UH football: Wednesday’s answers

For weeks, folks have been asking why there’s no live streaming of UH football games on the mainland. Ferd Lewis has a story on why: Live streaming story
(By the way, I guess there’s a little irony that you need access to the Star-Advertiser site to read about why there’s no access to live streaming of UH football games.)

Here are this week’s answers to your questions:

Question: Where does Coach Nick Rolovich envision his program being in three years?
Answer: “Third year?” Rolovich said. “I want to be a championship football team this year. I want to be a Mountain West champion. These kids have given a lot to our staff and each other. I don’t want to talk about three years. … If they had lost the game (to San Jose State), it would be, ‘Oh, you have one loss. You need the other people (to help).’ Right now, they just need to win one game at a time. Look, crazier things have happened on this island. The mana is strong.”

Q: How do the coaches determine each running back’s playing time?
A: Rolovich said a running back’s usage is “situational and play specific.” Rolovich said Diocemy Saint Juste, Steven Lakalaka and Paul Harris are capable of being used for every play, but one might be a better fit than the others for certain situations. “They all have a different skill set,” Rolovich said. “Game situations are part of it.”

Q: Will the Rainbow Warriors walk down tailgate lane on the South side to enter Aloha Stadium?
A: Rolovich said he prefers entering from the North end zone, where the buses carrying the team reverse down the tunnel leading to the field. The Warriors then walk the length of the field to their locker room on the South side. “The symbolism there, to me, is like you’re loading the gun, putting the bullet in the chamber (by) backing in the buses,” Rolovich said. “I always loved it.”

Q: Is there such a thing as a good penalty?
A: “Here’s a good one: Last play of the game, six seconds left, we’re running a play that we call ‘First Aid,’ and one of the offensive linemen gets beat,” Rolovich said. “It’s good for him to take a holding penalty instead of letting the quarterback get hit. It’s the end of the game, so we can line up and do it again. That’s a good penalty. Sometimes a delay of game on a punt when you’re at midfield can be a good penalty. Sometimes an accidental false start when the clock’s running and you’re up, you get to move the ball back, but you take another 35 seconds off the clock, can be a good penalty.”
He also said a penalty for an accidental face mask “happens, it’s not good, but it’s better than a celebration penalty.” He said an “effort” penalty, like holding, needs to be cleaned up. “There are only a few situations where a penalty is good,” Rolovich said.

Q: Will UH ask the Mountain West to review the excessive celebration penalties incurred in the San Jose State game?
A: No. Rules are rules. “You can’t dance after you score,” Rolovich said. “And you can’t interact with fans in the stands. That’s in the rule book.”

Q: What was wideout Ammon Barker’s celebration dance?
A: It was a dance Barker created during early-morning pass-catching workouts with former UH receivers Duke Bukoski and Ryan Pasoquen. Music played during those workout sessions.

Q: Will wideout/returner Keelan Ewaliko be used on defense?
A: “No,” Rolovich said. “It’s the middle of the season. He’s doing good at receiver. He’s taking care of his ball-security issues. And he’s getting better every day on offense. No.”

Q: Have the Warriors made offers to prospects in American Samoa and Australia?
A: Yes. Rolovich declined to reveal the number of offers.

Q: What’s the biggest challenge in recruiting players from Australia?
A: A major obstacle is how the NCAA interprets an Australian prospect’s transcripts and graduation dates.

Q: Does Rolovich ever reach out to June Jones for advice?
A: “I texted with June at 4 in the morning (on Wednesday),” Rolovich said. “He was up. It was 4:06 in the morning.”

Q: What is the relationship between the Aloha Stadium Authority and UH? Does UH have any say in marketing?
A: Athletic director David Matlin said he and his staff “work with Aloha Stadium on an on-going basis to have a better atmosphere and environment for our fans.”

Q: Can UH ask the business school/marketing to conduct a marketing research study to determine which market(s) pose the best/greatest potential to increase attendance at Warriors football games?
A: “We need to do more of that,” Matlin said. “That’s something, when I first got here, we did. I talked to some people up there. I think we need to re-look at that, especially in how to reach out to millennials and different groups. We need some advice and counseling and expertise in that area. I think a lot of times there are a lot of great resources on campus.”

Q: What are the plans for Saturday’s homecoming game?
A: “It’s a green party,” Rolovich said. “We hope the entire crowd is wearing green. We’ll hire mercenaries from around the state to make sure people are wearing green entering the stadium. And we’ve got some special plan for the alumni. So all the alumni, get a hold of Na Koa and let them know if you’re going to the game.”

Like the person who wrote about the “spread”, as I am not a gambler, I just want a win, be it by one or more, ugly or pretty.

  2. dopaco24 October 12, 2016 8:33 am

In regards to irony: Yeah, but at least mainlanders like myself have options to view the Star-Advertiser via an online subscription.

  3. truegreen October 12, 2016 8:51 am

Don’t see how this is the correct usage of “ironic” here.

Would be more ironic if you paid a Star Advertiser subscription to read an article that said streaming was free.

  4. H-Man October 12, 2016 8:52 am

Championship this year? Okay, I like the mindset, but AF and SDSU, both tough games/teams, are on the road so it’s going to be that much harder. Boise St is simply at another level. But hey, the team plays error-free, selfless football; defense causes couple of turnovers; and the offense moves the sticks, maybe wins are possible.

  5. WarriorNY October 12, 2016 9:10 am

Good story by Ferd. At least they heard our complaints and are trying to remedy the situation. I hope they find a secure solution soon. Thanks for that story. Much appreciated.

  6. What??? October 12, 2016 9:11 am

#52 from yesterday, Woolsey has held all placements for Sanchez. Don’t you watch the games?

Its very enjoyable to see the rise of Coach Rolo and his staff. It’s obvious that Coach puts great deal of thought and deliberation into every part of the game and the program. Love the remark about “loading the gun” when the buses back into the tunnel to drop the Warriors off.

“The Mana is Strong” That needs to be a tee shirt.

    Live Aloha ~ Play Warrior!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  8. Andrew October 12, 2016 9:18 am

Anyone know if those “Green Party” shirts will be available to purchase in the H-Zone? Coach Rolo posted on Twitter that he’s going to pass them out to students on campus this week. I also like how he said anyone wearing red doesn’t get one.

  9. Da Punchbowl Kid October 12, 2016 9:20 am

Very happy to see a fellow Ka’a’awa guy, Chris Naeole being inducted the Polynesian Hall of Fame. Congrats also to Junior AhYou, Ma’a Tanuvasa, Riki Ellison and John Manumaleuna.

Also, wishing a very happy birthday to Steven Lakalaka.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

Ferd has an interesting column today. Basically a lot of words from those in position to make it happen but won’t, don’t or can’t. Results? The viewing public just gets stiffed again. Does it hurt UH exposure? Maybe? OCTW is all about kala so really getting UH athletics out to the public isn’t their primary concern. Only if it generates $’s then they’ll get on it.
With the next bid process the public needs to put some “eyes” on the process and have input. Would the proposal from Rick B. have been better for all those concerned? Maybe?

Anyhoo, heo with the spread. Play with your hair on fire, play for your brother next to you, focus, execute and WIN!
One thing handicappers have a hard time with…can’t put a point spread on the “fire that burns within”.

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  11. NotNasti October 12, 2016 10:31 am

Andrew: I picked up three “Green Party” t-shirts yesterday at Butigroove (Piikoi & Kapiolani). There were lots of shirts available.

    Good morning Tsaikos….

Love the attitude of Coach Rolo. Got to meet Rolo’s mom yesterday, nice lady.

Just a reminder. Tsaiko T-gate this Saturday. Early crew gets there at 9 a.m. I think this week there is a Mexican theme sooooo….lot’s of chicken, carne asada, pork, etc. But anything is welcome…. 🙂

If you haven’t been to one, all are welcome. Come on down for food, fun, football, friends, and an overall good time.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Thank you. If it wasn’t then I was just going to walk around campus with a back pack and look for coach.

  15. Unkanesson October 12, 2016 10:59 am

    Re: Coaches questions
    1. Wearing green: I wouldn’t favor penalizing fans (doubt that was a serious suggestion anyway) – gotta give positive reinforcement for their attendance. I would favor having green shirts, hats, maybe panchos or rain jackets for sale outside and inside the stadium.
    2. Pearl Harbor anniversary: I favor offering special admission deals to vets and active duty military. As for commemoration activities, I favor somber acknowledgements of the sacrifices of those who were there, rather than a saber-rattling parade. A missing man fly-over would be poignant. By the way, I am a vet.
    3. Coaches’ headset: That would be great – I might pay $100 for the privilege. (But I can’t attend the games – live on neighbor island. Heck, I’ll be at work Saturday night so no can even listen to the UNLV game on the radio!) One thing to note: Coach said “a headset [to] listen to an entire game”. Said nothing about a microphone, and that’s a very good thing. The last thing the coaches would want or need would be chatter from a fan in their headsets!

  16. hilorain October 12, 2016 11:12 am

Coach Rolo/ST: regarding your answer on penalties. With 6 seconds left in a game, a holding penalty would result in a 10 yard penalty. Would it also result in a 10 second run-off? If that is correct, wouldn’t it be a bad penalty?

  17. Sangamon Keith October 12, 2016 11:13 am

Stephen: I really love the Q & A blog columns but was hoping we could get a different afternoon post than the lead UH story of the morning. If there is another blog column coming this pm, I stand corrected. On suggestion would be an “Around the Conference” topic that might review the league standings, schedule and key games. It would bring another layer of in-league awareness that a lot of fans would enjoy … kind of like Kahuku fans tracking Mililani team performances … or Punahou/Kamehameha rivals tracking one another. Just a thought.

  18. H-Man October 12, 2016 11:33 am

The current athletic administration is not pointing fingers, but they “adopted” the Oceanic Time-Warner/UH contract which was a 7-year, sole-source contract extension executed by the previous AD and Chancellor in 2014. Live, free-streaming of football games cuts into Oceanic’s ability to earn a profit. The current AD, as reported, is in discussions with Oceanic and it would be unreasonable to expect a resolution this season. I believe the only condition that will be palatable to Oceanic would be to renegotiate (downward) the firm, fixed priced terms of the agreement. And for UH, season football ticket sales will have to increase substantially to offset any revenue it surrenders. It’s a balancing act for both parties.

  19. Da Punchbowl Kid October 12, 2016 12:25 pm

Those $5 “Green Party” Homecoming T-shirts are a real thing folks! Just picked up a pair for Sweety and I for the game – they’re selling like hotcakes! Much mahalo to Buti-Groove’s owners for their tremendous support of the team! 😉

are the classes offered to high school students in Australia or Samoa so different from classes in Europe or South America or where ever that the NCAA must use a magnifying glass to insure it meets US standards?

a Trig class or English class or Chemistry class is a class where ever it is taught

who says that USA high school standards are best in the world? they are not!

graduation dates – who says it must coincide with USA date?

completion of the class would be more important than graduation date – what happens if a US high school student graduates in 3 years? NCAA will forbid this student from participating in athletics until the 4th year has passed?

Why do I feel that the NCAA is in tune to TRUMPISM???? damn, that feels good!!

  22. A-House October 12, 2016 12:47 pm

    RE: #21
A-House–good questions. As for standards, they are probably not the same and can go either direction. But is a student must pass the SAT or similar recognized test to enter college, then should it matter? NCAA seems obstructionist.

Yep, still lurking after all these years. If I still lived on O’ahu I’d have season tickets and participate in T-Gates and other activities. Over here, best I can do is stream ESPN1420 (when I’m not working), and watch the game replays on OC16 (don’t have access to PPV).

of course oceanic is about the money. they’re a corporation. that’s all that their interested in. It needs to make a profit to be interesting otherwise UH football can go unaired for all they care.

  27. kahuna October 12, 2016 2:04 pm

#26 if its true…..we need to rethink our contract with OC when the current contract expires. I think if this keeps up, we may lose a couple of recruits a year. I think UH coaches use the fact that most UH major sports are televised on OC and parent can keep in touch with their kids by watching the broadcast.

If the situation do not change, it will make it harder for moms and dads to see their kid play and there will probably more of a hesitation for kids to come out here. The ability to see their kids play eases some of the concern of not being able to attend the game. Take that away and that may be a major sticking point for some family.

I know OC is not officially the warrior sports network but UH need to get one. If K5 ever bid again,UH should think seriously about going back. They looked after UH first and foremost. OC has other stuff going on and UH is just one part of their business.

  28. H-Man October 12, 2016 2:09 pm

UH Athletics has 73 foreign student-athletes listed on their current rosters (with the understanding not all are on scholarship). Of the 73, 12 are from Australia and 2 from New Zealand. The other student-Athletes are from American Samoa, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, England, Germany, Guam, Hong Kong, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Thailand. Getting foreign recruits through the NCAA clearing house is nothing new to UH. Max Hendrie’s difficulty may be unique to the high school he attended in Sydney. I don’t know. Perhaps UH Athletics may want to comment on the difficulty or ease it has experienced getting foreign students to clear NCAA scrutiny/approval, in general.

  29. 808SEC October 12, 2016 2:52 pm

    Agree with #27

In the current recruiting climate, the ability to be on TV and be seen by family and friends is a big part of the recruiting pitch used by coaches when communicating with kids and their family.

UH will be at a great disadvantage, recruiting wise, if they cannot get this resolved

  30. Maddog50 October 12, 2016 3:55 pm

Just watched Coach Sanchez presser. I sure hope we come out super jacked and smack theses guys all day long. His lip service respect is so light in the shorts and really thinks SDSU is by far the best defense they will face. Still kind of moaning over the loss two years ago as if they got robbed. I really think he thinks they will be in this to the end. A couple notches higher on emotion and execution will make this a butt wupping! Pride Rock!!!!! Go warriors!!!!!

  31. Da Punchbowl Kid October 12, 2016 4:03 pm

    808SEC – kahuna –

It does appear that OCTW is hurting with the recruitment. Even more frustrating when we look at where our program appears to be heading. Le’ts hope they can get figured out ASAP.

  32. Annoddah Dave October 12, 2016 4:31 pm

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
Charter Communications headquartered in Stamford, CE, merged/acquired Time Warner recently. There will be no Oceanic as we knew it and the name will be Spectrum. All semblance of a local connection is gone. So speculation of the “bottom line” orientation is probably correct with no “Live Aloha” from a mega company. Ergo, forget streaming or anything that does not bring the kala. This is similar to Longs Drugs and CVS. Notice fewer and fewer local oriented stuff on the shelves since the takeover?

  33. WarriorMojo October 12, 2016 4:40 pm

    Re Butigroove

Does anyone know if any part of their proceeds are passed on to UH? I notice that they never us the “H” logo or the name “University of Hawaii” in their designs. That means they do not submit their products for review by UH and therefore do not have a license to use UH logos. Also means they are not required to give UH a cut.

I know they were responsible for the “HI’sman” shirt for Colt and the “Chow Time” shirt for what’s his face. Never bought those because I wanted UH to benefit.

The Flying O — Hi., welcome to the blog. I notice you are a blogger of a few weeks here…if you haven’t posted under another name earlier. Just wanted to note that certain people sometimes spew religious rantings and nonsensical stuff to get reactions identical to yours (and others).

You know the saying about “Not dignifying that question with a response”? Same thing, don’t gratify their existence/comment with a response. If it really gets too bothersome, ST and the blog admin will intervene.

In other news, I am really looking forward to this week’s game. Another win and I’m on the bowl bandwagon!

  38. Dano October 12, 2016 7:45 pm

you don’t hear anyone in Las Vegas complaining about live streaming for saturday’s game. Fox 5 in Las Vegas is picking up the feed from Oceanic. Great job, OTWC, for making this happen. No worries……

Living on mainland and not being able to watch the game really sucks, it’s 2016 and I’m huddled around the radio like it’s 1960 -CMON MAN!!!

You may be a loyal fan but I have better things to do than watch the same thing every weekend : run run incomplete pass and punt lmao rediculous. Ya ill admit I’m a bandwagon fan but so is about half the uh fan base why u think only 20000 come to watch the games those are mostly season ticket holders and when we are good we Fill the stadium. Two things…..
The flying O, as I too am a Christian, do not forget your commandment from Jesus which is in the book of Matthew. You, I , all Christians are commanded to preach the word, highways and hedges, remember? Also Matthew 28:18-20 remember? Fear God is simply following Jesus’s command.

Fear God… if it is obvious your preaching is not wanted or appreciated, Jesus instructed us to shake the dust off our feet. Therefore, shake the dust off your feet brother and move on to find one that will hear Christ’s message.

    Peace to all 🙂

To all you MVB fans – the Warriors will play a FREE exhibition match against the Aardvarks of UCI on 10/28 at the SSC. The booster club will host a post-game potluck for both teams. This is a great time to get to know the players, new and returning. Join now!

    Good morning Tsaikos….

Hope everyone has a good day today. Don’t forget about this weekend’s T-gate…food, fun, friends, and football….

Not UH related but I had a question about something Bobby Curran said on the radio this morning. He was talking about Jamarcus Russel and a sport’s writers infatuation with him because he could throw the ball 40 yards from a sitting position and 60 yards from a kneeling position. Bobby then said why would that matter because in the NFL, he’d be considered down when he hit the ground, play over.

I thought a play was still alive in the NFL if a player fell but wasn’t touched by a defender??? I know in college, the play is considered dead once a player goes down, no matter if he was touched or not. Have the rules changed in the NFL????

    Just curious.

  51. NotNasti October 13, 2016 9:45 am

NFL RULE 7 Ball in Play, Dead Ball, Scrimmage
    Section 2 Dead Ball
Article 1: Dead Ball Declared. An official shall declare the ball dead and the down ended:
    ******
    (c) when a quarterback immediately drops to his knee (or simulates dropping to his knee) behind the line
    of scrimmage; or
    (d) when a runner declares himself down by sliding feet first on the ground. The ball is dead the instant
the runner touches the ground with anything other than his hands or his feet; or
Note: Defenders are required to treat a sliding runner as they would a runner who is down by contact.
