Put on notice

It is easy to overlook that schools don’t fire head coaches, they fire coaching staffs.

A couple days after Norm Chow was dismissed as head coach, his assistant coaches and staff received termination notices from UH. Or, as one coach said: “We got our love letters.”

They will be paid through the end of their one-year contracts, which usually expire around March 1.

The notices are standard procedure.

But it still is a reminder of the sport’s fragile security and the employees who will be affected. These are employees who have to pay rent, tuition, and raise children. For those not rehired by the next head coach, they have to look for new work — sometimes not in athletics.

For many, working for the UH football program is a storybook job. But not all stories end happily ever after.

  3. seewhy November 5, 2015 10:07 am

Unfortunately, that’s the bottom line of football. It’s a business.

  4. Old School Dave November 5, 2015 10:19 am

Best of luck to the current coaches on staff. Yes, it’s a business, but there is still the human factor, regardless. At least the new coach will not have to give pink slips to the current staff members.

  5. george November 5, 2015 10:20 am

that remind me of what the sports commentators said about the Ohio State QB who was picked up for DUI. He can do that after the season. He should have thought about his responsibility to this teammates and coaches. These are people’s livelihoods. They are on scholarship. They need to be responsible. I sometimes think players and fans are spoiled. if they aren’t winning, then they pout and point fingers.

  6. kanak November 5, 2015 10:22 am

A head coach is/will be only as good as his staff. Here’s hoping the new coach can find the right guys and keep them… GO BOWS!!!

  7. H-Man November 5, 2015 10:24 am

If they received termination notices, can they effectively leave their jobs immediately without penalty? If yes, was it smart that UHAD issued the notices so soon? After all, these coaches are effectively looking for a new job and they may decide to begin their search sooner than later.

    College football.
If you know me, you know that I have been an outspoken fan of the UH team for several years.
I am a fan in support of the student athletes and cheered them on as they made their dreams come true.
Football on the college and professional levels has quickly evolved into a gladiator sport (wink to Shane Austin) for entertainment today and but for a very small handful who have survived to play as a career, most of these young athletes are not finding success after college because of the injuries they sustained.
So what is the point of all this sacrifice?

Some of the most content and successful former student athletes I know personally were swimmers.
They took the challenges of their athletic endeavors, set goals and improved and learned a lot about themselves and when they graduated, they became dentists, watermen, business people, and public servants (nod to Mark Takai).

Today, I personally don’t care who the new head coach is. I feel that the sport of college football is becoming a killing field of young brains and limbs and no longer serves the greater good of our society.

I’ll still support our athletes and I hope they make good choices in the sports they select to play.

    God Bless.

A guy that should have been fired a long time ago is Luke Matthews. His unit can’t catch a cold.

  10. Arcumfortis November 5, 2015 10:29 am

Perhaps one of Norm Chow’s most significant missteps was his intial move to not rehire any of Mack’s staff (with the exception of Tony Tuioti if I remember correctly). There were a number of members of Mack’s staff that were much more capable than any of the coaches Chow hired throughout his tenure. On the whole, Chow’s staff never came up to par with Mack’s staff in my opinion. I understand the need to have your own people but this needs to be balanced with who your “own people” are and how capable they are. The instability of the Norm Chow’s staff probably contributed to taking us to this pit we are in. So new coach……whoever you may be……look carefully at this current group of assistants.

  11. Down with... November 5, 2015 10:33 am

Put on Notice….UH Fans! Show up and support for the final 3 home games. Don’t worry, whatever your thoughts about the team, the UH, or the administration, just know it DOESN”T matter…what matters is you showing up to support the Rainbow Warrior Football team and the sport we can’t live without. Go Bows!!!

  12. cocobean November 5, 2015 10:48 am

The UNLV game is crucial. Winning should create some momentum in sales to non season ticket holders. A loss would have more people giving up and waiting for next year. The Athletic Department is taking a big hit this year. Fans of the program should realize that best way to show your support is to buy a ticket if you don’t already have one. Offering up suggestions is all well and good but buying a ticket is even better.

  13. Maddog50 November 5, 2015 10:49 am

Down with ….I m with you. Regarding the Warrior aspect of football. I absolutely do not regret 1 second of my time on the field. Coached in HS for 12 years after that. On a recent trip to NM with former Warriors they included doctor, 2 Ceo’s business guys like myself and retired teachers. They all feel the same way as I do. Most of these guys are more than well off and cherish there time at Hawaii. We talk about others who did not join us and the overwhelming number of guys did very well in personal and professional lives-now lets go out and get one for the “H”!!!!!

  14. H-Man November 5, 2015 10:57 am

I’ll be at the Fresno St./San Jose St games. Go Warriors !!!

“If they received termination notices, can they effectively leave their jobs immediately without penalty? If yes, was it smart that UHAD issued the notices so soon?”

this is standard procedure. idk what their contracts state about quitting, but they’re under contract until the end of the season. they are also auditioning for jobs. it’s doubtful that someone will poach a coordinator and put him on staff immediately with 3-4 games left in the season (if a hiring process can even go that fast). i guess the UH coordinator can just quit right now and spend the rest of the time on the couch until job vacancies at other schools are posted, but that would look extremely bad.

  16. Warbow November 5, 2015 11:15 am

And now, recruiting comes to a sudden haul.

  17. Warbow November 5, 2015 11:16 am

I hope the AD was watching the Bowling Green game last night. We want Dino!

  18. oldtimer808 November 5, 2015 11:30 am

Warbow you can forget about Dino. Big time schools with big time dollars is looking at him.

  19. What??? November 5, 2015 11:44 am

You don’t have to pay someone who doesn’t come to work.

  20. justsomeguy November 5, 2015 12:21 pm

They weren’t just my roommates…..they were actual players UNDER June Jones……..as were all their friends……..if that’s not evidence I don’t know what else is. It is already WIDELY known that JJ is a lazy recruiter…..just because you didn’t know it doesn’t make it false.

No matter what I or anyone else here says Come On Man and Pokesquid will refute me because they are blind to what is ahead of Hawaii football. It seems the only way to convince either of you would be to let him coach again then watch our beloved program fall even further apart. Unfortunately I’m not one to do things out of spite…….so I will continue to advocate for someone younger, who can deal with the business of college football and who actually spends a reasonable amount of time recruiting the players they need.

You both are so stuck in the past you’ll never change your minds. So I’m threw trying to have a reasonable discussion with either of you.

  21. Na Alii Pride November 5, 2015 12:29 pm

There definitely is a human side. Norm Chow was a good man, as I assume are most of his assistants. It’s a tough business, that requires thick skin.

I’m hoping that the next coach, whoever he is, will keep Chris Naole, maybe Abe too. The rest of them, well, it wasn’t just Norm’s fault that we didn’t do well this season. I’m sure Mason and Bailey will find work easily. Good luck to all of them, I’m sure they gave it their all.

  22. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 12:30 pm

If Pat Hill did indeed apply for the job, put him up as one of my top candidates. All the guy did was win and recruit/develop NFL players. He has all the connections you can ask for in the Central Valley and I believe is competent enough to hire the right local coaches to build a relationship with local recruits in Hawaii. He instilled the Well play anybody anywhere mentality that had the whole team and community bought in. They fired him in the prime of Derek Carr college career. Now look where Fresno football is without him. Talent level that dropped is drastic. I could list names forever on how many guys Pat Hill brought to Fresno.

  23. oneseason November 5, 2015 12:32 pm

It is also good to remember all the previous Chow coaches that lost their jobs, and all the student athletes that worked their tails off but were not able to experience more than 4 wins against MWC opponents in 4 and a half years. But this weekend, the current coaching staff and players have a chance to show how they can perform under new leadership. I know we aren’t recording score predictions this week, but I expect a win on Saturday for the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warrior Football Team. Let’s Go Bows!

  24. Dano November 5, 2015 12:35 pm

big game tonight Nevada at Fresno St. Pat Hill may be applying for Hawaii job.

  25. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 12:39 pm

    In Pat I Trust!

    #10 … “Down with …” … I’LL BE THERE !!!!! If I’m not call 9-1-1 ‘cuz something must’ve happened to me …

  27. Old School Dave November 5, 2015 12:43 pm

Pat Hill: “Anybody, anytime, anywhere.” Things are getting interesting (?).

  28. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 12:45 pm

    26. That kind of shit pumps me up because he walked the walk. And no one can ever criticize his recruiting. If June Jones is a QB guru, then Pat Hill is a QB god. and a RB factory.

  29. oneseason November 5, 2015 12:47 pm

I don’t worry about hiring an up and coming coach that might leave the UH head coach job in a few years. The only way they would be recruited is if they won big at UH … which is what we want. If we get winning, ticket sales would likely increase, ticket prices could be raised a bit, and there would be more money available to either match offered salaries or hire another good head coach. So I hope AD Matlin throws a wide recruiting net. It would be good if he could tap the local community for coaching salary support without strings … but can’t see that happening.

  30. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 12:48 pm

Pat Hill understands what promoting and selling a football program is all about. He understands the importance of engaging with the community and building a connection. The V sticker was meant to represent not just Fresno but the entire San Joaquim Valley. I have no doubt in my mind he would engage with the local community. I’m sure he still has a relationship with Bill The Thrill Belichick too.

  31. Old School Dave November 5, 2015 12:48 pm

While I rooted against Fresno State, I always admired the tough, hard nosed, and physical persona of Pat Hill and his teams. His teams had a lot of skilled athletes, too.

  32. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 12:49 pm

    28. Preach!. Hawaii fans get offended when we get talked about as a stepping stone. If we win 3 years and a coach leaves, thats a good thing. Program is built and next coach just needs to bring in continuity.

  33. 808warriorfan November 5, 2015 12:49 pm

#23 … Pat Hill … now there’s a name … hasn’t coached I believe since leaving the Falcons after the ’13 season … problem is I don’t think he’ll be a fit for UH as he loves “smash mouth” football and we won’t be able to recruit those kind of OL.

  34. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 12:51 pm

    30. Not sure if you watched Fresno St recently but the drop off in talent since Tim Deruyter took over has been gigantic. Fresno was always known for good QBs, WRs, and RBs under Hill. Now that Deruyter doesn’t have Carr and Devante Adams to rely on, his teams have sucked.

  35. FearGod November 5, 2015 12:53 pm

are we jonesing for a top notch coach..will find one who will bring back the happy days…As the Fonze qouted, the mistake i made was not my fault

  36. Old School Dave November 5, 2015 12:54 pm

UNLV still upset over their last second loss to UH last year. Sanchez is using that as a rallying cry this week. Rebel radio guy said that their facilities are terrible, but have a football complex in the works, pending funding.

  37. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 12:54 pm

    32. He recruited them at Fresno. Don’t doubt the man. His recruiting connections are ridiculously good. He found Logan Mankins in a small town in the mountains and TEs like Bear Pascoe in the middle of no where Porterville.

  38. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 5, 2015 12:55 pm

I’m not totally against at Pat Hill hire. Guy has a lot of class. I’m trying to remember if it was during our Sugar Bowl season that after UH beat Fresno, he addressed the UH team and offered encouraging words. It was there that I gained a new respect for Hill. He isn’t just a good technician but a real coach.

  39. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 5, 2015 12:57 pm

Found the article about Pat Hill addressing the UH team in 2007.

    http://archives.starbulletin.com/2007/11/11/sports/story04.html

  40. oneseason November 5, 2015 12:57 pm

I never heard the outcome of the Fresno State football welfare fraud allegations, and can’t find any updates online after Sept 2011. I would expect that sort of thing would be looked into during the vetting process … http://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2011/09/09/fresno-state-football-players-tied-to-welfare-fraud/

  41. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 5, 2015 12:59 pm

There are many schools that will or are already regretting their coaching changes. Michigan when they let go of Carr. Texas when they let go of Brown. Washington with Neuheisel. And soon, more than likely Fresno with Pat Hill.

  42. 808warriorfan November 5, 2015 1:03 pm

The question is has he (Pat Hill) applied … ?????

  43. Former UH Athlete November 5, 2015 1:03 pm

I remember Bear Pascoe. Big boy. Not real fast but a very good run blocking TE and had decent hands. I see he’s still in the NFL.

I love the thought of naming your kid “Bear”.

  44. 808warriorfan November 5, 2015 1:07 pm

#8 … “Makai” … I agree with you about our WR coach and WRs … I was surprised when Jordan Wynn was let go Matthews was kept …

  45. 808warriorfan November 5, 2015 1:09 pm

Just curious who out there feels the same way I do … Norm’s first group of Assistant Coaches (minus Tony Tuioti) was a Joke … we could have had either Cal and/or Ron Lee but Norm picks Tommy. Tuioti is a DL but Norm makes him the LB coach. I really feel this was the beginning of the end …

  46. letsgowarriors November 5, 2015 1:10 pm

you do know “Bear” is his nickname?

  47. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 1:10 pm

    41. Someone on the boards posted he heard Hill applied. Only rumors at this point but I would be excited if he did. He’s proven. You know what you’re going to get. He loves to run the ball. So what. When you can recruit RBs like Ryan Matthews, Robbie Rouse, Lonyeh Miller, Wendell Mathis, Clifton Smith… I would run the ball too. It’s not like they didn’t pass the ball well. Bernard Berrian, Marlon Moore, Devante Adams, Jalen Saunders, Ajirotutu, Devon Wylie, Paul Williams all dominated.

  48. Come on, man! November 5, 2015 1:12 pm

“You both are so stuck in the past you’ll never change your minds. So I’m threw trying to have a reasonable discussion with either of you.”

nothing you said was reasonable. but i do agree that june jones had a bad rep as a recruiter in SMU. i’ve also already stated that i’d rather see a young and upcoming coach over june jones, so clearly you’re having some reading comprehension issues in regards to what i’m saying.

    anyway. have a nice day.

  49. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 5, 2015 1:12 pm

    #8,

Yes. Matthews has done an atrocious job with what started out in the pre-season as one of the most promising unit of the team. Can’t say many fans are going to miss him.

  50. Andrew November 5, 2015 1:14 pm

    46.

Would be interesting hiring a coach that fans loved to hate (with respect of course) for all those years. I’m sure it would take Fresno fans a while to adjust to that too. I still remember reading back in the paper in 2007 after their game with Fresno, coach Hill went into the UH locker room to congratulate the team and wish them luck for the rest of the season knowing they were the leagues best chance to go to the BCS that year.

  51. Former UH Athlete November 5, 2015 1:14 pm

Pat Hill is definitely intriguing. I do like his ability to find recruits in far away places.

The pill UH fans would have to swallow is that Hill used to run a “pro-style” offense which featured a smashmouth run game.

  52. Andrew November 5, 2015 1:15 pm

    49.

I have nothing but respect for the guy. He’s an awesome coach. It’s a shame he didn’t last longer at Fresno.

  53. WarriorNY November 5, 2015 1:15 pm

    Jeezy33,
Sorry but did I get the jist of your posts… You can’t stand if June Jones is hired but you want Pat Hill????

I like your player analysis but that’s kind of ridiculous… Pat Hill over June Jones? Sorry but no…

  54. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 5, 2015 1:16 pm

mwc connection reported he is a candidate but no idea what that means. did he apply. does he want to apply. was he asked. etc etc.

    http://www.mwcconnection.com/2015/11/4/9672452/fresno-states-pat-hill-a-candidate-for-hawaii-job

  55. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 1:17 pm

    48. I’m not trying to say Matthews is a good coach by any means, but our WRs simply can’t catch the ball. I have a hard time blaming a coach for WRs that are scared of contact. I don’t think Chow gave him the freedom to offer any WRs he wanted either. I didn’t bother attending practices this year so maybe you saw more than me. But in previous years, I thought Matthews worked the WRs pretty well with routes and stuff. Barker could never figure it out. But some guys just arent cut out for it.

  56. kimo browner November 5, 2015 1:17 pm

Didnt JJ put 67 points on the board against Fresno State in their house. If memory serves me, Bull Dawg fans didnt return after the break. Look, Im not trying to put down other candidates competing with JJ–but if you are going to X-out JJ, be creative with your choices. Moreover, be real! BTW, Pat Hill and JJ are great friends.

  57. WarriorNY November 5, 2015 1:18 pm

    gist…. not jist

  58. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 1:19 pm

    52. Yes you read right. Pat Hill over June Jones.

  59. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 1:20 pm

    55. In that case, get rid of Hill because Fresno lost to Hawaii. lol

  60. cappie the dog November 5, 2015 1:21 pm

    31.

I used to worry that Gib Arnold was using Hawaii as a “stepping stone”.

  61. kimo browner November 5, 2015 1:23 pm

Does any one remember the year TC was QB and Hawaii was embarrassed on national TV twice? In fact one TV commentator said Hawaii’s D was HS level. That same year TC was benched in Boise as the game went south. TC was going for a UH record. Well, that same year, we closed the season beating NW and MSU–2 BIG TEN teams! We went bowling. The point is we started out poorly and finished strong. That is coaching folks!

  62. cappie the dog November 5, 2015 1:23 pm

I always keep an eye on the USC women’s basketball program.

  63. Bryson November 5, 2015 1:24 pm

While the whole idea of Pat Hill is interesting if people are eliminating JJ from their list due to the R-n-S being outdated and the last 2 seasons at SMU,Then Pat Hill should fall into the same category…

  64. letsgowarriors November 5, 2015 1:25 pm

so was it coaching when Fresno killed us 70-14 on national TV in 2014?

  65. Come on, man! November 5, 2015 1:27 pm

” If June Jones is a QB guru, then Pat Hill is a QB god. and a RB factory.”

lol. let’s not be hyperbolic here. i could maybe see RB factory, although you don’t really see that description in sports media in america for pat hill fresno teams.

QB god? no. june jones, if he was regarded as a qb guru (which i wonder if he actually was regarded as this), would probably be described as so because quarterbacks in the run and shoot tend to put up extremely ridiculous numbers. and he coached several record breaking qbs.

in general, fresno had good qbs, but it wasn’t until they were running the air raid with derek carr that everyone was like “holy crap. this fresno quarterback is like a human video game.”

  66. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 5, 2015 1:28 pm

    Bryson,

Really? Share that with Rocky Long at SDSU who are at 6-3 and run the power I like the rent is due tonight.

  67. Akamai Okole November 5, 2015 1:30 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

Best wishes to the Assistant Coaches.

  68. Bigwave96744 November 5, 2015 1:30 pm

I don’t see any of the assistant coaches being hired anywhere between now and the end of the season, so I’m not worried about anyone leaving.

  69. Derek November 5, 2015 1:31 pm

Interesting. Hill will be 64 in December. Jones will be 63 in February. The two are good friends too. If either one gets the job, I can see at the most 5 years on the job.
Which is fine, considering their ages. In the first place, very few coaches stay in one place very long. I’m sure there are other qualified candidates. We will see very soon how well Dave Matlin selects his coaches and how well they do. First, Ganot, then this position. Maybe he should look for another soccer coach too. They have been terrible the last 3 or 4 years, no even making it to the conference playoffs. Unless, of course, soccer is not important because it’s not a revenue sport. Just saying, but isn’t the objective to have winning seasons and perform well. Doesn’t that count in the Director’s Cup?

  70. Old School Dave November 5, 2015 1:31 pm

Is Miano going to continue broadcasting the final 4 UH games, now that he has applied for the head coaching job there?

  71. Akamai Okole November 5, 2015 1:32 pm

    Brrrrrr….

It is cold here! Today, not as much as yesterday. (But darlin’ not as much as to—mor—row…)

    nahnahnah
Ackchally suppustoo get warmer as we get closer to game day. (Average for this time of year is high around 70)

  72. letsgowarriors November 5, 2015 1:33 pm

all i have to say about this coaching search is there are a lot of candidates out there. i wouldnt be so narrow minded on JJ. i hope Matlin sits down w who he feels are the best candidates and listens to their presentations. and presentations might be good but he’ll also have to do his due diligence to see if the coach has the skills to actually implement his plan successfully.

right now, im hoping Joe Salave’a has applied and caught the eye of Matlin.

  73. seewhy November 5, 2015 1:33 pm

    63.

    I think you meant 2004.

  74. Shoko November 5, 2015 1:33 pm

I can imagine Matlin reading the blog and thinking all the names mentioned are very good candidates, but stressing because he wouldn’t be able to afford the salaries. It’s like your wife telling you to buy a Mercedes but knowing realistically you can afford a Toyota Camry. I don’t envy Matlin.

  75. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 1:33 pm

    62. I’m not eliminating JJ. It’s a collective amount of things that I don’t feel JJ is the right man for the job anymore. I’d much rather have him than Chow so I’m not trying to seem like I would stop going to games and rooting for the team.

    1. His offense has been poor as of late. Blame recruiting, boosters, facilities, whatever.. It was bad in his final years at SMU. his resources were better at SMU than Hawaii so there should be no excuse for the dip.

    2. He is a lazy recruiter. I am as avid a recruiting follower as there is. I know 1 guy who follows just as closely as I do. The rest of the fans just like any recruit that shows interest in Hawaii. JJ was notoriously lazy and had the mentality that people would come. He was right, but doesn’t mean he couldn’t recruit harder as well. Any time you get a Shane Austin to walk on, you have a right to be cocky though.

    3. His off field drama. I mean some are rumors but he rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Boosters hated him at SMU. I won’t get into specific things I’ve heard.

    4. He did quit after 2 games. Lot of people said he was checked out. I don’t want that risk. I know he was ran out and forced to resign but anytime you have a poor showing and you start blaming personal reasons, do we need that risk? Maybe I am wrong and he isn’t checked out. I just don’t think it’s worth it to see him go all out for 2 years, then have personal issues in year 3 .

  76. Akamai Okole November 5, 2015 1:33 pm

Call me crazy but I not paying $30 to watch kids swim….

  77. letsgowarriors November 5, 2015 1:34 pm

    yeah 2004 lol

  78. Shoko November 5, 2015 1:35 pm

I’ll throw another name out there since we are talking about WAC head coaches of the past.

    Robb Akey!

  79. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 5, 2015 1:35 pm

    jeezy33,

if you are an avid recruiting follower, can you please name me the players that Naeole was directly responsible for bringing in?

  80. Bryson November 5, 2015 1:43 pm

    Iwwthm,

What does Rocky Long have to do with the JJ/PH comparison?

  81. Come on, man! November 5, 2015 1:45 pm

“While the whole idea of Pat Hill is interesting if people are eliminating JJ from their list due to the R-n-S being outdated and the last 2 seasons at SMU,Then Pat Hill should fall into the same category…”

lol yes. how the hell is june jones outdated and unable to adapt to the “modern defense” with an “average” and non-prolific offense but then all of a sudden Pat Hill, who has been out of football coaching longer than june jones has, and who was fired after a 4-9 season, IN ADDITION to having a losing record to june jones (i mean, the dude got blown out 68-37 at home against hawaii at one point), all of a sudden has none of the questions associated with that?

the guy runs an offense that’s much closer to norm chow’s original vision of a pro-style offense than it is to the spread offenses of ohio state and baylor, yet all of a sudden people are saying that he’s now a “QB God” and a “RB factory” even though NONE of the major sports media outlets EVER proclaimed fresno state and pat hill as such?

    give me a break.

  82. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 1:46 pm

Just because Come On Man wants to continue to be annoying…

You do realize Derek Carr was a SO. when Pat Hill was fired right? His success has a lot to do with his growth as a QB vs the Air Raid attack. Did you expect Derek to dominate in his 1st year as a starter?

June Jones didn’t install some brand new offense that allowed Colt Brennan to go off his Junior season. Don’t you think Colts familiarity had a lot more to do with his experience as a starting QB??

So whats your reasoning behind David Carr first year as a full time starter vs his Senior? Did Fresno run the Air Raid in 2001?

More ignorant comments… But keep them coming Come on Man. Until there is a ignore button on this blog, ill continue to be forced to read your ridiculous rebuttals to anything I post.

  83. seewhy November 5, 2015 1:47 pm

    26.

    I loved Pat Hill’s mentality.

  84. Come on, man! November 5, 2015 1:49 pm

dont’ get me wrong: pat hill = solid coach. fresno state teams were always consistently tough even though their win/loss records for the most part were closer to mediocre (8-5, 7-6, etc). and their offenses weren’t known to light up the scoreboard. it was ball control, physical, and smashmouth. you know, the same offense that norm chow wanted to implement.

geez, man. ding june jones for his offense being “average” and then not do the same for pat hill. talk about how we shouldn’t hire old people ready to retire then all of a sudden be like “Pat Hill = Football God.”

    talk about double standards.

  85. Fed Up November 5, 2015 1:53 pm

    Pat Hill? Really?
    1. He’s older than JJ (63)
    2. He has a losing record against JJ (3-6 I believe)
    3. His offense won’t work here. We need some kind of spread
    4. Recruiting to Hawaii will be much more difficult than to Fresno

  86. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 5, 2015 1:54 pm

    Bryson,

You are talking about making an comparison of Pat Hill’s offense to JJ’s with the common denominator of it being outdated i.e. ineffective. Rocky Long employs a very similar offense to the smash mouth style. Lots of i formations and power. SDSU is a successful program and today in 2015 they are 6-3.

  87. Come on, man! November 5, 2015 1:54 pm

jeezy: why you getting all butthurt? but let’s examine your stupid arguments:

“You do realize Derek Carr was a SO. when Pat Hill was fired right? His success has a lot to do with his growth as a QB vs the Air Raid attack. Did you expect Derek to dominate in his 1st year as a starter?”

so what? it’s a bottom line business, right, jeezy? those were your own words, right? it’s all about the wins and losses and the head coach is directly accountable. SO STOP MAKING EXCUSES. HE WAS FIRED BECAUSE HE HAD MEDIOCRE TEAMS AND THEN HE LOST.

I”M RIGHT, YOU’RE WRONG! YOU ARE IGNORANT! LALALA!

    man. it’s fun being jeezy.

“June Jones didn’t install some brand new offense that allowed Colt Brennan to go off his Junior season. Don’t you think Colts familiarity had a lot more to do with his experience as a starting QB??”

i dont’ see how this is relevant at all.

“So whats your reasoning behind David Carr first year as a full time starter vs his Senior? Did Fresno run the Air Raid in 2001?”

david carr was an exceptional qb. now tell me some other qbs that came out of fresno that put up numbers like timmy chang, rolo, brennan, hell, even kyle padron that one year SMU beat nevada in the hawaii bowl.

stop it, jeezy. just stop. you’re too much.

  88. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 1:56 pm

    78. I don’t know all the guys each coach were specifically recruiting. But off the top of my head I remember Naeole recruiting Tui Eli and Eperone Moananu. He had final say on offering JR Hensley and Austin Webb. He chose to greyshirt offer Micah Kapoi which opened up his recruitment with Wisconsin.

Luke Clements was a Don Bailey pick. Don’t know who recruited Matt Norman. Dejon Allen and Tupai were Powell guys.

  89. kimo browner November 5, 2015 1:57 pm

    @63. Exactly. Chow was coaching.

  90. Fed Up November 5, 2015 1:58 pm

How many BCS games did Pat Hill get to?

  91. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 1:59 pm

    85. Medicore? Because he had a losing season???

Come on Man might want to look up Billy Volek, Paul Pinegar, and Tom Brandstater. Lol… What a joke this clown is. Add those 3 to the Carr brothers..

Come on man is naming Kyle Padron.. lol How many NFL games has a June Jones QB played in??

  92. Old School Dave November 5, 2015 1:59 pm

Dave Matlin will check on the applicant’s (current or former) employer and see what is said. I think this has a lot of weight in the coaching profession. The impression that person makes in the interview will also be a factor. What’s your plan? How do you plan to implement it? How will you deal with this or that situation?

  93. Former UH Athlete November 5, 2015 2:01 pm

Pat Hill’s last few years at Fresno weren’t spectacular, but like most coaches with long runs at one school, their message can get old and people get tired of it.

I think he just ran his course there. From an outsider’s view, I think the powers controlling Fresno wanted him gone years before he was terminated, but they had to wait because Hill was having a good stretch of years. Then, in 2010 the school made him take a $300k pay cut later fired him once he had a losing record in 2011 (only his 2nd losing record since 1999.

  94. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 2:01 pm

Come on Man is comparing SMU 5-7 and 1-11 football teams with PAt Hills 8-5 and 7-6 4-9… lol genius.

  95. jeezy33 November 5, 2015 2:11 pm

    90. Lets not forget the talent Pat Hill left Tim Deruyter with vs what June Jones left Chad Morris with. It’s not even close

  96. seewhy November 5, 2015 2:15 pm

    87.

No, JJ was coach when they lost 70-14 at Fresno State. Last year’s game (under Chow, 2014) they lost 28 – 21.

  97. kimo browner November 5, 2015 2:15 pm

For the life of me I fail to understand the reasoning behind Pat Hill. I like the man personally. He was a spunky coach, fearless and had his moments of glory before his fall flunks sunk his ship.
Moreover, if bloggers are going to shoot JJ down bc he is a “museum piece and irrelevant to modern football”, than why on earth would they mention Pat Hill in the same breath?

  98. cocobean November 5, 2015 2:26 pm

I think Matlin has gotten more advice on this hire then Dear Abby gave out in a year worth worth of columns. Like he said in regards to all the people chiming in for their choice…it’s not a vote.

  99. Come on, man! November 5, 2015 2:36 pm

“Come on Man is comparing SMU 5-7 and 1-11 football teams with PAt Hills 8-5 and 7-6 4-9… lol genius.”

no, genius. i’m comparing June Jones body of work from Hawaii AND SMU to Pat Hill. I’m specifically referring to your bizarre argument that Pat Hill is a QB god and fresno was a RB factory when no major media outlets ever said this.

if june jones was considered a qb guru, it’s because his offenses were very qb friendly and he coached record breaking qbs. overall, pat hill’s qbs don’t match the statistical production, historically, of june jones’s qbs. this isn’t a knock on pat hill. it’s the type of offense they run.

how you can say that june jones can’t adapt and doesn’t have the chops for coaching, and saying (without proving) that defenses have figured out the run and shoot and say we don’t need coaches who are gonna retire, then all of a sudden laud pat hill as a “qb god” is beyond me.

how you can try to ding june jones’s offense as “average” and then lament the offensive ineptness of norm chow and even at one point say that to run a pro style attack, you need superior athletes that hawaii doesn’t have, then all of a sudden lobby for pat hill as “running back factory,” when he runs something way more similar to norm chow is beyond me.

i once said that june jones, in his tenure at SMU, had teams going 7-6 and 8-5, until his last two years. i said that if he did that at hawaii, that would be success. you replied that you have higher expectations than that. then you claim SMU is mediocre because of their records. then you bring up pat hill as coaching god, who is as old as jones, runs a pro style attack like norm chow, and has a historic record at fresno state which hovers around 7-6 and 8-5 (which yes. winning but mediocre), and all of a sudden THIS ISN’T A PROBLEM TO YOU ANYMORE???

as of late, you seem to be very rarely consistent in your positions since norm chow left. and then everytime i type something, you just go full blown condescending and insulting as if that somehow means you’re making good arguments.

that’s what i like about you, jeezy. you tend to give half informed opinions and argue them SO passionately. and when someone calls you out, you react so strongly to it that it’s entertaining and fun to read.

  100. Come on, man! November 5, 2015 2:39 pm

and what’s even MORE hilarious with this “pat hill is the future” talk (and for the record, i think pat hill is a solid coach, like june jones, but i’d rather not see either of them coaching UH) is that with all the talk of the antiquated run and shoot, june jones has an overall WINNING RECORD against pat hill coached fresno teams!

come on, dude. i know you want to be right, and i know when you have an opinion and say it, you will defend it to your last gasping breath (because apparently you are never wrong and you know everything about football), but this is just getting silly.

  101. Former UH Athlete November 5, 2015 2:43 pm

91… Hill and JJ left their successors with plenty of good players to work with. Like what you said, now that Hill’s recruits are cycled through, there’s been a significant drop in talent and speed with Deruyter’s recruits. Fresno 2014 was bad and 2015 is even worse.

This is the same reason I’ve been hard on Mack and his staff even though they floated around 6 wins. The recruiting stunk under Mack’s staff and Chow paid the price for that in 2012 and 2013. 2014 & this season are totally on Chow, but I do feel that the starting talent is better now than in 2012, but there’s no depth. I do think the next coach has some tools to work with.

The fruits of recruiting of the new coach aren’t noticeably apparent until years 3 or 4, once the previous coach’s recruits start graduating. Unless you hit few recruiting homeruns early, the first two seasons of a new coach are riding on the previous coaches players.

94… I saw Pat Hill’s name on the KHON2 article, but other than that, I really don’t know how his name became linked to the UH candidate list.

  102. Arcumfortis November 5, 2015 2:51 pm

Well the board is getting lively. After three and one half years of some sort of supressed energy the water of life and the dynamism starts to flow. Sure there are arguments and opinions and desires to be right. They matter less to me than feeling the charge of energy that is back here again. Perhaps I am too optimistic but I think out team will also benefit and play with new energy on Saturday. The poet Rilke refused the offer of psychoanalysis: he suggested that if you took away his demons you would also take away his angels. He understood something profound. Coach Chow thought he could make everything neat and clean. What we got instead was the empty shell of team with no lifeblood flowing. So I say to our boys (for example): Grow your hair long and be wild. There is a profound difference between sociopathy and the free flow of energy. Coach Chow didn’t understand this. Choir boys should sing in the choir. Football players are warriors and need to feel the energy of the warrior.

  103. lawaia November 5, 2015 2:51 pm

I have been attending the University of Hawaii’s football games for a few years with my children and now my grand kids have taken their places. In the third quarter of the Air Force game, a few fans started to leave. My eleven year old grandson also wanted to leave because we were losing and the game was boring. When he stated lets go home tutu, his brother Gabe who is fourteen said “NO”. He said “We’ll leave when the last Warrior leaves the field.” The players need to know that we are supporting them! Imua Na Koa Anuenue.

  104. Warbow November 5, 2015 2:54 pm

Forget about Pat Hill. His offenses were just as bad and boring as Chow’s.

  105. kimo browner November 5, 2015 2:55 pm

@93. I was responding to 67 who mentioned 2014. Thanks for the correction 🙂

@95.Cocobean. If Matlin goes alone on his decision the only folks he will answer to are the public. Indeed, their vote is the only one that counts! He needs to understand that under the rules of accountability. Otherwise he is truly naive. He is much smarter than that.

  106. cocobean November 5, 2015 3:01 pm

For me it’s more about how much d0 62-63 year olds have left in the tank. It’s going to take a lot of energy to get football off of life support and a lot of energy to keep it off. Matlin has to make a decision based on what he sees a coach can do in the short term and 3-5 years down the road. The best short term solution may not be the best longer term solution.

  107. Former UH Athlete November 5, 2015 3:05 pm

On a separate note, just to illustrate the comedy show that is UH:

Following a two year delay, the inaugural space rocket designed by UH, The Super Strypi, launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility (Kauai)… and failed shortly after launch.

    Wait for the punchline…

    [Quote from Article]
The University of Hawaii, one of the partners in the launch, said in a statement that “despite the vehicle issue, the project is still a tremendous success.” [end quote]

  108. Come on, man! November 5, 2015 3:06 pm

    101. but warbow… he’s a QB GOD!!!! we’ll be known as RBU: running back university! pat hill is the young and upcoming, uptempo, high octane offensive coach of the future!

  109. Former UH Athlete November 5, 2015 3:09 pm

RE: Rocket launch failure… Maybe someone should give UH a participation trophy.

#104. LMAO. Your timing is perfect! Comment of the day!

  112. Down with... November 5, 2015 3:23 pm

#97…I like Jeezy he has a heart for the UH team and football in general. Very good recruiting insights. But sometimes he tends to over step his boundaries in respect to people having opinions and fans “just being fans”. You both have great arguments…but the main argument should be “are you going to the final 3 home games?” cause if you are then it doesn’t matter what either of you think, you both support UH and football and that’s all that matters. Go Bows !!!!

  113. cocobean November 5, 2015 3:25 pm

kimo. You missed my point. I’m not saying he doesn’t hear what folks are telling him. He knows, like most anyone who reads the papers, watches the tv or listen to the radio that the public is treating this like a popularity contest. Everyone who is interested in UH football seems to have a favorite or two as to who will get the job. Many aren’t shy as to who they are “voting” for as evidenced by this and Reardon’s blog. The call the AD show on Tuesday was all about people calling in “voting” for their guy as if the position would be filled by whoever got the most votes.
Matlin made that comment not to put anyone in their place or to say their “vote” didn’t matter. His broader picture view is he knows people care about the program and many are passionate in their believe that “they” know who the best man for the job is. He knows no matter who he picks there’s going to be a certain amount of people who will be disappointed with the choice. He was around when Chow was hired he knows the fans emotions are running a lot higher now than at that time.

  114. z November 5, 2015 3:32 pm

    Bring back the Sun God.

  115. Come on, man! November 5, 2015 3:36 pm

dave matlin will make his own decision. rantings posted by anonymous internet fans on message boards won’t sway him, if he even reads them. our opinions on hiring decisions hold very little to no weight, regardless of how smart or important we think we are.

    http://www.mwcconnection.com/2015/11/4/9672486/hawaii-football-coaching-search-june-jones

although this link says that it’ll probably be june jones, regardless of any other young 63 year old quarterback gods with impressive mustaches waiting in the wings. i’d rather see a young up and comer, but i’d be okay with this.

  116. SteveM November 5, 2015 3:36 pm

Hmmm.. Pat Hill? Reminds me of his relationship with June Jones…or it least what I surmised.

Pat was going to be visiting the islands (daughters marriage?) and asked June Jones if he could observe his training camp procedures. June said yes. The media and fans were frantic– allowing a great rival into your own camp? June replies, “No big deal–over the years there is not much he hasn’t seen of us yet. So Hill hung around a week.

What caught my attention was when we played games against each other that were not close–up by 30, we are second and goal on the two with 30 seconds left and passing to score. No knee. We looked horrible one year it was a 40 point lead for Fresno in the 3rd quarter and he throws a hail mary to score again.

Now coaches have to look like sportsmen and be politically correct and all that, but here were two coaches who played each other–and only each other–“lizard brained”. Stomp, win, stop me if you can. Good to see lizard brain once in a while. 🙂

  117. kimo browner November 5, 2015 3:37 pm

best wishes to Chris Naeole and his team this week. Just one comment: I like his aggressiveness in designating his starting QB. That is the way he coaches–show me. I am also hoping Chris is equally stern on his OL that allows sacks.

  118. Paper Crane November 5, 2015 3:52 pm

Looks like UH got a cold case issue that was shut closed when JJ left for the head coach position at SMU;…he’s old job is not anymore his to return to like it’s not that simple and not fair for those who also have that dream to lead the Warriors; winning numbers from the passed cannot be duplicated like all things are not the same and them numbers doesn’t alway guarantee victory;…so what JJ is doing at St Louis is great for them like one on one instructions give him full span of control like no one to tell him otherwise;…that’s where he should stay put like with them old school guys.

  119. DrakeRamore November 5, 2015 3:53 pm

I am not sure why people have been advocating for Rich Miano, someone who has no coordinator or HC experience to our coach. If being on the coaching staff in Hawaii’s glory years is all that matters than why not advocate for the other position coaches on JJ’s old staff. The answer? because Rich Miano is in our face all the time and on local news reports, and is a regular on the sports Animals show. He is a very good self-promoter. Frankly, I am not a fan of his. But more to the point, he is not experienced for the job.

Another weird thing I see many people commenting on is wanting to see JJ as HC and Rolo as his OC. But that does not make sense. Can anyone recall who JJ hired as OC during his previous tenure at Hawaii? I cannot, because JJ was essentially the OC as well with maybe employing a lap dog as OC.

Let’s try to be more intelligent and thoughtful fans. This kinda stuff is why fan phones and most espn radio show calls are so hard to listen to.

  120. cocobean November 5, 2015 3:57 pm

One thing I know about JJ is here he had a fairly stable QB situation. Timmy started for 4 years, Colt 3, Rolo and Robinson one each. I’m too lazy to look up what his QB sitation was in SMU. Did he have the same stability there as he did here. His back ups here were pretty solid also.

  121. Boolakanaka November 5, 2015 4:01 pm

The issuing of “love letters” is a stark and sober reminder that loyalty is a two-way street. I have no umbrage whatsoever if a coach leaves for a better opportunity–as a school will fire you anytime they see appropriate.

  122. AdmrVT November 5, 2015 4:03 pm

#103. You are of course assuming there will be a need for a “longer term solution” if/when the short team solution is a failure — again. I think we are running out of chances to be right.

  123. seewhy November 5, 2015 4:29 pm

    116.

    SMU QB’s

2008 – Bo Levi Mitchell (11 Starts), Logan Turner (1 start)
2009 – Bo Levi Mitchell (7 Starts), Kyle Padron (6 starts), Braden Smith (wildcat)
2010 – Kyle Padron (14 starts), J.J. McDermott (back up)
2011 – J.J. McDermott (13 starts), Kyle Padron (back up)

    definitely.

  125. Ipu Man November 5, 2015 4:53 pm

  126. Ipu Man November 5, 2015 4:54 pm

  127. cappie the dog November 5, 2015 5:06 pm

Hawaii is more than likely not Dino Babers’ dream job(Randall Edsall: Maryland, really?), but IT DOESN’T HURT TO ASK.

  128. cappie the dog November 5, 2015 5:10 pm

    Surely, Dino Babers in Jones-like.

Late fourth quarter against the Bobcats, up three posessions, and BG is still throwing the ball.

Ohio showed good sportsmanship by not taking umbrage and retaliating against the perception of a team that’s running up the score.

  129. Brad November 5, 2015 5:20 pm

Whoever is the new coach probably will have to put on two hats as HC/OC in order to make it work financially. If you can’t get a guy for $500,000 then add a $150-200,000 OC salary to the head coach or as Matlin says to use stewardship and use that money to get new football equipment or more training tables.
Which leads me to believe he will pick either Rolo or JJ. And if he’s thinking long term he will pick Rolo. He seems like he will stick around even if he is successful and keep building the pride back to UH. He gets some good Hawaii players to Nevada. I’m sure he can keep more at home.

  130. pokesquid November 5, 2015 6:06 pm

Here is a possible HAPPY CONTINUANCE for most of the current UH staff.

Things could easily fall into place for June Jones:

If JJ is hired 1/2 of the problem with his staff is possibly solved by him deciding to keep the current defensive staff on board…I mean, they all know him, played for him and coached with him.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if JJ did this…I mean DC Mason was his DC at SMU…Elimimian and Samuseva played for him…Gouveia has the top level and championship experience and knowledge on all football levels.

Keeping the current defensive staff would keep the continuity and familiarity on that side of the ball, which is very important since JJ is an “Offensive Guy.”

Just a note: If he was to bring back Mac, instead for DC, a 3rd time…I would be all for that as well.

    BOOM: 1/2 the problem solved.

As for the offensive side we could get Timmy Chang to be the QB coach (cause we know Jones will call the plays and be the OC)…we could get someone like Stutzman to be the WR coach…And my choice is to keep Naeole for the OL.

Just a note: I say Chang instead of Rolo because Chang was with Jones at SMU and I believe Chang has a closer relationship to Jones than Rolo does…Plus Chang has more NAME RECOGNITION than Rolo does…which could help to land that next Big-Time time passing QB.

BOOM: the other 1/2 of the problem solved.

Lastly…maybe Miano can be hired to run the special teams and continue to work with the walk-ons at the same time.

And BOOM: Right there problem solved and situation with staff solved before January 1st.

Do you how important and incredibility beneficial this happening would be for our program moving forward to success and respectability in a Fast like manner.

If this is done all our coaches need to do is concentrate on RECRUITING…RECRUITING…& RECRUITING!

Matlin has to see the benefits of something like this possibly happening.

    What U think?

  131. cocobean November 5, 2015 6:16 pm

Switching gears. Anybody else going to see the basketbows play tonight? Want to get a feel to Ganot’s coaching style and in a small part see if Matlin made a good choice on this one.

  132. Frannyk November 5, 2015 6:16 pm

All of you naysayers seem to forget that JJ took the same players from a Von Appen 0-12 team to 9-4 the very next year! WITH THE SAME PLAYERS!

Some have said he’s a lazy recruiter. That is truly a glass half empty mentality. How about the great players that DID come to our program while he was coach?

So many of the players that played for him developed into overachievers in college football and some of those same players even went on to great professional careers. JJ knows how to develop players! He knows how to evaluate talent.

I agree that he has some excess baggage, but so do I. And so do all of you!

He’s a proven WINNER! And I for one am in his corner.

  133. z November 5, 2015 6:21 pm

    Go get em Coach Chris!

    Go get em Warriors!

It is possible. It is up to you.

  134. Whats up November 5, 2015 6:39 pm

    jeezy,

I remember June Jones and his staff landing some really good recruits… ask McMackin what happened when June Jones recruits like Greg Salas, Kealaloha Pilares and most others graduated after the 2010 season. 2011 was the year it was almost all Macks recruits in the water down WAC with no Boise State and the talent and coaching got exposed.

So we can all complain about how lazy we perceive June Jones is as a recruiter, but I think June Jones was a better evaluator of talent of what type a recruit can play in his style of spread the field offense. And June Jones always seemed to get a defensive coordinator that could eval recruits for the defense side like Mack and Glanville. Yes, McMackin was a great defensive Coordinator and could eval and defensive recruit.

I say “No” to the Pat Hill style of Pro Set offense just like Norm Chow! If you want to hire Pat Hill as a recruiting coordinator coach, then sure!

  135. kimo browner November 5, 2015 6:45 pm

pokesquid. You are entertaining for sure. The bottom line after following a sequence of complex assumptions is you support JJ. I agree with your ultimate selection.
JJ is the man to get this program on its feet again without the usual hiccups.

  136. Frannyk November 5, 2015 6:50 pm

Pat Hill? Really? Three yards and a cloud of dust? No thanks.

  137. el burro sabio November 5, 2015 6:53 pm

  138. pokesquid November 5, 2015 6:59 pm

I don’t think Come on, man is being annoying.

I think many would agree that he is bringing up some very good points and good information.

  139. Moocher November 5, 2015 7:02 pm

    Cal lee head coach
    JJ offensive coordinator/assistant head coach
Timmy chang or Rolo assistant offensive coordinator/QB coach
    Craig stutz receivers coach
special teams coach scott harding (teach how to lateral or drop kick like rugby on kick off returns :P)
    Big Chris O-line coach
    Nate Ilaoa running backs coach

Defence…no need, we going have 100 points every game

  140. 808 November 5, 2015 7:13 pm

If JJ is selected, is he willing to take a huge cut in salary from what he had at SMU?

If he really is the front runner and it is his job to lose, then the only thing I can see him losing to another applicant is if he ask for something like $2 million per year in base salary.

  141. Willie November 5, 2015 7:25 pm

So far in the 1st half of the Nevada @ Fresno State game, the Bulldogs look like a football team and with a young QB at the helm. Have seen a lot of MWC teams play and unfortunately the Warriors play is at the bottom of the heap. Yeah I know Chow is gone, but the collateral damage he created is still there.

  142. oneseason November 5, 2015 7:38 pm

UH tried to go cheap with Chow, and it cost them dearly in wins, ticket sales, fan interest, and probably recruits. With Chow, UH could cut their head coach salary in half, and use his great Offensive Coordinator and Quarterback development experience to save big bucks on the coaching staff. And here we about 4 years later with 15 thousand season tickets sold. I hope UH does not make the same mistake this time. Spend your money on a quality coaching staff now rather than try to deal with the dilemma of either more losing seasons (going through assistant coaches like tissues) or having to buyout another coach. On top of that, the Football TV contract will be up in June 2020. Having multiple winning seasons and great ratings would help lay the groundwork for those negotiations.

  143. pokesquid November 5, 2015 7:41 pm

Stop with all the Pat Hill nonsense!

If we hire Pat Hill we might have well just kept Chow…What, are we suppose to wait another 4 years or until someone jumps off the top of Aloha Stadium with a sign on his or her back reading…”That type of freakin’ offense don’t work here, STUPID!”

No more Pro Style Offenses minded coaches!

This is the age of the Spread Offenses and even the NFL is joining the ride.

No more “pro-style offensive minded” coaches…No more “defensive minded coaches” for HC, unless his OC is someone like Chad Morris, etc.

We need someone who is an “Offensive Minded” coach who has a proven system and who likes to run the score up on everyone and anyone…Might as well cover the spread at the same time, if we going to win, right.

  144. pokesquid November 5, 2015 8:04 pm

    130…

I beleive we need a quick turn around and Jones give us the best chance at doing that…I don’t think we can wait for another 3 to 4 years of rebuilding to happen, if it even happens….We no more money and we no more patience…We need to get out of the cellar fast or we will be there for a long time.

Jones may have done hings in the past…which people keep saying…But, I don’t care what happened at SMU…Screw them!

All I care about is Hawaii…and if I felt he was truly going to hurt us instead of help us, then I would be totally against having him back…But things and his actions/statements after coming home, along with how things are lining up for his possible staff…plus the fact that he lives here and knows “our culture” just makes me feel that he is on a mission to bring us back and that he is not going to take this opportunity for granted.

BTW….Braddah Kimo…its squid season…so no forget to pound the tako for the upcoming festivities….Aloha.

  145. hitmanhart November 5, 2015 8:12 pm

to me it’s jjto lose job !!

  146. winning November 5, 2015 9:29 pm

No offense can survive 48% passing with more INT’s than TD’s! All this verbiage is nonsense! QB is key and JJ can get that type of QB. And stop talking about Georgia game in 2007. They were offsides at least 5 times (should have put in Graunke tho). I bet u JJ is licking his chops with future and present QB’s that he might be able to work with. JJ would fill the seats and pay per view will skyrocket! And I will not miss any games!!

  147. Jeezy33 November 5, 2015 9:30 pm

    109. I go to every home game whether I like the coach or not. I’ll be at the unlv game as well. Anyone that wants to take a shot with me while shooting craps downtown can hit me up if they want. I’ll give them my inside info on factual info from good sources too.

I wish I had the ignore option on this blog because I wouldn’t have to read the bs that comes out of come on mans keyboard. I’ve explained my reasons why I don’t want jones that goes beyond his lackluster offense. He has serious off field issues combined with his tea, not performing at SMU.

  148. Jeezy33 November 5, 2015 9:33 pm

    129. Kealoha Pilares signed with Air Force and transferred to Hawaii. I tend not to credit coaches recruiting transfers considering transfers choose to leave where they are at. I’ve said all along, June is good at evaluating. But hes still s lazy recruiter like previous poster mentioned.

  149. Jeezy33 November 5, 2015 9:34 pm

If you want to compare June jones recruiting vs pat hill, it’s not even close.
June does have a more exciting offense. Not denying that, but his offense is much easier to prepare for now than it was at Hawaii.

  150. Jeezy33 November 5, 2015 9:39 pm

Also 129. You realize the pro set offense scored points in year 2 of. Norm Chow? And you do realize Norm Chow tried switching to a spread type offense in which he changed his identity and failed the past 2 years?

Executing is a lot more important than the actual offense you run.

Look at the top teams in the MW. You do realize the championship game is probably Boise vs SDSU and both teams run pro style offenses. Jim Mcelwain ran a pro set offense at Colorado St. Watch Utah ST. Play. They run a similar offense to Hawaii. They just execute better.

  151. winning November 5, 2015 9:45 pm

As far as with age, just because one is 62 don’t mean jack! He will be smart enough to have an heir apparent if needed if he goes down! Since when 62 is old? As Jesse Sapolu said he can go “6, 7 yrs”. Easy!

  152. cocobean November 5, 2015 9:55 pm

If anyone is interested when I left the bb game w/30 sec left in overtime the Bows were inbounding w/ a 4 pt lead. The Bows were trailing by 11 at the half and down by as much as 21 early on.

  153. tom-warriornation November 5, 2015 10:01 pm

Since we are starting a new era in UH Football, can we start a new tradition of waving green towels on our road games? And of course, everyone wear green UH gear or anything green.

This great “visual effect” should pump up our players; and we all know that football is a very emotional game–especially if the game is very close in the 4th quarter. Let’s do this starting at UNLV everyone!!!

Wouldn’t it be awesome if we can have Hawaii fans do something like this–and let’s do neon or bright green towel waving (since dark green towels will be hard to stand out)–these towels should be roughly 11 by 16 inches in size; and you can get these size towels at Ikea for $1.99:

    http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10295412/

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmgCQduUHWE

I got almost 400 Hawaii fans this Sat at UNLV sitting at the 50 yd line right behind our Warrior bench; so don’t tell me it won’t make a difference–it will if everyone does this!

  154. Jeezy33 November 5, 2015 10:03 pm

    148. Lol. Gotta respect your enthusiasm. If you’re towels are Kelly green where it can be noticed, I’ll wave them for you,p. The dark forest green is too dark and waste of my time

  155. cocobean November 5, 2015 10:05 pm

I see the to Jones or not to Jones debate is still going. No matter who is picked there’s going to be a lot of disappointed people.

  156. Dano November 5, 2015 10:09 pm

Nevada beats Fresno St tonight, 30-16. Fresno St, is now 2-7, same record as UH.

  157. cocobean November 5, 2015 10:19 pm

    808. Rest assured that JJ would give Matlin a home town discount for a chance at a second go around. It’s not like there’s a lot of schools lining up to bid for his services. His age and the way he left SMU would be hard for any AD to sell to his administration and fan base….not unless his name is Matlin.

  158. seewhy November 5, 2015 10:22 pm

    RE: tom-warriornation #148

I love your determination! I sure wish I could go to the game this weekend. If I was going, I would be waving that towel with you! Patty Mills style!

  159. RB November 5, 2015 10:23 pm

I remember saying Pat Hill’s name 2 days ago and only Jeezy33 agreed with me. And look at today’s post Pat Hill’s name all over the board. IMHO I think PH will be in the running for the HC job.

  160. Jeezy33 November 5, 2015 10:36 pm

    150. All that matters is the next coach wins games. I think jones can definitely make a quicker turn around than most. But I’m not sure he can sustain success and build a culture 3 years+ without his off field drama..
It’s a given that ticket sales will go up if hired. But I want success beyond 1-2 years. I would punt complain if jones got hired, but o just feel like there are better candidates interested. That includes Miano, salvaea, sitake, and hill if applied. I don’t buy into Rolo as a ceo of a football team.

  161. pokesquid November 5, 2015 10:39 pm

Another thing I like if Coach Jones takes over is that I believe the remaining player will be able to transition and fit into his system much better than they did in Chows system…especially in the skill positions.

-I can see Ewaliko (jr), Collie (soph), Ursua (rfr), Bernard (sr) and Harris (sr) playing in the slot positions.

-I can see Kemp (sr), Barker (jr), Ewaliko (jr), Stubs (soph), Haynes (sr), Hagger (jr)…and hopefully Timoteo playing the outside receiver positions.

-I can see Davis (sr), St. Juste (sr), Harris (sr) and Lakalaka (sr) playing in the backfield.

-I can see Zwahlen (rfr) and hopefully Milton playing QB…I wish we had a gauge on Reilly, but until he is given a chance we won’t know.

After that I cannot see anything else….So, yes, recruiting is going to be needed to stock the offensive skilled positions further, especially at RB and QB…Not mention getting a good receivers coach.

But to me, I am trying to look at the positives and I think this is a good start if any.

    What U guys think?

  162. RB November 5, 2015 10:41 pm

Oh well I guess I was wrong. Pat Hill want’s JJ to get the job. But then again this could all be a front and PH is in the loop to become HC.

    http://www.fresnobee.com/sports/college/mountain-west/fresno-state/bulldogs-football/article43350219.html

  163. Jeezy33 November 5, 2015 11:14 pm

If jones got hired and could get Hill to be OL coach and recruiting coordinator, I would honestly be happy. I think the connections Hill has in the Central Valley would be enormous to Hawaii. So much talent that gets unnoticed. I would assume a guy like Colin Kaepernick is a PAC 12 lock if he wasn’t hidden in the Central Valley.

  164. pokesquid November 5, 2015 11:17 pm

    Other offensive skilled guys…

I think Unga and Torres will be going to the defensive side…Both have received numerous honors in HS at the LB positions.

Camanse-Stevens is a big receiver with speed…could be someone that flourishes on the outside in Jones system.

As for Woosley I like the kid, but I am not sure he would flourish in Jones system…I know that he is a Mac recruit, but I don’t think his read progressions is fast and his arm just doesn’t seem live enough…but I am no QB guru.

Still though…another thing I like is how Jones makes his QBs practice throwing all day everyday day until their arms fall off…All that to create the strength, accuracy and important muscle memory that is needed to play in his system.

Come game day next season, whomever is coach, I hope QB Zwahlen is starting and lives up to his #11 ESPN top 300 ranking and the Elite 11 status he garnered coming out of HS.

  165. RB November 5, 2015 11:20 pm

It would be nice to have PH on staff as any coach but Please No JJ as HC. Maybe Miano but not JJ.

  166. 808warriorfan November 5, 2015 11:31 pm

All this talk about former Fresno State coach Pat Hill … I don’t think he’d be a good fit at UH as his “smash mouth” brand doesn’t fit the type of players we could get. He is a good analyzer of talent and a good recruiter. My thought is FSU could be in the market for a new coach after this season so I think they would look to Pat Hill as a possible replacement

  167. cocobean November 5, 2015 11:37 pm

poke. St Juste hasn’t played this year I think he may have a redshirt year to use.

Knowing JJ he’d probably audition some of the TEs for the big back position. At SMU he did use a TE and H back at times.

More fuel to the fire. I remember him telling Curran early on in his stay here that he revises his play book by about 25% every year. Also a caller got Curran a bit flustered by asking “on a scale of 1 to ten what would say JJ’s ego is?” Bobby had to dance the around the question by saying something like to be successful a coach needs a “healthy” ego. IWWThateme mentioned on a Leahey and Leahey show JJ did say he wanted to get back into coaching and he had some new ideas–try and google it, I did. He was 1-11 his first year at SMU. He left money on the table by retiring rather than getting fired.

  168. pokesquid November 5, 2015 11:38 pm

    157…

I think Hill is smart enough to know that if it came down to him or Jones for HC that he would lose to Jones…If Jones wasn’t in the mix then that would be something else.

The smart thing for Hill to do, which it seems like he is doing with his comments in that article, is to edify and promote Jones…if he seriously wants to get back in and be a part of his staff…That could happen and I would also gladly take Hill as an assistant to Jones…But not as a HC.

  169. pokesquid November 5, 2015 11:59 pm

    cocobean…

Yeah I believe you are correct about St Juste…That’s good news to hear as that is one senior heavy RB squad for next season.

As for the TEs…I was hoping that Jones would have some form of spread scheme like NE uses where they split Gronk out wide…but I had no information to confirm he did.

If he does have a TE package, I wonder if it is enough or smart to keep the talents of Unga and Torres on the offensive side though…Anyways as long as it is not the old R-n-S of the past, which I believe it won’t be, I am open and excited to see what’s up his sleeve.

  170. cocobean November 6, 2015 12:19 am

poke, every coach who developed his own offense keeps updating it to keep ahead of the curve. Paul Johnson’s offense at GTECH is unrecognizable to what he ran here. JJ had a 1400 yd runner one year at SMU. I not worried about whether his offense is outdated I’m more worried about him having the right triggerman to run it. Also worried about his energy level. One thing I don’t think he’ll ever lose is his ability to evaluate a player’s strong and weak points.

  171. FearGod November 6, 2015 4:25 am

Is Coach playing Luke Shawley this weekend

  172. cappie the dog November 6, 2015 6:05 am

    cocobean-

    I went to the game.

In overtime, with seven seconds left, the Hawaii inbounder fumbled the basketball. It should have been a turnover and possession given to Hawaii-Hilo.

But the refs let it go.

The refs wanted to go home.

    The Vulcans deserved better.

Even though it was an exhibition, Hilo was playing to win.

    Hawaii, too.

Lots of bodies on the hardwood.

    Headbands were tossed.

  173. cappie the dog November 6, 2015 6:07 am

Issac Fleming was on the bench.

He looked happy to be there.

    But where was Mike Thomas?

  174. cappie the dog November 6, 2015 6:08 am

    Chaminade, not Hilo, of course.

  175. cappie the dog November 6, 2015 6:16 am

    I hope Stepteau’s four threes weren’t a fluke.

    Hawaii has no pure shooters.

As my cousin pointed out mid-game, that’s why Benjy Taylor pushed the ball.

Stefan Jankovich is not a center.

I wish Ganot recruited one, and allow the Missouri transfer to live out his Dirk Nowitzki fantasies out on the perimeter.

    He is a finesse guy.

Around the rim, after grabbing the offensive rebound, instead of flushing it down, he missed a point blank lay-up.

Hawaii still allows a lot of open threes.

  176. oneseason November 6, 2015 6:16 am

Kevin Clune might still be a “steal” for the Rainbow Warrior HC. He is working and winning now. He could bring in coordinators and position coaches with local recruiting knowledge and past successes with (JJ) or against (PH) UH. I am biased towards taking a risk on an unproven up and coming coach for HC, as long as they (and UH) have the sense to surround themselves with an experienced staff. … http://westhawaiitoday.com/sports/local-sports/wes-nakama-hiring-kevin-clune-could-be-steal-uh-football

  177. cappie the dog November 6, 2015 6:22 am

I liked the reference to “The Onion” in today’s DR column.

But for it to be Onion-like, the news has to be funny news.

e.g. “Hawaii hires Lou Holtz as new head coach.”

  178. Come on, Man! November 6, 2015 6:27 am

” You realize the pro set offense scored points in year 2 of. Norm Chow? And you do realize Norm Chow tried switching to a spread type offense in which he changed his identity and failed the past 2 years?”

uh… are you saying that norm chow should’ve stuck to whatever variation of a pro-style offense he had in year 2, and the reason why the offense imploded was because he switched to a spread?

is this not contrary to 90% of the things you were posting about for the past two years?

“Executing is a lot more important than the actual offense you run.”

okay. so i’m assuming that the run and shoot is a fine offense, because execution of the run and shoot is MUCH more important, right? so did we finally drop this “defenses have caught up to the run and shoot” canard?

after all, it seems you went from “chow’s run and punt is terrible. pro-style is outdated and won’t work in the college game at hawaii with inferior athletes” to “OMG. pat hill is qb god! yes YES! pro-style DOES work! look at the offense under norm chow in year 2 and look what happened when he switched to the spread! the only thing that matters is execution!”

and then”june jones can turn around the team in a short time, but not long term,” and then vague statements about off field issues that are apparently toxic to the program.

jeezy, why you so mean to me? why is it every time i say something, and the only thing i’m attacking are your ARGUMENTS, you get super personal and dismissive and just go “i’m right. come on, man is ignorant and annoying.”

please don’t be like that. i only want to be your friend.

for the record: if it’s between pat hill and june jones, i would go with june jones. runs a pass wacky spread that has success with lesser talent (UH didn’t really have very many blue chip recruits. june jones and his staff DEVELOPED them into solid collegiate players and NFL draftees). I’d rather not see another pro-style attack, and just in general, fresno football was boring to watch. and if we’re talking about coaching, june jones had more success in hawaii and about the same amount (win/loss record-wise) as pat hill in fresno, and JJ has a winning record against pat hill coached fresno teams.

both are outstanding coaches, but you know…. i remember jeezy saying “if JJ was such a great coach and offensive genius, why didn’t he get all kinds of job offers from other schools after he left SMU??” then i don’t see why he doesn’t apply the same standard to pat hill.

so much hypocrisy. so much jeezy. so much. so much.

i do think JJ can turn around the program to respectability, and based on his history, his floor may be 7-6 seasons, which is fine. and from there, build.

  179. Old School Dave November 6, 2015 6:59 am

Local “Maui Onion” story: UH to hire (soon to be) former Georgia coach Mark Richt. 🙂

  180. Old School Dave November 6, 2015 7:06 am

Going get some huhu people if a particular or favorite candidate isn’t hired by UH. Hope it doesn’t turn counterproductive for the program. The low salary package for the assistants at $1.1 million is troubling, and seems to be overlooked. Hope the boosters can come through. They need experienced college assistants.

  181. Shoko November 6, 2015 7:54 am

I think money will play a big part on who UH can and will hire. Hopefully, they can include revenue-sharing to make the position more attractive. Got to get creative on this hire.

  182. mytake November 6, 2015 8:24 am

UH basketball barely beats Chaminade. Get ready for a long year.

  183. Andrew November 6, 2015 8:44 am

    177.

It’s an exhibition game. Don’t know why so many people are hitting the panic button already. Keep in mind Chaminade is not exactly a door mat team either. I’m sure we won’t be surprised again if they give teams trouble in the Maui again this year.

  184. makalapua November 6, 2015 8:51 am

Here’s my take on the coaching search…JJ left in 2007 as soon as he was offered twice the amount of money he made at UH though almost half of that was paid by the boosters/Nakoa. He has a semi-successful tenure at SMU then decides to resign after two games into a new season due to “personal reasons.” Who’s to say he won’t pick up and split again if he’s not happy with the administration, facilities and whatever else (girlfriends ?)

Besides, he is old school coaching. Today’s game requires new blood with progressive thinking, possibly younger coaches with some head coaching experience and success. The Norm Chow selection was very probably guided by big money backers and politics. Time time to start clean, Matlin!

  185. What??? November 6, 2015 9:24 am

Depends if Isaac Fleming plays this year. Stay tuned.

  186. seewhy November 6, 2015 9:33 am

    179.

Fleming will be the deal breaker.

  187. Creative721 November 6, 2015 9:41 am

@Andrew: Well Chaminade is normally a door mat team when it comes to the Maui Invitational. At this point, it’s hard to say if Hawaii just plain sucks or Chaminade was really that good or something in between. I can’t say that I have seen a team like Chaminade score close to 100 points against UH in recent memory, so it’s possible that they may be that good. Then again, maybe UH was just lacking in the defense department and they didn’t shoot very well from the outside in the first half. Outside shooting is going to be a concern for UH unless someone besides Stepteau can drain 3’s with consistency. Hopefully, Fleming is coming back as they need his ability to create his own shot.

  188. NorthShoreFan November 6, 2015 9:43 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

Guud Luck to the Akamai one. Roll them cubes!

I heard the term, “worked like we drew it up”…I guess every play works if it’s executed as diagramed. Problem is the defense worked because it also “worked as we drew it up”…lol

Have fun today boyz and girlz.

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  189. Andrew November 6, 2015 9:49 am

    181.

They normally don’t do well there but they have taken down big name programs as well. I just don’t personally don’t put much stock into pre season/exhibition games. While they say that they put the same effort into every game, I just think the approach to a regular season game that counts vs exhibition game is different. There were some years where they smoke HPU/Hilo but then struggle during the season.

  190. NorthShoreFan November 6, 2015 9:49 am

#181, did you ever trip over a door mat? Dem Swords wen trip a few big boyz. No worries, we get um..

  191. FearGod November 6, 2015 9:55 am

new post up…. JACKPOT…The beat writer did it…UH loses it’s beat writer due to personal reasons

  192. cocobean November 6, 2015 10:25 am

Ganot was hired in April, I’ll give him a pass on recruiting. He lost more talent than he added and it showed. We’re still weak on interior defense and rebounding. Thomas and Fleming should give us a different look on both ends than we showed tonight. The positives were the half court offense was more structured there was a lot of catch and shoot opportunities and the defense created turnovers when they needed them
