Shoji on morning show, Kan to SandBows?

Shoji spoke on a variety of subjects, including retirement, the team and the NCAA selection.
Continues to say it will be “sooner rather than later” when retiring. Bobby asked him what he wanted to do after, Shoji said he wanted to continue to give back, maybe be a volunteer coach. Said wife Mary involved with a number of volunteer organizations and would like to do things with her on that front. Said he would travel to see the football team that son-in-law coaches. That would be South Carolina. Plus the two grand kids.

Said there could be an outside chance of hosting next week if the committee looks at some of the new guidelines that go beyond strictly using the RPI, such as last 10 matches (most of those sweeps by UH) and that they should understand UH’s injury situation earlier in the year.
Talk about potential hosts on the West coast: Stanford, UCLA, Washington, BYU but though San Diego losing to Pepperdine (good for UH RPI) could put them on the bubble (11) San Diego lost to Pepperdine 23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 22-25

But he admitted that the thinking of the committee is that it’s easier to fly Hawaii out than bring three teams here, even though they’d make money. Said he figures they’ll be on the West coast

As mentioned here yesterday, the practices are Tuesday (light, less than 2 hours, mostly skills), Wednesday (heavier, Taylor limited to back row attacks and team stuff) as well as getting the B Team more reps so that they’ll be game ready
Friday and Saturday mornings, more skills and getting B side into game mode.

Didn’t quite catch what he said about travel plan but it would be different depending if it’s West Coast or father east. Practice Monday

I’m sure others can fill in what I missed.

Soooooo … not to bury the lead but ‘-) From what I understand …
Missouri’s Carly Kan has been accepted to UH for spring semester and plans to play beach for the SandBows, this I believe as a grad student. Will have two years of eligibility. Wants to go to med school and follow in her dad’s footsteps.

question on previous thread about Pac Rim Beach this weekend. conflicting schedules out by UH and PacRim peeps. Official website is PacRimHi.com

Play at Queen’s Friday, UH on Saturday. Junior tournament at Queen’s both days.
Spoiler back to be part of Team USA in the international event.

And as mentioned, both Lipscomb’s Cathedral Catholic and Misraje’s Crossroads teams won their respective semifinals. advance to regional final. winner goes into the state championship match. Janelle Gong’s Campolindo team also won, same scenario as above.

  2. Ki November 23, 2016 10:20 am

Nice. What a boost for the Sandbows to have Karly on the team for 2 years.

  3. tako November 23, 2016 10:23 am

Hope I am not mistepping boundary, but unless, I misread the brackets for Janelle Gong’s Campolindo team, they lost 3-1.

wow, cool … Kan does get to be a Wahine after all … looking forward to welcoming her back home. i’m sure she’s looking forward to it too…

  6. Cubicle1126 November 23, 2016 11:23 am

that’s probably the most i’ve heard shoji talk about life when he retires in one sitting/conversation. … or maybe the questions on curran’s show focused on it more than in past interviews i’ve heard or read about …

that said, we all know that retirement is looming. and it’s a real possibility it could be after this season. if it is, here’s hoping the wahine can have a successful post-season run for him! … if not, coach shoji is gonna have his work cut out for him with a bit of rebuilding for next year …

  7. Cubicle1126 November 23, 2016 11:28 am

to add a little to what hollycow and maverick were saying on the prior thread — pepperdine’s win over san diego may really boost hawaii’s RPI. the poster on VT who does the RPI Futures threads mentioned that pepp’s win could move hawaii’s RPI up as high as #25 (previously, the forecast was that hawaii could get up to #27, just based on winning out in the regular season).

    http://volleytalk.proboards.com/post/1550308/thread

all of this makes you wonder what hawaii’s RPI could have been if they had been healthy at the start of the season, and pulled off some wins over wisconsin, kansas st, ucla, and/or washington. i would think that if hawaii had managed to win some or all of those matches, they’d be in the conversation for a seed right about now.

still, seed or no seed … i’m liking how this team is coming together as the tournament approaches! just hope for a good draw and continued quality play from the wahine!

  8. Maverick November 23, 2016 11:56 am

On hosting, the actual rules are not clear cut, as mentioned previously. What Shoji referred to in the new guidelines (i.e., last 10 games, injuries) relates to the selection of at-large participants for the tournament (see section 31.3.3.1 of http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2016DIWVB_PreChamp_Manual_20160914.pdf). Also, Shoji described the secondary criteria, or the least important considerations after taking into account W-L, SOS, RPI, significant wins and losses, head-to-head, etc.

Section 2.2 of the above linked document describes RPI and other evaluative tools available to the selection committee, including record in last 10 games, injuries, etc. These have been around for at least the last 2-3 years. Assuming this list of tools is used to seed the top 16, UH has no shot. UH will likely have a mid-to-high 20s RPI rank, no wins against top-25 RPI teams, no head-to-head advantages, and UH’s best win is against an Arizona team that is 4-6 in its last 10 matches. Also, when compared to other teams above UH in the RPI ranking hoping to host (i.e., Penn St., Kansas St., Utah, Oregon, Purdue, Texas A&M), UH does well in the W-L and last 10 games criteria, and largely because they play in the Big West. UH fares comparatively poorly in most of the other criteria. Big problem if you want to convince anyone you should host. The other teams in the top 30 RPI without a top-25 RPI win are Western KY, Creighton, Dayton and Boise St. It would have been nice if UH ended the season this week playing a top-25 RPI team so that it could get a win and show it is a different team. Would make the injury argument more convincing.

Not trying to be a party pooper, but I just don’t see hosting at all this year, not even an outside chance, and fully expect UH to go to the mainland for the tournament. I’d rather focus on a UH team that has momentum, has been playing very well in a more diversified offense, and is peaking at the right time. Pity this year’s Texas A&M, the seed who will fall in to UH the second round.

  9. Maverick November 23, 2016 12:00 pm

    7. Rough calculation indicates a 25-2 UH team with losses to Wisconsin and UCLA would have an adjusted RPI rank of around 14. There would be some bonus points too for beating UW and KSU, but those might be offset by UH’s opponents’ SOS impacts that I cannot calculate without a computer. So 14 is a decent estimate.

  10. tongo November 23, 2016 12:03 pm

Yeah, it’s kind of fun following all the bracket speculations on Volleytalk Proboard. At the end of day, the only thing that counts is that the wahines are peaking at the right time. Dave and staff will have the team ready.

Hopefully this road-seasoned team maintains their health and do not get sick in postseason – especially remember Angelica Lundquist getting bad cold prior to the finals and had a really bad match in that national championship match against Stanford.

Something wrong with that link, but if you hit the search button it will take you to it.

  13. Eric96822 November 23, 2016 1:27 pm

I want Shoji to retire only after he regains the most wins position with both he and Russ Rose retiring so that it won’t be passed again anytime soon, if at all. Sorry, my being stingy just came out.

  14. LanaiBoy November 23, 2016 2:16 pm

Just Curious. Does Carly Kan have any experience in playing beach volleyball? Does it make a difference if she doesn’t? Can an outstanding indoor volleyball player adjust quickly to this different sport? The Hawaii team already has 21 players. One more player?

  15. tongo November 23, 2016 2:19 pm

Thanks for the link. Those two announcers had so many nice things to say about Carly throughout that match – and deservedly so as she had a double double.

  16. Andrew November 23, 2016 2:30 pm

    13.

Rose is younger than Shoji even though he looks older. I don’t see that happening

  17. noblesol November 23, 2016 5:07 pm

Arizona (RPI 30) with a 3-1 win over Utah (RPI 20) tonight. Provides a little more help for UH’s RPI.

  18. noblesol November 23, 2016 5:13 pm

Correction, Arizona with a 31 RPI as of 21 Nov.

  19. noblesol November 23, 2016 5:27 pm

I like Shoji’s focus on getting the B team ready this week, and then using them to get the A team ready. From what I’m seeing in some of the matches playing out this week, it’s critical when the A side is struggling that there are bench players ready to come in and make an impact and gain back momentum, and create energy on the court and the sidelines when the starters are struggling or in a bad rotation.

  20. jon-e November 23, 2016 5:41 pm

It would be hard to see the Wahine name without Shoji attached to it (for obvious reasons). Whether it’s this year or next – he’ll be deserving of his retirement no matter what. Always hoping that this year’s team will be able to hang up the championship banner and let him go out in style.

  21. Maverick November 23, 2016 5:47 pm

Estimated unadjusted RPI for AZ is 34 after tonite’s big win, 25 after quality win bonuses are factored in. UH still in 27th place, a whisker out of 26.

  22. Maverick November 23, 2016 6:53 pm

Big win by Minnesota over Nebraska. Huskers could have swept but let the Gophers back into the match. Several Mitchem and Taylor-type players across both teams. Very physical teams. But I believe UH can play with both. IMO, UH is far superior from the service line than both teams.

  25. Not an Expert November 23, 2016 8:42 pm

Having injuries early in the season better than late in the season. Draw back is the best teams UH plays are early in the season. Positive is the building of the team and allowing other players to show their abilities, gaining valuable experience.

Wahine, fine tune your game, eat well, rest up the bodies and be healthy. Practice good hygiene so that you don’t get the flu or cold. This is it, going to battle and there is no option except winning the national title. You the Wahine are on a special mission.

  26. Cindy Luis November 23, 2016 8:46 pm

    3. misread the bracket.
No. 6 CAmpolindo lost to No. 2 St. Ignatius 3-2

  27. Cindy Luis November 23, 2016 8:53 pm

    14. they can carry as many players as they want. Had 17 last year 18 before Manu-Olevao decided to concentrate on finishing her degree.
Kan’s an outstanding volleyball player. I’m sure she’s played some on the beach growing up.

  28. Cindy Luis November 23, 2016 8:56 pm

    9. agree that it’s a stretch that UH would host. surprised Shoji said it only because he’s been pretty consistent saying they’ll be on a plane.

  29. Warriorfan November 23, 2016 9:28 pm

Great pick up for the beach team. Kan was better at beach back in high school than Nikki and Hannah Rooks were and we all know how good those two are.

I could see Kan partnering with Maglio or Rooks, maybe Nikki if she plays.

  30. warriorfan November 24, 2016 1:23 am

UW winning the pac 12 means wahine probably won’t get sent there. good news for them as I think UH would beat them.

  31. warriorfan November 24, 2016 3:19 am

Hoping Annie plays for the beach team in the Spring. She was on IVC’s top flight team partnered with a player that is now at Grand Canyon.
I could see her being an excellent blocker and attacker partnered with someone like Ari Homayun or Kaiwi Schucht who are great defenders.

  32. Ron November 24, 2016 6:22 am

Happy Thanksgiving every one. So much interesting information comes in from Cindy and you bloggers, I feel like a member of an exclusive high brow book club!

  33. noblesol November 24, 2016 6:32 am

BWC play wrapped up last night with a UCI win@UCSB, 3-0. (UCSB senior night)
    Attendance: 211
    http://stats.bigwest.org/sports/wvball/2016-17/boxscores/20161123_7v5y.xml
Not a good night for Ruddins. UCSB losing both their starting middles. Welch’s program treading water, maybe sinking. Not far to go to join Riverside near the bottom, maybe already looking up at them (UCR did beat UCSB twice this year).

  34. tongo November 24, 2016 9:51 am

Actually, I like the Gauchos so I am going to say it is not that bad. They remind me so much of the wahine teams of old – mostly undersized players that can be characterized as having lots of fight and play a great scrappy defense. Yeah, both MHs graduate but they get back a good setter and a great libero. Their two undersized hitters in Hoffman and Rice have really live arms and are fun to watch. And then there is their one “tall” superstar in Ruddins who will be the premier OH in the BG. This is a fun team to watch and the closest thing to old wahine volleyball.

  35. darkfire35 November 24, 2016 9:53 am

    32. Well said Ron, I concur. Cindy keeps a tight ship and the analysis is top notch, bar none.

    33. So sad for the seniors @ UCSB. At least our 7,000+ attendees at SSC sent them off well. Even a 1,000 people in the SSC is like no one showed up. I watched the Pacific game with UH and while they were introducing the players of Pacific I noticed some of the girls had that deer in the headlights look on their face as they were scanning the enormity of the fans and the SSC. I’m guessing very intimidating for them.

Can’t wait till Sunday! GO BOWS!

  36. Not an Expert November 24, 2016 10:20 am

Did UH make an effort to recruit Ruddins?

UCSB playing in Hawaii and going back to the west coast to play. Not an easy task after playing in the Sheriff during senior night.

  37. mark November 24, 2016 4:07 pm

Hi Cindy. I read your blog all the time but first time to leave a comment. I really appreciate all that you do for uh and local vb. Anyway, will there be a write up in paper for Nikki & Annie, or did I miss it? Only saw for Ponce & Tayler. Aloha and Happy Holidays!

  38. darkfire35 November 24, 2016 5:35 pm

I’m asking this question out of curiosity and ignorance. What/how determines what conference we play in? Why can’t we play in PAC-12? How did we get out of WAC? Is it per the coach or AD or both? Mahalo! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! And may God Bless you all!

  39. darkfire35 November 24, 2016 5:42 pm

Hi Cindy, another question out of curiosity. I’m sure that the girls that sign NLIs/walk-ons are aware that Dave will be retiring soon. It just seems funny that most of the time, their comments about choosing UH is because of 2 things: The successful program/fans and Dave. Although, recently, they’ve mentioned the successful sand volleyball program as well. Any comments from the girls about Dave retiring soon?

  40. Bleachercoach November 24, 2016 7:29 pm

36….what’s funny is I even yelled to Ruddins to transfer to Hawaii next year at the last match. (lol) Gosh she is a good one!
On another note; I really have a SUPER GREAT FEELING about our team this year …I also predicted an easy 3-0 SWEEP of LBSU last match….I am no prophet but if I get this one right, I might start to qualify as one (lol)

  41. Eric96822 November 24, 2016 7:51 pm

Any update on the the injury Natasha Burns sustained?

16 – yes, I know Russ Rose is younger than Dave Shoji. So what? Shoji looks and is probably much fitter. I know he runs and surfs and is in great shape. I dunno what Russ Rose does but fitter people have better outcomes as far as longevity is concerned. So…. I DO see it happening. There.

  42. tipshot November 25, 2016 1:17 am

Apparently the NCAA is getting input from the Regional Advisory Committees before making the brackets this weekend. There are two BW coaches (Crosson and Welch) on the committee in Hawaii’s region so hopefully they are saying good things about the Wahine. I’m hoping we get a favorable match up like last year where even though we were not seeded, anyone with volleyball knowledge knew that Hawaii was the best team in that subregional.

  43. Maverick November 25, 2016 7:19 am

7,9. I asked John McGinn, who created his own RPI estimator, to run a scenario assuming UH was 25-2 with losses to Wisconsin and UCLA. The result is that UH’s adjusted RPI rank, which includes good win bonuses over UW and KSU, would be 10.

His model can be found here (the tab that includes experimental bonuses equates to what the NCAA reports each week–UH is currently estimated to be 28th):
    http://ncaastats.figstats.net/volleyball-rpi.cgi

  44. tongo November 25, 2016 8:17 am

Wow, that is super impressive – if only. Thanks for researching and sharing. Wahines are going to have to do it the old fashion way – earn it one at at time.

  45. Cubicle1126 November 25, 2016 10:07 am

i hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! 🙂

  46. Cubicle1126 November 25, 2016 10:19 am

thanks maverick — that’s interesting/great info (the RPI scenario if hawaii had won a couple more of its non-conference matches). damn, i would have loved to see a healthy hawaii team from the start this season. this definitely was an RPI favorable schedule.

it just goes to show that hawaii being seeded in the post season is still not out of the question. hawaii fans can still have hope! haha… of course, the stars still need to align a little… the right non-conference schedule, players healthy, and the big west teams have to do just enough to not drag hawaii’s schedule down. for the most part, 2 of those 3 factors were present this year. unfortunately, we faced some health issues at the start.

it’s nice to see what could have been in terms of the RPI and hawaii’s chances at a seed. but i’m glad to see this team healthier. a deep postseason run is still in the cards, and that’s all that matters now…

  47. Cubicle1126 November 25, 2016 10:41 am

darkfire — there are probably a lot of factors that determine what conference hawaii plays in … like, what the the athletic administration wishes to pursue, location/travel, costs, and even what conferences would even extend an invite to hawaii.

primarily though, i would say football is the biggest driver, and to a lesser extent, basketball … that’s because those are the sports that dictate revenue on many levels … through attendance, and most importantly, television contracts with the big cable sports networks, like espn, fox and cbs. some conferences have even launched their own channels, like the pac-12, big-10 and sec.

hawaii got out of the WAC a few years ago, essentially because it was crumbling. a few members fled the conference. hawaii followed suit, because there was a question whether the WAC would be left with enough members for automatic NCAA qualification. at the time, other larger conferences had started to re-align, and it caused a domino effect, causing schools in other conference to move. it just so happened the Mountain West was open to taking the football team, and the Big West was open to taking all of hawaii’s sports teams. and that’s the present alignment … i may have missed some details, so i’m sure others can chime in…

  48. Row13 November 25, 2016 10:56 am

The Power 5 conferences want to expand to areas with large television markets, to increase advertising revenue and eyeballs for their TV networks. That’s why the Big Ten added Rutgers (N.Y. metro area) and Maryland (D.C.), and the Pac-12 added Utah (Salt Lake City) and Colorado (Denver). Honolulu is the nation’s 72nd-larget television market, behind Green Bay-Appleton and Des Moines-Ames. So that, and the fact that adding Hawaii would inflate travel costs and provide no logical scheduling partner, is why the Pac-12 would probably not expand to Hawaii.

  49. darkfire35 November 25, 2016 12:02 pm

Much Mahalos cubicle & 13. Nothing in the NCAA is ever simple is it? LOL!

  50. Eric96822 November 25, 2016 7:29 pm

I believe this near healthy Hawai`i team is one that none of the top-10 teams want to face in their first round, or any round for that matter. They lost to Wisconsin in 4 without Nikki and Annie, lost to Washington in 5 without Annie, and beating Arizona, who has beaten every Pac-12 team except Washington and Colorado, without Nikki and Annie. The team has shown recently that their level of play is vastly improved and have settled into a consistent lineup with is key for moving into the playoffs. The team has displayed great blocking, serving and passing. They have the hitters so let’s get the party started. No matter who we play, we can win.

  51. Warriorfan November 25, 2016 7:52 pm

Did anyone go to see the beach team this afternoon? Sounds like they have some solid players in Martin, Tucker, Ozee, Rooks and Homayun (plus shucht who didnt play today) once you add the indoor players like Maglio, smith, taylor, and transfer Kan UH will have a rock solid 5 pairs IMO.

  52. Cindy Luis November 26, 2016 11:35 am

couple of things before moving to new thread.
Mark, Taylor’s story runs Sunday. Mitchem’s will run next week. I will call you about that.

IF committee does Top 4 seeds based on this week’s RPI, the top regional sites (baring upsets) will be Nebraska, Texas, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Not Washington
There will be 16 subregional sites with the top four remaining seeds from each region hosting the regionals.
as mentioned previously top 16 coming into this week
Wisconsin, Texas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Florida, Kansas, Missouri, BYU, Stanford, North Carolina, Washington, UCLA, San Diego, Michigan State, Western Kentucky, Kentucky.
we’ll see how much the new ‘advisory’ to the committee takes place.

Conference affiliation: Hawaii left the WAC, placed it’s women’s and most men’s teams in the Big West. Football to the Mountain West. some to the MPSF.
Hawaii has long wanted to be in the Pac-10/12. there were serious discussions when Stan Sheriff was alive. If the Pac-12 expands again to 16, they likely pick from the Mountain West.

The WAC was rapidly disintegrating. Too bad since Commissioner Benson almost had some of the old WAC members on the verge of coming back, think it was UTEP that spilled the beans and the Moutnain West made a big move to solidify its membership.

Burns … I mentioned earlier in the week that Burns was fine. knee taped. told Taylor they were ‘twins’ now with the bandages. although Taylor wears a brace most days and Burns still refuses to wear knee pads.

Players have not said anything about Shoji retiring. Incoming recruits, which included this class, all understood that he might be at UH for their entire careers.

    new thread up
