Question, how come the guys don’t have such a huge tournament for NCAA vs. the girls? Is there a whole lot more girls teams vs. guys teams? 2nd question, how come UH is moving conferences? Will it be more of an advantage for us? Is anyone else moving from MPSF to the new one we are moving to next year?
There are around 334 d1 women’s volleyball teams and probably less than 100 d1 and d2 men’s volleyball teams.
@T103 – See URL: http://www.bigwest.org/story.asp?STORY_ID=19222
LBSU, UCI, CSUN, UCSB, San Diego and UH. (No PAC-12 teams and no BYU)
For argument’s sake, let’s say UH wins the MPSF tournament and gets the automatic bid. Would they still be relegated to the play-in game or get a 1 or 2 seed and the bye into the Final Four? Any thoughts?
@jm2375 If Hawai’i wins the MPSF Tourney, I would think Hawai’i would get one of the top 2 seeds and get a bye into the National Semis. Hawai’i is right behind LBSU & BYU in the RPI. By beating them this week, I would give them one of the top seeds
2. thanks for answering the questions. was at practice.
3. of course there’s on BYU (WCC) or Pac-12 teams. They are in their own conferences. The Big West is for Big West schools. UCSD is an affiliate member
4-5. Think much depends on what happens with Ohio State and the MIVA.
3) No Peperdine either. Next year the MPSF will be made up of Pac12 and WCC (BYU & Pepp) teams plus a couple more.
I guess being a Big West Member, we had no choice but to leave. Seems like to me The MPSF had better competition. I guess making the NCAA will be easier now.
Making the NCAA would actually have been easier in the MPSF next season. BYU and UCLA lose a lot of talent while Long Beach brings it’s main core, so UH will have a dog fight next season for the big west title with Long Beach.
Moving Hawaii to the Big West is beneficial in many ways. With the possibility that UCSD goes to DI and joins the Big West made it make sense to start men’s volleyball for the Big West. With another conference that feeds an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, it may force the NCAA to expand knowing that 5 of the 6 spots are auto bids leaving only 1 at-large. Plus this is where RPI is going to make a huge difference. In 2015 when Pepperdine upset Hawaii in the MPSF tournament, there were some disagreements as to how Hawaii got in the NCAA tournament over Pepperdine but the committee was saying Hawaii had the better RPI. The year after that is when schools scrambled to schedule more non-conference games so it guarantees them a better look for RPI. So next season with a lot more open space in the schedule since Hawaii will only have 10 conference games, we will see a lot more tournaments and non-conference games with every team. Plus the Outrigger Invitational will be so much better now that everyone wants to come back since all the good teams bailed because they wanted to face two MPSF teams in that tournament. Now we can get them all back.
10. Not sure why you say that moving was beneficial. There was no option. Any Big West school with a men’s volleyball program had to go to the BWC.
There was no question Hawaii had the better RPI in 2015. Pepperdine didn’t then and still doesn’t play much out of conference. Hawaii has played 29 matches, travels to play MIVA teams. Pepperdine has played 22, 18 of those in the MPSF.

11. Regarding why Hawaii’s move to the Big West was beneficial:

The author should be familiar.
Hoping Ohio St takes care of business on their end. Not saying they would do this, but it could help their conference get more exposure to have more of their conference on the national stage. Even if they don’t win their tournament, they’re in, so they could throw it knowing it will keep a west team out of the tournament.
Not saying they would do that or they will, but sportsmanship is sportsmanship.
Hawaii just needs to win their own conference tournament, which I know they can. They just keep getting better and better. And BYU on a neutral court is a very different team then at their gym.
#12 Good for Tara. She was big time in HS and club VB here in CO. What it could have been if she made it onto Robyn’s staff and possibly add CO as a recruiting ground.
#14 My thoughts exactly. Tara is an all-time favorite of mine. Also, winning the Big West and getting the automatic bid next year will not be easy. Right now the most important thing is to beat BYU.
Cindy, thank you for the explanation on “Order of Finish”.
Based on rankings a few weeks ago 5 of 6 teams in next years MPSF and next year’s Big West teams were ranked. Competition will still be stiff.
Surprised Hittle spent only one year in Dartmouth. Wish her well at Portand State.
I’ve always thought “order of finish” is similar to what baseball would call the game winning RBI.
Order of start is not necessary order of finish. If UH wins flights 5 and 4 and flight 3 runs into over time and flight 2 finish before flight 3 then flight 2 would be the one who wins us the dual.
In 3-2 wins, it could help us see who won us the match. 3-2 wins does necessarily means the match came down to how flight 1 did.
I don’t know if it was meant for that but that is what I used that piece of information for.
19. thought I explained what it meant but, as you say, could be likened to baseball should the game-winning RBI be a walkoff. The box will usually say something like
1 out when winning run scored.
