Rolo picks QB, announcement to come

And the pick is in.

Nick Rolovich has selected the No. 1 quarterback for the season opener, but will delay the public announcement until after meeting with the players this afternoon.

“I want to talk to the guys,” Rolovich said after this morning’s 2-hour practice at the Ching Athletic Complex. “I’d rather the team know first. We’ll get it out as soon as we get everyone understanding what the situation is.”

Ikaika Woolsey, who is widely considered the top contender, threw a 31-yard scoring pass to Marcus Kemp in the team session today. He was 3-of-3 for 49 yards.

Aaron Zwahlen and Dru Brown also had strong outings.

“Credit to all three of them,” Rolovich said. “They’ve shown good ability, good attention to detail within the offense, and good desire. … They made (the decision) hard on us.”

Although I believe IW will be named the starter, I would like someone new at the qb position. Good luck on whoever the starter is and bring us sum W’s!!

We would be shocked if it weren’t Woolsey.
By the way, don’t judge him on the past few years and those crazy systems. This offense is more diverse — and entertaining.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

I suspect IW to be the man. Time to get busy for the Bears.

    Go Warriors!!
3-Prong, someone brought back date bars from KTA recently. Tasted good and something different. Also, the dried opelu at the Kona KTA is good too. Hope you can stop at the Manago Hotel for the fried pork chops.

It will likely be IW which is a disappointment…However, I’m sure there will be a quick hook if he fails to move the offense or makes stupid mistakes. Frankly, I think we’re limited with IW, as he doesn’t have the arm strength for the deeper throws to keep the defense honest.

Too bad, I really think we have a chance at upsetting Cal, but it will take a good QB with leadership skills to pull us through.

Pointless to tell people not to judge, they already decided. Just like they said Dan Robinson won’t do well under Jones because he didn’t do well under Von Appen. We’ll find out soon enough.

  11. NotNasti August 18, 2016 11:49 am

I’d rather we win with the person I didn’t want starting, than vice-versa.

  12. truegreen August 18, 2016 11:56 am

…than start with the person you didn’t want winning?

  13. H-Man August 18, 2016 11:59 am

ST, we shouldn’t judge Ikaika on his past performance, but that’s all we have to go on right now. With 6:30 a.m. practices and the last week of practice and Aloha Stadium scrimmage closed to the public, very few of the fans (me included) have had an opportunity to see the offense in action. 7 on 7 drills does not reveal very much. I suppose Rolo felt a need to maintain secrecy regarding his offense in order to gain a step over Cal. But it’s a knife that cuts both ways. The fan base has been shielded, but it appears season ticket sales are not up to expectations.

I sure hope you are right ST about this offense be more entertaining. I like to watch our team win that’s for sure. But when we lose and are painfully boring in the process it becomes too much to bear. It seems it was too much to bear for many many people when I looked around an empty and moribund aloha Stadium over these last years.

Regardless of the coach’s decision, Ikaika Woolsey survived the dark days of the previous system. With new coaching, I look forward to seeing him (and all the QB) play this year.

  16. oldtimer808 August 18, 2016 12:36 pm

I’m excited with the direction the team has taken under Rolo. I think whoever starts at qb will do well. I recall the dark days after the VonAppen losing season and the turn about the next season under Coach Jones using almost the same players. In 1963 Aiea High School’s first varsity football season was a no win season 0 to 8. The next year Aiea won all their games and lost to Kailua for their only loss. It’s all in the attitude of the players and the belief in the system. Rolo has created a culture that will sustain itself.

New season. New coach. New offense. It’s reasonable to assume the Warriors most other teams are a work in progress at this time of the year.

If it is Ikaika, best of luck and fortune to him. Same for the whole team, starters and bench. Just be as ready as you can be.

All will be revealed on Friday, regardless of whoever starts. I have faith.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    Warriors and*

Whoever the starting QB is, gotta trust the coaches in their decision. New year, new staff! If it is Ikaika, gotta give him the chance as he is a survivor of how many OCs, etc. and he was Rolo’s recruit. Hopefully in his senior year he will show the maturity of taking care of the ball.

    Let’s go Bows!!!

    oldtimer808 @#16 –

“Rolo has created a culture that will sustain itself.” I like that. Very much. I agree.

    Woolsey it is!

    Haka can breath now.

  22. Tempmanoa August 18, 2016 1:28 pm

Rolo as a player here went from starter who struggled to the bench, but came back in his second chance at starting to spectacular results. Hope that can happen with Ikaika if he is the one.

    Whew!

At this point every body has believed in Rolovich so far, I think it would be completely detrimental to the team to start second guessing him. I believe in possitive decision he has made in turning this program in the right direction as well as his players.

    GO WARRIORS!!!
