Tresler’s take on Unutoa

Today’s column is about Mo Unutoa, the Kapaa offensive lineman who has the size and genes (his dad, Morriss, played in the NFL). Unutoa is among 30 high school stars from around the country who have already committed to play in the first Polynesian Bowl, Jan. 21 at Aloha Stadium.

Mike Tresler — who starred at safety for the University of Hawaii in the 1980s — is an assistant coach at Kapaa. Here’s what he has to say about Unutoa.

“Great kid with huge potential. Smart and has all the athletic tools. Wanted to see Mo get more aggressive this year and he has answered that, big time.

“He has the intangibles to be a big-time player at the DI FBS level.”

Unutoa hasn’t narrowed down his college choices yet, but he says the schools that have come after him hardest so far are BYU (his dad’s alma mater), Hawaii, Oregon State, UNLV and Utah.

Tresler said he thinks UH “has a shot,” and that Vanderbilt has also expressed strong interest.
