Tavai named to All-MW first team
University of Hawaii linebacker Jahlani Tavai today was named to the All-Mountain West Conference first team.
In 13 games, Tavai, a second-year sophomore, amassed 118 tackles, an average of 9.1 per contest, and 7.0 sacks. In eight MW games, he had 85 tackles, an average of 10.6 per game, and 5.0 sacks.
Left tackle Dejon Allen, who moved from guard in spring training, was named to the second team.
Two omissions to the first two teams were kicker/punter Rigo Sanchez, who has converted all 12 field-goal attempts this season, and wideout Marcus Kemp, who 70 passes for 1,036 yards. On Sunday, Kemp won the Alec Waterhouse Award as the Rainbow Warriors’ most valuable player. Sanchez, Kemp, safety Trayvon Henderson, offensive lineman Leo Koloamatangi, defensive end Meffy Koloamatangi and cornerback Jalen Rogers received honorable mention.
Congrats to all the all-star selections. Well deserved!
WHOA! just shows how far we still are in gaining any respectability in the MWC. any one of those two, sanchez and kemp, and even Henderson deserved to be on at least first or second teams.
Rigo not even second team? How can?
So use this to play with a chip on your shoulder
and give 150% in the bowl game and your NFL
hopes…and whatever you do in life.
Congratulations to All-MWC selectees.
neighborhood news …
San Jose State: SJSU has “reached out to” former Fresno State head coach Pat Hill,
according to Pete Thamel of SI.
Rico is invited to a post Season all star game. That is more important.
Not too mention Leo k.
movin on up …
LSU: Dave Aranda’s new deal, agreed to yesterday as Ross Dellenger of the Advocate reported,
makes him the *** highest paid assistant coach*** in college football.
There was no ongoing negotiations, just waiting for lawyer’s review.
7. Seems like both of the coordinators (offense and defense ) that Chow fired when he took have done well. Their careers got a boost from parting ways with him it seems.
SJSU should be the first to offer Aranda a head coaching job. Pretty sure he would jump at the chance lead his own program even if it means a drop in pay. Tomey was saying the facilities are very competitive with even the power 5 programs on the west coast.
I maybe wrong but I don’t believed they were fired. Each new incoming head coach can retain and renew the contracts of former assistants or they can choose to not do so and bring in his own assistants.
A bunch of coaches who have left and gone on from coach Mac’s group have done well. I saw, where one from Chow’ s staff has also done well.
It was good for folks to move on. I don’t know if their fortunes in life would have fared as well if they were offered and stayed. Money, chemistry and opportunity has a way of altering one’s trajectory. Great news on Aranda. I wonder if he’d be considered for a head coaching job in the future? One thing for sure, I will be a big contact if it happens.
I seriously don’t think Aranda would even take a sniff at the SJSU position.
His next move would be as a head coach in an elite program.
Salary wise the Spartans paid their HC 550k this year. Aranda was paid 1.3m this year and will exceed 1.6m in this go around.
Way to go boys! Congrats!
Latest ESPN bowl projections has UH playing Middle Tennessee in the Hawaii Bowl. What do y’all think?
on another board, someone suggested UCF, with McKenzie(?) Milton.
I like this idea – hope ESPN can trade off.
This should pull in a few more fans.
10. Buffoman…. I think you are correct that the coordinators were not fired but simply not retained. I’m thinking that must feel like getting fired though even though it is technically not. In any case I guess I am still lamenting the chow years and many of the decisions he made that seemed to work out poorly for us and better for others. Perhaps it’s time to let it go and move on.
Right on Warriors! Yeah! If Hawaii plays Middle Tennessee in the Hawaii Bowl. If Middle Tennessee give 14 point. I will take Middle Tennessee. Because they’re aren’t like UMass and Fresno State. They’re four time better then them two teams. But it would be nice to University of Central Florida plays Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl!. What do you all think of that match off?
Great Afternoon All!
Congratulations to the MWC honorees! 🙂
Beeg Steenk I for the ones they missed. 🙁 👿
Yes, definitely, U of Central Florida would be a newsworthy game.
As for the BS bowl top 4 rankings—get rid of Ohio State and
Michigan, they did not EARN it…period. And put Western
Michigan in place of Ohio State. And lower Wisconsin and
Penn State and bring up someone from the East Coast and
the West Coast.
We going bowling.
Way to go team.
Way to go coaches.
Da drought is over.
Win! Win! Win!
#14 agree. Like you I am a long, long time fan of this program. Those tough unproductive years in the past have been tough. Moving forward is usually our best path. Let’s support the team and like what another thoughtful fan said, let the coaches coach and players play.
BTW, I enjoy your insightful comments.
Buffoman — I notice you have been blogging with us since 2007. Please send me an email (stevem.hnl at gmail) if you would like a Tsai-ko gravatar.
Same for ai-eee-soos. 🙂

My way or No Way Huh??
your statement: “obviously you don’t know a thing about football””
idk if this is directed at me or not. if it is, idk why you’re so upset. I didn’t say you didn’t know anything about football. I’m saying that what you’re trying to talk about is very technical and would require breaking down film and understanding the offense that UH runs. So that’s what I asked you. and if you don’t do that, then i have no idea what the basis of your argument is, which is why I’m asking you what it is.
Hawaii Bowl … I would prefer Hawaii vs Army if they qualify. Yes we play them at Aloha Stadium in ’17 and @ West Point in ’18 (someone correct me if I’m wrong). Jeff Monken was a GA in ’89-’90 under “Wags” and “Hilo Boy”, former UH player, and Waipahu HS HC Sean Saturnio is an assistant not to mention the Army presence in Hawaii will help boost attendance.
From my recollection on what Rolo said on his radio show tonight: They’re bringing in 10 prospects this weekend, including a couple from Hawaii high schools and a couple JC mid-year transfer types. They hope to sign a JC cornerback, and want to add some heft on the DL. Also, all the assistant coaches are off-island recruiting. Rolo made a couple in-home visits (today?).
Meanwhile, congrats to Brother Mike, who is now a published author. Big Bro must be proud.
Saw on ESPN this afternoon, LSU has made an offer to Tua Tagovailoa. Maybe LSU is also trying to get Lane Kiffin to be the new offensive coordinator and offer big bucks, just like Dave Aranda.
On the other hand, the Oregon job is now open. Would they get Scott Frost to come back from Central Florida, or would Phil Knight go after a big name coach. Money is no object with the Ducks. Urban Meyer could get $10 million per year at Oregon if Phil Knight want to sign him. Heck, why stop there. Go after Nick Saban too. All this is very interesting. But make no mistake, the Ducks will be back near the top very soon as long as they get some defensive help.
That’s what Hawaii needs desperately, defensive help. Good luck coach(es)!
Yup, got plenty rumors about LSU being interested in Lame Kiffen.
In fact, wasn’t he the one who came to Honolulu to scout Tua?
An offer from Bama followed shortly.
Verrry interesting.
808, it’s @ West Point ’18, @ Aloha Stadium ’19, @ West Point ’22 and @ Aloha Stadium in ’24. Army would be a good choice, but they most likely won’t be coming for the Hawaii Bowl. The Hawaii Bowl has agreements with C-USA and MWC to send their representatives. So if its C-USA, the possible schools are Southern Mississippi and the University of Texas-San Antonio. Anyway, that’s the way I see it.
Can you ask Rolovich to ask Aloha Stadium to show replays using the entire jumbotron instead of only half of it. I know that would increase fan experience for me and the people I sit by.
I miss the joy of gathering with friends to T-Gate, the walk to the stadium, the adrenaline and endorphine rush of the game, the walk back across the highway and the game analysis and hot soup to celebrate or commiserate the game….
Those of you who are able to attend games in person, please remember those of us who are not and show up at Aloha Stadium on Saturday to cheer for our team. Cheer for them and cheer for us… the ones who are yelling at our radio apps with Bobby and Johnny.
Go, Rainbow Warriors!
