Ease for efforts

When Eric Okasaki started at UH nearly 40 years ago, George Ariyoshi was governor, Booga-Booga had its original members, and the only rail was the one at Pearlridge.

In other words, Okasaki brings old-school values to the school, one of which is an athletic-department-bonding session dressed as a potluck. Okasaki is the organizer of the annual event — held after work hours, of course — that brings together administrators, staffers, coaches, custodians and their families for fun, food … and serious games of dodgeball.

It also marks the end of a (relatively) less-hectic part of the year. Things will get busy with next week’s opening of training camp. For a few hours, there is no talk of the NCAA, budgets or UH’s new football uniforms.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Any pictures of the event, ST?

When do the new uniforms get shown to the public ?

  4. bowwar August 1, 2015 10:13 am

Eric O has been a reliable part of UH athletics over the years…

  5. Inyoface August 1, 2015 10:46 am

Just read Colorado will have a 13 game season with no bye week also.

Eric Okasaki and his staff are the unsung heroes of UH Athletics that keep the players going and help them recover from injury. I remember when he started and I think that Al Martindale was the head trainer. Before Martingale was Dean Adams. Showing my age.

I remember going to see Booga-Booga at the Territorial Tavern in the old Transportation Building at the bottom of Bishop Street in 1976. Hilarious.

    Good morning everyone!

Eric is a great guy who has to deal with so much that the general public never hears about. I wouldn’t want to be at the end of one of his dodge ball throws if the potluck was in season.

Can anybody confirm that Mililani football put a whipping on Kahuku last night? I heard through 3 person.

  13. papajoe2 August 1, 2015 12:34 pm

I heard it through 3rd person information.

SAT: I think Colorado can play 13 games because they are playing at Hawaii.

  18. Hodad August 1, 2015 2:19 pm

I’ve always admired how much respect trainers from other schools have for Eric who is one of the really good guys.

  19. azwarrior22 August 1, 2015 2:59 pm

    ST,

Any more late surprises before we open training camp???

P.S. I recall you mention some blogs ago about Professor Mak. I had him for ECON 150 and ECON 151. I struggled in ECON 150, so I got so pissed off that I worked my arse off and aced ECON 151 🙂

  20. st. anthony trojan August 1, 2015 3:29 pm

Awwww ok nasti… means ne one that play Hawaiii can play 13 games huh ??

That is a pretty good incentive for teams to come here…

Then me not understand why we have a problems filling the schedule ?

  21. Willie August 1, 2015 3:49 pm

Eric is a great and dedicated guy that really cared about the athlete’s well being. He used to tape me up when he was a “trainee” under Dean Adams leadership. Glad to know he is still going strong. He’s come a long way and now the “Trainer” for the young ones.

  22. Boolakanaka August 1, 2015 5:53 pm

Holomua Eric! I got many a tape job from that fine fella…

  23. islandman August 1, 2015 6:00 pm

It’s something like non-conference teams don’t want to come here on a week when they don’t have a conference game to play and then have to travel a long way back and get ready for a conference game.

  24. Dennis Halloran August 1, 2015 6:41 pm

If we are no longer able to participate as of August 3,
    It has been fun
Besides my family in the islands I have enjoyed knowing all the tsaikos

  25. Warrior Dave August 1, 2015 11:08 pm

To make playing in Hawaii more attractive, Matlin needs to get NCAA approval to start the season at least 1 week earlier. Very few programs are willing to play straight for 13 weeks. Plus UH would also welcome a bye to heal up.

I won’t be subscribing since i currently live and go back and forth in Singapore and the philippines. St Anthony Trojan thx for the heads up…shoot me an email at vierrap@gmail.com maybe we can meet up in Phils one day.

Its a shame that now a lot of people won’t be able to voice their opinions. Eventually you may see only the same 10-20 people posting to the blog and the flavour of this blog will die off. Not saying anything is wrong with that except to say the variety of viewpoints will die off.

Anyways, thanks, it still is a good blog and info outlet 🙂

If your family subscribes to the SA, have someone create a log-in.

Then see if you can use their log-in, from LAX. Who knows, it might work.

  28. wow August 2, 2015 8:09 am

#26, There are other options for people to voice their opinion. Hopefully this will
help the Star Advertiser with the moderation of the blog and filter out the “crazy” no logic, no /incorrect facts and “Broken Record” posters who repeat the same rant over and over.

  29. oneseason August 2, 2015 8:55 am

As long as SA keeps adds off the blog pages, I could see them make a case for limiting comments to subscribers. But lets dump the “Trending Articles” and stuff. Let’s not have the “cake and eat it too” marketing strategy.
