Thursday checkin
Good morning
Don’t be surprised if you see Maglio play 6 rotations. think it’s going to be Koelsch who is libero-d out. had asked Koelsch if she’d be in the passing rotation. she said she didn’t know but was working hard to be the best all-around player she could be.
Although I said yesterday that we’d get a lineup after today’s practice, I’m not sure that will happen. Shoji will have a better idea of what he wants but may not have final decision until after Friday’s walk-through.
They have decided that there will be a video challenge system this weekend. So we’ll see how many challenges are made.
Promotion this week: Tournament-sponsor Chevron will distribute 600 folding fans & 100 collectible toy car Victor E. Vans (kids 10 & under) one hour prior to each UH match. Also, Chevron will award $900 in Chevron gift cards throughout the tournament. Starting one hour prior to each UH match, the first 1,500 fans will receive a 2016 team poster. UH Kids’ Club members are invited onto the court for pre-game festivities on Saturday.
From previous thread
If you would like to contact OCSports regarding lack of streaming call Dan Schmidt at 808-625-8321 or email him at dan.schmidt1@charter.com“
All practices are closed for all teams.
Thanks Cindy for posting the name of the person who can perhaps get the streaming of the matches going again. Call Dan Schmidt at 808-625-8321 or email him at dan.schmidt1@charter.com“. We want streaming!!!
1. good luck. wouldn’t hold my breath.
If we need Maglio’s offense more this weekend to win I wouldn’t mind seeing her hit on the left or right.
Logical decision, if Mags plays back row it means pipes and Ds.
Although Wisconsin is big I’ve always felt that speed offsets height. Regardless of how talented the Wisconsin bigs are no MB can close the block on a 1 second set to the outside.
Alternatively, running double quicks will guarantee one-on-one match-ups. (no double blocks)
Im unclear on whats going on with the streaming situation. I don’t know if its already been mentioned but could someone explain why OCsports no longer stream events.
I think Shoji having hard time trying to get his line up since he hasn’t seen this team in practice all that much and just getting info from his asst is not like seeing with your own eyes.I’m sure these ladies that will start know they have to step up and play their hearts out.
after watching the Olympics, cant wait for the first game
It would be good to review the contract that UH signed with OCSports. Assuming streaming is not required, it can be a lesson for what to include in the next request for proposals for a (hopefully) competitively bid contract.
Even though the Wahine will be start the season with very good personnel, we will be lucky to be 8 and 3 by the start of conference.(IMHO) This will go up or down based on how well the new players with enhanced responsibilities respond. Even with two of our best players down, Shoji has enough bench strength to tinker and fix things. Friday’s game will tell us a lot.
Good idea oneseason. That is one of Ben Jay’s lasting items. I remember Hawaii News Now was pretty irate that UH would not even get offers from other media outlets.
3. she hit some Ds, pipes and on the left in practice yesterday.
6. Shoji received video of practices so it’s not like he came in blind yesterday. He’s not having a hard time. The staff is having a hard time trying to get all the right pieces to fit. There are blocking schemes and passing formations to be considered in each rotation.
7. and others. If you don’t see your comments posted, it may be because you sent duplicate and triplicate comments which triggers the spam filter. Also, if you change your user name and/or email but it’s the same I.P. address, it will go into spam. At least that’s what I’m seeing when I go into the filters.

#8 Well said. I am assuming that matches during Big West Conference play will be streamed as every other conference member is doing it albeit with great differences in quality. I am assuming that the preseason matches are outside of that requirement by the Big West.
So, how much more would it costs OC Sports to stream it? IMO, virtually nothing since there are already televising the match. They have network guys working the match. They have the equipment to put it online. Come on, OC Sports, did you not say you were part of the fabric of Hawaii? Is there any sport more quintessential Hawaii sport than wahine volleyball?
I had contacted Dan Schmidt back in April, and he replied that they had stopped streaming due to “contractual/legal issues”, so unless they resolve those issues, I’m not expecting to be able to watch any of the Wahine VBall home matches live this season.
13 Great we have another Maple Leaf coming to UH for volleyball. Started with Mags and hopefully this will continue down the line.
Thanks for the find Uhfan Lea is 6 feet so nice size to add to the team. What year is she though?
UH also picked up Laurel weaver transfer from ucla I noticed it mentioned on volleytalk.
Jeff hall is building a deep and talented team on the beach!
DS –
My current understanding is that there will no streaming of the UH volleyball tournaments this year, which is very disappointing, and a step down from previous policies.
When I re-connected with UCLA volleyball a decade ago, I really appreciated the way the Hawaii video content was handled, and I cheerfully paid the $3 PPV fee to watch both of each day’s matches. As time went on, I could only watch the Hawaii matches that way, but still used it for their big matches, including UCLA.
Now it seems that OC Sports has gobbled up the rights to everything, but isn’t going to make the content available to anyone outside Hawaii, and won’t exercise the rights to non-Hawaii matches at all. So it isn’t even possible for someone on the mainland to watch their team play, even by paying a PPV or monthly fee. It’s difficult for me to understand why the passage of time into the era of purchased TV/Internet broadcasting rights seems necessarily to result in fewer privileges and options for the fan and viewer.
Even a fixed camera with no announcers would be better than nothing, if you’d consider such a solution.
Thanks for your time.

I wrote a note to Dan Schmidt today about the streaming situation and received a kind response as follows:
“I’m afraid that, for the time being, the OC Sports telecasts of Rainbow Wahine Volleyball will not be streamed…at all. Not to our customers in Hawai’i…and not to others on the mainland and elsewhere.
We recognize that this decision will not sit well with many out-of-market fans (and family), and it hasn’t been made without considerable thought. However, the technological solutions to the present business environment have not been easily implemented, and that dictates that we not distribute via live video streaming. Although we were hoping to have everything in place before the season, we have encountered a number of hurdles that we continue to work through.
To answer your next question…no, I don’t know when this situation will be resolved. But rest assured that we deal with it every day in order to find the way to deliver the product without damaging our business model.”
It is difficult to understand exactly what the issues are (and I don’t pretend to know the details of their business model), but I want to thank Dan for responding and hope OCSports is able to find a solution in the near future.
Hall has been busy. but just remember these are only verbals.
20. thanks. I hadn’t heard back from him.
my understanding is it has something to do with being sold to another entity.
With the streaming situation, I anticipate the blog will have less activity on game nights than last year, which is a real shame. We were building a very good online community here. I’ll have to wait until a YouTube video is posted before commenting, if such postings continue as in years past–listening to radio broadcasts is not the same as watching.
To clarify – the previous was a copy of my e-mail to DS at OCS. And … as a retired computer professional it’s also difficult for me to understand what “technological solutions to the present business environment” means, or how it can prevent them from doing what they did well as long as 10 years ago.
23. This blog has been around with and without streaming. So I’m not anticipating any less participation. We have people commenting who are in the arena. There is a good community of knowledgeable fans and I appreciate the input and conversations.
I thought it was a requirement by the big west conference to provide a free live stream even at the worst lowest quality ( like cal poly and other big west schools)
i know Uh streams softball and womens basketball with no announcers and at low quality hope they do the same for mainland fans thst wont be able to watch on tv.
25. If so, it probably won’t be OCSports providing it, but some basic stream from UH. But this won’t help us when it comes to the huge non-conference matches–I believe the requirement is for conference matches.
Further to this streaming situation, maybe posters familiar with Comcast can comment on its original/ marketplace programming. As in, does it generate video or mainly serve as a conduit?
Also, the point about Big West video: if as contractholder for broadcast coverage keeps Oceanic/TWC/Comcast from having to comply, what about UHM itself? Like others are saying, a single, fixed camera isn’t great, but it’s better than no feed at all.
Wonder why we don’t see more ad’s on UH sports. Hope they have a large crowd tomorrow night. ( At least 7000)
I also received the same generic response from OCSports, however it was nice of them to respond. But why don’t they just request that any one that would like the service pay whatever it is that would make it fesable for them to continue to live stream. 16 Burns is also a Maple Leaf:)
The only streaming recently was a booster steaming wahine softball from the softball stadium last spring.
I think Cindy might be correct, as Charter now owns Oceanic. This may alao be the reason that high school broadcasts that were available live for years on the OC16 website are only available locally now.
25 I seem to remember that last season, UH did step in and provide a stream for some of the Wahine Basketball conference games, but only those that OC wasn’t televising. Likewise for Softball where the booster club streamed most of the home games, but didn’t for the last Senior Day series which I believe OC also televised but didn’t stream. My impression was that if OC had the TV rights, UH nor anyone else could stream it, even conference games. I hope someone else with a better memory can step in and correct me if I’m wrong, and I hope I am as I think OC is televising all of the Wahine Volleyball home conference matches. At least we’ll be able to watch their road matches, albeit in low quality.
28. not sure what you mean about more ads. On TV, on radio, in the newspaper?
wow, so much disarray at this late juncture.
GO Emily!
I can’t believe Charter acquired TWC. I hoped it would be the other way around. Since I moved from Hawaii almost a year ago, I’ve had Charter. It is horrible. It’s as if they are 10 years behind everything I had with Oceanic. To top it off they are more expensive.
Did talk to Schmidt. as he has told others, they are trying to work things out and hopes to do so in a timely manner. They’ve had discussions with the Big West already.
Practice is over.
Shoji said he is not ready to announce his lineup. Has more discussions with his staff.
34 Fully agree with you. The only thing I like about Charter is their internet service. “I cut the cord” and now get all my TV off the air and via online services for much cheaper.
35 Thanks for the update, Cindy. Sounds like there’s still hope for this season.
Last year after moving to the mainland 20 years ago I really got into Wagine volleyball again by watching online. So much so that I’m flying to Hawaii for a tournament. Sad that those will be one of the few games I see all year, as I won’t be able to travel even locally this fall. What makes volleyball so addicting to me is being able to see the girls’ faces up close and the feeling that you’re getting to know them all year.
39. of course there’s hope. why wouldn’t there be? they may struggle until getting Taylor, then Mitchem back but they should be fine. It is unfortunate that they aren’t at full strength for the tournaments.
42. Oops. I meant to reply to your #38 post where you updated us on your reply from Schmidt and told us they’ve already had discussions with the BW, which I found hopeful. Sorry for the typo.
Got the same generic reply from OC Sports. There are enough “stuff” in the response that you are not sure if the issue is contractual, technical, business or a blend of them all. First, I appreciate the fact that Dan told the time out to reply. Second, I truly hope that he is working on it. Lastly, we need to press the university on what the heck they are doing to support the alumni and fans – or don’t ask for any more donation. Go get it fix!
Has anyone said it yet: “OCCUPY OCSports!”
The whole Occupy thing made popular among VB fans years ago by Mick Haley’s “OCCUPY NCAA” when yet another ridiculous bracket came out. Does anyone remember what year? I think that’s when we lost to SC in 5 in the semfinals of the regional that we hosted. SC went on to play Pepperdine? Pepperdine defeated Kansas State to reach that Regional Final. Kansas State w/Kuulei Kabalis defeated Nebraska to get to Hawaii? Did I mix my years and regionals up?
It was 2011 – I remember because my Bruins went under the radar all the way to the title, and I was in Malibu on Thurs when Pepperdine beat Mo. St. and UNC surprised Cal, only to be beaten the next night while I went to UCLA’s round-of-64 matches. And after USC Shoji was quoted as saying (sarcastically) “that was a pretty good match between the 7th and 10th best teams in the country”.
45. you have the right regional
things have gotten a little long. have put up new thread with a couple new items including Arizona’s arrival.
