Big plans in recruiting

> Jeezy23: Will there be a big emphasis in cornerback and defensive line for the 2017 recruiting class? It appears that we need an upgrade in speed and cover skills at corner and more physicality on the defensive line to match up with tougher opponents.

Answer: “There’s always an emphasis on recruiting cornerbacks and defensive linemen, as well as linebackers and offensive linemen,” head coach Nick Rolovich said. “I think quarterbacks and kickers are down the line. But always big bodies. We’re always going to recruit O-linemen and D-linemen and, yeah, we need more depth in the secondary.”

> Mike96816: Has true freshman Jeremiah Pritchard jumped ahead of Malachi Mageo and Dany Mulanga at the SLB position?

A: “I would say no,” Rolovich said. “But I love Pritchard, and he’s going to be a great football player for this football team for a long time”

> Letsgowarriors: Status on Marcus Armstrong-Brown?

A: There is a possibility he will join the Rainbow Warriors next year.

> WarriorNY: What does Coach Rolo think of playing the Power 5 conferences?

A: UH favors a balanced nonconference schedule of one Power 5, one FCS and two that are considered equal in budget/skill. The Warriors have limited scheduling flexibility the next few years. “I don’t think we’ll play more than two (Power 5 teams) a year, and hopefully one’s at home. I think our home crowd is good. They seem to enjoy when one of those teams comes to town.”

> Waryor: Are Power 5 teams interested in taking advantage of the Hawaii exemption to play Hawaii one week early?

A: “Yes,” Rolovich said. “The problem is you’ve got to shuffle things around. It’s kind of a puzzle piece, especially in the near future. I don’t know how many options we’ll have next year. But ’18 and moving forward, it’s definitely something we’re looking forward to taking advantage of.”

> Markazulu: Are we still doing a pregame haka?

A: “No,” Rolovich said. “We’re not going to do a haka.”

Oh, wait, that’s a tricky question. The Warriors have been rehearsing a ha‘a. They performed the chant in the tunnel before the Michigan game. They will perform it in front of a crowd when they feel they have fully mastered it.

> Hitmanhart: Why no Melvin Davis on short-yardage plays?

A: Davis was not on the travel roster to Michigan.

> P.Ness: Two games in now, what has Nick Rolovich learned about what it takes to be a head coach?

A: “It stinks to lose, just like it did as a player,” Rolovich said. “I don’t like losing. Ugly? Clean? It doesn’t change the fact we’re 0-2. We’ve got to consistently look for ways to improve.”

> Islandman: Coach Rolovich, do you like laulau?

A: “Yes,” Rolovich said. “I haven’t had a laulau I didn’t like.”

Aloha all you Tsai-kos & Tsai-kettes in the land of Aloha ~

WAHOO! It’s RAINBOW WARRIOR FOOTBALL time.

That means it’s also TGATE time. Mrs. SB & I have reserved Cabana A (same as the last couple of years) at Rainbow Bay Marina for all the home game tgates this year.

Since it’s been many moons since the last tgate, I wanted to remind everybody of the tgate routine.

    The early crew arrive/set-up ~9AM

    The grill crew fires-up ~10-10:30

Bring your own drink and food to share.

Paper products and cutlery will be provided by the set-up crew.

Talk story and eat ono grindz (a.k.a. fuud and fun with friends and family) until clean-up ~1.5 hours prior to the game

Back after the game to finish off food / celebrate the WIN.

Remember, EVERYBODY (locals and visitors) is welcome. It looks like Felix from Germany will be our guest Saturday. He wants to hook up with other rabid UH fans.

Questions – email me at jboster(at)yahoo.com.

It’s going to be a great year. Hope to see everybody there even if it’s after the game.

    Cheers, SailorBlue

  8. WarriorNY September 7, 2016 1:53 pm

Why are the games not streaming this year??? Its kinda a slap in the face to Mainland fans. Does it really incur that much costs to broadcast a stream online???

  9. Maddog50 September 7, 2016 1:55 pm

The MWC or Campus Insider require a stream. According to both teams game notes no stream is being provided. Very pissed

Does it not appeal to recruits, that from the mainland, parents can follow their boys via streaming? Selfishly as an 11 year tsaiko, I am bummed games are not streamed. I can get Frontier Conference and RMAC but can’t follow bows.

  15. st. anthony trojan September 7, 2016 4:18 pm

STREAMING IS PART OF A PLANNED STRAGERTY FOR SALES N MARKETING…..ALONG WITH PROMOS….FOR ALOHA STADIUM….

“H-news n discounts” is the total of all their foresight to get customers in seats…..n to enable friends n relatives of all athletics in all sports to see their loved ones n friends live…..

If you want to see them play…you should have asked them to stay at home n play for the home team…..or just fly to Oahu every weekend they are at home n watch…..

Maybe next week….sumone can ask that question n get a very profound answer…..maybe if Rolo asked he would get n answer ?????

Besides…..there will be many blank periods of the streaming…..what u want them to do…..promote the university n other sports…..or just maybe get a mike n chat with fan….. naw not a good idea…..to much work….. n besides they have enough fans n mucho kala…..they not need more…..stop grumbling you people from adda places…..buy a air ticket n go watch…..

  16. islandman September 7, 2016 5:05 pm

If a mainland viewer pays some cable company can they get the UH games at Aloha Stadium ?

  17. H-Man September 7, 2016 6:39 pm

UT Martin. Got this excerpt from the Hawaii Athletics site – ” The Skyhawks held a 7-6 lead late into the third quarter…UT Martin dominated time of possession (37:06 – 22:54), out-rushed the Bearcats (177 -140) and went 9-of-16 on 3rd down conversions, but were undone by three turnovers and a pair of missed field goals…” This is no pushover coming to town.

  18. WarriorNY September 7, 2016 6:44 pm

Thank Goodness for Bobby Curran and ESPN radio.
It’s free and on time. Sometimes, I just draw up on a napkin
what he’s describing and watch the game unfold.

All the questions and answers were all a joke to lot’s of big fans!. The biggest questions is? When is Rolovich will have the next-generation of Colt Brennan, Timmy Chang and himself Rolovich? Rolovich should sit out Woolsey and put the three quarterbacks in a college game? Maybe one of them could handle it better then Woolsey! Because Woolsey shows that he is not a true quarterback! But a great Wide receiver! . I’m really sorry to put him down. But, I’m a big fan of UH football program. Because in the pass five years since he played in each games with at UH. He didn’t show me anything at all. Maybe that is why former Head Coach Norm Chow got fired! Think about it? What happened if he had it. When Rolovich were the Head Coach beside Chow? Rolovich would be fired and Chow would be the Head Coach!. Remember last year were a lot’s of injury in the starring rotation! Matt was a good quarterback but he was injured. If Woolsey was playing for another university he would be a third quarterbacks in Division one school. But in a division two he might be a two back up!. So that means? We all shouldn’t blame Chow or Rolovich!. Because their all great coaches! But wrong decision of offensive coordinators staffs. On the defensive side it’s really looking forward a brighter side of things to come!. Rolovich really seriously need a offensive minded coach in the high box to tell him what going on the field of play!. Not a offensive linemen or center! I can see Hawaii will be playing 95% running play and 5% passing plays per games with that or coach up there. Remember Rolovich was a offensive coordinators at UNR and where upstairs in the box!. But come down to it he was a quarterback in college and really knows whatever going on the field!. That’s is why? UNR was a great passing school. And Hawaii is not!

You concluded this from the first two games?

Interesting game analysis on your part.

    Go Warriors!

Ohana Hawaii – please have your water checked for lead.

  25. Maddog50 September 8, 2016 1:35 am

Now back to football….certainly hope we have at least 25 to 30k in attendance Sat. The only game in town regardless of opponent. The OVC plays good football, very entertaining, physical with talented players. Saw a lot of that when my son played at Eastern Illinois. A football fan and most certainly a Warrior fan should get out there for the contest-by the way if you haven’t checked out the Football website do it! What a huge difference-Go Warriors!!!

  26. Ohana Hawaii September 8, 2016 5:32 am

Aaron, We are Ohana that lives in Hawaii. Knows that you have never seen a whole season with the University of Hawaii football program!. Even since you were a young age. In the pass the University of Hawaii football program were up there!. Now their are something. If you pay every season on 50 yard line orange seating for your life! If you don’t you shouldn’t saying about it or about the University of Hawaii football program!

  27. Yoshi September 8, 2016 7:57 am

    Huh?

  28. Paniolo September 8, 2016 8:41 am

Alabama head football coach Saban was not satisfied with his starting quarterback in their opener against USC, so what does Saban do? He throws in a freshmen quarterback and the rest of the night was a crushing victory over USC.
With that said, why doesn’t Coach Rolovich throw in a freshmen from his stock of recruited quarterback, and like Saban, Rolo might find his starting quarterback. Yes I am aware Saban has his stock of 4 and 5 stars freshmen verses of what our Warriors has this year, but I truly believe you put any football player on whatever position, his true skills and motivation will show up on the field during game time.
I’m saying an athlete can show what his got during training drills, but put him in game time situation, and you never know what will come out of this.
So Coach Rolo if your reading this, consider another quarterback besides Ikaika. You may find a “Rolovich clone”, or a Colt Brennan clone and maybe a Tim Chang clone in your stock of quarterback.
Also coach, please consider resurrecting the “RUN AND SHOOT” that lighted up Aloha Stadium scoreboard….Coach you did well to light up the Aloha Stadium scoreboard with the RUN AND SHOOT offense….

  29. islandman September 8, 2016 9:22 am

    20. Rolo was on the field when he was OC at Nevada, not in the booth. I saw him on TV.

  30. Shoko September 8, 2016 9:40 am

Rolo use to be in the booth when Ault was coach and in Polian’s first season. He later moved down to the sideline. I assume to get the play calls in faster and to avoid any confusion.

  31. Akamai Okole September 8, 2016 9:52 am

It’s nice to see that after being disavowed and abandoned by both major political parties there has been a new forum for someone to share her views…

    🙄

Question for our newest insightful analyst: Any thoughts on the “KMT” stickers on the helmet?

  33. (Jesse)James September 8, 2016 10:27 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!!

A happy belated B-Day to Tsai!!!

15 years ago today, UH beat Montana 30 – 12 at the War Memorial Stadium on Maui. Timmy passed for 438 yards with 2 TD passes.

Time sure flies. Wish UH would play another game like that on Maui.
