Miss Hawaii doing the corner with Ryan? I THINK that would be her, anyone know background of her? She a former vball player? Manoa & lisa mentioned norene possible starting setter tonite.

    4. 2013 vs the ‘pink wahine’

Yes, Iosia is setting middles are Castillo and Maglio

Miss Hawaii Chelsea Hardin played at ‘Iolani and Cal Poly SLO
She’s been in the corner for couple of matches.

  9. Blunite September 9, 2016 7:07 pm

NIU coaching staff has UH outnumbered 6 – 4

  10. T103 September 9, 2016 7:08 pm

Nice establishing the middles early. Hope our passes are good, no passes = no plays….. Go Bows!

  11. Blunite September 9, 2016 7:14 pm

Finally, a team with a worse passing problem than UH

  12. WaWa September 9, 2016 7:16 pm

I think its the dumbest thing to waist two DS substitutions for one OH hitting position. I get that Sibley may need a backrow sub, and I get that Guinasso is serving in place of Greeley to save that shoulder of hers, but against Washington tomorrow we may need all the substitutions possible if the games go into extended time. Either let Sibley serve, or let Guinasso play the backrow or use Emma Smith to serve and do both.

  13. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:16 pm

Castillo and Granato in on the block. UH leads 15-11 at the TTO

  14. Blunite September 9, 2016 7:17 pm

3 SEs already, not sure which side has a bigger passing problem

  15. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:18 pm

    12. the match is Sunday, not tomorrow. not sure why you have a problem with their substitution pattern

  16. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:19 pm

Castillo with a solo, it’s 16-11. TO NIU

  17. Warrior Dave September 9, 2016 7:21 pm

Castillo is a beast tonight!! Happy for her.

  18. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:23 pm

NIU has closed to 17-15. TO UH

  19. Blunite September 9, 2016 7:25 pm

Blockers should open their eyes or wear goggles. One of them had to pick up the rebound. NT can’t go that far

  20. WaWa September 9, 2016 7:25 pm

Correction Sunday* and waste* lol. I must be getting tired. (subbing pattern) It’s using two people for a one-person job. I mean, it’s not bad strategy if you have the numbers of substitutions to burn, but it may come back to haunt a team when sets go into overtime and you burned a bunch of subs early on.

  21. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:26 pm

Taylor with an ace. UH up 20-15. TO NIU

  22. T103 September 9, 2016 7:28 pm

Give credit to N. Illinois, they had to travel a LOONG way to get here, they play all 3 matches for this tournament in the same day (their own time zone back home) and then they have to travel back and then take a 9 hour bus ride to D.C. I believe… shesh….

  23. Maverick September 9, 2016 7:28 pm

    21. They will also benefit RPI-wise by playing UH and Washington.

  24. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:29 pm

Sibley blocked. it’s now 20-19. TO UH

  25. Blunite September 9, 2016 7:30 pm

Good as a tip, wide open middle. did I mention passing?

  26. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:33 pm

UH continues to have problems closing it out. it’s 21-21.

  27. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:36 pm

NIU challenging the no-touch call. If it stands it’s 24-22. if not, it will be 23-23. and it’s 23-23

  28. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:38 pm

Taylor calls for the ball, goes line. UH wins 26-24. great dig by Kahakai.

  29. jmy September 9, 2016 7:41 pm

Purdue beat Stanford in 5 after being down 0-2…

  30. Maverick September 9, 2016 7:41 pm

Embarrassing first set. No effective left-side attack yet. Middles rock, Taylor is producing very well. To echo Cindy, UH having trouble holding leads late in a set. UCLA match had the most painful examples.

  31. Blunite September 9, 2016 7:41 pm

With our passing problems, anything can happen

  32. WaWa September 9, 2016 7:42 pm

I like that sub by Dave to put in Greeley in the front. It probably confused NIU’s blocking assignments enough to give Taylor even more of an advantage. Cool move!

  33. Maverick September 9, 2016 7:43 pm

Cindy, what was your impression of Washington? How would you compare them to UCLA?

  34. WaWa September 9, 2016 7:49 pm

LOL I always felt that if your shoe comes off while playing volleyball, you are just not serious about playing the sport if you don’t lace up tight enough haha.

  35. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:49 pm

    30. enough already. we get it.
another challenge by Gooden asking for a touch.

  36. Blunite September 9, 2016 7:50 pm

NIU block touching a lot of balls.

  37. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:51 pm

    32. Washington was good. UCLA was better. but hard to gauge with them playing UVU. Gooden loses challenge. two kills by Maglio ties it at 9

  38. Blunite September 9, 2016 7:54 pm

    A tip

  39. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:54 pm

    25. NIU has some size. Nos. 17 and 18 are 6-4, Radtke 6-2

  40. z September 9, 2016 7:54 pm

    That was a canon.a

  41. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:55 pm

UH up 15-12 at the TTO

  42. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:57 pm

    37. OMG a tip. it goes down. no comments when they dig it.

  43. warriorwahine September 9, 2016 7:57 pm

wahine play not bad but they dont want to do this toe to toe thing with the big dawg

  44. Maverick September 9, 2016 7:57 pm

    32. Thx. I know UVU is a poor opponent to evaluate UW, but I appreciate your opinion as I was unable to watch the match.

  45. Maverick September 9, 2016 7:57 pm

    43. 36, I mean, not 32.

  46. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:57 pm

great angle by taylor, lands inside the 3 meter line. it’s 16-12 TO NIU

  47. Maverick September 9, 2016 7:58 pm

Another observation. Appears to me that Kahakai is going to Taylor almost exclusively when she has to set someone. Anyone else observe the same thing? If I’m scouting, I would make a note of it.

  48. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 7:59 pm

    43. it all depends on the matchups. wasn’t overly impressed by UW but they have size and much depends on the PASSING.

  49. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 8:01 pm

    46. not necessarily true. she just set Granato, but that was a trap set to the left, the last time she set Taylor, Taylor was on the right.

  50. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 8:02 pm

    UH up 20-14. TO NIU

  51. Maverick September 9, 2016 8:04 pm

    48. Seems to happen often. But I may just be looking for her to go to Taylor.

  52. z September 9, 2016 8:06 pm

    Yea Kalei with the kill.

  53. Blunite September 9, 2016 8:06 pm

The OPP usually gets the off balls. That’s why it is the 2nd highest paying position

  54. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 8:06 pm

Smart play by Iosia to the back corner. UH wins 25-15.

  55. Maverick September 9, 2016 8:07 pm

    52. Thx.
    53. You took the words right out of my mouth/fingers. High IQ play by Iosia.

  56. Warrior Dave September 9, 2016 8:08 pm

I don’t remember Kalei playing front row but I missed the first two games.

  57. warriorwahine September 9, 2016 8:08 pm

    53. that was awesome. noreen just said you want the ball? have fun with that.

  58. Blunite September 9, 2016 8:09 pm

    Setter is the highest

  59. Bleachercoach September 9, 2016 8:10 pm

I apologize for the inappropriate comment. Just a fan that gets frustrated to see the same mistakes match in match out…I will not express or make opinions on athletes..that’s not fair and right…

  60. Warriorfan September 9, 2016 8:11 pm

sibs way too inconsitent hope she improves.

Looks like UNC will be a number one seed ,would love to be in their bracket!

  61. Maverick September 9, 2016 8:13 pm

Advice to all who are feeling frustrated. Take a deep breath, try to calm down, and then post something. Assume all posts exist into perpetuity. Passion is awesome, but don’t let it overwhelm you. Go Bows!

  62. z September 9, 2016 8:13 pm

Heck I would go to Nikki. 15 kills, .400.

  63. AlexM September 9, 2016 8:14 pm

Our left side hitters are still having problems scoring. What else can UH try? Castillo? Ross? Koelsch? Or, do we just have to wait until Greeley gets better and Mitchem returns?

  64. Maverick September 9, 2016 8:15 pm

    61. Or to the middles, a combined 10 kills and hitting .421

  65. Maverick September 9, 2016 8:18 pm

    62. If you move Castillo to left, then Burns must produce. I understand she is a work in progress. Ross is undersized, and I don’t believe she will be successful against the bigger teams (plus she will be inconsistent…only a freshman). Koelsch has not produced from the left when she was put there. I think we need Mitchem to return so that Castillo can move left. She is doing well and I hope that translates to the outside. Other opinions?

  66. Blunite September 9, 2016 8:19 pm

    WOW

  67. Maverick September 9, 2016 8:21 pm

From the streaming video, I see a table with “Napa Know How” draped over the front. Is that where teams scout matches?

  68. z September 9, 2016 8:23 pm

That’s what I was hoping for more blocks.

  69. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 8:24 pm

    UH up 8-4. TO NIU.
    66. That’s one of the scouting tables. UW is over at the other now.

  70. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 8:30 pm

Castillo in on two blocks, it’s 17-10. TO NIU

  71. Andy September 9, 2016 8:30 pm

Kalei’s hits look like they have some heat tonight, but it’s hard to tell on the live stream. How does it look in person?

  72. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 8:31 pm

    70. has a little more pop but she’s not 100 percent

  73. Blunite September 9, 2016 8:31 pm

Roofs save a lot of time

  74. haleiwacrossfitter September 9, 2016 8:32 pm

Is that Charlie and his son on the end line? His son is adooooorable!!!!

  75. Maverick September 9, 2016 8:36 pm

Regarding the audio on streaming, I wish someone would ask the announcer to use a phrase other than “natural point” or stop reminding us that Kahakai is the second libero on scholarship in UH history. Getting a little old now. Variety is the spice of life.

  76. z September 9, 2016 8:38 pm

    Ross into the net.

  77. Blunite September 9, 2016 8:40 pm

    Replay

  78. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 8:41 pm

very odd ending. replay on the challenge. Koelsch finishes it with 2 aces 25-15

  79. Warriorfan September 9, 2016 8:41 pm

When sibs/granato struggle I would love if Coach Shoji inserted Koelsh at Opp and moved Nikki to the left.

  80. haleiwacrossfitter September 9, 2016 8:44 pm

TV says Castillo only had 1 block. Can’t be right. Who’s taking stats? Or maybe just incorrect input on the tv

  81. Maverick September 9, 2016 8:45 pm

Castillo had 5 blocks per online stats.

  82. uhfan September 9, 2016 8:46 pm

    79. Livestats says 5

  83. warriorwahine September 9, 2016 8:47 pm

notice kendra koelsch served that last ball on purpose for an ace?

  84. warriorwahine September 9, 2016 8:48 pm

    79. yeah tv stats wrong

  85. haleiwacrossfitter September 9, 2016 8:55 pm

    They fixed it. Thx all

  86. T103 September 9, 2016 8:55 pm

Haha that was a classic ‘green card’ objection. Coach asked for one thing, but Denise the down ref saw something else other then the challenge so they replayed the whole thing. I get the ‘challenge’ system, we are trying it out, but unlike olympics, there is one person dedicated to just watching the challenge who allegedly is in some dark room viewing the tapes and doesn’t take that long. Sometimes takes really long but they just testing it out in college. I hope the system can be worked out efficiently for the college level. We be interesting to see the match up on Sunday. Go Bows!

  87. Brandon September 9, 2016 8:57 pm

    78. Kendra isn’t a super effective hitter. I would rather have Ross at OH.

  88. haleiwacrossfitter September 9, 2016 8:58 pm

Castillo cracks me up!! Gotta be cute freshman year, but as a sophomore just comfort. Hilarious

  89. Warriorfan September 9, 2016 9:05 pm

Just realized sundays game starts at 4 after a football game night, yikes those always don’t go well. hope that’s not the case this year ,we need that win over Udub.

  90. LanaiBoy September 9, 2016 9:31 pm

Started a bit slow but a overall a very efficient night for the Bows. By the way, just want to mention the singing of the National Anthem. Two guys sitting next to me made some disparaging remarks tonight. I sort of agree with them though she was not that bad when compared to others. Wish the UH personnel would preview whoever they choose to sing. The worst ones are the ones who tries to add trills and tremolos to the song or go way off key.

  91. darkfire35 September 9, 2016 9:41 pm

    64. Maverick, in the post game show, Castillo said she was more comfortable on the outside. She said she missed “passing”, interesting comment. But when Annie comes back in, Castillo should definitely be on the outside. She’s picked up more finesse moves and seems to be more aware than just blasting away. And yes, that table with the NAPA poster was where the Udub coach was sitting, scoping things out. I think Dave intentionally kept Iosia in and will bring in Higgs to throw off their game. What an advantage to be able to strategically choose between setters to change the game play. GO BOWS!!!!

  92. Warriorfan September 9, 2016 9:44 pm

Hope Dave sticks with Iosia Sunday, she’s just better imo no offense to higgins.

  93. Maverick September 9, 2016 9:52 pm

    90. Thx for the info. I don’t know why she misses passing, she was not very good at it last year, at least on serve receive. I hope she moves left and helps make that position one of strength. Hope Greeley progresses to full strength by season’s end.

  94. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 10:06 pm

90.as mentioned previously, the UW coaches were at the opposite end of the court, the tables have the Extreme Fun, Hawaii Pacific Health and Hawaii Self Storage banners.
we’ll see what happens Sunday. Did ask Shoji if Mitchem would play, he said he had hoped to get her back by then but looking like it will be next week.
BTW, they voted on captains on Wednesday but just found out about them tonight. Higgins and Kahakai were voted co-captains. Taylor will be the floor captain when she’s out there.

  95. Blunite September 9, 2016 10:06 pm

Washington seems to keep their unforced errors to a minimum. Their passing is not up to the net (around 3 meter line); but they shank fewer balls than UH. The setting is mixed (2 setters) not really fast nor high, somewhere in-between. The hitters utilize the soft tip shot effectively and are less erratic than UH. The MBs are quite active but not especially tall (1 tall player). The back row is business-like (not helter skelter). Out of system and they struggle a bit.

Edge to Washington (over Hawaii): fewer mistakes and better blocking.
Key to the match: Get them out of system.

  96. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 10:09 pm

    85. the challenge system isn’t perfect. Thought it was a good challenge by Gooden. If it’s inconclusive they’ll replay it, Since there is no dedicated person off in a booth somewhere, it’s up to the down official so doubt if it will get any quicker.

  97. Cindy Luis September 9, 2016 10:12 pm

    94. disagree a little. Washington made up for poor passing and sets with athleticism and height. plus they were playing USU.
UW had 11 hitting errors. up until Set 3, the blocks were fairly even. UW outblocked UVU 5-1 in Set 3.

Anyway, if you want to come to Saturday’s matches, admission is free BUT they are clearing the arena in between the two matches.

  98. oldtimer808 September 9, 2016 10:21 pm

Well Cindy you sure have a lot of knowledgeable volleyball quarterbacks cough, cough. I’m sure glad Shoji and the other coaches are on top of the game and have all these games experiences for many, many years. Anyway always enjoy reading the blurps in the room.

  99. Ki September 9, 2016 10:32 pm

Love Iosia. Wish she was more offensive but knowing Dave, he probably told her stick to setting.

  100. blunite September 9, 2016 11:19 pm

    @97.
I was going by the Washington website (gohuskies.com) which has Huskies with 13 total blocks to UVU’s 7. Total Errors: Washington 11, UVU 18.

  101. Hot September 9, 2016 11:25 pm

Castillo was a little inconsistent with passing last year, but it wasn’t all bad. Often, Shoji would bring her in cold off the bench and put her in to pass. Almost always, she would shank or get aced on the first pass, but would pass the next serve perfectly. Perhaps she has become more consistent in the offseason and was looking forward to playing all six rotations before the injury to Mitchem forced the coaches to put her in the middle. For an OH playing MB, she’s having a great tournament thus far. 10 kills, 2 errors, 16 attempts, .500, 5 blocks.

  102. haleiwacrossfitter September 9, 2016 11:40 pm

I thought Castillo was a decent passer last year.

She said she misses passing because she feels it resets her after a play and gets more in the groove of the game.

I know this is repetitive, but our lefts will be our doom this year if something is not figured out soon or if Granato/Sibley can’t get more consistent. Castillo/Mitchem/KG could be the answer, but don’t know yet. The only thing I do know is that our lefts are struggling big time. No way we will advance far in the tournament or even win the conference if our leftside is not figured out soon. And I don’t see help coming in next year…as of yet anyway.

The 2027 senior aces just came out this week, Hawaii had zero on that list. Texas was the big winner on this list with the top 2 going their way. You see players at 6-6, 6-8 committing to other programs. We are getting 6″/6’1″. I’m sure it has something to do with the unknown of Dave’s retirement.

I’m really hoping Norene stays when Dave retires. She has often stated he was one of, if not the best, reason she chose Hawaii.

Can’t we just clone Dave and keep him for another 40 years? He will be missed when his time comes.

  103. Maverick September 9, 2016 11:49 pm

    102. HCF, Hawaii has the 95th ranked senior ace, Sophia Howling. She enpven tweeted it. I believe Shaney Lipscomb is in the “just missed” list.

  104. Maverick September 9, 2016 11:59 pm

Not to overly argue the point, but Castillo’s reception percentage was .800 last year. With all the grief TMO was getting last year, she received serve at a higher rate. Only Maglio was worse, and she wasn’t expected to be a passer. At the Div I level, .800 is not good. And respectfully, several players came in off the bench like Castillo to receive serve, and performed over 90% of the time. That being said, I hope she has improved and can be counted on to pass well, like Greeley.

  105. Maverick September 10, 2016 12:01 am

    102. Well, the flip side to getting 6′ players (OHs, specifically) is that they aren’t 5’10”. But your point is well taken, although I’d take another Danielson or Willoughby any day.

  106. Blunite September 10, 2016 12:44 am

Still believe that the left side hitting woes would be “cured” by Iosia’s fast sets. How else does one explain us winning the third set against Wisconsin and taking a 19 – 16 lead in the 4th — without Nikki Taylor and Koesch on the right?

  107. Blunite September 10, 2016 12:50 am

Using the current high sets (with Higgins) we lost the first 2 sets 25 – 13, and 25 – 10 vs Wisconsin.

  108. Blunite September 10, 2016 1:00 am

I saw Washington do a double sub regarding the setter (replacing Finau with Tanner) just like UH. Never saw them use the 6 2. Tanner (at 6’1″) played front row, while Finau (at 5’8″) played BR.

    97. cindy admissions free on saturday?

    99. yeah shoji either has his old ways or perhaps should be just handling setting, itll be nice if she can spike instead of set a couple times including in case of overpass. and if she receives/digs, it be nice if someone attacks the ball anyways without having anyone reset the ball.

    92. noreen sets a faster offense. higgins sets taylor made.

Good news is that Mitchem took swings during warmups before last night’s game. hoping that she can go tomorrow night. would be great psych job on Huskies. move castillo to left and have height all around except for granato.

I hope that granato solves her serving problems. seems like she makes 2 errors per match.

Not sure why coach is not keeping Kendra in her roll like last year. She is a awesome blocker and good setter. She is too valuable to be riding the pine like last night.

NIU is a good team, but flying in just a day before the game and then cramming in a luau suggests that at some level they were treating this tournament less than seriously. They had their one good set against Hawaii and then started to fade. With two matches today, those will be some tired players by the time UW faces them. Not sure what their fan base is thinking, but if they had Hawaii’s fan base, their coach would be in the hot seat.

    Shoji’s evaluations were curious:

–“I thought we passed extremely well, were able to get our middles involved.”
The first set saw a number of poor passes with Iosia running shoot sets off the net to get the middles involved.

    — “maybe she got set too many times early”
Casey Castillo had only 10 sets total, but hit for .400, which was better than NT, MG, and KS.

    — “Maybe we got a little nervous in game 1, but we loosened up.”
Nervous? Over what? Although passing was better latter, NIU’s passing break downs (sending free balls over the net) contributed.

Whatever the case may be, reality will prevail when they play Washington.

    new thread up for Saturday.

    111. They’ve used her as a block sub just like last year. But she is No. 3 on the depth chart at setter.

    112. they were not treating this tournament less than serious. They have a tight budget that, unlike Washington who got here Wednesday, they couldn’t afford to stay longer. They are playing 3 matches in about 24 hours. fly out Sunday morning.

    113. such nit-picking and not in full context. He said Castillo maybe got set too many times EARLY in Set 1 which she was. She successful the first few swings then got blocked which is when Iosia went away from her. the way then she

MAYBE we got a little nervous. about what? who knows but that was his take on it. didn’t elaborate.
