Saturday checkin U.S. men vs. France

Practice started a little later, at 10 a.m. Only one practice today, pretty normal for the first week. They have Sunday off. Think there’s some team activities involved, may include the beach.

Mitchem has begun her bone-healing protocol, diet includes antioxidants like blueberries and no antiinflamatories.

as mentioned on previous thread. I would not consider Mitchem injury prone. she has had two injuries in her playing career, last year’s pinke and this year’s pinkie.
it was just another freak accident. ball wasn’t hit hard but it just hit at a bad ankle.

US men up 1-0 on France. Were down 17-10 in Set 1, took the lead at 20-19 and closed it out 25-23.

Don’t recall it mentioned before regarding Natasha Burns, what is exactly the problem that’s keeping her from practice.

I am hoping – upon hope – that Mitchem can play this year. Nevertheless, I am personally much more about student athletes completing their education. It would be a huge loss to the team if Annie does not play this year. However, we do have Castillo and Burns, both who were MH in high school. They will need to step it up in a hurry. And yes, a medical red-shirt is not a guarantee, but its would seem more reasonable that Annie may be granted one especially since the injury is real. Annie would come back stronger and it would give her another extra year to earn the necessary credits to graduate. Next year’s team is going to need all the firepower it can get with Taylor graduating.

    1. you didn’t miss it regarding Burns. The only thing we have been told (HIPA restriction) is she is not cleared to practice. She is participating in non contact drills, warmups, cool downs and stretches. Both she and Mitchem did weight room work during the majority of today’s practice.

    2. the goal is to have her ready to play this season.

U.S. men win in 4 but because it’s on tape-delay, didn’t want to spoil it in the headline.

on previous thread someone mentioned Trinity Castaneda committing for 2018. Had posted it here on June 8 about her club tweeting it out and misspelling her last name.

Don’t think we will see much of Burns as she already missed one week of practice an not sure when she will return.
Looks like it will be Mags and Castillo.

    Re#6
If Burns cannot play for whatever reason, who will provide the depth at middle?

  8. Cubicle1126 August 14, 2016 8:40 am

if burns in unavailable, and mitchem out for up to 6 weeks… then i’m guessing, the 3rd middle might have to be sibley … after mags and castillo …

    8. haven’t seen Sibley in the middle yet. with Greeley slowed after her surgery, Sibley been used on the outside. She’s also Taylor’s backup at opposite.
For practice they only need one middle per side.
Koelsch cane be used as OH in an emergency but Hall said that would be only as a last resort.

With these setbacks, the looming preseason matches are starting to look really daunting. We may have to take a few initial lumps in preseason but am confident that we will be stellar in postseason once Mitchem returns and Greeley regains full strength. The bright side is that Castillo, Burns, Sibley and perhaps Koelsch at OH will get lots of valuable play time to show what they can do, which may prove invaluable in post season.
