UH football: Raising the genius bar

Sure, this coaching staff is more social-media savvy. But there are other new teaching/assessment tools introduced this spring training, such as:

Joey Vela is in charge of operating the drone that hovers over workouts. Most of the footage will be used for special projects, but the bird's-eye view also is helpful in providing unique angles of practice drills.

Football is a game played on the ground, and UH has revived shooting video from field level. While Ben Yee (with toothpick dangling from his mouth) used a camcorder back in the Tomey/Wagner era, the Warriors now use a stabilizer that shoots footage that does not appear to be shot by a TMZ photog chasing after a Kardashian.

UH is testing a Catapult, a chip attached to a player's shoulder pads that enables tracking of, among other things, speed and deceleration. NFL and 60 college teams use the device. This is sports performance manager Ewan Robson.

Teaching tools don’t have to be expensive. A trip to Target is all that is needed for a Super Soaker to help in punt-return drills. Here’s my attempt at a video:

Drone special project: watch opponents’ practices, but watch out for the eagles.
The super soaker shooter has to be fast and quick.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Nice pics, ST! Rolo is definitely keeping up with the times.

Hope to see everyone at the MVB matches this weekend, especially tomorrow’s Senior Night!

And… Happy 7th Birthday to the blog mascot! He’s now officially eligible for canine AARP. 🙄 😆

    Islandman:
Interesting concept would be a battle between the Super Soaker and drone.

If it takes hard work to get it done, work hard! If it takes a little luck to succeed, let’s get some luck! If it takes technology to help us improve, then, let’s not fall behind!!

Drones and super soakers are wonderful, but awesome vids too? See errybody art practice tomorrow. 😉

It’s hard to believe Kolby is nearly at the end of his UH career. That went fast. He’s grown so much. I remember when he was just 5-7 like it was yesterday.

    DPK
I’m way behind. It took so long to upload videos yesterday, I just decided to upload them on Twitter and Instagram first.

    Do you know what’s eerie?
My grandkids got these light sabers from one of the UH basketball games. They stopped, well, lighting a couple weeks ago. But last night, they were all aglow again. Hmmm. It was like a lighted saber for Aaron Valdes’ departure.

    ST – #9 😆 😆 😆
#12 – did someone change the batteries?

    It was the force….

    Great video clips.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Mahalo for the pics and vids.
Not sure what the rules are for the Okie drills but if the defenders could get started a little faster and hit before ball carriers get up a head of steam, they could “drop” them in their tracks for no yds….imho..easier said then done..lol
    Luv the energy!
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  17. SteveM April 8, 2016 1:21 pm

    Thanks for the videos, ST!

Where can I get a t-shirt, black with the Warrior and rainbow, in the picture above?

  19. AllG April 8, 2016 2:01 pm

The Unga vs Manoa battle would have been interesting if that were a real game whether he crossed the goalline before he fumbled.

  20. AllG April 8, 2016 2:04 pm

I’m liking so far what I have been hearing about David Manoa this spring. Wouldn’t be surprised if he was one of our starting DEs come game day. He always had the athletic ability and now seems to be putting it all together.

Any indications if more football alumni are going to be attending Saturday’s practice?

A-house, slugger~ I just got back from Vegas this morning. Stayed at the Cal. I guess I missed you guys. Most of our vacation was spent away from the Cal with my wife’s family. No nothing while there. Cal’s machines very tight and they are under going renovations. Played other places including the Plaza which we made small kine money. No sports/Warrior Beat while there. Didn’t even know who won the basketball championships, both men and women, until the next day. Would have won if I bet. Just caught up with the WB. Looks like the Warriors are headed in the right direction although it make take a few years to undo the bad. Thanks ST for pictures and videos.

Aaron Valdez: Don’t hire an agent.

    Talk to Mike Edwards.

  24. Shoko April 9, 2016 8:31 am

Valdez achieved what he set out to do when he first got here, which is to enjoy his four years in paradise, get his degree and make it to the NCAA tournament.

Despite the issues that surrounded the MBB program these last few years, I think his journey has been amazing, especially when you consider he was just a walk-on.

Life is only now beginning for him and I wish him the best of luck.

  25. Ipu Man April 9, 2016 9:12 am

Aaron Valdez would be my vote to make the NBA but
it takes teammates to toss him the ball at the right
time… So a vote to the whole team. 🙂

  26. islandman April 9, 2016 11:00 am

    Note: Valdes, not Valde z.

  27. kahuna April 9, 2016 12:29 pm

Well…for one….What can Mike Edwards for Aaron? Give him advice on covering WRs and running back kicks…LOL

Would be bettah if Aaron spoke to Mike THOMAS.
