    From the Big West
Taylor Notches 10th Career Player of the Week Honor
For the second straight week, Hawai‘i senior Nikki Taylor (Honolulu, Hawai‘i/Kaiser HS) captured Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week accolades as her performances helped her team clinch its second straight conference title.
The 6-4 opposite earned her fourth weekly honor this season, and 10th of her career, placing her second all-time in Big West history. She only trails Cal Poly’s Kylie Atherstone (11) on the career POW list.

Taylor’s all-around contributions lifted UH to victories over Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara as she averaged 5.29 kills, 2.57 digs, 1.14 service aces and 0.57 blocks per set. She also hit .333 with a team-leading 37 kills and just 12 errors in 75 swings. Taylor’s eight service aces and 47.5 points also topped the squad.

In the sweep of the Mustangs, Taylor collected a match-high 15 kills, seven digs, five aces and four blocks as head coach Dave Shoji compiled career win 1,200. Three of her five aces were registered during a seven-point serving run that propelled the Rainbow Wahine to a 25-15 win in set 3.

On Senior Night against the Gauchos, Taylor pounded a match-high 22 kills to go along with 11 digs, securing her sixth double-double this season. Nine of her kills came in set three when she hit .571 with just one error in the frame. Her 22-kill effort marked the seventh time this season she has exceeded the 20-kill plateau. She swung at a .405 clip (22-5-42) for the match and her three aces gave her a Big West-leading 51 for the season.
osia Directs Hawai‘i To Big West Championship

Setter Norene Iosia (Torrance, Calif./Redondo Union HS) helped Hawai‘i capture its second straight conference championship and earned her third Big West Women’s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week award.

Averaging 10.57 assists and 3.57 digs per set, Iosia continued her outstanding play as UH upended Cal Poly in three sets and UC Santa Barbara in four sets.

She recorded her 11th and 12th double-doubles of the season, and totaled 74 assists in the two wins. She is now just two assists shy of reaching 900 for the season.
Iosia had 34 assists and 10 digs against the Mustangs. She contributed three blocks, including two of the solo variety. Against the Gauchos, Iosia dished out 40 assists with a team-high 15 digs. She directed the UH offense to .315 hitting – the 11th time this season that the team hit over .300.
DPOW goes to Harward of the Beach, averaged 6.17 digs per set.

Cindy, you mentioned at the end of the last thread that you wouldn’t be surprised if UH was sent to Missouri, or Creighton. What makes you say that, out of curiosity? I have no idea how the committee comes up with some of its decisions, particularly when sending UH somewhere other than the West.

  9. Cindy Luis November 21, 2016 12:12 pm

it was just in response to someone else suggesting the Hawaii would go to the midwest. My dream the other night had UH going to Maine.
No longer surprised about where UH gets sent.

  10. setaone November 21, 2016 1:29 pm

Ryan Tsuji said (and it totally makes sense), that he feels the NCAA fills Hawaii in the bracket where there is a hole. It doesn’t matter to them if they send Hawaii to the West or the East or somewhere between.

btw, did the Big West make the “announcement” that was teased at the end of last week?

  11. Ki November 21, 2016 2:48 pm

    10. If it means Hawaii is going to the NCAA Tournament, that’s all that matters. Stick us where-ever (last year’s seeding was perfect for us). In order to be the best, you gotta beat the best.

  12. Maverick November 21, 2016 3:10 pm

I know UH has been sent as far away as Nebraska and Texas, and maybe Minneapolis. Don’t recall ever going east. Prefer not to play the best until the later rounds. The best would agree.

  13. Rabbit ears November 21, 2016 3:12 pm

    No Burns update yet?

  14. Cindy Luis November 21, 2016 3:32 pm

    12. if we’re discussing the first-second rounds, never went to Nebraska or Minneapolis.
01 Pullman, WA. 02 Honolulu. 03 Honolulu. 04. Ft. Collins, CO. 05 Austin. 06 Long Beach (when Hawaii was hosting regional). 07. Louisville. 08 LA. 09 LA. 10. Seattle. 11 Honolulu. 12 seattle 13 Honolulu. 14. Seattle. 15. Texas A&M
    13. they were off Sunday and today.
From what I saw of Burns after senior night, she was walking just fine.

  15. Maverick November 21, 2016 4:33 pm

    14. Thx for the data. Louisville 2007 was the year UH lost to Middle Tennessee. UH has mostly been out west or Texas.

At this point, I hope there is no announcement regarding BG. I can’t be the only one feeling fatigued over this. Maybe I am, lol. Assuming he behaves, I’d prefer to let the season just end for the rest of the Big West and have the conference focus on UH’s tourney run.

  16. Cindy Luis November 21, 2016 5:10 pm

    15. Perhaps the conference changed its mind on making an announcement. Just passed along what I was told last week during practice.

Only time we were in Minneapolis was for the 88 final four.
07 MTSU was a weird match. UH was very flat.

  17. Maverick November 21, 2016 5:24 pm

    9. Regarding Maine, it would be the farthest possible destination for UH to be sent. However, there is only one Div. I school in the state, the Univ. of Maine, and they don’t have a women’s volleyball program. Were Na Wahine eating lobster rolls in your dream? Maybe you want a lobster roll. ‘-)

  18. Maverick November 21, 2016 5:28 pm

    16. How times have changed since 2007. MTSU is 5-24 in Conference USA and has an RPI rank of 278.

  19. Cindy Luis November 21, 2016 6:05 pm

    17. maybe. lobster always sounds good.

  20. WaWa November 21, 2016 6:31 pm

Who could forget that 207 season? The year they lost to Ah Hoy’s Oregon State team & Ale’s Utah State team. On paper they had the talent, but they had little to no chemistry. Houston’s attitude clashing with Cubi-Otineru’s arrival. The constantly rotating lib spot. I think it started off w/Woolford (yikes), then Ka’aihue (who was not in the best shape), might’ve ended with Hittle IIRC since there was enough firepower at the pins. Then there was Sanders’ visible displeasure with the connection between her and Mafua.

I remember UH fans were all upset (including myself) that the NCAA 1st/2nd rounds out at Louisville would not be televised. Dave’s response to that was for us to just listen to listen to the game on the radio and be happy with that. I remember telling a friend, “he probably knows that with this year’s chemistry issues that they will probably lose anyway so he’s not fussing about it.” Obviously that was just my take on the season.

  21. Rabbit ears November 21, 2016 6:50 pm

    Can hardly remember last week!

  22. T103 November 21, 2016 7:07 pm

So regular season is finished, or is there still games left to play in the season? Wen is selection sunday ( I think thats what it’s called?) Congrats to Noreen & Nikki!

  23. Cindy Luis November 21, 2016 8:41 pm

20.TV out of Shoji’s control. what else was he to say?
07 last year sets were played to 30. included a money game at Nebraska.
    22. regular season is over for Hawaii. other teams still playing. Selection Sunday this Sunday, Nov. 27. 4 p.m. HST

  24. Andy November 21, 2016 8:45 pm

Anyone remember last year’s pre-tournament RPI and AVCA rankings for the Wahine?

  25. Cindy Luis November 21, 2016 8:50 pm

    24. the week leading up to the selection show, Hawaii was No. 8 in the poll, 26 RPI

  26. Maverick November 21, 2016 9:42 pm

If UH had 3 fewer losses (say wins against Kansas State, Washington and LBSU), its RPI rank would be around 15 or better with bonuses, and the team could have been in a good position to host. So the non-conference schedule was strong enough this year to offset Big West weakness, as opposed to 2015. But Cindy probably wouldn’t have dreams of UH going to Maine for the subregional this year.

  27. Hot November 22, 2016 12:24 am

    20. I never realized Houston had an attitude.

Jayme Lee, the incumbent libero, started the first few matches in 2007 before being replaced by Ka’aihue, who was destined to be the libero, anyway. Woolford played very little in 2007, and IIRC, never put on the libero jersey that year. She did start the season opener in 2006 as the libero before being replaced by Lee.

Hittle wasn’t the starting libero until 2008, when BOTH Lee and Ka’aihue had health/injury issues. She was a starting pin hitter in 2007.

Good thing Mafua only started the season opener in 2007, if Sanders indeed was visibly displeased with their lack of connection.

  28. connor November 22, 2016 7:23 am

Definitely leave Annie at LS1. need shock and awe (mitchem maglio taylor) in front row at the same time. gamble that shorter front on rotation (granato bush iosia) can keep even.
