Happy Birthday to Stijn.
So if you are on game tracker, you’ll notice new pairing at No. 5 and Kan-Homayun up to 4
Iosia is no longer on the team. Ah Mow-Santos wanted her to concentrate on indoor from what I was told.
So Zalopany is with Ozee at 5, first time they’ve played together.
5. Zalopany-Ozee lose, 21-16, 21-17
Warriors-Bruins under way. no change for Hawaii: Van Tilburg, Rosenmeier, Mol, Franciskovic, Gasman, Fey, Tuileta
No Ma’a for UCLA (yet), Hatch at libero. Misery playing, had been told he might be out due to concussion protocol.
I don’t agree with iosia having to give up beach, she shows a lot of promise and beach was helping her fitness and game overall.
UH making a lot of silly errors right now letting the Bruins stick around.
Iosia/zalopany won at 5 against the waves last week:(
Wow silly errors continue not sure why no communication between Stijn and Jennings there.
This warrior team has major problems closing on the road no killer instinct!
Warriors had set point at 24-22, 24-23, 25-24, UCLA wins 28-16, van Tilburg blocked by Ma’a and Stahl to end it.
3 Maglio-Weaver lose 21-14, 21-16
This is it for the warriors time to pull this off if they want to host and get an at large , tomorrow is senior night for the Bruins.
Kan-Homayun force Set 3 after pulling it out 24-22.
Are there challenges? These officials are miserable…
Hawaii is the only place that has technology to use challenges ,pretty sad.
IMO Rado is showing he should have played all season , coaches got it sooo wrong.
14. Not sad, but video challenge OR 4 line judges should be the norm for this level of volleyball.
Kan-Homayun take Set 3 15-12.
Warriors take Set 2 25-23.
Ma’a commits so many center line violations and deep dishes the ball when setting. Not surprised that UCLA gets so many homer calls.
#2 — not of any consequence or importance, but other late changes to the online roster are that Rooks is no longer even listed on the roster (she was listed all season, even though she was suspended) and now Annie and Norene are not listed either.
Ma’a with the THROW!!!
Hard to say the coaches got it wrong after the streak they went on. Why change something that has been working for that long of a stretch. I understand Rado is an integral part of the team, and who knows what this team would be like had he got more playing time, but for their winning stretch, nothing was broken… why fix what isn’t broken.
#16 — that was 15-12 in the third set. Think you had a typo (25-12).
Winning stretch happened against easy part of the schedule it’s obvious we need Rado to play with the top 3 in the league , play for the top not middle of the pack should be the motto.
19 . Just don’t see how playing sand will hurt Iosia instead of help,it’s helped Maglio big time. And playing beach keeps you fit.
Nice UCLA campfire D! Pass out the marshmallows…
They need to card Ma’a! He’s mouthing off too much…
Yes it STARTED in the easy part of the schedule… and continued on. At that time There was a lineup and it worked, and it kept working. Again, hard to say they got it wrong when everything was going right.
Just imagine how good Rado would be if he got more playing time against the easier teams or he should have redshirted and he would be around for four more seasons instead of 3.
Thought I mentioned earlier that Rooks no longer with the team. Mitchem and Iosia were late decisions this week not to play anymore.
Flight 1 Martin-Tucker break 19-19 tie in Set 1, win 21-19.
Nikki-Ka’iwi need to rally after losing their first set and currently down 6-4 in the second. Need courts 1 and 2 to come through in order to get the win.
Warriors were up 24-19. UCLA closed to 24-21. UH wins it 25-21 on Ma’a error
Like I said before i would have run the Stijn/rado lineup from the get go and forced it to work. UH has them
Both for two more years. I think the coaches should have had more foresight that they would need both Stijn and Rado hitting at the same time eventually to have a chance for a national title.
This really should be over already in a sweep, hope warriors keep the momentum going for set 4 it’s a must win.
Card Ma’a!!!! Thrown him out!!! Whiner!
Rooks is a big loss is she transferring then?
.34 he had a point though.
Warriors really need the killer instinct they have blown way too many leads late in sets on the road.
Gasman seems to have lost confidence in his serve, too bad because his serve could be a huge weapon.
Pepperdine cliniches with a 2-0 win at No. 2. minutes later, Hawaii wins 2-0 at Flight 1.
That’s what Jennings needs to do more of, he should be the deadliest offensive weapon at his position in the country.
20. Oh well think losing Iosia hurt them a bit as they won at 5 last week. kan/homayun stepped it up.
The lineup UH had got them to a 22-4 record. Likely will get them an at-large as well.
I’m sure getting VTB and Parapunov in the lineup together next year will be Wade’s No. 1 priority. And I dunno, isn’t depth what matches like today are? Wade pulled VTB after the first set and then Hawaii goes up. He knows what he’s doing.
For the Beach team, gosh, another 3-2 loss to a Top 5 team. Hawaii has firmly established itself as the only team outside looking in on the national contenders. And then there’s everyone else.
Iosia is a pretty big loss for UH Beach tho. Guess Ah Mow is REALLY gonna invest in Iosia to pull her out.
What good is beating everyone else when u go 0-4 against the top two , It’s not like Uh would have struggled to beat everyone else with Rado/Stijn in tbe lineup anyway we don’t know how they would have done with that lineup. WE do know that with Rado Uh has beaten UCLA and taken long Beach to 5.
And that at large bid is no foregone conclusion although today’s win helps but UH needs Ohio state to take care of business in the MIVA tournament.
Rado is a monster who needs to be on the floor at all times he has been wasted on the bench most of the season.
Hawaii wins 25-18. will host next Saturday
36. He had no point. He can’t see the play. More reason for replay. Spreaw could’ve challenged and LOST based on Ma’a poor judgement…
I feel pulling Iosia as well as most of the Beach players other than Maglio is a great idea to concentrate indoors. Indoors and Beach take up from August to May.
I feel after the Fall season the indoor team should really concentrate on getting stronger and more fit in the weight room and concentrate on skills that they all are lacking. I like the idea if the indoor team had a 2nd constraining sand team like Stanford and Nebraska. I think playing too much volleyball and not honing on getting better individually during the months of Feb to May shows in the lack of change come indoor season. I like that Coach Robyn takes the indoor season really seriously. It is also a good idea as the girls train that they get adequate REST away from too much volleyball and concentrate on academics
Sorry i meant a Sand Volleyball Crosstraining team that doesnt compete in the Big West and NCAA
Wasn’t there talk of eventually going with an All Beach player only team and do away with crossovers?
I think this should be the time. Robyn probably not thrilled to lose time with her players and we getting some big time beach players coming in so it would better for each side to concentrate on their respective sports.
48. I think Cross training helps more than it hurts that’s why Nebraska does it every year.
Mags for example would never be in position to possibly play opposite next season if it hadn’t been for playing beach. It’s helped her all around game tremendously.
Iosia is the key to success next year for the indoor team and it makes sense that Coach Robyn would want her to concentrate on setting indoor. It’s unfortunate for the BeachBows in that she was a part of a successful pairing, but a setter doesn’t benefit as much as other positons by playing beach. She needs to get as many reps setting with Coach Robyn as she can instead of working on hitting, serve receiving and bump setting; skills that will not greatly benefit her indoor career. She’s only a freshman and may play beach later in her career, but indoor should be her priority right now.
50. Beach is helping her stay fit, and also never hurts for her defense to improve.
What I don’t like is it disrupted a very good pairing she had going on with Zalopany why mess that up now? why not just play out the rest of the season , only a month left anyway. and then Iosia can skip beach the next three years and play beach after her senior year/grad year if she chooses.
Another good reason for indoor players to play beach, it gets them more hours training with the assistant coaches. I suspect that’s why Nebraska really does it.
Hawaii beats Cal Poly 4-1, lost at Flight 1 Martin-Tucker in 3.
51. As for Iosia, I don’t quite understand the decision either and agree that with just a few weeks left it didn’t make sense other than i know she was finding it hard with both sports and academics. Ah Mow-Santos went back to Las Vegas and they are pretty much done with indoor practice.
yes, there has been talk to moving to all beach players but when you only have six scholarships it helps that some athletes want to cross over from indoor. Still, it takes rare athletes to be able to do both successfully. i.e. Maglio, Taylor and until recently Iosia. None of the other indoor players has broken into the competition pairs.
UCI defeats Stanford 3-1
Hawaii wraps up No. 3 seed, UCI No. 4 and Anteaters will host No. 5 UCLA
Warriors will get either Stanford or Pepperdine or USC. Will look at the tiebreakers later.
Congrats to the Warriors in getting the win today. Great team win and the depth shined. As fans we do not know what combinations they work on in practice and behind closed doors, but having confidence in whoever comes in is an unmeasurable in it’s contribution to team chemistry.
An obvious plus on Parapunov not playing much early is he is fresh and there is very little film on him. Teams will have to pay extra attention now on how they strategize and prepare for the Warriors. I believe the coaches have a well constructed vision in place in the evolution of the very dynamic inclusion of both van Tilburg and Parapunov. As the Warriors progress through to the finish they no doubt will both be huge factors in their success.
I was wondering if this tournament we are hosting next sat, is it our conference tournament or is it like the NCAA tournament for champs of vball? I heard that the NCAA tourney for guys vball is not as big as girls, so I’m just asking. Is it this tourney and then another one with everyone across the country and then the final 4?
Well if they are done with indoor practice and do not have an off season practice schedule for the rest of the indoor team, then it does seem strange that Iosia would not finish the beach season. As such, knowing that, there must be an even more compelling reason for the move.
@QWarriorFan, I agree with you completely that UH doesn’t have the killer instinct to put teams away. I think it has to do with our aloha spirit in Hawaii and the fact that our college athletes are treated like superstars here more than anywhere else what with being on tv and newsprint so much that they relax too much and lose that competitive toughness and edge that championship teams need to have. I think even our mainland players lose that edge after being here for awhile. Our coaches need to recognize this and develope that toughness/meaness.
Secondly, Ive also felt that Wade should have continued using Rado as a full-time starting player ever since the Long Beach game. I felt he gave up on that lineup/rotation too soon without letting it play out more. Rado is too much of a beast to let waste away on the bench. I would favor using him even at OH instead of Rosenmier or Mautautia. I don’t think its too late to do so; especially against the upcoming tournament teams.
46, Bleachercoach – I agree with you and coach Robin about having Iosia play and concentrate on indoor volleyball only. It’s the higher profile team, makes more money and Iosia could stand to improve on some of her skills. Besides, it is really tough to play two sports and keep up with your academics in college . She can keep fit by busting her okole in the weight room and in the gym. If you notice, Robin specifically stated after her first practice with the team that if she is coming to the gym giving 100%, she expects the same from her players I think she has served notice that she is going to drive her players much harder than Shoji has recently. I’m really enjoying her already!
In this interview Robyn did say she thought some of the players looked out of shape

@uhfan – tanks fo da great link. Da Ah Mow-Santos era has begun!
58. I don’t think it’s too late either. The current lineup has done well to clinch the 3 seed in the MPSF but now UH needs to set it’s sights higher and think NCAA TITLE but to achieve it they will need to take chances.
One of those is to throw Rado out there and let him swing away.
This is UH’s best chance because UH won’t have a big physical setter like Jennings after this season.
Also Jennings needs to be really offensive,
he can be a huge weapon for UH that no other team has at setter.
I think his play will be crucial for UH.
Thanks HanaBrada and uhfan
The utube of Robyn speaking at her 1st spring practice is the best and most excited i have been for the longest time. She is ready to clean house and I am a 110% believer of requiring them being fit and in top shape.
It shows the desire and passion of an athlete. She demands 100% if she is coaching 100%. Yup she means business and I am liking it already!!! Plus When a coach says she still has a desire to play and backs it up at practice..wow! I feel we will be seeing newly revived pure thoroughbreds on that volleyball court in the new future
49. I’m not sure that plan of “possibly” moving Maglio to opposite is gonna happen. If it is, it would be because she developed a potent back row attack. She’s had opportunities to play back row last season when Anderson and the rest of the DSs were being used to pass/serve for the OHs, and she was no defensive whiz. I think it would be wise to keep Maglio in the middle, where she dominates both in offense and defense. Moving her to the Opposite position isn’t a guarantee that she will contribute more points, what it very likely will do is keep her hitting percentage down. Plus, she won’t have as many blocking opportunities. Burns is a very poor plocker. If they take Maglio out of the middle, UH will be left with no decent middle blocker in all six rotations.
I think moving Maglio to OPP is off the table already. It was a Dave Shoji idea and the idea went when Dave left. It will do the team and Emily injustice to move her there now with so little time to make it work. If the move was to be made, it would have been this spring. With Emily playing beach, there was not time really for her to focus on that.
Not sure why Dave wanted to do something like this anyway. Could possibly ruin a girl’s senior year by moving her at another position and possibly not working out and turning her into an average OPP instead of an All Conference type middle.
If Emily was a bench warmer, then there is nothing to lose with a move like that. But to move our best MB to another position….IDK. Took Nicki a couple years to become a big time OPP. Maglio will only have a few months to master that position. Left side to OPP like Van Tilburg is easier. MB to OPP requires change in your approach and footwork.
Keep Maglio in the middle, but let her play back row. That would give us another weapon. She a good passer with great range, she just need more experience playing back row.
About Norene, I have a feeling it’s needing to keep up with her school work. It’s crunch time for students right now.
Reading between the lines, I think rabbit ears is right. School first, then volleyball. Smart move for Norene in the long run.
Another possible scenario have popped into my small mind about why Robyn suggest that Noreen focus on indoor.
Noreen is the qb of the team. The leader of the team. If your leader is playing another sports, it would be difficult to get on the same page with the other girls.
Robyn probably wants Noreen to take the leadership role and call the girls together for open gyms, workouts and all that other team bonding stuff. If Noreen can show the work ethic that the coach wants from her then it would be easier for the rest of the team to follow. Robyn wants Noreen to be the coach on the floor.
Robyn can make Norene the best setter in the world. Do it her way.
69. No offense but oh please.
Nikki’s been playing two sports for FOUR years and was fine.
It’s not for anyone and it’s a lot more work but if someone wants to do both because they love playing both, let em!! I do not want UH to be like USC where they don’t let their athletes decide on their own.
69. What you say makes perfect sense to me. Norene needs to focus on what is most important to her and Robyn strongly suggested it.
I think what I dislike about Iosia having to quit now, is the past month that she has been playing with Zalopany, that time would have been HUGE for someone else like Amy Ozee to get experience instead and build chemistry with Zalopany. It’s not fair to the sand bows.
wow Claes/Hughes finally lose to St Marys of all teams lol

new thread up up for Warriors and SandBows
57. I was mistaken. they are not done. Spoke with Ah Mow-Santos earlier today. She is returning from Las Vegas tomorrow and is having practice next week
Did want to clarify a few things about Iosia’s decision but need to pay attention to Warriors and SandBows.
see new thread Later.
