Bulk pickups

It is perhaps time for UH media relations to use “after” pictures for the football team’s online roster.

Linebacker Malachi Mageo, defensive end David Manoa and offensive tackle Matt Norman have gained weight β€” and expanded roles.

Mageo has transformed from a skinny safety to a sturdier strong-side linebacker. He was the No. 1 strong-side linebacker the past three practices after Dany Mulanga incurred a leg injury.

Manoa has been a pleasant surprise at defensive end, using his quickness as both a pass rusher and run stopper. In yesterday’s scrimmage, he was able to pin running back Diocemy Saint Juste, who has one of the quickest one-cut moves on the team.

Norman was recruited and redshirted last year with the intent of spending a year to gain weight and strength. It has paid off, with Norman now getting solid second-team reps in practice. He is projected to be in the line rotation this season.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
    Good to see progress.
Also would like it if they had a complete roster of all Warriors. Active, red shirts, walkons, scouts etc…

  3. Da Punchbowl Kid April 17, 2016 9:00 am

    First!

  4. Da Punchbowl Kid April 17, 2016 9:03 am

First to to be third. Good coaching will always find the diamonds in the rough.

  5. Da Punchbowl Kid April 17, 2016 9:09 am

I remember the day Manoa was hurt – watched practice that day. Nice to see him bounce back because his injury was bad one IIRC.

Solomon Matutia looks like he’ll be another good LB down the road.

  6. bowwar April 17, 2016 9:22 am

Hope springs eternal…I hope these Warriors show constant improvement till the opening game…

  7. bowwar April 17, 2016 9:26 am

    Bring Back the Warrior…

I think Rolo needs to revitalize the “mojo” around the team. We need another Warrior Mascot…It won’t be Vili, but we should be able to get another Warrior from the Polynesian Cultural Center or just have an open try-out…

Also, we need to bring back the music of Ten Feet and the song: Hawaiian Warrior…One of the things we miss from the June Jones era is the “Warrior Attitude” that surrounded the team. Bring back BLACK unis and that “chip on our shoulders”…The fans will embrace it and we’ll start the revival of the football program accordingly. Return to Pride Rock!

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

Always good to see DPK’s comment.

“From the Tree”comments are always on point!

  9. H-Man April 17, 2016 9:39 am

Got these on the internet under the topic – Hawaiian Petroglyph (carving or inscription on a rock):
    RAINBOW MAN
Found at Nuuanu, Oahu, the arc of the rainbow resting on the shoulders of a person has a special significance to the Hawaiian people – a symbol of each individual’s responsibility to shoulder the task of protecting the land, the “aina”.
    WARRIOR
Found at Puako, Hawaii, the “Warrior” is generally considered to be a depiction of man with a gourd helmet, a soldier.

  10. Stephen Tsai April 17, 2016 9:42 am

    Bowwar:
I might be wrong, but I don’t think Vili and his wife live in Hawaii anymore.
It appears they might be living in Lubbock.

  11. amela April 17, 2016 10:04 am

Someone said they were a little worried about the receivers getting open a lot on long passes against the defense, finally.

The previous staff didn’t utilize David Manoa. DE to TE to ??? When Naeole took over & moved him back to DE, David closed the season with a lot of spark & promise. Great guy with a really positive attitude.

  14. kahuna April 17, 2016 11:28 am

UH don’t need to concern themselves with trivial thing like mascots. Schools don’t win game due to mascots.

Our women’s vball team never had a mascot and we are perennial contenders. Our bball didn’t have have any mascot and we won over 20 games these past years.

Bottom line is to just win. Mascot does not make the team better nor does it want me to buy season tickets so having a mascot should be very low on the priority list.

  15. BigWave96744 April 17, 2016 11:30 am

Hope we can continue the Euless Trinity Pipeline. Need more like Dany Mulanga

  16. BigWave96744 April 17, 2016 11:32 am

Norm tried 2 different Vili like mascots. Didn’t last more than a few games

  17. A-House April 17, 2016 11:46 am

I favor the idea of a “mascot” of some kind or a symbol — it’s a tangible to cling to and spark pride for those who wish it to be so

UH teams that produce winning seasons continuously – what makes this so? anyone ask the players? maybe a good starting point for the Kaleo — student to student relationship

many “out-of-state” players continue to say that the “people of Hawaii” are the special ingredient — the warmth and kindness they received without regard to who they were or where they were from — all we know is that they chose to represent Hawaii!!!

  18. A-House April 17, 2016 11:49 am

rain has returned to the valley — water the plants — save the planet

anyone notice the “drying out” of pine trees lining the left side of Nuuanu Valley, mauka bound? lack of rain creating a fire hazard to homes atop the ridge — past 3 days it did rain, but don’t believe it’s enough to revive them

  19. A-House April 17, 2016 11:54 am

recent incident in Moiilili really put a damper on the rise of the football team

did this increase/minimize the “positive” vibes flowing from Manoa Valley? what can be done to reverse the “lack luster” interest in football?

BTW, what the heck is the responsibility/ duties of the UH Sports Information Director? not looking for his job description.

  20. legistlature April 17, 2016 1:49 pm

?what’s Dany Mulanga stats been, any scoops on why we need more like him
Is he an impact player if so, what game did he make a solid contribution.
    Go Get um Dany…

  21. bowwar April 17, 2016 2:08 pm

#10 ST: We don’t need Vili…Let him enjoy Lubbock…We have LOTS of Warriors available on this island. We just need the “right one” to lead the Warrior Nation again! Let’s have a Hawaiian Games competition on UH Campus…The winner of the competition becomes the new Warrior for the year!

  22. ATX Warrior April 17, 2016 2:17 pm

Leonard Peters would be the perfect Warrior! Dat bruddah is yoked, plus he get all da Polynesian Cultural Center experience.

  23. cappie the dog April 17, 2016 5:48 pm

My favorite mascot is the Stanford tree.

Anthropomorphizing an inanimate object. That’s the way to go.

Figure out what a “Pride Rock” would look like and slap some eyes on it.

Don’t give it an ethnicity; don’t make it look Hawaiian.

    Just a simple rock…with eyes.

  24. cappie the dog April 17, 2016 5:51 pm

Cody Culp is having such a great season.

I think Coach Trapasso may have put him in a bad situation.

    Three appearances in three days.

    What did he expect?

Perfect spot for Josh Pigg. Get him started, in the friendly confines.

The team needs a deeper bullpen.

  25. ALLAN April 17, 2016 6:53 pm

NONE OF VILI’S SONS WENT TO U.H.

  26. legistlature April 18, 2016 12:16 am

None of Dave Shoji’s boy’s went to UH
Both Dave & Vili’s boys very gifted

  27. Maddog50 April 18, 2016 2:15 am

Good to here some players getting bigger and developing. I think some of incoming freshman will play a role-still have needs at DL and OL. We will see. Hope Moose continues to get bigger-Hey what’s up with Luke Clement?

  28. H-Man April 18, 2016 4:02 am

Maddog50, Luke was on the sidelines with the other rehabbing players that included among others, TE Davasyla Haggar, RB Mel Davis, DT Kory Rasmussen and MLB Rashaan Falemalu.

  29. 808warriorfan April 18, 2016 6:51 am

Sounds like our new S & C Coach “Bubba” is doing a good job …

  30. Ipu Man April 18, 2016 6:58 am

For a mascot, how about a full halau of the best of Merry Monarch?

  31. legistlature April 18, 2016 7:25 am

full halau… Imua on dat 1

  32. legistlature April 18, 2016 7:29 am

Can Rolo visualize dat…it doesn’t always have to be if it’s not my idea then it’s not the best idea.
    I dare you..hehe

    Proverbs 16

1 We can make our own plans,
but the LORD gives the right answer.

2 People may be pure in their own eyes,
but the LORD examines their motives.

3 Commit your actions to the LORD,
    and your plans will succeed.

4 The LORD has made everything for his own purposes,
even the wicked for a day of disaster.

    5 The LORD detests the proud;
    they will surely be punished.

6 Unfailing love and faithfulness make atonement for sin.
By fearing the LORD, people avoid evil.
9 We can make our plans,
but the LORD determines our steps
    18 Pride goes before destruction,
    and haughtiness before a fall.
19 Better to live humbly with the poor
than to share plunder with the proud.
    20 Those who listen to instruction will prosper;
those who trust the LORD will be joyful.
21 The wise are known for their understanding,
    and pleasant words are persuasive.

22 Discretion is a life-giving fountain to those who possess it,
but discipline is wasted on fools.

    23 From a wise mind comes wise speech;
the words of the wise are persuasive.

24 Kind words are like honeyβ€”
sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.

25 There is a path before each person that seems right,
    but it ends in death.
    28 A troublemaker plants seeds of strife;
gossip separates the best of friends.
    30 With narrowed eyes, people plot evil;
with a smirk, they plan their mischief.
    32 Better to be patient than powerful;
better to have self-control than to conquer a city.
33 We may throw the dice,*
but the LORD determines how they fall

  34. Boolakanaka April 18, 2016 10:09 am

Faith is great thing, but I come here to talk and reminisce about football-so please 33 stop with the daily proselytization–it’s disrespectful and presumptious.

  35. Jeezy33 April 18, 2016 10:21 am

    34. Seriously . Couldn’t agree more. This isn’t the place for that

  36. Boolakanaka April 18, 2016 10:33 am

Yup, Jeezy this is the place to talk about the virtues of cover two or whether someone has bulked-up to sufficiently execute a three technique…not the rapture.

  37. Ron April 18, 2016 10:35 am

Thank you 34 & 35. Very well said.

  38. Da Punchbowl Kid April 18, 2016 10:35 am

#34 Well said esquire. BTW – young Ursua is gonna be a good one. When you coming back to town? We need to do the SSI thing.

  39. Boolakanaka April 18, 2016 10:40 am

DPK, probably next month (graduation season), for sure lets grab the usual suspects, plus Kifi and destroy side street!?!?

  42. Akamai Okole April 18, 2016 11:57 am

    Great Afternoon All!

In tru Tsaiko Tradition the bulking up continues! 😈 πŸ˜† πŸ˜‰

  43. Akamai Okole April 18, 2016 12:01 pm

    re: mascot

My take…no need be all hyped up like warriors. If you need to watch one mascot in order to get sufficiently pumped to play Big Blue in the Big House…

    Memor et fidelis

    😳

    Wrong hill!
