Neil and Beil … Be there, aloha!

Hawaii sports fans get a double dose of aloha this week as Larry Beil joins Neil Everett on SportsCenter Los Angeles, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Beil is taking a few days off from his duties as sports director at KGO-TV in San Francisco to team with Everett for the first time as a vacation reliever for Stan Verrett. Everett and Beil were both popular sportscasters in Hawaii who became nationally known as ESPN SportsCenter anchors.

“I don’t think we ever did a show together in Bristol so this should be fun,” Beil said. “We are going to have lots of 808 references, li’dat!”

The show airs at 7 p.m. Hawaii time, and repeats later in the evening.

Both eventually rose to sports director at KGMB-9 in Hawaii.

Beil graduated from the University of Hawaii. He left the islands for ESPN where he was a SportsCenter anchor from 1996 to 2001. He has been in San Francisco since.

His home run call of “Aloha means goodbye” became a late-90s catchphrase for sports fans.

Everett, who has been at ESPN since 2000 and in Los Angeles since 2009, was sports information director at Hawaii Pacific University in the 1980s and is a member of the HPU Hall of Fame. Prior to KGMB, he worked at KHNL.

“You could basically say Steph Curry is responsible for this,” Beil said.

During the Golden State Warriors’ 2014-15 championship run, Everett spent a lot of time in the Bay Area covering the team. Since KGO and ESPN both fall under the ABC umbrella, Beil’s station worked with the ESPN crews at Oracle Arena. Everett and Beil got together for lunch and came up with the idea of Beil as an occasional backup on SportsCenter Los Angeles.
