Warriors hit the road again

After a condensed 90-minute practice this morning, the Warriors were set to depart this afternoon for their sixth road trip of the season.

The Warriors’ offense was able to get work against both the scouts and the second-team defense. Because of travel limitations the Warriors will be without most of their scouts during tomorrow’s walk-through session.

For the third consecutive week, the Warriors did not stage a Warrior Rumble for developing players and redshirts. The support staff — trainers and equipment managers — needed to prepare for the trip.

Don’Yeh Patterson, who is not on the travel roster, continues to develop in his transition to defensive back. He moved from wideout more than two weeks ago. Patterson still catches passes from the JUGS machine after every practice.

“the Warriors were set to depart this afternoon”

    Were set or are set?

  3. H-Man November 3, 2016 11:16 am

Don’Yeh transitioning to corner or safety? Hoping the Warriors put it all together this week to bring home a win. I am thinking they will also have to open up the passing game. The weapons are there. Go Warriors !!!

    one way to stop Humphrey:
    Stop his blockers from blocking…

Safe travels, Warriors! Bring down the Aztecs’ house and bring home that “W”.
It’s great to enter into this game and truly feel like we have a chance. I believe. I have faith in the Warriors and their coaches.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    5. Agree it is their oline that we need to worry about. And don’t forget Penny.

  8. clyde November 3, 2016 12:28 pm

    7. And don’t forget their defense, which has allowed a total of 26 points in four conference games. I think the Warriors face a more daunting task winning at SDSU than beating Boise State here.

  9. Losing? November 3, 2016 12:52 pm

Right on #5. Hit their O-Line in the mouth early on and rotate our O-Line often. Might soften them up enough. In another vein, just up the athletic fee already! To reiterate last year, ‘if they dont like it they can go to another school. Raise em up to $150. Nobody seems to complain when the city upped our vehicle registration FEE! I mean its ridiculous-Colorado’s vehicle tax is about $75/year and my 3600 lb. car is $298??? Whaaat! daa Faaat!

    SDSU:

running plays are up-da-middle or around the corners?

me tinks the “corners” – let down DL plug the middle, rush ends must contain and not be fooled by dive plays — safeties must be ever watchful of offensive “tendencies” for fakes and passes — passes to the side or middle?

safeties – use your intuition wisely to commit to the run or pass – cheat to either side if you must to contain RB speed!!

and, for heavens sake – play your responsibility!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lempa has to develop a strategy to contain, but mix-up coverage to fool offense and no prevent defense with NO down linemen – gottsah pressure QB

  11. cocobean November 3, 2016 1:46 pm

SDSU is a well balanced team on both sides of the ball. Against SJU and Fresno they had an easy time stopping the run and was able to pressure the QBs with a four man rush. Their defense really plays fast and every one rallies to the ball. I think Lakalaka may have more success running out of our base look than St. Juste or Harris at least early on.

  12. Former UH Athlete November 3, 2016 1:59 pm

UH must stack the box and just clog every gap it can vs SDSU. The best chance UH has is to get the offense rolling and jump on SDSU early and try to make SDSU play from behind and pass the ball. SDSU’s QB isn’t that good, but with Pumphrey, he doesn’t have to be good, just not turn the ball over.

That being said, it’s going to be a serious challenge to stop Pumphrey, who’s by far the best offensive weapon in the MWC complemented with a physical OLine that takes pride in blasting MWC defenses that stack the box. To be honest, they haven’t played a good defensive team yet, but nevertheless, SDSU just keeps truckin’ through.

  13. z November 3, 2016 2:39 pm

They also move Pumphrey to the outside and throw him the ball.

  14. cocobean November 3, 2016 3:58 pm

Pumphrey has great vision, balance, can stop on a dime and change direction in an instant. For called plays between the tackles he hits holes quickly or bounces it outside looking to turn the corner or to a find a cut back lane. He does not go down unless you wrap him up. He has a knack for breaking free if you hit him and not have both arms with a firm grip on him. He’s not the only talented back they have.

  15. clyde November 3, 2016 5:03 pm

Pumphrey has quick and active feet, but what I like about him is — at 5-9, 180 — he finishes runs, knocking back a DB for an extra yard or two. He’s gonna be a handful to contain.

  16. cocobean November 3, 2016 5:19 pm

Our offensive line has got to play their best game to date. It won’t matter if the game plan is to run to establish the pass or the other away around. Either way they O line has to block. I have a feeling Rolo plans to throw a lot more than in previous games. If that’s the case priority one for the line is to keep Brown upright in the pocket.

  17. paki park November 3, 2016 5:31 pm

Best way to stop Pumphrey is to keep him off the field. Or the UofHawaii offense goes crazy and scores a bunch of points. Either way, UofHawaii cannot afford to have their defense out on the field too long. Ball control, ball security on offense
will help keep UofHawaii’s defense fresh. Go ‘Bows.

  18. iceebear November 3, 2016 5:43 pm

Pumphrey has the same instant and phenomenal acceleration of Faulk past the line of scrimmage, so if there is even a slight hole, he is through it before anyone can take a proper angle to make a tackle or lay a hand on him. Then, he is at the second level and look out! Yes, he is tough to bring down for a smaller guy, but his “bread and butter” is that he is so elusive.

Hawaii will have to score from the “get go” and often to keep up. As another poster said, they need to have the urgency to score from the start and not flail around during the first few drives or it is over. The offense needs to get together before the start of the game and commit to each other to come out like “gangbusters”!!

As long as our offensive playcallers are creative in their play calling and actually do their jobs instead of pleasuring themselves in the booth, UH should have a chance to win.

  22. oneseason November 3, 2016 8:54 pm

Considering last year’s teams, the UH win over AF seems much less likely to me than an upset on Saturday. Last year, UH lost 28 -14 to SDSU. SDSU has a new soph. QB who was 4 for 9 against Utah State in a 40 – 13 win for SDSU. Last year, SDSU beat Utah State 48 – 14. And against UNLV, Fresno St, San Jose St, and Utah St combined, in 2016 SDSU has scored 125 versus 26 for their opponents. The total was 151 versus 42 for last year against the same teams. Considering UH’s improved offense this year, and this being best chance for a bowl bid, a UH win seems reasonable to hope for. While the 45 – 40 SDSU win against Cal was a huge change from their 7 – 35 loss last year, hopefully they invested a lot of time into planning for that game and conference play is a better metric for their status.

Shoko what kind of crap is that?

  24. Paniolo November 4, 2016 4:31 am

Those so-called winnable games (UNLV AND NEW MEXICO) our Warrior defense let the game get away early resulting in our Offense trying to catch up. Unfortunately late game fumbles cost the two losses.
Against San Diego State, you can’t make that same mistake.
Everyone thinks San Diego State is a gurantee lost. Keep in mind, our Warriors played the best and lost, California, Michigan (3rd in the nation) and Arizona (yes , Arizona). To me, San Diego is just a notch or two below those teams. That’s why I really believe our Warriors will upset the Aztecs on their turn on Saturday.

  25. cappie the dog November 4, 2016 5:34 am

Police Pumphrey and sting the Aztecs.

Ewaliko is the ghost in the machine.

A SDSU loss would really irritate Craig Thompson.

That would be part of my motivation speech if I was the head coach. The conference wants Hawaii to help the marquee teams get into better bowl games.

  26. Maddog50 November 4, 2016 6:20 am

Only way they compete in this one is to come out and smack them in the month from the start on both sides of the ball period…….then continue to smack them. They are down 12 or 13 players due to injury or suspension and have not skipped a beat. Against South Alabama they looked very average when the Jaguars stuffed the run and they were “forced” to pass. If you let them get going our only hope is outscore them. Let’s just do it this time-complete game all phases all 4 quarters!!!! GoWarriors!!!!!!
