I think its the dumbest thing to waist two DS substitutions for one OH hitting position. I get that Sibley may need a backrow sub, and I get that Guinasso is serving in place of Greeley to save that shoulder of hers, but against Washington tomorrow we may need all the substitutions possible if the games go into extended time. Either let Sibley serve, or let Guinasso play the backrow or use Emma Smith to serve and do both.

62. If you move Castillo to left, then Burns must produce. I understand she is a work in progress. Ross is undersized, and I don’t believe she will be successful against the bigger teams (plus she will be inconsistent…only a freshman). Koelsch has not produced from the left when she was put there. I think we need Mitchem to return so that Castillo can move left. She is doing well and I hope that translates to the outside. Other opinions?

Haha that was a classic ‘green card’ objection. Coach asked for one thing, but Denise the down ref saw something else other then the challenge so they replayed the whole thing. I get the ‘challenge’ system, we are trying it out, but unlike olympics, there is one person dedicated to just watching the challenge who allegedly is in some dark room viewing the tapes and doesn’t take that long. Sometimes takes really long but they just testing it out in college. I hope the system can be worked out efficiently for the college level. We be interesting to see the match up on Sunday. Go Bows!

Started a bit slow but a overall a very efficient night for the Bows. By the way, just want to mention the singing of the National Anthem. Two guys sitting next to me made some disparaging remarks tonight. I sort of agree with them though she was not that bad when compared to others. Wish the UH personnel would preview whoever they choose to sing. The worst ones are the ones who tries to add trills and tremolos to the song or go way off key.
64. Maverick, in the post game show, Castillo said she was more comfortable on the outside. She said she missed “passing”, interesting comment. But when Annie comes back in, Castillo should definitely be on the outside. She’s picked up more finesse moves and seems to be more aware than just blasting away. And yes, that table with the NAPA poster was where the Udub coach was sitting, scoping things out. I think Dave intentionally kept Iosia in and will bring in Higgs to throw off their game. What an advantage to be able to strategically choose between setters to change the game play. GO BOWS!!!!
Hope Dave sticks with Iosia Sunday, she’s just better imo no offense to higgins.
90. Thx for the info. I don’t know why she misses passing, she was not very good at it last year, at least on serve receive. I hope she moves left and helps make that position one of strength. Hope Greeley progresses to full strength by season’s end.
90.as mentioned previously, the UW coaches were at the opposite end of the court, the tables have the Extreme Fun, Hawaii Pacific Health and Hawaii Self Storage banners.
we’ll see what happens Sunday. Did ask Shoji if Mitchem would play, he said he had hoped to get her back by then but looking like it will be next week.
BTW, they voted on captains on Wednesday but just found out about them tonight. Higgins and Kahakai were voted co-captains. Taylor will be the floor captain when she’s out there.
Washington seems to keep their unforced errors to a minimum. Their passing is not up to the net (around 3 meter line); but they shank fewer balls than UH. The setting is mixed (2 setters) not really fast nor high, somewhere in-between. The hitters utilize the soft tip shot effectively and are less erratic than UH. The MBs are quite active but not especially tall (1 tall player). The back row is business-like (not helter skelter). Out of system and they struggle a bit.
Edge to Washington (over Hawaii): fewer mistakes and better blocking.
Key to the match: Get them out of system.
85. the challenge system isn’t perfect. Thought it was a good challenge by Gooden. If it’s inconclusive they’ll replay it, Since there is no dedicated person off in a booth somewhere, it’s up to the down official so doubt if it will get any quicker.

UW had 11 hitting errors. up until Set 3, the blocks were fairly even. UW outblocked UVU 5-1 in Set 3.
Anyway, if you want to come to Saturday’s matches, admission is free BUT they are clearing the arena in between the two matches.

I was going by the Washington website (gohuskies.com) which has Huskies with 13 total blocks to UVU’s 7. Total Errors: Washington 11, UVU 18.
Castillo was a little inconsistent with passing last year, but it wasn’t all bad. Often, Shoji would bring her in cold off the bench and put her in to pass. Almost always, she would shank or get aced on the first pass, but would pass the next serve perfectly. Perhaps she has become more consistent in the offseason and was looking forward to playing all six rotations before the injury to Mitchem forced the coaches to put her in the middle. For an OH playing MB, she’s having a great tournament thus far. 10 kills, 2 errors, 16 attempts, .500, 5 blocks.
I thought Castillo was a decent passer last year.
She said she misses passing because she feels it resets her after a play and gets more in the groove of the game.
I know this is repetitive, but our lefts will be our doom this year if something is not figured out soon or if Granato/Sibley can’t get more consistent. Castillo/Mitchem/KG could be the answer, but don’t know yet. The only thing I do know is that our lefts are struggling big time. No way we will advance far in the tournament or even win the conference if our leftside is not figured out soon. And I don’t see help coming in next year…as of yet anyway.
The 2027 senior aces just came out this week, Hawaii had zero on that list. Texas was the big winner on this list with the top 2 going their way. You see players at 6-6, 6-8 committing to other programs. We are getting 6″/6’1″. I’m sure it has something to do with the unknown of Dave’s retirement.
I’m really hoping Norene stays when Dave retires. She has often stated he was one of, if not the best, reason she chose Hawaii.
Can’t we just clone Dave and keep him for another 40 years? He will be missed when his time comes.
102. HCF, Hawaii has the 95th ranked senior ace, Sophia Howling. She enpven tweeted it. I believe Shaney Lipscomb is in the “just missed” list.
Not to overly argue the point, but Castillo’s reception percentage was .800 last year. With all the grief TMO was getting last year, she received serve at a higher rate. Only Maglio was worse, and she wasn’t expected to be a passer. At the Div I level, .800 is not good. And respectfully, several players came in off the bench like Castillo to receive serve, and performed over 90% of the time. That being said, I hope she has improved and can be counted on to pass well, like Greeley.
102. Well, the flip side to getting 6′ players (OHs, specifically) is that they aren’t 5’10”. But your point is well taken, although I’d take another Danielson or Willoughby any day.
Still believe that the left side hitting woes would be “cured” by Iosia’s fast sets. How else does one explain us winning the third set against Wisconsin and taking a 19 – 16 lead in the 4th — without Nikki Taylor and Koesch on the right?
Using the current high sets (with Higgins) we lost the first 2 sets 25 – 13, and 25 – 10 vs Wisconsin.
I saw Washington do a double sub regarding the setter (replacing Finau with Tanner) just like UH. Never saw them use the 6 2. Tanner (at 6’1″) played front row, while Finau (at 5’8″) played BR.

Not sure why coach is not keeping Kendra in her roll like last year. She is a awesome blocker and good setter. She is too valuable to be riding the pine like last night.
NIU is a good team, but flying in just a day before the game and then cramming in a luau suggests that at some level they were treating this tournament less than seriously. They had their one good set against Hawaii and then started to fade. With two matches today, those will be some tired players by the time UW faces them. Not sure what their fan base is thinking, but if they had Hawaii’s fan base, their coach would be in the hot seat.
Shoji’s evaluations were curious:

Casey Castillo had only 10 sets total, but hit for .400, which was better than NT, MG, and KS.

Nervous? Over what? Although passing was better latter, NIU’s passing break downs (sending free balls over the net) contributed.
