No stopping for wind, rain

While UMass has mixed business and pleasure during this stop of a 10-day trip — several of the Minutemen rented mopeds the past two days — the Warriors were all serious during today’s 2-hour practice.

In the rain.

And in strong wind.

The reward is the Warriors will get to sleep in a little bit tomorrow. Practice will start an hour later than usual.

Question: Is UH’s special teams ever going to return a punt?

Answer: “The main job for the punt-return team is to possess the football,” said Mayur Chaudhari, the special teams coordinator. “That’s what we want to do. If the people want us to win football games, then we’ve got to possess the football first. And if there’s an opportunity to return the ball, we’ll return it.”

Question: Is there something special you’d like us fans to do during the last game to help pump up the players?

Answer: Rolovich said a tentative plan next year is to teach part of the ha‘a to the fans. “They can join in that way,” Rolovich said, adding, “the positive support is always appreciated.”

Question: Why doesn’t UH call more special plays?

Answer: “We threw an interception on the last one,” Rolovich said, referring to wideout Keelan Ewaliko’s option pass.

Question: What is UH’s pitch to a highly recruited players?

Answer: “Everyone is very unique in their recruitment,” Rolovich said. “You can’t have one pitch.”

Rolovich said the worldliness a mainland prospect gains by coming to Hawaii “is something you can’t duplicate, I believe, anyplace else in the world.”

Rolovich said local prospects also can experience being away from home in Manoa. He noted that players from Mililani and Kahuku, for example, “get to go home, but they (also) spend most of their time here.”

Rolovich added: “I think there are a lot of people who surround our local recruits and tell them to go away. We have to keep showing them they can get what they want from UH, and (also) a great degree.”

Question: Has local recruiting picked up with the team’s recent success?

Answer: “I think there’s an increasing positive feeling that comes when you talk about the local players,” said Rolovich, who plans to make several home visits on Oahu and the neighbor islands when recruiting restrictions are lifted soon.

Question: Does UH have a nutritional fuel station for its players?

Answer: No. Rolovich would like to see one implemented for all student-athletes.

Question: Trailing 10-7 on third-and-20 from midfield to start the fourth quarter, Dru Brown ran a quarterback draw that resulted in a 4-yard loss. The play selection seemed rather conservative. Was there a real expectation that a QB draw could result in a first down, or did down-and-distance dictate the call because you would likely punt on fourth down?

Answer: The Warriors were trying to get the first down with the quarterback draw against a prevent defense. “We had a good look,” Rolovich said. “We didn’t handle the twist very well. I don’t know if we would have gotten the first down, but (Brown) would have had a chance. We have to execute better.”

But Rolovich said there also were a “couple decisions made late in that game that were field-position based.”

Question: What is the status of wideout Devan Stubblefield and safety Daniel Lewis?

Answer: Stubblefield underwent knee surgery a few weeks ago. Because he already redshirted as freshman, Stubblefield, a second-year sophomore, will have to apply for a a sixth year after he completes his senior season in 2018. Lewis has been bothered by a hamstring injury all season. Lewis, a junior, has never redshirted. If he redshirts this season, Lewis would have two remaining years of eligibility.

Question: What is the status of class of 2016 signees Eugene “The Dream” Ford and Marcus Armstrong-Brown?

Answer: Both players have met NCAA requirements and will enroll at UH in January.

Question: Why does UH basketball coach Eran Ganot wear aloha shirts during games while the UH football coaches wear polo shirts?

Answer: After a long blank stare, Rolovich mused: “Basketball is a different attire. Some of those guys wear ties. Ask Eran why he doesn’t wear a tie.”

Question: Will Rolovich shave his mug come December?

Answer: “I don’t like shaving,” Rolovich said. “I don’t like wearing suits and I don’t like shaving.”

Players, too. Be like Sampson who had
super strength with long hair, too. So
tsaikoettes do not cut your hair.
    Yea coach!

Best of luck to our hard working Warriors this weekend. Would love to go to the Aloha Stadium to support our boys on Christmas Eve.

what are those bands that are worn on the forearms of some players and even some coaches like Lempa etc. what kind of info are on them and is it handwritten or computerized? Even Marcus Mariota wears it!

  7. kapakahi November 23, 2016 12:56 pm

Noticed that UMass played very competitively in their games against 3 SEC opponents (Florida, Mississippi State, South Carolina) this year…….

Hope that the Hawaii DBs are ready for UMass’ air-attack……over 35+ attempted passes a game.

  9. Arcumfortis November 23, 2016 3:35 pm

I think Saturday’s game will be a tough one. I hope we can pull it out and get a win. There is something about going to a bowl game that will most clearly mark a turn around for this program. It would be a very concrete indicator of a program heading in the right direction. This would be particularly useful as recruiting heats up and potential recruits are making the choices

    Great Afternoon All!

As the morning sports talk dude says, “Maitais and mopeds!” Perfect recipe for visiting team game prep.

    heheheh

  11. Arcumfortis November 23, 2016 3:49 pm

    10. Yeah I hope the opposition is pretty much on vacation.

  12. Ipu Man November 23, 2016 4:37 pm

Nasty wind today. Saw a telephone bent over like a pretzel
down a block or two mauka of Channel Two News. Gonna
affect kicking and passing if it doesn’t slow down…

  13. wafan November 23, 2016 4:41 pm

Folks need to let the UMass players know they will not need sunscreen because they cannot get sunburned when it is overcast.

    heheheh

    Guud Evening Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Went to the swap meet today and saw U Mass practicing. I don’t think they here on a vacation. They here early to get acclimated is my guess. So expect a dog fight this Saturday!
Expecting our Warriors to come out fired up, focused and ready to execute. If the box is loaded, then air attack. This one for the seniors. On the team or in the stands…hehehe.
    IMUA WARRIORS!

    NSF,
Mass played at BYU last week. No sense for them to go all the way back east to Mass and then turn around and come all the way back west for this game.

  16. Duster November 23, 2016 7:02 pm

UMass was only down 14-9 at halftime against BYU – although the TD was scored in one big chunk – a 70 yard pass play. Maybe the altitude bit them in the second half.

  17. al November 23, 2016 10:40 pm

    Happy thanksgiving to all.
    So much to be appreciated.
However big or small, I give thanks.

    Be safe.

  18. Ipu Man November 24, 2016 7:45 am

Wonder if Rolo will have thanksgiving turkey with his players?
“Honey, guess who is coming for dinner?”
    🙂

  19. Maddog50 November 24, 2016 8:58 am

As I have stated Warriors will be fully challenged by UMass. Despite the record they have played some good football. Against BYU they had a punt blocked and a muffed KO return that turned into easy scores. Interceptions also played a role in the final score. I just want a win no matter what-GoWarriors!!!!!

  20. A-House November 24, 2016 9:20 am

    al:

your tailgate in the same area? or, you no like me visit?

giving thanks is good, but I do not give thanks for everything — me not Christian.

for example, I do not give thanks for our President-elect for his multiple campaign statements and there will be some/many who will disagree with me, but that’s OK as this is a “public” forum for us to state our opinions

past has seen many different opinions/positions regarding 2016 UH football team and that’s, IMHO, OK — some we agree with and others we disagree, but does that give a “blogger” the right to make references to “a-hole” or “troll” or “thick head”? do we not honor the opinions of others; whether we agree or not?

or, are we those who believe “my way or the highway”? or, will be like Congress who eventually passed an amendment giving women the right to vote?

this thanksgiving and every day, should we be more tolerant of others who have a different opinion or should we be like those “white-persons” who truly believed in what the President-elect” said over and over again in his campaign speeches rekindling what happened days past?

yes, this is a forum for food, family, friends, and football, yet certain members of the International Olympic Committee have already stated that they will not vote for Los Angeles as the site for future games based on what our President-elect said while seeking the Presidency

    have a good day!

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL! Have a great day with family and friends…be careful not to get run over by shoppers! me and my mainland guest will just chill on the North Side….for now.

Thankful for this great country we live in. Contrary to some, this country has never been anything but GREAT!…and will always be, no matter whose steering the canoe!

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  22. A-House November 24, 2016 9:28 am

windy and rainy in the valley – slight chill in the air

weather forecast will be nearly same for game day — advantage or disadvantage? staying in the sun did not affect Boise State; it energized them!

  23. wafan November 24, 2016 9:29 am

Be thankful and enjoy the day. Yes! it is Thanksgiving. But, more importantly for some, it is Black Friday Eve.

    Kimpira!!!

  24. al November 24, 2016 10:39 am

    A house.

same place tailgate. Visit if you wish.

You don’t need to be a Christian to celebrate Thanksgiving. They even celebrate a similar holiday in Japan. I guess your family doesn’t celebrate Christmas?

I apologize if you took offense to my “thick skull” remark. It was done in jest, because you refuse to attempt to comprehend what others are trying to help you understand to no avail.

Your opihi-ness has been exasperating. I would say that it is “your way or the highway” in your relentless no way to “up the middle” that you cling to.

  25. winning November 24, 2016 11:21 am

Where is UMass staying? Call the hotel in question and give out complimentary Mai Tais and Blue Hawaii drinks in pitchers on the house at all hours of the day. Also, maybe spike the non-alcoholic ones too. Also give out free samples of poke of all types, poi, squid Luau, Lau Lau, lomi salmon, Haupia cakes and pudding, ice cream so forth and so on. show them the Aloha Spirit. Slow em down and let em enjoy all the fatty stuff! then on Saturday squish em! Lets go Warriors!! Heh Heh!
