Some pretty-good moments

The morning after, Nick Rolovich had the same reaction to last night’s 41-36 victory over Tennessee Martin.

“Ugly,” Rolovich said.

Missed tackles, three interceptions that led to 21 points, and a 79-yard punt return for a touchdown looked as bad on video as they did live.

But, hey, there were some highlights, such as:

> If wideout Marcus Kemp keeps it up, he can expect an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine in February. He’s running crisp routes, adjusts to passes that are not directly air-mailed to him, and is an aggressive post-catch runner. His go-ahead TD catch was impressive, but his second TD, in which he dragged a defender into the end zone, was even better.

> The biggest surprise was safety Keala Santiago’s drop of a sure pick-six. After all, he once had three picks in a game for Kahuku. What wasn’t surprising was Santiago was in the right position — again — to make a play. Penn State used to have linebackers. USC had tailbacks. And Kahuku has produced DBs who just know where to be at the right time.

> Rolovich, whose hobby is studying Warrior football history, never saw Gaylord Carreira perform his routine of picking up the tee following kickoffs and energizing the crowd with his windmill arm swings and tumble-rolls. But Rolovich knew he wanted Gaylord on his sideline for the home opener. It wasn’t easy. Gaylord, who helps Nanakulu High, had hurt feelings after Bob Wagner was fired in 1995 and he was not retained by Fred vonAppen. Gaylord’s jersey also was repossessed. But Rolovich, through various contacts, such as Guy Antti, invited Gaylord to serve as an honorary captain. Equipment specialist Al Ginoza gave Gaylord a jersey with his old number 97. Even in his fifth decade, Gaylord still showed grit. He even hobbled out a few times after apparently dinging his knee on an inadvertent roll.

Another replay on OC Sports now, for me it’s on analog channel 16.

  2. Former UH Athlete September 11, 2016 11:56 am

Ugly is a good one word summary.

  3. H-Man September 11, 2016 12:01 pm

islandman, thanks for the heads-up on the replay.

  4. islandman September 11, 2016 12:22 pm

Kahuna re: previous day’s post. The first TD throw to Kemp in the right corner of the end zone didn’t look that wide open.

  5. kahuna September 11, 2016 12:32 pm

#4…maybe he was not wide open but it was a safe throw. Woolsey was throwing the ball to the back corner of then endzone. It was going to either be an incompleted pass or a touchdown. It was a safe play.

My point is a lot of Woosley’s pass were not really difficult passes. With our running game having such success, the passing game opened up. …yet IW only completed 50% of his passes. I don’t think that is something to be proud of.

In a true RnS where the opponents will expect you to pass every down….there will not be very many open looks and you have to thread the needles on a lot of passes and I’m not confident the IW can do that. That is probably the main reason OC Brian Smith is using the run to set up the pass as opposed to the RnS where you pass to set up the run.

  6. 808 September 11, 2016 12:44 pm

It looks like IW’s 50% completion rate will be there throughout the year. Interceptions will also be a part of the offense.

I’m not sure if a permanent QB change will be made this year. With current QB play, 3 wins sounds about right as suggested by a someone on yesterday’s blog. It was an ugly win. Maybe they can string a few ugly wins to get to at least 5 wins this year.

IW must really be a good practice QB.

  7. Ipu Man September 11, 2016 12:47 pm

Got to get H-Man’s Black undies with green stripe.
    H-Zone, man?

  8. Ipu Man September 11, 2016 12:48 pm

Rolo should order H-man’s black undies for the whole team.
    🙂

  9. Ipu Man September 11, 2016 12:49 pm

Kudos to all the coaches, players and staff—
    especially to Gaylord. 🙂

  10. Andrew September 11, 2016 12:51 pm

    6

A lot easier when he can’t be touched during practice.

  11. 808 September 11, 2016 1:01 pm

#10, Lol, That’s it. Petition the rules committee to change the rules to no hitting of the QB at anytime, then we will be okay. Or, improve on QB play possibly with a change at QB.

A 3 win season is looking like a solid prediction right now.

  12. RatMin September 11, 2016 1:21 pm

Listened to the game on radio last night and there were times of yelling for an awesome play and times of yelling because of a messed up play. Yet you could tell by the way the team played that they were out to get that first win of the season. Even after a big play by the UT-M offense or defense the Warriors came back out to either get the ball back or to score one for the home team. As coach Rolo said “it was ugly” but it’s better for the team to learn to come together in a hard win than to fool around in an easy win. Either way I will take the win.

    GO WARRIORS!

  13. Former UH Athlete September 11, 2016 1:34 pm

At the very least, an ugly win is better than any kind of loss.

But I have little confidence IW will seriously threaten MWC defenses with his inconsistencies. If I were a Def coordinator, I’d start scheming to take away Kemp and mix coverages to confuse IW. I don’t think blitzing UH is necessary because IW will make enough mistakes and give the defensive at least 2-3 INT opportunities each game.

With that in mind, then it is super important for the OLine and the RB corp to pound away on the ground. When the run game was working, it opened up throwing lanes for big pass plays.

UH will be in trouble vs teams that can plug up the run game and bracket Kemp.

  14. Former UH Athlete September 11, 2016 1:37 pm

Still, UH’s biggest problem are on defense.

Giving up 36 points to UT-M was UH’s best performance in 3 games. That’s scary bad.

  15. A-House September 11, 2016 1:42 pm

although we left after UH scored the TD at the start of the 3rd qtr – we went to bed after 11pm making it very difficult for me and Mrs A-House to be peppy today – the lag of traveling over 20,000 miles in 11 days – going in opposite directions – takes it toll on this old bod!

reading ST’s article in yesterday’s paper I was surprised to read him say UH traveled 5,000 miles to Australia – it’s 5,000 miles one way! and nearly to same miles from Hawaii to Atlanta — one way — heck, I want my 10,000 miles from Hawaiian and Delta!!!

yet, it was heart warming to see Gaylord as the honorary team captain and his run to and from the field with his patented tumble and right arm swing [ 3 times ] – unsure how many more times he can do this, but I was thankful to Coach Rolo for seeking him out and making him a part of UH football again.

yet, I have to wonder if Coach Rolo’s coaching selections, based on personal feelings of each, will bear fruit in teaching the players and “wins” – defensively ( poor tackling – players out of position, missed tackles, etc. ) and offensively ( dives up the middle, up the middle, up the middle ) – notice how Cal, Michigan, and Tennessee Martin attacked the “outside” of UH defense? yes, each did the dives up the middle, but greater success came on the outside [ where were the “corners”? or MLB in the middle? coaching defensive call or players out of position? ]

surely, UH offensive play book must have many more plays – I hope so!!!

  16. NorthShoreFan September 11, 2016 1:51 pm

Nice to see Gaylord on the sidelines again. A true Warrior!

I not a football coach or expert but does it make a difference if you run to set up the pass or pass to set up the run? I just think if the opposing d is good at stopping the run then you might want to pass to set up a run or vice versa?
    I’m so confused….

Keala was magnificent! Lakalaka was magnificent! Kemp showed up! D showed up…when it counted. We got the WIN!…now on to Arizona!

  17. NorthShoreFan September 11, 2016 1:58 pm

I remember there was a slot of nfl peeps coming out of Grambling U. Does it matter if you FBS or FCS or D2 or D3?

  18. Former UH Athlete September 11, 2016 2:11 pm

    17. If you’re really good, NFL scouts will find you no matter where you play.

Joe Flacco has a Super Bowl ring from Deleware.

Tony Romo has been the C-Boys franchise QB for a decade from FCS.

  19. Former UH Athlete September 11, 2016 2:13 pm

Carson Wentz, #2 draft pick, who had a great NFL debut today is from N. Dakota St.

  20. Former UH Athlete September 11, 2016 2:22 pm

Ok. The NBC SNF theme song is terrible. Sorry Ms Underwood. This song is awful

  21. AllG September 11, 2016 2:34 pm

Sad to say this will be a rebuilding year. In that case we should definitely use it to build a QB of the future. IW is not going to win us games, so we should use this opportunity to get experience for AZ, DB, and BR. Will build depth for next year and possibly find us a QB going into next season. This defense may be the worst I’ve ever seen at UH.

  22. AllG September 11, 2016 2:35 pm

Please bring KT back and redshirt him for next season!!

  23. Warrior Dave September 11, 2016 2:48 pm

I wish people would stop saying bring KT back for this year. He’s not coming back thos year.

Best case is that he goes back on scholarship to attend school free. UH Admin. Look to re-instate for football next season.

  24. SteveM September 11, 2016 2:53 pm

The game was a lot more exciting than necessary… but it was exciting to be in the stands.
    I’ll happily take the win.
I’ll happily take an ugly win next week too.

  25. 808 September 11, 2016 2:59 pm

The defense sure could use KT right now.

With this defense, Hawaii would need to win in a shoot out in almost every game.

  26. tom September 11, 2016 3:03 pm

    GOOD AFTERNOON, HAWAII!

While KT might be of great help to our defense this year, it isn’t going to happen unless the Court so directs.

It would make the current campaign against domestic violence with the ads featuring our football, basketball (M&W) and soccer Coaches look stupid.
Deferred acceptance of a plea of guilty is not a conviction but is admitting to guilt.
Not alike to a deferred acceptance of guilt to chicken stealing where the defendant says = Judge, does that mean I can keep the chickens?

  27. Snator September 11, 2016 3:07 pm

What was the final attendance count? Couldn’t find it in the paper but it looked to be less than 20,000.

  28. Former UH Athlete September 11, 2016 3:11 pm

    27. 19,994 was the number on the online stat sheets

  29. cocobean September 11, 2016 3:14 pm

Unless the defense finds it’s self we’re going to have to out score the opponent to win. The caveat to that is to out score the opponent by an IW led offense.

While we may not have enough size and speed on D, it’s alarming to see this weakness combined with mental errrors and breakdowns in fundamentals. Elements the players and coaches have control over to correct. Tackling can be taught and learned. Proper alignment and assignment can be taught and learned. As a unit the players and coaches have to take responsibility for things they can control and improve on. That also goes for the offense and special teams.

  30. islandman September 11, 2016 3:39 pm

    18. Jerry Rice, from a FCS school.

  31. A-House September 11, 2016 3:42 pm

in 1956, I was hauled into court and pleaded “no contest/nolo contendre” – that was the advise of my Dad’s attorney – keep my mouth shut and let the Judge decide – silently, pissed me off!! I will presume this is today’s “no contest”?

I am guilty of what? one of four guys passing car keys to the person involved in an accident later? what about the 3 other guys who were NOT pulled into court? cop was after my ass!

it’s easy to say, “yes”, plead no contest – just like our esteemed Congressional members who have NO ONE serving in the Armed Forces – easy to say go to war or bomb the hell out of them! I have nothing to worry about a family member being injured or killed.

I believe only 3 have sons currently in the military — wonder what they feel every time they have to vote?

  32. 3-Prong September 11, 2016 3:49 pm

Does anyone know the ticket sales vs turnstyle numbers? Had a bet at work. Might have made a few bucks. hehe

  33. Rich September 11, 2016 3:50 pm

Rolo must not have studied the last three years of Woolsey’s history (picks and overthrows).

  34. z September 11, 2016 3:51 pm

Kory had a nice game. Nice to see Unga score. That hit by Choi got to be one of the hits of the game. I really like our young players. They just need more pt. Marcus has to be the player of the game. We have a really good one two punch with SJ and Boom Lakalaka. A lot of plays were there to be made. I like how Lempa was on the sidelines coaching up players. This teams need it. Not a coach sitting up in the booth scratching his head like last year. The plays the d made at the end of the game was huge. I like like how Kory fought his way to get in front of the qb and how our dbs were there to fight and get the int.

  35. Tempmanoa September 11, 2016 3:57 pm

Ikaika can be maddening because of his iOS and downs, but he is the best we have for now. He may throw 3 INT’s, but he throws for 4 TDs, , he completes passes on clutch third downs, he completes 3 passes, but two are for TDs. He may force balls, but then he makes a great read on broken coverage on Kemp for TD Pass that sealed the game (Smith complimented him on that read and completion). For all the honors that Graham and Wittek had, Woolsey played more solid games– Wyoming he came in for Graham down 21 points and threw two TD’s in getting the win. He threw the last second pass to beat UNLV. When more than one TD pass was rare under Chow he had a 3 TD game vs Fresno and 2 vs San Jise. He is a battler, but His inconsistency will eventually lead to a change once Rolo is comfortable another QB can run enough of the offense– particularly the passing offense. But Rolo did not think that happened last night. See what happens next game.

  36. Former UH Athlete September 11, 2016 4:23 pm

    31. Tickets sold “attendance” was 23,900 from UH athletics website box score

  37. Ohana Hawaii September 11, 2016 4:27 pm

It’s the beginning and lot more to come. University of Hawaii football great job on the field. But need a little more practice on defensive. University of Hawaii football program and also other sports program. They’re playing or schedule non conference games with great large universities and top 10 tops team. Peoples that’s come to the casino or works there talk really bad about the University Of Hawaii. But come down to it. UNLV only schedule one major college and teams are rebuilding for non conference games. Not for UNR their schedule great school every year. But the problem is what happened to the 36,000 or more support for the football program. I only reading there is only 24,000. I only go to see them when Hawaii come up here in the mainland.

  38. H-Man September 11, 2016 5:08 pm

The parking lot seemed crowded. Lots of canopies and hibachis going. The concession area in the north end zone was crowded. Long line for the plate lunch. The shuttle buses were very crowded. Sure seemed more like 25,000 than 19,994.

And my black and green Warrior underpants brought good luck. That and a team that would not quit and a defense that delivered in the end. And….Ikaika delivered when he had to.

    Go Warriors !!!

  39. Warrior Dave September 11, 2016 5:16 pm

I noticed a lot less food vendors at Aloha Stadium. Line was super long at the lone grilled steak stand. They also didn’t let me take in my empty hydro flask. Said they banned it this year due to it being metal.

  40. justsomeguy September 11, 2016 5:31 pm

I completely agree that the win was far from beautiful…and respect to IW for sticking it out like that. He clearly struggled, as usual, buuuut when we really needed him, he came through.

And to everyone complaining that this offense looks “just like the Chow era” I can only assume you know literally nothing about football.

Hope everyone’s weekend was enjoyable, aloha.

  41. kawika49 September 11, 2016 5:47 pm

Even tholugh it was fugly; it was a looong awaited win.

  42. 808 September 11, 2016 7:03 pm

Rolo’s offense and chow’s offense look different. It’s just that IW is inefficient in both offenses.

We will have to wait until Rolo finds someone who can run his offense. The 50% completion rate and the interceptions are glaring stats.

Although, IW did make it count when he needed to make it happen. Can he do it every Saturday with 50% completion rate? We will find out this season.

  43. islandman September 11, 2016 7:11 pm

Ammon made a key recovery of a fumble by the UT-M punt returner, which didn’t look like a fumble. Two plays later, Saint Juste scored.

  44. 808warriorfan September 11, 2016 7:32 pm

“GAYLORD” … WE NEED HIM BACK ON THE SIDELINES !!!!!

Did not know it was vonAppen who didn’t want him … that sucks … I know I wasn’t the only one who wondered what happened to him … glad he’s doing well …
Coach Rolo bring GAYLORD back …

WE WANT GAYLORD … WE WANT GAYLORD … WE WANT GAYLORD …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS

  45. Rodney September 11, 2016 7:45 pm

    Listen to game on radio.
Can Bobby give down and distance in every play.
Formation offense and defense. Discribe the action going on and then give emotional reaction.
I have no idea what’s taking place. Ex drive right behind so and so.Fly sweep right. play action etc… National broadcasters do it!!!!
    Love Bobby but please!!!!!!!
    Describe, present a visual. !

    17.

The all-time example of a non D1 player is, of course, Chris Ivory, from Tiffin.

The Saints also discovered James Fenderson, who unbeknownst to me, was a NFL prospect.

  48. Bryson September 11, 2016 8:47 pm

That last Stand by the defense was awesome it looked like everything finally clicked on,I can see Keala Santiago starting at some point if Daniel Lewis injury keeps him out,Love the commitment from Damien Packer but I don’t see him having the speed to recover and chase someone down…To win games this season the defense and special teams are gonna have to create turnovers like they did last night and the offense is gonna have to stop giving the ball away..If we can do this we will have something to build on…

  49. Bryson September 11, 2016 8:48 pm

I wonder what happened to Dany Mulanga I don’t believe I saw him dressed for last night’s game

  50. not sean September 11, 2016 9:06 pm

Rodney, ever wonder if the goofus and doofus tandem in the radio booth are helping to turn more people OFF to UH football than the play of the team? I stopped listening to the radio broadcast when Kekaula went to TV. He could recap a play and break it down like slow mo instant replay. AFTER the play but at least you knew what happened. With those two clowns I get more game info through a pair of binoculars and my cellphone. ..even when the game’s on the mainland. Everybody agrees that an underperforming player should be coached up or replaced. It’s like Chow is running the radio station. S.O.S. every week, every year.

  51. 3-Prong September 11, 2016 9:43 pm

Thanks FUHA. Oh well, lost the bet.

  52. burro sabio September 11, 2016 10:33 pm

I saw Mulanga dressed and on the sideline. The box score says he played.

  53. imua808 September 11, 2016 10:34 pm

Zeno Choi plays his heart out but he is not a D1 DT starter material.

Didnt help when Kaaumoana Gifford got ejected and Kika Faalologo is not 100% back into the scheme.

Rolo may need to move some Oline guys to DT to give Kory some rest.

  54. burro sabio September 11, 2016 10:43 pm

A handoff between the tackles looks the same to me whether Jones, Ron Lee, Rolo, Chow, 0r Smith calls it.

  55. z September 11, 2016 11:01 pm

Special teams coach may need to reshuffle personnel on the coverage teams. Or make Rigo work on his tackling skills.

  56. z September 11, 2016 11:13 pm

    Kahuku also have produced dlinemen.

  57. hilosupaman September 12, 2016 12:08 am

Wow, I had to double check the box score, some people make it sound like we lost.

Rome wasn’t built in a day… lets give Rolo and the boyz some time.

Although there was clearly some mistakes made, I can defiantly appreciate the fight that this team has shown

  58. Ohana Hawaii September 12, 2016 1:11 am

All sounds good at UH. Come on we must support them!. Whatever it takes win or lose!. Remember that the only major sports in town now. Because there is no Pro Bowl. You should read in Las Vegas RJ sports page? They take about UNLV of course. But what got me mad about is what they said about University of Hawaii football program. The way their going with the support of fans going to attending each game. The football program might not be long. Because they’re having problems with Financial wise. I’ve wrote back to them and them that? Who are you be talking bad about? UNLV is in court and might be going to federal court. Because of five former Head Coaches. One Mike Stanford never gotten paid for his final two years of his contract. Then two years ago Bob Huck never received his four years remaining of his contract also!. David Rice never received any of his money to only half a season. Because had resign. Others baseball and female Head Coach are suing the school for that reason. And remember that there are a lot’s of Hawaii’s peoples and other states lives in Las Vegas. And still a big fans of their universities their’s come from. They’re reply was sorry to say that!. Yeah right! .

  59. Maddog50 September 12, 2016 5:39 am

    Was Gifford ejected? If so-why

  60. 3-Prong September 12, 2016 6:12 am

Heartwarming and inspiring to hear in Rolos press conference that Gaylord took time off from work, teared up and gave a speach to the team after recieving the game ball. As Rolo put it, “that’s what Hawaii is about”.

  61. andy war September 12, 2016 6:17 am

PLease try Zwahlen out give the 4 star QB a shot at the helm. I cant imagine , why Aaron Zwahlen is not the second string QB(Or first). He was said to be the next Johnny Manziel by ESPN
