UH football: Walk-on kickers and the Spelman legend

With Rigo Sanchez’s graduation, the Warriors appear to be set on finding his replacement through the walk-on program.

Stephen Yaffe, a walk-on, redshirted this past season. The Warriors will audition kickers when spring training opens on Feb. 20. This past Friday’s workouts, by NCAA rules, did not permit the use of a football. The Warriors also can add kickers this summer.

It will be a familiar strategy. Sanchez, Dan Kelly and Eric Hannum initially joined the Warriors as walk-ons before earning scholarships during their first UH season.

Hannum, who was from Temecula, Calif., said he only had enough money to cover a semester’s tuition and school expenses. He said he was placed on scholarship “three or four weeks” after joining the Warriors. He had a successful UH career, remained in Hawaii, and now runs a successful MRI/PET imaging business. He also consults local kickers.

Kenton Chun, a walk-on kicker and part-time magician, had a magical moment when he kicked the winning field goal to beat Idaho in 2011.

Then there was Richard Spelman, whose 37-yard field goal with 30 seconds left helped UH defeat Utah, 10-7, in 1982.

Dick Tomey recalled that he held a kicking contest between Spelman and Lee Larsen before the game.

“I believe in kicking contests,” Tomey said this morning. “The person who wins the kicking contest at least has confidence that night that he can do it. We did it at Arizona a bunch and we did it here some.”

By winning the contest, Spelman would get the call on FG attempts.

“As it turns out, we go the whole game and we don’t kick a field, and the score is 7-7. We’re making the last drive and we’re getting ready for the field goal. Basically, we get into position, and I say, ‘Field goal! Field goal!’ And nobody is there.”

To Tomey’s recollection, the conversation then went like this:

Tomey: “Spelman, what the hell are you doing?”
Spelman: ‘Is it still me?’
Tomey: “Get your ass in there.”

“So he runs in there,” Tomey recalled. “He doesn’t even have time to set up. We snap the ball, and he makes it. He said,
‘I’m so glad it happened so fast because I didn’t have time to think about it at all.'”

Tomey added: “He won the contest, but the contest happened three hours ago in his mind. He didn’t know he still was the kicker.”

Spelman, who had a good UH career, was awarded a scholarship that year.

It was Spelman’s only field goal that season.

    First! Good memories…

It will be difficult, but I hope they find a good PK to replace Rigo. I think they have a few options for punter, but it is difficult to find an accurate kicker with the range of Rigo.

    Alex Trifonovitch #46 (Punahou ’15) is also a placekicker/punter.

Hannum owns Invision – a beautiful facility with an excellent staff. I’ve had several MRIs done there. It’s across from Thomas Square.

Somehow, you get the feeling that Rolo and his guys will find a good replacement for Rigo.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

I, like many, am still elated with the players who chose Hawaii.

FUP left Hawaii being rated as #1 guard and #1 center high school player in the USA by separate rating sources — his decision to return was heralded by many as the “corner/foundation and the next leader of the 2017” OL.

with the silence by ST, is it an indication that there is serious problem which cannot be addressed openly and he is NOT eligible to participate in sports at UH?

if so, when will Coach Rolo use the scholarship for another deserving player?

    thank you!

Oklahoma when the wind comes whistling thru the plains,

Windward nites when the wins come howling down the Koolaus and, it is howling now — very strong gusts which shake windows, slam doors shut — yet, the bright side, so far, is no rain

    OK, time to nap

Super Bowl LI, Brady and Belichick, greatest of all-time? Hard to argue against any of them.

To put this one in perspective, IIRC Fox coverage flashed a statistic that said teams leading by 19 or more points after three quarters were 63-0 in NFL playoff history. Well, it’s now 63-1.

    Guud Evening Tsaikos…Bootiful Evening!

Even more so if you like the Patriots. Anyhoo, no deflated footballs and no excuses.

Falcons snatched defeat from the jaws of victory..if I may. Great come bac, possibly the greatest.

Falcon D went to sleep and couldn’t wake up. They played great for 3 quarters then…

Hoping FUP is still on the team. He was to be the foundation for the O-line. We got a great bunch of kids for the O-line but…
No matter, Warriors march on…next man up!

JMHO that UH might consider Punahou PK ’17 Jeff Chan for a preferred walk-on spot in the Fall….

If I remember correctly, Spelman was a great punter too. I believe he hit a 70+ yarder once. For a guy who was not that tall, I think about 5’9″ and 170 lbs, he had a pretty strong leg and great form at times. Often, he would kick it just right with a perfect aerodynamic spiral that would arch up and over and come down still in a spiral which was hard to catch. When he hit those punts that turned over, they went pretty far (50 yards usually) and had good hang time. Still Jim Asmus was also an impressive punter, being so consistent and with good form and distance, guy was “cool as ice”. Showing my age!!

  17. burro sabio February 5, 2017 11:29 pm

Sorry but I don’t think you remember correctly. Spelman did not punt, at least not in a game.

  18. iceebear February 5, 2017 11:38 pm

Well, it was a guy like him, maybe after or further back then, will have to research it. All I know was that the guy was unassuming looking but could kick the hell out of the ball.

  19. iceebear February 5, 2017 11:57 pm

Got it, Johnny Masters, 1971-74. Surprising, he is only 20th per punt average, but when he hit it right just soared off the foot. He did have a 70 yard punt. Looks like Sanchez will be the career leader in punt average, better than even Elam. The guy who was really amazing was Morse,1922-25 (almost 42 yard average), which is mind-boggling in those days, unless there was some reason that kicks were not returned then and just left to roll?

  20. Duster February 6, 2017 12:48 am

I recall Spelman as a DB from Radford. Was surprised to see him kicking for UH. I seem to recall a 50 yarder he kicked that spiraled (versus end over end) through the uprights. Anyone recall that?
