just realized that my post never made it.

focus continues to be on serve-receive They are concerned about left-hander Kekauoha.

Great news for all of us on the mainland. The best WVB broadcast is back online.
Starting tonight:
Sibley/Greeley, Iosia, Kahakai. Taylor MBs are Mitchem and Maglio, LS Granato
Sounds like Granato will serve and then Smith will replace her as DS
On The Farm

Make that 2-1. Stanford takes Set 3 27-25.

For me it is a lose-lose situation. I live in Hawaii but on the Big Island and I can’t get cable where I live. So I am totally locked out of live streaming TV broadcasts altogether. Darn it!!!
2 aces by Granato, Maglio with the service overpass and it’s 7-3 UH. TO UCI
8. very sad for you. Had asked UH about that and they said nothing they could do for those without cable. sorry.
I hope Kendra plays front row setter. We need her offensive output.
As mentioned that it would happen, Smith in for Granato in back row.
11. Higgins will be the second setter if they go 6-2. Koelsch will be used as a blocking sub.
Great dig by Mitchem. UH wins the rally. another block and UH up 16-9. TO UCI
Did Kahakai actually get a kill?!
USC beat Oregon 3-1
Taylor now 13 all-time. 1233. at 20-12.
15. yes, service overpass landed on the other side.
Arizona over Stanford 3-1
Sibley ends it 25-14
10. Thanks for your commiseration. I can only hope that in the future UH Athletic Department will switch TV carrier though it’s hardly likely. Either I move or I quit being a UH fan altogether and find a mainland team to support.
21. Not ideal, but you can wait a couple of days for the youtube replay posting. Other than that, I empathize with your situation.
21. there’s always radio
UH up 11-5. TO UCI. Looks like they’ll have plenty of time to catch their red eye at 1130
i didnt know/recall kahakai had a fever during the beach match. was that part why she wasnt rock solid as usual?
Wish one of y’all at the game would hold up a big ‘#6’ sign for my fave Natasha – sorta hard to do from here in Orlando! It’s 1:40AM here, I’m goin back to bed! Mahalo,y’all!! Mike
22-23: I am listening to the audio but I can hardly focus. I just want to cry. I am just too upset right now. I’m not sure that there will be YouTube upload as most people now can watch the match. I feel like I am the only exception singled out for monumental frustration. How I wish I could watch the Long Beach match live on Nov. 4th. I feel like Oceanic Sports just doesn’t care for exceptional cases.
Shoji should have challenged Iosia’s served Did look in.
UCI Irvine challenging a down ball. UH up 14-10 at the moment
Challenge upheld. replay at 14-10.
25 Mentioned Kahakai was ill starting last week. played with a fever at the Beach.
UCI Has pulled to 17-15. TO UH
Irvine challenging the touch where it looked like Taylor hit long. If it is overruled, UCI would take the lead at 18-17
There was a touch. UH up 18-17
Granato with her third ace and it’s 22-19. TO UCI
#28, on TV it looked in. No comment from the commentators.
#4 looks great in the back row, layout and all.
Who would be the outside sub option for #3? She’s not having a good night so far hitting, but is serving well.
Greeley is staying in the front row this rotation. She looked to be about 85 percent in practice this week.
27. There will be a video upload in a couple of days. The person doing it has done so over the past few years (home matches only).
34. other option is Castillo.
great digs by Anderson
Sibley ends it 25-21.
28. agreed he should of challenged that ace by iosia. looked like he thought about it and hesitated. smh
I wonder if we will see Castillo on the left. Combined, the left side is hitting .143, including .000 from Granato. Mitchem only has 9 attempts to this point, hitting .444. If I were the opposing coach, I’d focus on shutting down Taylor and forcing the left to hit well.
Interestingly, the only real change I saw after Shoji’s claim that all positions were up for grabs was subbing out Granato from the back row. I guess Castillo didn’t do enough to force a change at the left, or in the middle (with Annie going left). I think this indicates this is the starting lineup is pretty much set.
Burns in to start Set 3
39. don’t see the lineup set at all.
Mitchem in on the left for Sibley
Granato struggle but Dave pulls sibley?
41,42. I hope Mitchem is a serious option at left, she has had good success there and is a viable terminator. She’s too good offensively to be left in the middle while the left struggles. Ok, nuff said.
43. there’s more than just subbing one hitter for another. blocking scheme comes into play. anyway, Mitchem with the kill. it’s 15-14 at the TTO.
Koelsch for Iosia.
Granato with a kill. it’s 17-14.
45. Agree, but Brandon has a point when the player is hitting .000 after 19 attempts in two sets. At some point, the offense production has to mean something.
Granato with the kill. it’s 22-19. TO UCI
Tip tip tip…
still an issue with serve-receive. UCI closes to 23-22. TO UH
Very sloppy match…disappointing…
He has a point but there’s also sub pattern to consider. UH about out of subs I think.
going to Taylor way too much. UCI up 25-24. TO UH
This Hawaii team is so up and down… Frustrating!!!
52. think some of the sloppiness is due to all the subbing.
Shoji should have challenged. that looked in by Mitchem. UCI wins 26-24
TBH I see more flaws being exposed again. Don’t know what the deal is, but it’s frustrating. Hawaii, hit hit hit and Irvine tip tip tip. bad part is that Irvines tips are all falling and Hawaii’s hits aren’t.
I don’t think he should have subbed so much seeing as how UCI was gaining momentum…very poor choices tonight…
59 and people would have complained when he didn’t play other people.
Gave up a 6-1 run. SMH.
wahine need practice besides remind the dink/tip but practice at crunch time.
60. That’s very true. There is no pleasing the posters here.
three straight blocks and UH up 8-4.
It was 10-4. now 10-8 as Kekauoha holds serve.
If we want to see Mitchem on the left — and I’m one of those who feels we need her out there — we’re going to have to accept her growing pains. She had several opportunities to put the ball down late in set 3 and wasn’t able to do so. Nonetheless I think she has the potential to be much more effective at the pin than Granato.
Iosia an impressive 6-0-6
UH up 17-13. TO UCI.
Personally, I think Mitchem is better in the middle
Not sure if this was discussed, I apologize if it has.
But, I was just looking up the tie breaker if two teams are tied at the end of the conference season. It says that the first tie breaker is the games results vs the team right under them. So in this case, that’s cal poly right now. LBSU wins that tie breaker as of right now.
So, its not a who has the better “games” record between the two tied teams, as others have mentioned it to be.
Maybe I’m wrong, but that is how I read and interpretated the rules. I could be wrong.
57. shoji hesitated again.
67. ah yes.
wahine need not fall asleep.
Hawaii needs to start stopping the slide attack in their opponents. Akpakpa is having a field day on the slide.
66. You’re getting growing pains with Granato and Sibley. Granato is barely a .200 hitter and Sibley is a sub-.200 freshman hitter. Mitchem has hit around .250 when placed on the outside. Yes, she needs to learn the position, but if UH doesn’t put her out there more often now, she will be that much farther behind during the tournament.
So happy to hear the Oceanic streaming to the Mainland is back in place. Cindy, do you know if that’s for all UH sports or for Wahine VB only?
68. Agree that Mitchem is a better middle than outside, but for me, the real question is whether the team is better with her in the middle or on the outside. If the left side is producing .225+ and the passing allows for more sets to the middle, then Mitchem should stay in the middle. If not, Mitchem is far more productive on the outside for the team. Neither the left nor the passing is happening right now, so that’s why I’m big on Mitchem being on the left.
Granato ends it 25-18.
Big Island VB Fan…..can you subscribe to Oceanic on a real basic package, maybe $30 a month and then just use that to stream UH sports?
74. My thoughts exactly.
Big Island VB Fan….or get the login from a family member or friend?
Since I can’t watch, which Hawaii player made player of the night according to the TV station?
Very ragged tonight, most of that due to all the subs.
Mitchem said she prefers the middle but likes being OH because she gets to pass. Said that when the passing isn’t there, it’s hard to run the middles.
As we all know.
Was surprised that Castillo didn’t play.
Shoji said Mitchem has the skills to help at both positions. and that Burns is coming along.
They have practice at 10 a.m. I’ll check in after that Saturday
Second that, a big surprise that Casey did not play. Did she miss practice or something? Nice to see Kalei play some front row hope she is getting close to full speed. She was getting reamed by coach in the first set for something. Seems like they are used to it already.
Disappointing win. More precisely, I’m glad they won but I’m disappointed with how they played. I was hoping to see more improvement. I think most of us have given up on the Wahine’s passing. Moving Mitchem to the outside so she gets more sets is a work-around not a fix.
Mahalo to our Wahines for another win. Keep working hard and good things will happen. I’m not disappointed with the Wahines but I am disappointed in the direction of our federal government in the past two decades and this presidential election but that is another thing for another blog.
I like Annie in the middle but she has shown that she can hit anywhere. I was surprised how Dave subbed tonight. I thought that it was a pretty close match. The way they were digging Nikki I figured that we would have had to find other options. I think that they can still have Annie in the middle but move a long the net more. I like that play they ran where she hit between Noreen and Nikki. I don’t remember seeing that one before.
Their libero was fun to watch tonight. She was a big reason we struggled to put the ball down.
60. It’s always good to see the reserves play. All that subbing, though, but no Castillo? And Granato wasn’t the one subbed out?
I liked that Shoji used Smith, Anderson and Guinasso to pass for Granato.
I’ve been on the fence on where I’d like to see Annie play. I think the team play is a lot smoother when she is in the middle in the Wahine’s “standard” setup. The combination of All America OP, All Conference MHs, and tough serving is probably enough to beat LBS at home and win the Big West. But the very average passing and LOH play combined with a likely low seeding might mean an early exit against a strong opponent in the Regionals.
Burns has surprised me by showing, at least as it appears on TV, some inner fire the last few games. At this point I think I would roll the dice and commit to Annie outside. Have two weeks before LBS to hope that both Annie can learn OH and either Castillo or Burns can step up at MH. Two big “ifs”, but the one that might have more upside for an NCAA run.
. . . cause I feel you’re going to go down early, you might as well go down swinging (pun intended).
#86 I figured it out. Granato is Shoji’s niece. That’s why she plays in spite of what we see with our eyes!!!!
I thought each DS played really well and proved the point that Granto should not be receiving serve. I also kept wondering when they were going to put in Casey. She is a much better all-around option than Granato IMO. I think that Dave is over-relying on the return of Greeley to the front court. I am still up in the air as to where to play Annie but the numbers provided by M sway me to have her play LS with Casey in the middle, not Burns, even though I love the progress she has made.
Agree it was a disappointing win but a win is a win. The way they played the third set, unable to close, is becoming a characteristic displayed against all the ranked opponents they faced and LBS this season. This does not bode well IF they make it to post season.
11. Iosia had 6 kills in 6 attacks, there is your offensive output. Granato had 3 aces. Nikki was held out of practice for 2 days this past week, per TV commentator. I like Burns too.
The pre-game TV show had a piece on Annie and, as probably mentioned before, she wanted to play for Hawaii since she was in 9th grade. But she didn’t qualify academically and when she went to JC, she kind of fooled around her first year. Then Tom and others helped her out and she was able to turn it around but then she needed one more class -Algebra, which she got done late. Then she had the injuries, but is back strong. Good to see her serving and to see the two consecutive solo blocks in the 4th set.

Thanks for the info on the streaming, I am an OC subscriber. The football folks on the mainland want to know if there will be streaming for football ?
Choice of players is secondary at this point. If the goal is to win a national championship, this style of play is insufficient.
The top teams hit over .300. While UH struggles with slow high ball sets against mediocre opposition.
The quick sets vs Wisconsin showed the potential of a faster system of play. (Without NT, AM, KG). Of course, the first contact must improve.
I agree that we are seeing a lot of unrealized potential when Mitchem is just locked in MH position. Nevertheless, I believe Annie should be in the middle because she can be effective at MH even against the top teams in post season (if we get there) – neither Castillo or Burns are at the same level. Staff appears to be developing ways to get the ball more to Annie when she is upfront. And perhaps similar to how Stanford and Long Beach have used their MHs to hit at the pins, there will be designated moments when Annie switches to hit at the pin. Good grief, we have Tom to show us how to best use Annie as he did so successfully at Irvine Valley.
94. Agree that UH needs to hit more efficiently, but not all the top teams hit over .300. Only 8 division I teams hit .300+, including CSU, Wichita State and Western KY. Top ranked teams that don’t include Wisconsin, San Diego, Washington, Kansas, UNC, Stanford, BYU, etc. Hitting pct. is impacted by quality of the competition. Also, last year’s team hit .286 and made the elite 8. But .255 won’t cut it this year, especially with a relatively unchallenging conference.
The evolving backcourt led to several lapses in defense that were not unexpected. Nevertheless, it was so “not” Wahine Volleyball. Like to see the substitution of a DS for Granato in backcourt a permanent one as wahines need to start solidifying backcourt players for post season. McKenna needs backcourt reps to grow but that development needs to be set aside for next season. Dave’s post match comment gives hope that Greeley may come back to front row duties in couple weeks. We are desperately needing Kalei.
what happened to the 6-2. Need to get Higgins and Kendra in the mix.
Here is what I saw – lack of enthusiasm, energy, lack of focus and reaction to the ball seem a half step slow. Are they having fun? Do they even want to go to the postseason tournament?
Here is what I’m seeing with the top teams in the country – they are improving every week and most of these teams are showing why they belong in the final four.
Here is what I see with the other teams in the Big West – they are also improving every week. It’s likely there will be more parity in this league in the coming years.
Team is underachieving. With the tremendous knowledge and experience in the coaching staff, you would think they would have things figured out by now.
some good observations, some borderline nuts.
They will make the postseason.
Granato is not Shoji’s niece.
Annie didn’t fool around her first year at IVC. They held her out to concentrate on academics.
I mentioned they MIGHT look at a 6-2. They used Koelsch as more of a blocking sub.
Castillo has been bothered with a leg problem that I didn’t realize was as bad as it was She likely won’t play Sunday.
