UH football: DL commits, practices closed this week
UH football notes:
> Josaiah Maama, a defensive lineman from King’s Academy (Sunnyvale, Calif.), has made a verbal commitment to play for the Warriors in 2017. He is 6 feet 5 and 260 pounds. San Jose State and UNLV also made offers. Maama has relatives who live in Hawaii.
Here’s his highlight video: Josaiah Maama
> There were 46 high school players who attended the Warriors’ Junior Day yesterday. That doesn’t include an Aiea youth team that visited.
> According to reports, cornerback Nick Nelson is transferring to Wisconsin. UH could have denied releasing Nelson to Wisconsin, UTEP or any school on the Warriors’ schedule through the remainder of his college career. Daronte Jones, who recruited Nelson to UH, was at Wisconsin last year before accepting a job with the Miami Dolphins. Tom Mason, who was UH’s defensive coordinator last year, is now UTEP’s DC. Without a release, a transferring player would need to wait a year before being placed on scholarship. UH officials said they granted Nelson a full release to transfer to Wisconsin.
> Coach Nick Rolovich said practices on Tuesday and Thursday will be closed. The Warriors’ spring fling is set for Friday at Ching field.
Rolovich continues to show class by giving Nick Nelson a full release from his scholarship.
Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
wanted to check out yesterday’s work out but family commitments. went to softball and saw the Aiea kids there and a few Tsaikos and JD and kind of shy.
good to hear coach let Nelson go. he can get his school paid for. its about education and football. good luck to him.
spring fling finale set for 11 am?
Does UH have a shot to land Tua?
Re#3: Hawai’i has a 1 in 6 chance of landing Tua but I think it’ll be Bama in the end who gets the benefit of his services…
Re#2: the spring finale is set for Friday starting at 5pm
To me, it also makes sense to approve transfers when you are trying to rebuild the program. It shows confidence; you don’t need to hold a student’s eligibility hostage to succeed.
Maybe more importantly, this encourages new signings; it demonstrates to students and their parents that the UH and Coach Rolovich sincerely respects and appreciates the risk that they are taking in signing on at this time.
the way the rules are, it’s supposed to keep the kids in school but to allow them to transfer with the help of coaches should be the norm. kids make hasty decisions. kids are attracted to bight lights all the time. time to allow kids to change their minds without penalty.
it’s good to know, for the keiki of Hawaii the scholarships are there. we should offer every talented athlete, no matter what sport. I hear too many people talk about how the kids were snubbed by our programs. Then again, the peeps should be giving our coaches the heads up on potential.
my take on the newest commit:
plays nasty, but “dirty” by throwing smaller players to the ground – he got flagged on one play – on another play he gave the blocking back a right forearm which sent him sprawling.
will he be able to do the same with D1 players? they will be as big or larger and stronger than high school opponents
JMHO!
sunshine, sunshine, where art thou??
clouds, wind, and rain has continued to plague the valley – good for watering the plants, but not so good for the solar and PV systems
weather person on KITV said lost of sunshine – oh, he was referencing the Leeward side of Oahu!!!!!!!
Warrior Dave:
your summer fishing plans complete?
Masaboy and I will be at Anchor Point in mid-July.
any Tsaiko interested in buying season tickets for $100? — got an extra set
I would think Wisconsin would be nice except for late autumn and winter. Ever watch the weather channel in the winter. The map of Wisconsin is always covered in white.
Closed practices this week? Hmmmm… are you smellin’ what the Rollo is cookin’? 😉 Friday night is gonna be great fun!
The Nelson transfer shows what a genuinely good guy Rollo is. What comes around goes around.
As for the big recruit, I am sure the UH coaches can cut a diamond out of the rough. Glad he’s coming to UH for polishing – he has a lot of upside.
GO WARRIORS!!!
To add the discussion about Maama, two things: I hope he honors his verbal and that he CAN throw guys around the way he does in his highlights. A beast mode player who puts biblical scripture on his highlight film sounds like a quality recruit to me.
A house I would be interested in those season tickets
With the full release and Nelson successfully transferring, does that open up a scholarship for the year? Can UH give out another initial, if necessary?
Too bad Maama can’t play this upcoming season we could use him. We need to keep bringing in DL. Hope he stays true to his commitment NLI day is a loooong ways away.
DPK:
understand your opinion, but I believe if you grab another player with 2 hands and purposely throw him to the ground calls for 15 yds unsportsmanlike conduct — was not a UH player who did that last year flagged for 15 yards? — don’t recall who it was.
aggression yes, but it has to be controlled
#16 — call me at work – 592-5012 and ID yourself
A-House,
Alaskan fishing is definitely on my to do list. However the cost is a bit steep for this year, especially since we’re going to Sydney in August. Hopefully one day soon.
You and Masaboy going have an awesome time. Can’t wait to hear your stories.
# 19 – Colonel A-House – I think that depends when the whistle blows. Also, Maama plays both ways, so it might be hard to tell from his highlights.
Is it too late to cancel the Cal-Berkeley game?
Ideally, I would like the first season to be loaded with body bags and save the Oahu Bowl from extinction. Hawaii needs to get there.
Any idea if the scrimmage on Friday will be streamed on the internet?
#23 I think the Oahu Bowl died a long time ago. Last I checked it was called the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl
A House is it okay to give you a call at work today,I just saw your response this morning
Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
condolences to the Werner family. Lost a Warrior. I wonder if he had post HS aspirations to continue his football career.
No harm in letting Nick Nelson transfer to Wisconsin or UTEP. UTEP is not on our schedule and Wisconsin is not until 2022.
