Touching all bases

The nine assistant coaches begin their second week on the road, recruiting in their non-Hawaii base areas. (The NCAA prohibits head coaches from in-school visits during this evaluation period.)

The Warriors’ non-Hawaii base areas are:

> American Samoa

> Australia

> Bay Area

> Southern California

> Fresno

> Las Vegas

> Washington

> Oregon

> Utah

> Arizona

The Warriors still will recruit in other geographical areas. (They are in the running for a Midwest lineman.) And they have had success on the Mainland outside of the Pacific and Mountain time zones. Since 2012, they netted two starters from Ohio (Paul Harris, Taylor Graham) and did well in Texas (of the four Texans who signed with UH, only tight end Ethan Watanabe departed the program prematurely).

But in recruiting, like real estate, it’s all about location, location, location.

UH’s success rate — signings minus departures and medical retirements — is strongest when nearest.

Here’s a look at UH’s retention rate for recruits (including recruited walk-ons) since 2012:

> California — 41 players, two departed before eligibility expired, 3 medical hardships.

> Utah — 10 players, 1 departure, 1 medical

> Florida — 10 players, 5 departures, 1 medical

> Arizona — 4 players

> Texas — 4 players, 1 departure

> Washington — 3 players

> American Samoa — 3 players, 1 departure

> Ohio — 2 players

> Oregon — 2 players

> Louisiana — 2 players, 1 departure

> North Carolina — 2 players, 1 departure

> Colorado — 1 player

> Las Vegas — 1 player

> Nebraska — 1 player

> Oklahoma — 1 player

> Kansas — 1 player, 1 departure

> Maryland — 1 player, 1 departure

> Memphis — 1 player, 1 departure

> New Jersey — 1 player, 1 departure

> Virginia — 1 player, 1 departure

> Massachusetts — 1 player, 1 departure

Anyone watch Leahey and Leahey this weekend with JJ? Did he say that UH hasn’t recruited Kapolei since he’s been there? Not sure what was said but if he did, it kinda sounds like he sour…. Didn’t they offer Tauila? and didn’t the coaches go to every school in the state? Hope JJ not too sour after being overlooked for the UH job.

Most of the east coast recruits was during the chow era. When Chow became head coach he didnt do his homework. ex. recruiting heavily on the east coast when everybody knew that culture shock and homesickness would be great. Another example is with the offense that he wanted to install which was a pro set offense where he needed huge offensive linemen. Previous coaching staff’s knew that getting the blue chip lineman was very hard to do. I’m very optimistic and excited with coach Rolo, he knows his homework.

  6. letsgowarriors May 9, 2016 8:42 am

technically Graham is from Illinois right?

  7. Ipu Man May 9, 2016 9:10 am

    Why only “American” Samoa?
    Why not its neighbor Samoa?
    And why only Australia?
    Why not Africa?
    Also for basketball 🙂

  8. mileHIwarrior May 9, 2016 9:17 am

Would love to see if the staff can come and recruit Colorado. Could use more players like Ben Clarke on the line.

Success in W’s or retention rate for recruits – prefer the W’s- Will still need them from where ever they come from. Send them coaches to South Africa and the Middle East, they just might find a diamond in the r….

  11. legistlature May 9, 2016 9:38 am

Send one coach to the North Pole and the other to the South Pole, let’s make sure we cover the earth

what is the breakdown for Hawaii recruits.

Even in the Mack Era we’ve had Hawaii recruits leave the team, be dismissed or medically retire

  14. BigWave96744 May 9, 2016 10:35 am

Darrick Branch has been doing football camps in China.

Hundreds comes out, some driving 6+hours just to be there.

Basketball is even more crazy, some places have 50 open courts, all packed with guys wanting to play next.

UH should play a football or Bball game in Shanghai. Build a fan base, because as the Pake Man says, “In the end, we are all Chinese”

  15. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2016 10:49 am

I’m pretty sure every offense needs huge linemen.

  16. Stephen Tsai May 9, 2016 10:56 am

The NCAA restricts recruiting dates; budget and resources restrict recruiting reach. You can’t recruit the world. You need to focus on certain areas and connections. I mean, Jennifer Garner is single; it doesn’t mean you can date her.

  17. warriorsanddolphins May 9, 2016 11:10 am

June would recruit tweener offensive linemen. Tall lanky athletes with long arms for his passing offense. There he would put them on a weight gaining program.

  18. legistlature May 9, 2016 11:16 am

You can’t recruit the world because = we don’t have enuff scholarships to offer them.

Budget & resources restrict recruiting reach=we are limiting our abilities “Y”

    Certain areas= Wow unreal
Dating isn’t that an NCAA violation

  19. Rodney May 9, 2016 11:22 am

    Question if Rolo doesn’t
produce in 3-4 yrs(Hope he does) would not JJ be the guy?
    Go bows!!!

  20. Pupule May 9, 2016 12:17 pm

    Mauiwarrior…

It’s not so much you stole my thunder. It just seems next time I need to be as fast as lightning to get in before you ! E Malama Pono !

ST – I didn’t know Jennifer Gardner was single. Can I get her number from you? I have an extra season ticket to UH football for her, right next to mine.

Then I have to tell my brother I gave away his ticket……

  22. NotNasti May 9, 2016 12:38 pm

    #20: Pupule
Before you go all “hashtag” on Jennifer Gardner, you should know that ST was talking about Jennifer Garner, not Gardner. Garner being the ex-Mrs. Ben Affleck, and Gardner, well . . .

  23. Dan-O May 9, 2016 12:47 pm

    Re: mauiwarrior

JJ said he’s been out with the Kapolei kids for a few weeks, and is surprised that about 3-4 kids have NOT been offered D-1 scholarships. No names though….

  24. burro sabio May 9, 2016 1:13 pm

    1) I want Rolo to win, period.
    2) In 3 or 4 years JJ will be like 105 years old, not ideal coaching material. And before anyone says I can’t add he will actually be like 67, still not ideal coaching material for the long term. Stop planning for the future by looking to the past.
    JMHO.

Yes there are very good players on many teams thru out the state. JJ is just looking at one. If he were to look at other teams he probably would find others. I do think that JJ has a good eye for talent.

  28. mauiwarrior May 9, 2016 2:38 pm

Thanks Dan-O, so he was just trying to get more exposure for the kids…..

  29. NorthShoreFan May 9, 2016 2:51 pm

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
for what ever reasons, Hawaii has always been late or out of touch with our best athletes. be it football, basketball, baseball or what ever sports. not sure why this is but….
if you talking limited recruiting budget, then you would think the programs would be reaching out to our D1 athletes. after they leave, then it’s like…why didn’t they get recruited by Hawaii?….

  30. hwnstyll May 9, 2016 3:21 pm

Please show me the last time JJ offered 3 kids from one public school thats not Kahuku, probably not even there either.

  31. al May 9, 2016 3:34 pm

19…in 2 years JJ will be on Medicare. What’s the incentive?

  32. AllG May 9, 2016 4:37 pm

We had some good times with JJ but you guys gotta move on! He is too old now to hire as a HC and will be way too old in 3-4 years if Rolo doesn’t work out. Rolo is a great coach and wants nothing more then to make this State proud. Show him some support and stop worrying about JJ. You can go watch Kapolei games if you have such a burning desire to watch his offense.

  33. legistlature May 9, 2016 5:35 pm

    Rolo is a great coach—???
Me predict Kapolei makes it to OIA title game unless the power’s that be, move them to DII because of this proposed SUPER TEN. (are we trying to mimic the big boys in college football)

  36. Tempmanoa May 9, 2016 6:29 pm

Good college teams get most of their players close to home– many within a one day drive. And the best teams are in areas with a lot of talent within a one day’s drive of the school. In fact, the closer you are to the talent pool, the better the team year in and year out. Players and their families like being close to home and coaches like good access to players which makes for identifying more talent, and better evaluation and decisions on offers.

  37. A-House May 9, 2016 7:44 pm

    #35:

looks like Alabama will get 2 of the top lineman and nation’s best RB from California plus one “pupule” guy from Hawaii.

  38. cappie the dog May 9, 2016 7:59 pm

The departure from North Carolina; that’s the Duke transfer who decided to major in theater, right?

  43. legistlature May 9, 2016 9:14 pm

Game would have to be played on Saturday at 2pm Hawaii time
It can happen with Alabama donors paying off HHSA & those $$ used for AC Units at public schools

    A good one…..
    Chow was a gamble
it was his first HC job too.
So I’m just saying if Rolo
    don’t work out…I hope
    JJ would be available !!
    Go bows!!!!

  50. seewhy May 10, 2016 9:52 am

The coaching staff is really working hard during this recruiting period. Mad props to them.

  51. seewhy May 10, 2016 9:58 am

Hawaii are 22.5-point underdogs against Cal in the season opener. Per 5Dimes.

  52. oneseason May 10, 2016 12:41 pm

Under coach Chow, it seemed that UH played competitively against early preconference opponents. Whether that was due to UH or their opponent’s preparation, I don’ know. But it doesn’t seem unreasonable to hope that coach Rolovich and staff can boost the odds a bit more and lead UH to an upset over Cal.

  53. H-Man May 10, 2016 1:10 pm

Cal lost four of their top five receivers to graduation and the No. 1 draft pick in Goff. Does UH have a chance? You bet.
