Ah Mow Santos the new head coach, I didn’t see that coming at all.
Who knew the shy girl out of McKinley would become a D1 head coach. She has grown tremendously since her days as a setter at UH.
I think a great hire and along the lines that Matlin has show to hire (young, some what inexperienced, TONS of passion for their sport).
Didn’t see this coming. Not sure what to think but I am being optimistic. I remember her when she first played at Klum. Very shy. Was not an attacking setter, but great hands.
She was obviously an outstanding player being a mult-Olympic setter and I hope that transitions to a great coach. Quite young and I think that is a plus. We need alot of energy as a coach. I suppose with any coaching job, if you don’t put up the numbers, you just find another, but I think she will deliver.
Just for info for those who didn’t know, Robyn has been coaching club for many years and among those on her club team were Adora Anae, Nikki Taylor, McKenna Granato, Faith Maafala, Clare-Marie Anderson, Taylor Higgins, Savannah Kahakai, that’s about all I can recall.
Super happy about the selection of Robin. Having lived it first hand, Robin knows what it takes to sustain the program. In the selection of Robin, Dave’s legacy continues.
And to Coach Shoji, thank you for pouring your heart and soul into the program for these past 42 years. No one cared more for this program than you.
And to be sure, Dave could never has put so much of himself into the program without the great support and sacrifice of the Shoji family especially his wife Mary. Thank you.
My fingers won’t actually bend that way anymore, but I’d give the hire two shakas if they would.
Surprising hire. Not at all disappointed though. Now Robin need to hire super recruiters/coaches. Hope Hall is one of them.
I love Robyn. I thought she was no longer an option when she moved to LV. Dave Matlin has continued to go with coaches who will be honest. Thank you Dave Shoji for everything and I hope you find time to help Robyn out for a few years.
The woman coach jinx in the NCAAs …Will Robyn be the first woman coach to win a DI national championship in women’s volleyball? I hope she makes history in that department. Mary Wise and Lisa Love were close.
Guess no one with head coaching experience applied. Love Robyn though but I am really skeptical about her head coaching abilities.
Very much surprised but delighted at the choice of Robyn. Indeed as previously posted, she will carry on the legacy that is Dave Shoji. Although I’ve only started watching Wahine Volleyball in the last few years, I’ve come to appreciate the legend that is Dave Shoji. He has given us so much and I’m so grateful to have been a part of it; even if it was just in the stands yelling “Let’s Go Bows”! Godspeed and Good Luck in your retirement! Mahalo nui loa for everything!
Really pumped by this news. On the one hand we get a coach already steeped in Wahine Volleyball tradition. And on the other hand, an Olympian player with some years of professional play. I assume she won’t be coaching a carbon copy of Shoji’s game strategy. Very excited to see what new she can bring.
Being an olympian doesn’t mean anything as a head coach, how many succesful former olympians are coaching? Karch is the only one I can think of.
Paula Weishoff didn’t do well at Irvine.

I’m confident in her coaching ability. I’m in the dark as to whether she can recruit. We need a big jump in that area.
Did Dan Fisher apply? Was really hopping it would be him.

new thread up to continue the discussion.
and yes, somewhat surprised given that one of the main things they said they were looking for was head coaching experience.
maybe more surprised since she has a newborn who is special needs.
Hall will be running the program until she is able to move back from Vegas, which includes getting her kids and dad back here.
