    From previous thread:

Thanks Mav re: senior aces. I missed Howlings ranking at 95.

And I also agree on another Danielson, anyday! Was hoping Granato, even though not with the same accolades as Danielson coming out of high school, would surprise everyone and be like her. She still could. She has the potential, maybe not the same hops, but potential.

I just can’t believe how tall these girls are getting. And these particular 6’6″/6’8″ players are not just tall….but are damn good in both front and back row.

Iosia is the real deal, among the top five setters in the country.

For those with inquiring minds about the singers and style of singing of the Anthem and Hawaii Pono’e. Not completely sure of how the selection is done, but UH has a site where you can video audition to sing at matches. I agree that the last few matches a lot is lacking in the way the singing is done. UH should make a requirement where the songs should be done the way the songwriter wrote it. None of this thrills of wavering notes and high finish, such as done with some singers with Hawaii Pono’e. We need more of Tai Manu-Olevao’s and Danny Kaleikini’s!

  4. PBnJz September 10, 2016 12:21 pm

Wasn’t thrilled with last couple anthem singers either. And if you have to wear a hat to make your fashion statement, you should probs refrain from performing National Anthem!

  5. todde September 10, 2016 1:43 pm

I appreciate anyone who sings the national anthem and Hawaii Pono’e. At least they are giving their best. Can you do better in front of a audience?

As mention by hollycow, I also can’t stand the wavering notes. If they don’t sing in like it should be sung, DON’T SING!!! It is disgraceful.

I’m a Granato convert. Use to rag about her lack of height/ blocking. Girl got game. Her VB IQ is off the charts. Like Lisa Strand-Maa said she just needs her sets off the net a little.

  7. noblesol September 10, 2016 3:03 pm

Agree with you rabbits ears, I think she is developing ok. She does better if her set doesn’t trap her up against the net or outside the pin. She hasn’t been fading in the later sets like last year. She seems to see the block and court better as the match wears on. And when she really gets into one it’s like a gun going off.

  8. Ron September 10, 2016 4:20 pm

I agree Granato has improved a lot but she is still too mechanical in her movements and her thinking. She also needs to work on her passing. I think she needs to relax more and try some new shots. Smith should be subbed in for her or at least for someone so she can regularly play the back row . Her passes are things of beauty! She did make the mistake trying to poach one from Savannah but I don’t think that will happen again.

  18. Hot September 11, 2016 3:53 am

If everybody’s healthy, I’d like to see this lineup:
    OH1 – Castillo (Smith)
    OH2 – Greeley
    MB1 – Maglio (Guinasso/Anderson/Ponce)
    MB2 – Mitchem
S – Iosia (Ross for the 6-2 sub)
OPP – Taylor (Koelsch for the 6-2 sub)

Of course, I have no idea how well Castillo will do on the left, I just want to see if she could provide the stability or consistency that Granato and Sibley cannot. It goes without saying that Granato could sub in for her to provide some quick kills.

The middles could be flipped, depending on Mitchem’s ability to provide offense at this level. Of course, Burns should continue to get reps during the course of the season.

With her experience, Higgins could be used as a setter if Iosia is struggling, or she could jump in the mix as a serving sub, competing with Anderson, Ponce and Guinasso.

  19. auntyz September 11, 2016 7:58 am

Please explain what 6-2 means. I know it is not referring to a players height.

  20. tongo September 11, 2016 8:48 am

Watching the replay of the Purdue upset of Stanford. Cardinals were up 2-0 and had match point in the third but the Boilermakers came back. Cardinals are huge with MHs’ Lutz at 6-8, Fitzmorris at 6-6, and Ajanaku at 6-3, and pins’ Hodson at 6-6, Vanjar at 6-4, and Plummer at 6-6 at OP. Purdue was much quicker and more importantly hung in there tough.

Like how Lindsey Berg’s passion and how she is instilling the passion to stick to it with the team. It will pay off big time in post season.

  21. tongo September 11, 2016 8:51 am

    Oops – Hodson is 6-3.

  22. Bleachercoach September 11, 2016 9:52 am

#18…..That’s exactly my line up too…WOW!!!….I bet if they tried it we would be alot better…I see more consistency with thone players exactly to the tee….Great Eyes!! The main thing is we tried if that lineup wouldn’t solve passing and hitting consistency

  23. menehune September 11, 2016 12:26 pm

Cal Poly lost to Stanford in 5.

    2. yes that ‘little gal’ (volleyball relative speaking <6') is not in to hang out with the big gals but because she is one of the big gals.

  25. WaWa September 11, 2016 3:00 pm

    19. auntyz, a 6-2 is a 6-player offense using 2 setters opposite one another in the rotation. Setter 1 becomes a hitter (or is subbed out for a right-side hitter) upon rotating into the front row as setter 2 (or her front row sub) rotates into the back row and becomes the setter (or is subbed out for a setter).

UH utilizes a 5-1 offense which means it is a 5-player offense with 1 setter that sets from whatever position she is at in the rotation whether it is backrow or front. While running the 5-1, Dave will occasionally employ a double sub to get a taller blocker/offensive threat in the front and have a setter play the backcourt.

There were times last year (not sure if this happened this year) in which Dave would sub out a taller setter (Koelsch) in for a shorter setter (Higgins) when she reaches the front row to provide a bigger block, an offensive threat, while still being able to utilize the slide attack. Now this is a modified 5-1. Popularized the year when Vakasausau set the backrow 3 rotations and Carey set the front 3 rotations. People commonly mistakingly refer to this as a 6-2. It is still a 5-1 because you are just replacing the setter with another setter.

  26. warriorwahine September 11, 2016 3:12 pm

alright. now time for vs u-dub.

    cindy the thread please.
