Spring football: A fresh start

Spring was in the air …

… and a drone, which shot video as part of the Warriors’ social-media program …

… and footballs throw by coach Nick Rolovich, who dusted off the magic touch that set passing records more than a decade ago …

… And rat-a-tat passes from the quarterbacks who fired off five in a row, much like a basketball player during jump-shot drills.

Rolo Era has started.

    1st or 2nd ? Good pics.

  2. 99club March 30, 2016 9:26 am

Thanks for the pics, ST. I’d be curious to find out how much weight Markus was able to add in the off-season.

  3. islandman March 30, 2016 9:35 am

Tulimasealii, try spelling that without looking at it somewhere else. He is the lightest he’s been since 8th grade, per ST article.

    Success is here.
    One year and clear.
    Spring to the future.
    Let’s Go Warriors!

  5. orioles4eva March 30, 2016 9:45 am

I have hope again this spring for the first time in three years. The overall record might be the same but the enthusiasm and effort, by players and coaching staff will be much better. Defend the Rock.

  6. NorthShoreFan March 30, 2016 10:54 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Great to hear the Warriors “buying in” to Coach Rolo’s tenure. New slate so everyone has to earn the positions. Exciting times to see who will step up and who will just pretend.
OFF TOPIC … but kind of related…
    http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaabk/unc-scandal-is-overshadowing-success-and-roy-williams-is-suffering-for-it/ar-BBr7ON3?ocid=spartanntp

Hard to believe this is still not finished. In spite of all the crap this program has been dealing out, it is still allowed to continue with no conclusion in sight.

  7. HawaiiMongoose March 30, 2016 11:48 am

Still only seeing three orange jerseys in the photos. Wasn’t a fourth, walk-on QB supposed to join practice today?

  8. Stephen Tsai March 30, 2016 11:51 am

They had walk-on tryouts for three QBs yesterday. Not sure who got picked up. But our old friend Hunter Hughes was throwing the ball.

  9. H-Man March 30, 2016 12:26 pm

I see Fred Ulu-Perry (#64) in the pic of O-linemen. So he can practice, but not play until 2017?

  10. letsgowarriors March 30, 2016 12:38 pm

thats not Kennedy is it? looks more like Penitito or someone else.

Camanse-Stevens and Kemp have some good size. hope we are able to utlitize it. DonYeh looks like hes about to body a catch.

  11. A-joe March 30, 2016 12:44 pm

ST. Remind Na Koa to purchase a Drone for the video crew. Do away with the scissor lift. Wea Stretch…

  12. haroldwah March 30, 2016 1:12 pm

Sure would like to see Mr. Ben Yee on the UH sidelines again.

  13. Rodney March 30, 2016 1:38 pm

Wow Qb “Z” can sure zing it around and Ikaika looks stronger.
    Just my observation!!

  14. NotNasti March 30, 2016 2:52 pm

Letsgo: that’s most definitely Kennedy in the third picture.

  15. kev-1 March 30, 2016 3:53 pm

Welcome back ST. Hope all is well with you. I saw the piece about you on KHON. I was really touched by your story and am happy that you are keeping your streak going.

    Beau Reilly looks bigger.

  16. kev-1 March 30, 2016 3:55 pm

On the video from yesterday’s practice, Rolo was demonstrating a quicker release than the other QBs.

  17. Buffoman March 30, 2016 4:28 pm

I would concur. The best thing about the blog is that we have it. Good to see you have overcome the necessary ordeal and have mended nicely.

Everything else is, as they say, “gravy”. Great to have you back.

  18. Fei Jai March 30, 2016 5:12 pm

Not impressed so far with Rolo and what he has done at this point. His assistants. Ouch. Recruits. Not too much to be excited about. Hope he does well for our beloved UH, but not looking very promising at the moment.

  19. Da Punchbowl Kid March 30, 2016 5:46 pm

Awesome pics and up to the minute news on the awesome Warriors and their awesome staff.

Tsai is in mid – season form arleady!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  20. azwarrior22 March 30, 2016 6:02 pm

#18, I mean really??? Why are you passing judgement before they have even played a down. I like Rolo’s energy. I think it will infectious for the team.

ST, welcome back !!! I didn’t even know the blog was back up until yesterday.

  21. Warrior Dave March 30, 2016 6:36 pm

#18, well that didn’t take long. At least the criticism didn’t start till the 2nd spring practice…

New staff, new year, new optimism, new beginnings. I am hopeful.

  22. A-House March 30, 2016 7:16 pm

    Warrior Dave:

again, many thanks for your assist at Rainbowtique at the SSC!

Fei Jai March 30, 2016 at 5:12 pm
Not impressed with what I’ve done in life at this point. My manners? Ouch. Intelligence? Not too much to be excited about. Hope I do well at anything in life, but not looking very promising at the moment.

  24. Da Punchbowl Kid March 30, 2016 9:29 pm

already* that should read above – sorry.

@ azwarrior22 and Warrior Dave – mahalo! You guys are awesome! 😉

  25. panda96720 March 30, 2016 10:31 pm

Why are you all pick on #18….he/she is just saying what he/she sees so far and not impressed. (maybe is blind person)

More motivation for all to work harder and prove him wrong, which I am sure will happen. Then will win 10 this season is how I see it

  26. Frannyk March 30, 2016 10:38 pm

    #18

It’s easier to sit and point fingers than to have something constructive to say.

Rolo has been nothing but positive, motivating and hopeful. His coaching staff is young and hungry. His players even hungrier. (That’s hard to get those same players to put out like that after last year)

And we have to listen to crud like this? You’ve got a lot of nerve.

    LIVE ALOHA, PLAY WARRIOR!

  27. Maddog50 March 31, 2016 3:22 am

Not impressed? If you could add Fred U-P to the recruiting number the Warriors would have racked up 1000 points in the rankings on just 19 recruits-that would have ranked them # 71. Can’t add him because he is a transfer-fact is he is on scholarship….on just 19 recruits where some schools hav 25 or more-

  28. Maddog50 March 31, 2016 3:30 am

Not impressed-coach Rolovich lost his OC to Boise State for pay and personal. At least 2 others were close to being poached. I am not impressed with critics who do nothing more than criticize. Some 100 plus former Warriors showed up for the spring KO meeting-when has that ever happened-do something positive buy season tickets join Na Koa, go out to practice-I for one am very impressed with Coach Rolovichs efforts. I realize that there are some among us that just like to stir the pot I am not trapped into that but felt like stating the obvious- impressed yes I am- Go Warriors!!!!

  29. H-Man March 31, 2016 4:55 am

Rolo’s radio interview on the Animals’ show yesterday afternoon was very interesting and provoked more optimism for this coaching staff and team. Rolo’s love for Hawaii and coaching style will produce winning and winners. Can’t wait to see what Kevin Lempa does with the defense. Go Warriors !!!

  30. cappie the dog March 31, 2016 5:18 am

Jeff Sydner is the only example of a UH athlete leaving early that panned out.

  31. Steve P March 31, 2016 5:38 am

Hello –‘Not impressed’. Whats it take to turn you on jack? Rolo rolls in here professing undying love the Islands and its peoples (this includes you pal) and some of the first words out of his mouth is ‘ pride rock’…lets be great again. Then proceeds to bring in some really outstanding recruits including a 4 star running back out of Cali. After one practice you got the juice to write you’re not impressed? All I can say is this: ‘The imperfect eye beholds only imperfection’. You need to go sit down and think about it.

  32. UHBooster March 31, 2016 5:40 am

What is the word on Nic Tom from Kaiser High? He looks like a Chad Owens type player.

  33. oldtimer808 March 31, 2016 6:42 am

This is only normal coming from the great Fei Jai who goes through life being unimpressed with everything he sees and professes to be true.

  34. Arcumfortis March 31, 2016 7:14 am

    31. “The imperfect eye be holds only imperfection.”

    That’s a home run!

  35. Warrior14T March 31, 2016 7:20 am

I know what I am impressed with:
    #’s 20,21,23,25,26,27,28,29,31,32

  36. walt March 31, 2016 7:29 am

#18: I think Coach mentioned during his 1420 radio interview that the practices are open and that he welcomes “face to face” suggestions.

  37. Ipu Man March 31, 2016 7:56 am

Great pics but Rolo looks like best qb out there…

  38. Maddog50 March 31, 2016 8:28 am

    Fight on my Warrior brothers!

  39. 808warriorfan March 31, 2016 9:09 am

PLAY FOR EACH OTHER … HAVE EACH OTHERS BACK … LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR … DEFEND PRIDE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!
