  1. Cindy Luis November 19, 2016 6:48 pm

UCSB will be without Chanel Hoffman (lower leg, out of the year) and Rowan Ennis, not cleared, ankle.
However Lindsey Ruddins, who was out the last time the Gauchos played the Wahine, is back. UCSB is coming off a 3-2 loss vs. UC Riverside.

  2. Gossip Queen November 19, 2016 6:49 pm

  8. Cindy Luis November 19, 2016 7:27 pm

UCSB closes to 18-16. TO UH. of note, Taylor now with 50 aces this season, Maglio with 400 kills for her career.

  9. T103 November 19, 2016 7:27 pm

UCSB’S passing has been really on point so far and Hawaii’s has been jus alright, credit UCSB for putting the ball where ever hawaii isn’t. Feel
Like we haven’t been able to run our fast offense as in previous matches.

  10. z November 19, 2016 7:28 pm

They are out hitting us and out digging us. Wahine need to turn up the energy.

  11. Cindy Luis November 19, 2016 7:33 pm

ace by Ruddins gives UCSB the lead at 21=20. TO UH.
the previous play, it did look like Ruddins was over on the 3-meter but not called.

  12. HawaiiMongoose November 19, 2016 7:36 pm

Annie is still being cautious with her swing on out of system plays. She needs to unload.

  13. Willie November 19, 2016 7:37 pm

Is there a player designated to watch/cover the dinks and roll shots? Achilles heel for the Wahine for at least the last 5 seasons.

  14. Cindy Luis November 19, 2016 7:38 pm

Ruddins with the kill, UCSB ends it 25-21. snaps UH’s consecutive set streak at 25.
Wahine very flat tonight. they flipped the lineup again. not a good rotation.

  15. z November 19, 2016 7:39 pm

Wahine need to start talking to each other. They are too quiet right now. UCSB prepared well for this game. Wahine need to adjust.

  16. T103 November 19, 2016 7:40 pm

Wait they switched up the lineup to begin tonite or they switched it to start 2nd set ?

  17. z November 19, 2016 7:47 pm

    Finally a block.

  18. HawaiiMongoose November 19, 2016 7:47 pm

  25. z November 19, 2016 8:16 pm

They are dinking Iosea forcing someone else to set.

  26. z November 19, 2016 8:18 pm

Wayne always seem to call touch.

  27. Cindy Luis November 19, 2016 8:18 pm

UCSB challenging whether there was a touch. didn’t think so but what do I know. UCSB up 3-2 with the serve.

  28. Cindy Luis November 19, 2016 8:22 pm

think Burns is hurt. landed awkwardly. Castillo in. it’s 7-7

  32. Cindy Luis November 19, 2016 8:33 pm

    30. she did and sitting at the end of the bench.

  33. HawaiiMongoose November 19, 2016 8:34 pm

  34. Cindy Luis November 19, 2016 8:40 pm

Higgins in to serve and set at 23-16.

  35. Cindy Luis November 19, 2016 8:41 pm

Taylor with her 16th kill. UH wins 25-18.

  36. Andy November 19, 2016 8:46 pm

If Burns doesn’t make it and Casey starts, who’s the backup MH? Kendra?

  37. Willie November 19, 2016 8:51 pm

Middle attack not showing up so far

  38. HawaiiMongoose November 19, 2016 8:53 pm

Would like to see Maglio get a few more sets, although with Nikki playing so well I can understand why Iosia keeps going to her.

  39. Willie November 19, 2016 8:54 pm

Granato having a good match hitting and serving

  40. z November 19, 2016 8:54 pm

Wouldn’t be surprised if they go with Annie.

  41. Cindy Luis November 19, 2016 8:57 pm

sorry we keep losing the wireless. UH up 14-5. TO UCSB

    UH wins 25-10.

  42. Cindy Luis November 19, 2016 10:18 pm

very sorry about that. with so many in the arena, think there was an overload on the wireless.
Great hula by the Wahine, dancing to Weldon Kekauoha’s Lei Ho’oheno. I had seen Mitchem practicing it before some of the practices. Her dad couldn’t believe she wore socks when she was dancing.

  44. Warriorfan November 19, 2016 10:27 pm

Loved the video by Norene I hope that is a new tradition.
I think that first set loss was a blessing in disguise. I hope Natasha will be okay, she was having a nice match before she got hurt.

  45. tongo November 19, 2016 10:38 pm

Very nice Hula by the entire team – wow! Lindsey Ruddins was as billed and will rain holy terror for next 3 yrs. Great come back with beat down in set 3. Thank you seniors, you are among the finest in the wahine tradition.

Hope Natasha is okay – she is such an important part of the post season run. Higgins needs to show Iosia how to set Maglio. Smith needs to understand that Kahakai is going to take the second ball so Emily needs to call for it – otherwise there is going to be another collision.

  46. Warriorfan November 19, 2016 10:42 pm

Iosia has been setting Maglio just fine Maglio has been on a tear and shown she is clearly the best middle in the conference.

  47. Maverick November 19, 2016 10:43 pm

Shaney Lipscomb and Arden Misraje’s respective teams advanced to the regional semifinals of the the CA state volleyball championships. Div II and III, respectively. Good night all around.

  49. Warriorfan November 19, 2016 10:53 pm

Now hoping Nikki is the Big West POY Norene the FOY
Shoji COY and first team honors for Nikki ,Norene, Emily, Annie and Savannah.

And hope for a favorable draw in the tournament and that we avoid being put in Nebraskas side of the bracket or the bracket of death that we always seem to end up in.

  50. Warriorfan November 19, 2016 11:07 pm

    47. Janelle’s Gong’s team is also still alive in the open division.

  51. Andy November 19, 2016 11:16 pm

    44. Agree that the 1st set seemed to sharpen their focus, just like the loss to LBSU did. Need that little nudge going into the tournament.

The way the competition forced the Wahine to up their game underscores the disadvantage of playing in a non-P5 conference. Imagine where the team would be if pushed to the limit week in and week out.

  52. Maverick November 20, 2016 12:11 am

Think Nikki gets POY or shares it with Nele Barber. Like Norene but think Ruddins gets FOY. Voters love offense. COY is probably Shoji, but wouldn’t be surprised if Nicole Welch of UCSB got it. Last year, UCSB was 3-13, 7-20. This year, 8-7, 17-11. Despite the injuries.

  53. warriorfan November 20, 2016 1:20 am

Olivia was so great again , hope to see her as an announcer sometime, and working for espn.

  54. hossana November 20, 2016 8:03 am

irt MAVERICK: I agree with you on the COY but I don’t see why Shoji can’t be Coach of the Year as his team was beset w/injuries early on in the season and he had to constantly shuffle his line-up and yet, they were able to take UCLA/WISCONSIN to 5 games or one of them to five games and they also beat Arizona with a makeshift lineup, also….All that notwithstanding, Shoji also coached this team to win the Big West conference title outright which wasn’t easy this year with all the lineup changes and injuries…I think, as big a critic as I have been of Shoji these past few years, I think Shoji did his best coaching this year which I really admired…..

  55. Maverick November 20, 2016 8:53 am

hoss, my point was that UCSB had a 5 match conference improvement and 10 march overall improvement even with injuries. UH returned most players from a deep elite 8 team and was supposed to win the conference. UCSB was predicted to come in sixth and are now fourth. They did more with less. So Welch did a great job IMO. Just saying if Shoji doesn’t get it then don’t be surprised if she does. She turned that team around this year.

  56. Willie November 20, 2016 10:13 am

Chicken skin moment with the Wahine doing the hula last night!

If Burns knee is bad, think they leave Annie on the outside as she takes a bunch of heat off of Nikki. Pins attack just more diverse. There is 2 weeks to prepare, if Castillo’s leg improved coaches can get her up to speed. She is more athletic and powerful than Burns in the middle, she just needs more time to get ready IMO.

  57. Connor November 20, 2016 11:21 am

Convince Ruddins to transfer to UH. She is terrific.

  58. tongo November 20, 2016 11:46 am

While Ruddins is one big talent, she may have to carry an even larger load for the Gauchos next year. Both starting Gauchos MHs are graduating. The other big Gaucho OH in Chanel Hoffman just suffered her second consecutive season ending leg injury. Also, Ruddins has had ankle/leg issues that sidelined her last season and she suffered another leg injury the early part of this season. Will be interesting to see if Ruddins can sustain it.

  59. Warriorfan November 20, 2016 11:53 am

We don’t need Ruddins lets get 6’4 ut player Yaazie Bedhart-Ghani instead.
No scholarships for UH to give out though lol

  60. islandman November 20, 2016 12:47 pm

One of the TV commentators said that Berg is on a one year contract, which was mentioned on this blog before. He said that if Dave comes back for next season, he would have to find a new assistant.

  61. Maverick November 20, 2016 1:03 pm

    60. I believe all the assistants are on one year contracts that can be renewed. What the commentator said was more pointed, that she was gone after this year. Who knows if that is true.

  62. Maverick November 20, 2016 1:18 pm

Current unofficial RPI rank for UH is 28 after last night’s match. Hopefully this gets a UH a decent bracket position. San Diego would be a great place to go.

  63. tongo November 20, 2016 1:50 pm

Just watched Missouri beat Florida in five. Punahou’s Carly Khan led the Tigers in kills. Just amazing how Kan at 5’9″ was hitting around Florida big front block that included 6’4″ Rhamat Alhassan. It was so impressive as Carly was not powering it through but was seeing the block and placing it through very smartly. Florida Coach Mary Wise cross the net after the match to give Carly a hug.

  64. Ron November 20, 2016 1:58 pm

It would seem that if our RPI comes out to under 32 we should receive a second cede wherever we are sent and would play a third cede team first. Since I am mathematically challenged and don’t understand all of the subtitles of the RBI, I would like to know what Maverick or anyone else thinks. Also, I thought last nights outpouring of love for the seniors was tremendous. I also liked the way Olivia handled her TV assignment. This was not really one of our better games and we took apart a very decent team anyway. Cindy, you looked very nice on TV. Very colorful!

  65. LanaiBoy November 20, 2016 2:16 pm

As I mentioned before, this season there is the possibility of having three local-born Hawaii players make the College Women’s volleyball All-American teams (1st to third). Nikki Taylor is of course a shoo-in. Kalei Mau of Arizona and Carly Kan of Missouri are iffy, though both will easily make the all-regional teams. However, being on national television and having a sensational match against Florida sure has improved Kan’s chances. The announcers sure were complimentary of her play.

  66. tongo November 20, 2016 2:17 pm

If I understand it right, since the top four seeds will get the chance to host, if they want to, UH will have to play on one of these top seeds’ home court in the 4th-5th round. It’s a daunting task but doable -with a little bit of luck in the draw.

  67. warriorfan November 20, 2016 2:30 pm

    65. not sure why you continue to leave off Adora Anae who has better numbers than Kan and Mau.

  68. warriorfan November 20, 2016 2:31 pm

    66. If the top four seeds advance. I would prefer to be put in Kansas’s bracket, as they top player is injured.

  69. Maverick November 20, 2016 2:31 pm

Ron, I don’t think UH will face a seeded team in the first round. UH would have to be one of the 16 worst tourney teams, or close to it, for that to happen. I am thinking UH goes to San Diego, although UCLA, Stanford and Washington are possibilities. Closest geographic proximity is my reason, and hoping the committee wants to prevent UH from replaying Wash/UCLA in the subregional, even though that isn’t a consideration. IMO, UH can beat all four away.

  70. Maverick November 20, 2016 2:33 pm

    66. Unless there is a monumental upset in the subregional…

  71. warriorfan November 20, 2016 2:33 pm

Wouldn’t be shocked if they send the wahine to the midwest again, maybe SEC champs Missouri? or to Western Kentucky ( if they get a seed)

  72. tongo November 20, 2016 2:34 pm

Yeah, the SEC TV announcers were super flattering of Kan – like in every play she touched, they had something nice to say about her. And to be sure, Carly was amazing with a double double.

Who would have ever guess that a 5’9″ local girl would become a Mizzou volleyball superstar 3,979 miles away in the land of Gateway Arch, Budweiser, Branson, and the Royals?

  73. LanaiBoy November 20, 2016 2:41 pm

re: 67. You’re right. I just watched Utah play the other night and Adora Anae had an outstanding match. Just overlooked her and I shouldn’t have. Hawaii should be even more proud of having four possible All-Americans in one season.

  74. Maverick November 20, 2016 2:54 pm

    71. Interesting idea, although I’m not sure why they got a favorable bracket last year, aside from the signature Florida win and one-loss record. Worse resume this year. If, and a big if, the committee follows the AVCA poll, they may decide the disparity between the poll and RPI is too great to ignore and may give a favorable bracket again. If they recognize the injury issues, then maybe. If they see this is a very different team than two months ago, then yes… Or not.

  75. Warriorfan November 20, 2016 5:08 pm

Actually now that i think about don’t want wahine to get western kentucky/ kentucky or missouri they all might be the 16th seed which means top seeded Nebraska in lincoln for sweet sixteen.

  76. blunite November 20, 2016 6:13 pm

    72. Tongo – RE: Carly Kan

In Kan’s senior year I spoke with one of the Kamehameha coaches who said she was the smartest OH he had ever seen. Said despite her height she consistently out-smarted their double block.

I told him that she was too short to play at UH but he told me he would offer her; because even if she doesn’t pan out at OH she is excellent in the back row.

So I watched her in the State Championship and was shocked at how good this girl was. My only doubts concerned her stamina to go 5 sets in college (high schools rarely go 5). My guess is she did not impress at the club level, flying under the radar.

  77. tongo November 20, 2016 6:39 pm

Thanks for sharing. Here is story from Missouri site on their 5 set win over Florida.

“COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 25 Mizzou Volleyball (23-5, 14-2 SEC) moved back atop the Southeastern Conference standings on Sunday with a thrilling 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 21-25, 15-10) victory over No. 5 Florida. Overall, Mizzou tallied 71 kills on .331 hitting, led by senior Carly Kan’s (Honolulu) sensational individual match. Kan finished with a season high 25 kills on .328 hitting and season high 21 digs. Her outstanding effort marked the Tigers’ second 20 kills-20 digs match this season..”

  78. Bleachercoach November 20, 2016 6:49 pm

I noticed Hawaii tweaked their lineup this match from their IMO best lineup started back from last LBS home match.
Instead of having Annie start….they had Granato at LS and Emma Smith starting at backrow….I still rather Coach start Annie at LS with Greenly in the backcourt and when Greenly rotates to front bring Granato in for Greenly….We can always use Emma to rotate in to give Mitchem a breather….I love Hawaii with the “Trees of Forest” to start the match especially in postseason…Just my observation !

  79. chink November 20, 2016 8:03 pm

    It’s Greeley. Not Greenly.

  80. warriorfan November 20, 2016 8:18 pm

    76. I guess 5’9 aint soo bad afterall huh??
Oglivie has just as much skills as Kan and is actually more impressive at her age than Kan was in HS.

  81. Ron November 20, 2016 9:00 pm

Bleachercoach, I noticed the same thing and started yelling at the TV until my wife and granddaughter told me I was making too much noise. The wife added that we had a perfectly good coach and “You aren’t him!”. The change still annoyed me because it seemed to put Granato on the floor more and take time away from Greeley who has really stepped up in the passing department.
