Order of finish: Doubles (4,3,2,1,5);
I’m a little surprised Emma Smith has not broken into the pairs. She came with a lot more beach accolades than Iosia. I mean, Norene is an exceptional talent so not totally surprised. But just a little that Smith isn’t out there. Maybe chemistry?
I am just super surprised at the beach pairings, where did Ozee and Huddleston go? they won against Zona the first weekend of the season and now UH lost at 5 to them.. I don’t get it, but I guess the coaches know best.
Ozee and Huddleston, sometimes together and other times with different partners, have played in the sixes. Today, the former played with Anderson (I think), and the latter played with Higgins (!) in Shinn’s jersey. I have not yet seen Smith play a competitive match. Sydney squared played Florida State in the exhibition (instead of a Nebraska pair).
UH warriors passing and blocking and defense is just so bad right now and Jennings is being predictable.
welp, UH looks even worst than last night, they don’t even look top 10 now đ
Warriors not looking real good today. And Grosh’s serving keeps giving them problems.
Cougars were up 16-8, not its 19-12.
Matautia in for Fey.
As for Smith, the last two weeks the indoor players were mostly doing Indoor and that’s where she’s been. have mentioned that they are limited in practice time per week, regardless if it’s one sport or two.
Maglio has ‘volunteered’ to come to several beach practices and is used to the grind.
There was visible frustration in the fives during the Arizona dual, so I wonder if there will be some shuffling.
Homayun is my fave player. She’s a fighter, trying to get every call.
I would guess Emma is redshirting in beach? Makes sense. Kind of wish they redshirted Ozee also.
8. Try Iosia/Ozee?
Very odd timeout by UH IMHO. BYU serving for the set at 24-19
Hawaii’s serving needs to put more pressure on BYU or else this is gonna be another long night for the Warriors. SCAREY that BYU is playing without its best player and still beating the crap out of Hawaii. I really felt Hawaii was in the same tier as LBSU, BYU and Ohio St. but not after the last 3 sets âšī¸.
BYU wins 25-19.
Smith might be redshirting, haven’t heard that.
UH outhit BYU but is doing poor in everything else.
Matautia in for Fey to start Set 2.
Emma is sorely needed on the indoor team. Her passing makes Iosia’s sets (and the offense) so much better. Additionally, in light of Hall’s statement that UH passing was horrendous against Minnesota one can imagine what would have happened without Emma.
Mol aces Sander, UH up 6-3. TO BYU
16. not sure what you’re saying. She is on the indoor team. and is concentrating on that. they have another indoor exhibition on Tuesday.
At Queen’s, FSU 4-1 over Nebraska
UH was up 19-14 but BYU has rallied to 19-17. TO Warriors.
The errors late in this set are comical for UH. Yikes
Worsley mangles a free ball, Jennings sets a fallen Matuatia. Ugh frustrating.
This will be demoralizing. Hawaii led 23-21. BYU has tied it at 23. TO Warriors.
Gasman is playing like a freshmen this series.
Warriors hitting .435 but BYU .565. Cougars serving for the set at 24-23
terrible choke job that set and I have to blame Jennings, his set location late was just bad. He needs to be more offensive also.
Gasman 2-1-5 but he is slow on the block.
BYU wins 25-23 on Matautia’s error.
That was very upsetting. If we don’t end up winning this match after that goof up, I am debating on moving on to cheering for another UH sport. That was just ridiculous.
Extremely upsetting, that may have been the match sad to say. Hope I am wrong.
Complete meltdown, the poor play by Worsley and Austin tripping costed Hawaii that set… Oh along with Gasmans whiff and Jennings dump on two… Just pure decision making from point 22 on… It’s a shame because they played well for 3/4ths of the set…
28. You’re right. They shot themselves in the feet. Since I can’t watch UH live anyway, it’s hard for me to be a diehard fan. At least I can watch BYU matches live. Blame OC sports for blanking out anyone in Hawaii who doesn’t have cable or can’t have it any. This upsets me far more than Hawaii losing to BYU.
Think it started with them over arguing that call , they should have let that go and move on quickly, instead they make mental error after mental error to basically give that set away. I want to see Rado play in set 3. Austin makes too many errors.
Take that back Austin’s playing well, Just too bad he fell to help BYU get the 24th point and then hit out on set point in set 2. Sitll think this team needs to utilize Rado more.
Jeez the warrior block is non existent.
BYU is good but Hawaii just did not show up. No block, Fey struggled big time, when he was good the past month. Jennings also struggled this weekend. Now they need to finish 5-0 ( including quarterfinal match of MPSF tourney) to even have a chance at the at large and those two matches at UCLA will be tough.
They really laid an egg this weekend in Provo AGAIN.
Going 0-4 at BYU and Long beach is a bitter pill to swallow, we need to sweep UCLA ( or at the least split and then make the MPSF tourney finals) , and HOPE that OSU wins the MIVA tournament.
I dunno why Rado isn’t put in to be the 2nd Leftside. Just to try that out. We need a big block on the Right side blocking their Opposite. And a lefty playing on that side may even throw off the opposing teams block for a change.
37. Basically feel it’s a wasted year for Rado, Wade will really regret not redshirting him when Rado is a senior. All he is being used for as a serving sub?? come on.
Wow never say never for this team, hope they pull this off somehow.
Annie’s playing in the sixth.
Man Uh can’t buy a block, BYU is covering everything ugh.
feel like we’ve been here before UH up 23-22. BYU at math point 24-23
UH’s block is soo poor, thought we were the top blocking team in the nation Ugh.
BYU wins 28-26
RE: #16
Cindy,
What I was trying to say is that the Indoor team needs Emma much more than the Sandbows. Considering that they all have coursework to do, concentration in one discipline may be the best course (if she wants to graduate on time).
RE: Warriors
BYU is a bit better. Ditto Long Beach State. Viewed in regard to the competition, Hawaii is probably ranked appropriately. Appears Worsley will have to wait until next year to speed up the offense.
Well, I actually like the fight we put up in the end instead of fading away, even though we got swept. So I’ll stick with this team still. đ
BUT next time on the neutral court in the MPSF tourney or NCAAs (hopefully we make it), we better pay back!
OK that was disappointing. Laid an egg in Provo yet again. no wins for Wade at provo ever lol If we never play at Provo again I will be okay with that lol
UH needs to sweep UCLA. No question. and we have to hope Ohio state wins the Miva tournament and that UCI fades late, UCI has wins over OSU and BYU that UH does not, and I could see the committee picking them OVER UH if UH falters at UCLA and UCI makes the MPSF finals.
Another thing, two years ago UH completely fell apart after losing two in provo, hope that does not happen this year. They need to regroup and get their confidence back.
BYU always seems to find a way to pull out the close sets, in this series Hawaii seemed to blow it or not be able to close it out. Happy Hawaii made it super competitive at the end however everyone knew Stijn was getting every swing and it was only time before BYU blocked him for point. We need another solid option at OH to hold the middle from the opposing team to create more split blocks.. Hawaii is a solid top 8 team with this lineup but I feel we are lacking at the OH position thus not being able to beat the top 3 teams…
49. why do you think I am advocating for Rado joining the lineup?? And I still think it’s a mistake for Wade not to force the Rado/Stijn lineup to work, we have them for two more years, it needs to work and I think it will, it’s only a matter of time but it had to be forced early in the season and now it’s too late.
It was a mistake to give up on that lineup after the Long Beach Series, UH took long beach to five, which is probably the best they have played against a top 4 team in a while and yet they still gave up on that lineup right away.
Wade needs to be fired. When you face a team with equal or better talent than you it comes down to coaching, and Wade is really lacking in that. BYU didn’t even have Patch or their top middle. And the MPSF tournament semifinals will be at BYU or Long Beach, Hawaii is 0-4 at both of those teams. 2-12 in sets, including losing 12 straight sets to both those teams. Also Fey is horrible and UH always chokes in big matches.
RE: #50
Outside of a faster offense, Wade probably has no choice but to re-visit Rado at Opposite. If Stijn (at OH) does not pass well maybe break conventional wisdom and have the Opposite on serve receive (Rado at OH). (Nobody wants to go 2 on serve receive.)
52. I think Stijn can pass though, he just struggled with Defalco’s serve, but he’s probably the best server in the MPSF.
UH must go 5-0 to the MPSF semis, to get the at large , and hopefully UCI will lose a few down the road that they shouldn’t.
Man I just knew that first match at Long Beach that UH blew would come back to haunt them.
We need Stanford or Pepperdine to come through with a win against UCI, also will help if Lewis loses to Ball State or Loyola and of course Ohio State needs to win the MIVA tournament.
52. seriously? UH now 3-25 in Provo. not like Wade the only coach to lose there.
#1 USC 4, #5 Hawai’i 1
1. Sara Hughes/Kelly Claes (USC) def. Morgan Martin/Mikayla Tucker (UH) 21-16, 24-22
2. Allie Wheeler/Sophie Bukovec (USC) def. Nikki Taylor/Ka’iwi Schucht (UH) 15-21, 21-11, 15-10
3. Emily Maglio/Laurel Weaver (UH) def. Nicolette Martin/Terese Cannon (USC) 21-10, 21-23, 15-7
4. Abril Bustamante/Joy Dennis (USC) def. Carly Kan/Ari Homayun (UH) 21-17, 21-16
5. Jenna Belton/Jo Kremer (USC) def. Amy Ozee/Hannah Zalopany (UH) 22-20, 21-18
Match Notes:
USC 11-0; National ranking #1
Hawai’i 11-2; National ranking #5
Order of finish: Doubles (1,4,5,6,2,3);
16 When Coach Santos comes in hopefully all positions will be up for grabs. I think Iosia and Mags is set already.
I also agree that they should not have given up on that lineup with Rado and Stijn on the court at the same time. We had time to get that lineup up build chemistry. Oh well, I was hoping for some changes in set 3. This is the part of Shoji’s coaching that made him a master at his craft. He would try different things and shake things up. Hence, the McKenna Ross lineup against Arizona. He is a master in game adjuster. When you lose the first two games, you have nothing to lose at that point. Try something different when all that depth is on that bench.
59- what?
60, He tried something different, he put Matautia in from set 2 and Solbrig in set 3.

new thread up for Monday
59. I’m sure all players will be evaluated during fall camp. Ah Mow-Santos is familiar with much of the team but not those who were freshmen last season nor the incoming recruits, at least in terms of working with them in the gym.
