UH football: Ault invited to speak
The Warriors have reached out to former Nevada head coach Chris Ault to serve as a guest speaker this weekend.
The Warriors play host to the Wolf Pack Saturday at Aloha Stadium.
Ault, the creator of the Pistol Offense, was one of UH head coach Nick Rolovich’s mentors Ault hired Rolovich as Nevada’s OC in 2012 after he was not retained at UH.
Rolovich said the parents of Marc Ma, a former Iolani and Nevada player who died in June, changed their decision and will not serve as UH honorary captains this weekend.
On to the Q&A ….
Q: Will there be live streaming of the game?
A: Unless there are unexpected changes to the situation, live streaming is unlikely to be available this weekend.
Q: Do the Warriors stop recruiting a player once he commits to another school or do they continue to recruit until he signs a letter of intent?
A: “I treat them like they’re committed to that school, and we move on,” Rolovich said. “I just think you’re committed or you’re not committed. There’s no such thing as half-pregnant. If somebody commits and then de-commits, we’re on them right then. As soon as we know they’re de-committed, we’re back on them.”
Rolovich added that he usually gives a player a few days after a recruiting trip to make a thoughtful commitment.
“I’m not going to pressure anybody,” Rolovich said. “If I have to trick you to come to Hawaii, you’re probably not going to last here.”
Q: What is left tackle Dejon Allen’s status?
A: Allen is healthy and taking reps with the first-team offense.
Q: Will the Warriors ever have a mascot again?
A: “I hope so,” Rolovich said. “I didn’t have enough time to get it done this year. I’d like to. I think it adds to the game-day atmosphere. It gives something for the fans to identify with, and the nation to identify with. I think it’s something we need to address sooner than later.”
Q: Does the coaching staff have a prescribed number of touches for each member of the committee of running backs or is it more situational?
A: “It’s more situational,” Rolovich said. “We could have done a better job of getting Paul (Harris) a few more touches earlier in the season. I think we have a good problem where we have three backs who can be productive. In an offense where we’re not necessarily saying we’re going to run the ball, it gets a little bit hard.”
Q: Why doesn’t UH try John Ursua on kickoff returns?
A: Rolovich said Ursua, a slotback, is best suited for punt returns. Kickoff returns, Rolovich said, is “something he may be able to grow into. We feel we have some guys who also can contribute in the kickoff-return game.” Paul Harris, Keelan Ewaliko and Dejaun Butler have rotated as kickoff returners.
Q: Why does offensive line coach Chris Naeole wear a different color shirt than the rest of the staff on game day?
A: Actually, Naeole said, he has worn an all-black attire — polo shirt and shorts/ pants — for every game since he was hired by UH in 2013. It is Naeole who is the constant.
Q: Any chance of bringing back the all-black home uniforms?
A: Although Rolovich would like to use all-black uniforms, they are not available for this season. “This jersey combination was in the works — same with the white helmets — before I got the job (in November 2015),” Rolovich said. “I’d like to see the dark helmets come back, too. I’d love to see an all-black uniform. I think it would be really good. I think people kind of identify with us when we come out with the (all-black uniforms).”
Q: Are recruiting efforts “re-extending” to Texas?
A: The Warriors “spot” recruit in Texas, meaning they will pursue particular players in that area. That strategy was employed in recruiting a player from Minnesota. The Warriors’ recruiting bases are Hawaii, California, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, American Samoa, Australia, Las Vegas and Utah.
Have not been in a long while . . . 1st!
Can’t be half pregnant… Coach Rolo with da jokes hahaha
You’re either a Warrior or you’re not!
Reviewing the game notes not only a QB change but Tupac ascends to starting at guard with Eli and Waa at center and opposite guard. Leo K is listed as backup G. Leo has ability to play all positions but penalties and assignment along with Tupai getting healthy lead to this change. Looking for some long drives and quick strikes along with an all out swarming defense to carry the day. Meffy and Kau also return to add some juice. They will set out to establish the run and play action off of that, we have to stop them from attacking the perimeter and force everything in toward the crowd. As they say “huddle” on the ballcarrier!!!!!
Gotta be able to block and tackle … and catch the ball …
LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!
ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
Hoping for a fierce competitive game on Saturday. Hopefully, the Warriors come out ahead.
Go Warriors!
Question for Coach Nick Rolovich:
Coach is the “Run and Shoot offense” dead with you? I heard in one blog, you are running the Clemson type of offense which requires Run, Run Run. One post on the blog says stock of quarterbacks you recruited are not spread or Run and Shoot quarterbacks. I still support you but very disappointed that the “Run and Shoot offense” seems dead in your plans for our Warrior football team.
Looking forward to an exciting, conference football game. Go Warriors !!!
Flashback:
June Jones’ 1999 staff:

Sorry. Dan Morrison was the head coach at Punahou for a number of years prior to coming to UH in 1999.
Hope no pain for honorary captains…
And no Tsaikologial tricks by Ault…
Invite Mouse Davis to sit in front row
🙂
I would bet that the Run and Shoot concept is still alive but the pure R & S is dead. I like the idea of a more balance attack that allows Kemp to be special. He’s a special recv anyway, just allows him to be more special. We have some weapons Rolo will find success in whatever he’s running. It looks good from here.. just wish the tempo is a little more upbeat and Stubbelfield get back in the lineup. Expecting a coming out party for Dru this week + big things for O line and RB’s too. Get some puka’s in the UNR O line esp in the passing game and the defense should be able to do their thing this week. Dru + Defense and the momentum is on!
I use Slingbox to and they have PAC12 channels, wish the MWC had one.
Do you have any details regarding what is preventing Hawaii football games from being streamed on the mainland? Is it concerns over piracy? Desire to monetize the demand for viewing? I’ve never seen any information on what has changed between last year and this year that would prevent the stream from being made available to the Mountain West webpage.
Good Morning Warrior Nation!
This Friday at Noon, there will be a Cattle Call for a very special out-of-town guest, Boolakanaka. The luncheon will be at Maple Gardens Restaurant on 909 Isenberg Street, across from the old stadium park. There is an excellent all-you-can-eat buffet of Chinese cuisine offered for around $20 dollars, or you can order ala carte from their excellent menu.
More info on Maple Gardens here: http://www.maplegardenhawaii.com/contact_and_directions.php
Hope to see you there! Mahalo!
Good morning Tsaikos….
Hope all have a great day.
Just a reminder that that theme for this weeks T-gate is fried stuff. We’ll still have the grill set-up but also have a fry section to fry up whatever you want to bring to fry.
If you’ve never been to one…c’mon down. Good times, good freinds, good food, and football.. 🙂
Don’t understand the roadblocks in streaming the games. Must be contractual rights issue with MWC and Oceanic. TechnicAlly I could set up my phone with a live feed on FB, so it can’t be due to a physical inability for them to do this.
….and of course, GO BOWS!!!!!!
regarding streaming – why don’t you guys ask the AD or the SID.
this is just a blog – can’t do nothing for you.
I am sure I’m not the only one to contact AD directly. Received a response from Asst AD. A solution to the issue is being pursued-st this time there is no resolution nor a timetable for one. This was prior to the UT Martin game. I do not believe UH AD has much if anything that can be done, it’s either legal and/or technical as it relates to the binding agreement
Would love to see some old school players be captains. Al Noga would be great.
while the honor to be “honorary game captain” is great so may be the lingering pain for the loss of their son — best to them!
eye stil say ahtack da parimaters!!! do da same fo da keek off!
can’t bee worse den up da medle.
eye say giv da young playahs chance for parteaseepate — dis iz dare time!!!
Friday, eh!
an mak’um 5
St Juste and Lakalaka averaging over 5 yards per carry. Why not give them the ball? Seems like the right thing to do. Our new starting quarterback averaging 7 yards a carry. Running will open up the passing game where we have Kemp and a little bit of Ursua.
DPK…
Maple Garden lunch buffer is 13.95 plus tax and tip.
$17.00 would cover it.
I think the Ma family got put in an awkward position. Yes…Rolo probably was responsible for Ma going to Nevada and all but Marc passed away as a Wolfpack and his loyalty was with the University of Nevada and those are his buddies playing for Nevada.
I think it would have been more appropriate if the Ma family became an honorary captain during a Nevada home game instead of one for a UH home game.
It was a nice gesture on Rolo’s part to invite the Ma family but all in all, I think it worked out the way it should be. This is a home game for UH and should be someone with strong UH ties being our honorary captain.
Condolences to the Ma Family and hope they find peace!
Auuuright Al…you just saved me $3. Hoooo…the pake in me feels good….LMAO….
Oh wait…Can I say Pake??? Or am I a racist….LMFAO
(Jesse) James – you’re a false pordagee and a very fine one at that! 😆
al – Thanks for the clarification on the price for the buffet at Maple Garden. I called them to check and they said you had just called. Two great minds with the same thought! 😉
GOOD AFTERNOON, HAWAII!
(JESSE)JAMES #28
I Adopt you – you take care of ancient father – me cheap pake. Me pake, so you become pake too!
LOL…Tom, I am actually just over 50% Pake…the other races include French and possibly Italian or Spanish….but in today’s PC world, can’t be too careful….LOL
Not sure I agree with our coaches commit comment hopefully he is just being PC.
There is a reason players are classified as a soft commit, because they are 17 and not sure. I see no problem recruiting players that have committed to another school, hounding them no, recruiting yes. How many times do kids change their minds in a week? You hear a new coach is coming in and his commits were from the previous staff, you are not going to recruit that kid?
ARE YOU TELLING ME WE ARE NOT RECRUITING TUA??????????
I would recruit him until the day he signs. Cmon coach this is Hawaii’s team, maybe you need re-evaluate your personal stance and look out for what is best for the State. This is not an engagement and you are stealing a bride, its football.
Nevada favored by 3.5 points .
#32 agree,
You’re not pregnant until you sign the dotted line. Nothing saying you can’t have a little fun before you get pregnant.

Dang, DPK and al going have one cattle call on Fri. Am going to miss it, but will try to make it to another. Moooo
Totally understand the Ma families decision to not do the captain thing because they are loyal to Nevada.
I thought I read the initial article wrong at first because it seemed a bit odd they were our captain and not Nevada’s.
Ill take the +3.5 points this game
Tua: are you listening ….. Bama QB to transfer out to …
With Jalen Hurts entrenched as the Alabama quarterback, and three upperclassmen behind him, it only seemed to be a matter of ‘when,’ not ‘if’ someone would transfer out of the program.
That ‘when’ came on Wednesday, when AL.com reported that Blake Barnett would be leaving the program.
Barnett is a former five-star recruit in the class of 2015, and actually started Alabama’s opener against USC, playing the first two series, before giving way to Jalen Hurts. Even after Hurts was officially named the team’s starter in Week 2, Barnett received a handful of reps in wins over Western Kentucky and Kent State.
Still, it was clear that Hurts is the starter for the present and very likely the future, and with two highly-coveted quarterbacks committed in the class of 2017 (including top rated dual threat quarterback Tua Tagovailoa), it seemed like one of Hurts’ backups would eventually leave town.
… there still will be 4 guys ahead of you, + you and another frosh.
Tua has a lot of choices. He doesn’t have to worry.
“Cmon coach this is Hawaii’s team, maybe you need re-evaluate your personal stance and look out for what is best for the State. This is not an engagement and you are stealing a bride, its football.”
It’s a waste of time. Tua is not coming to Hawaii. Chase the players you can get realistically, not the players you wish you could get.
Marcus Mariota had to make a tough choice before choosing Oregon over Washington. (actually wasn’t that tough, prob the only 2 schools that recruited him) Bryan Bennet was a big time recruit out of So Cal expected to take over the starting QB and do big things and Johnny Manziel was the other freshman recruit with Mariota. You think Mariota got scared and decommited? He busted his okole, worked hard and studied. If you are a true athlete and believe in yourself doesn’t matter who is in front or back of you. You want that competition to drive and push you to be the best you can be. If you have greatness, you know. Tua vs Hurts 2017 is a good thing. Nice to see true freshman’s getting a crack at the starting job esp in the SEC. Amazing athletes this kids nowadays, so prepared.
I meant SlingTV not sling box. Lol
Hope braddah Dru can bring it home. He seems like a defense killer.
#32 Rolo himself goes up to watch Tua at St.Louis to make sure he knows Hawaii will be there should he consider other options. Can never say never.
But agree with postmanke. Tua will not be scared of competition. By now he’s a pretty confident young man.
Rolo should do the same with his stable of young QBs — be up front and tell them what his future plans are and if they all leave then Rolo has an additional recruiting challenge
stringing them alone is not good!
Guud Evening Tsaikos…Bootiful Evening!
#43 Postmanke…excellent post. Yes, it would be nice if Tua stayed home but me thinks he made a great decision. The SEC is a premier conference with a lot of future NFL types on all the teams. He will be tested for sure. Just wish the young man a lot of luck and stay healthy.
Mean while on the home front, we have our Warriors and it seems Coach is doing good on the recruiting front. Can’t wait to hear of more recruits and can’t wait for Saturday!
IMUA WARRIORS!
Hopefully the UH can get more local kids (like Timoteo & Santiago) who are passionate about representing their home state……more so than themselves.
Coach Naole doing a good job. He has the luxury of being there for awhile. Gotta give Lempa some time-totally new system. Taking the 3 1/2 with Dru. Warriors ROLLING!!
30. Er, me and who else?
19…how about all the Noga’s?
…and then all the Kafentzis’.
25…z-man, exactly.
The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. So, if A is the running back and B is a five yard gain, then the distance is shorter quicker going up the middle. To gain five yards going around the edge is perhaps 4X longer.
True, there is a time and place to go off edge.
RE: #55
al — Playing sand lot football in high school, I remember one of our smallish running backs who got squashed every time he tried to go up the middle… 2 yards at best. So he specialized in running wide. He ran 30-40 yards each play…but a 4 yard net gain was an improvement. 🙂
Problem with streaming is that the MWC mainland stream of the Oceanic feed was being hacked and streamed everywhere including Hawaii. The MWC then stopped streaming the games on MWC (I tried it and there was a notice that the game was not available)– probably because they were asked to by Oceanic or they did not want the stream hacked. Problem for Oceanic was the stream was being sent to Hawaii which could compromise PPV sales. Apparently no way to block the stream so it is only available on the mainland.
Tempmanoa I assume you have sources. Does this issue also plague the individuals who used to pay about 13 bucks to get access. I did this a few years ago and am of course willing to do it again. I’m sure I’m not alone? Just wondering if that’s possible
GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!
Would be great to see Boolaboola once more, not to mention AL, DPK etc but our condo has decided to switch to Hawaiian Tel and the Tel people will be coming to install its equipment tomrrow.
At leasr they said between 1 and 2 and not the Oceanic 1 to 6 time frame!
Of course for us extreme-retired, physically challenged types, there will be no OC-16 on Hawaiian Tel whoch means no more UH sports!
#59 – tom, I think you still can get UH sports on HawaiianTel. Just can’t get high school sports.
My tv and computer is Oceanic.
My land line telephone is Hawaiian Tel.
Usually, my phone is out of order when it rains.
Not so for my computer and tv.
But I still miss the good old days of KGMB hosting UH sports.
🙁
I am on the mainland for some of the games– like right now. For awhile last season, the MWC channel streamed the Hawaii games for free. Then they stopped and a message was posted that the Hawaii games were not available (they would appear briefly, then stop). I emailed the MWC and did not get a response, but did get one from our opponent that the stream had been hacked and re-streamed back to Hawaii and had to be stopped for that reason. One of the posters on the WSN Ohana website reported that when he tried to restream back to Hawaii, he got a cease and desist letter from Oceanic. I called Oceanic and they could not say what the problem was. When I called Oceanic on another technical issue, the tech said he “thought it might” have to do with the stream coming back to Hawaii for free.
More on streaming. I got an email from a friend also on the mainland who has tech credentials and has looked into this. He thinks the stream was NOT hacked because there are ways to stream from the MWC channel and then restream it using various websites and software that people can log into from anywhere including Hawaii and eliminate the need for PPV. Some of this restreaming is illegal as it constitutes rebroadcast. Streaming your Oceanic PPV feed in Hawaii could also be illegal if it were possible to do it.
DPK:
get room for 2 more tomorrow? sorry for late notice!
Would seem to me that there must be a way for TWC to make a buck off of me let alone hundreds of others or more to get them a hookup. What a shame for us and the opposition.
I would switch to Haw. Tel., but for the lack of OC programming. They have a deal for UH PPV, but not sure about OC16 non PPV broadcasts. Wife loves to watch HS games.
