… That one ‘out serve’ that was in could have made a huge difference.
Sending positive thoughts that Mol has a miraculous recovery.
76. just stop.
all-tournament
BYU Leo Durkin,
UC Irvine Scott Stadick
Hawaii Stijn van Tilburg
Hawaii Kupono Fey
LBS Josh Tuaniga
LBS Kyle Ensing
LBS MVP TJ DeFalco
Leo Durkin?? huh
#5 Penn State at#4 Hawaii
#6 Barton at #3 BYU
(Sports Animals were assuming that regardless of UH loss in MPSF championship they would remain above BYU. This why I argued it would be too risky to root for UCI vs. LBSU, cause if Hawaii lost, they would fall below LBSU and BYU, with UCI of course getting the automatic bid). Too me, the only question tomorrow is #3 or #4 UH or BYU, I’m predicting the Cougars. Would be surprised if LBSU is #1, given they lost 3-1 to OSU in the regular season.
I am going to actually look at this loss as a good thing in the sense that we MAY be able to watch another match at home. Hopefully.
81. think you are right with that, Bet Hawaii and BYU will host next saturday. Both should advance But Hawaii needs Mol to have chance against OSU, or Solbrig needs to step it up.
Hawaii just beat BYU on a neutral court, you’d think that alone would be reason enough to get them the 3rd seed.
look at 2015 Pepperdine beat UH on a neutral court in the playoffs and UH still got in because they had won 2 matches against Pepperdine in the SSC earlier in the season. BYU’s 2 sweeps in Provo will get them seeded ahead of UH.
82. It’s a good thing because I seriously doubt UH will lose to Long Beach 4 times this season, not happening.
I’m predicting it now Hawaii/ long Beach rematch in two weeks. Beach goes down.
#85 yup, and BYU actually tied for the MPSF regular season championship with Long Beach, and split matches with them (winning in 5 and getting swept- lost tiebreaker). So among the 3 schools:
LBSU: 4-1 (vs UH 3-0, vs BYU 1-1)
BYU: 3-2 (vs LBSU 1-1, vs UH 2-1)
UH: 1-5 (vs LBSU 0-3, vs BYU 1-2)
I’d like to see a rule where if a player crossing the center line contacts a player on the other side, leading to an injury that sidelines a player, then that player that crossed the line must sit the rest of the match until the injured player can return to the match.
89. there was no intent. things happen in the sport like that.
Announced crowd of 2828
I’ll be very surprised if UH gets to host a first-round match in the NCAA tournament. If I’m not mistaken the NCAA has held off on announcing whether first-round matches will be held at school sites or in Columbus, and I suspect the reason is that the NCAA wants to minimize travel costs (which I’m pretty sure they have to pay for tournament participants). My guess is that if UH had won today and earned a first-round bye then the first round would have been played at school sites, but with UH now likely to be playing in the first round and seeded above its first-round opponent, I expect the NCAA to opt for the first-round matches being played in Columbus.
92. IMHO the NCAA was testing the waters for when they expand the tournament to eight. Teams put in bids that would guarantee certain things so they NCAA would not lose money by sending a team to Hawaii. But it doesn’t make geographic sense to do it. The lower seeds would be Barton from the East coast and another MPSF team (maybe) or Penn State
think the coaches have said they wanted to have all teams at the site to have the ‘championship experience. But we’ll’see what happens.
Or I could be wrong and the Committee could seed UH 5th or 6th and send them to play on an opponent’s home court in the first round. That would be a crime but it wouldn’t surprise me.
Since when has the NCAA made any geographical sense? UH is the only venue that will MAKE money.
My kid got to the game late and said it was crowded. I guess she’s not used to seeing an area more than half full.
The NCAA has a “championship experience” in their laps…likely #3 and #4 seeds are the perennial top two in attendance (I’m assuming).
89. The rule would be intent neutral. Players at the net are at high risk of injury if the opposing team is crossing the center line. The rule would prevent teams that are playing out of control and causing injury to the opposition from then benefiting from it, intended or not. Minnesota would have lost Wilhite, tonight Long Beach would have had to sit Defalco I believe, although I’m not sure exactly which Long Beach player rolled under Moll. Intent of the rule is to keep teams from unduly benefiting when they violate a rule which then causes an injury which removes a player from the court. Volleyball is by design and intent not a physical contact sport, like football or basketball.
96. There is no scenario in which UH is seeded lower than 4th.
98. Hope you’re right. Remember what “NCAA” stands for. “No Clue At All.”
89. I could agree with you in principle, but the question is, what if the situation were reverse and a UH player stepped over the center line and caused an opposing player to sprain an ankle? Would you want the UH player to be ejected the rest of the match? Rules work both ways. Cindy had a point that it was unintentional. Of course, net violations are unintentional and players get penalized by losing their team a point, but they don’t get ejected as it’s not a flagrant violation. So what do you think?
Any update on Hendrik?
Hendrik’s Insta says it’s an Ankle Sprain.
His hashtag says #setbacksareforcomebacks
100. Not sure why you think I wouldn’t want the rule to apply to both teams. Really? The center line rule exists for player safety, both sides. The rule I propose would ensure that when one side is playing out of control, causing an injury by crossing the center line and resulting in an injury that removes a player from the match, that the player causing the injury also be removed from the match. In football players can be ejected for personal fouls, intent to cause injury isn’t a requirement. Simply playing out of control in a way that put others at undue risk of harm is sufficient, actual injury to the opposition isn’t even a factor. What I propose is hardly precedent breaking within sports in general. In hockey, players that high stick and raise elbows into a check get the penalty box, no need to actually cause an injury or determine intent. The act itself is of sufficient risk to the other team that the out of control player be removed from play. What I propose is a rule that states that the team that actually does cause an injury should not then benefit by that out of control player remaining in the match while their victim is punished with injury, and that the team with that out of control player not benefit by that player being allowed to continue play while the other team is punished. In hockey, such unbalanced results are handled by ‘enforcers’ who ensure that there is 1 for 1 attrition on the ice. You play high sticks and elbows, you don’t get to benefit from it, one way or the other in hockey. I hate to see volleyball come to that.
Hope it’s just a grade one ankle sprain and not grade 2.
Grade one he could possibly be back in two weeks.
thanks for the Mol stuff. been writing all Wade could say is that it will be re-evaluated when the team gets back. and that it didn’t appear catastrophic.
good night. don’t forget 7 a.m. HST ncaa.com.
