Wednesday ramblings
• Long-snapper Luke Ingram is unique in that he throws a football left-handed and a baseball right-handed.
• Middle linebacker Brashton Satele undergoes shoulder surgery today in Los Angeles. He arrived in L.A. yesterday morning, and met with the surgeon. He’ll be back in town Friday.
• There’s a reason the Warriors don’t need to practice too much at Aloha Stadium. The lights there are high enough and set in such a way that they are not a distraction for punt returners or receivers. The Warriors practice there tomorrow night.
• The biggest adjustment is that Aloha Stadium’s FieldTurf — baked by the sun and worn down from several years of use — has fast traction. For the Warriors, who practice either on the grass field or Cooke/Ching field’s thick surface, playing at the stadium is the equivalent of removing leg weights. The receivers are going to be much faster.
• The looooong K5 production truck has arrived. The truck, built in Utah, is here for the next four months to shoot Rainbow Wahine volleyball and football pay-per-view events in HD. K5’s production crew started the training session yesterday.

HiHo…
garret, regarding your article on OSU recruiting paaluhi. i wonder who that coach is. bc i know OSU (cav) was recruiting Josiah Chong Tim out of waianae last year, but he ended up at Wyoming.
Good Morning Tsaikoland! It’s hump day…halfway to da weekend. Hope everyone has a good one.
letsgowarriors.
and reading the blog on mike cavanaugh and his recruiting targets, he wasn’t so spiffy in Hawaii the last two years.
which is why I’m thinking that, at the end of the day, the lure is the age old calling:
“go [west] young man, go [west]”
😆
until you miss da rice.
Tombo Ahi is all jacked this morning. good threads to UH for us outer space peeps.
Here are the late roster add-ons.

Hey ST what happened to Josh Andrews and Joey Cadiz from Mililani? I don’t see them on the roster anymore.
What happened to Jon Santos, wr out of Mililani.
josh andrews and marc moody are at saddleback college.

good luck warriors, the clock is ticking…..

This may seem strange but I couldn’t see the image above, I am using FireFox 2. anyways, what I read was very good and I enjoyed it. I was thinking about print it out, do I have permission to do that?
letsgowarriors,
I’m not sure who that coach was and I’m sure that a local coach doesn’t necessarily want it known that he helped Oregon State get a player that was set to go to UH. The real point of that article to me is that UH fans always complain that schools like Oregon State seem to just look at what players UH gave offers to and then they try to go after the same players, kind of saying that UH serves as a scouting service for mainland schools. I’ve seen this given as an argument against UH making early offers to local recruits, but I am *definitely* in favor of UH offering early to recruits it really wants.
However, the facts are that the mainland schools only seem to go after certain players and not others, so they aren’t just blindly offering who UH offers. It seems that Hawaii high school coaches might be providing scouting tips for some mainland schools and the offers may be due to that and not because UH made an offer.
This article shows an example of how Big East coaches are biased with their votes in the Coaches Poll. Their East-Coast bias is specifically for their conference. I wonder if WAC coaches vote for WAC teams like Big East Coaches vote for Big East teams…if not, the system is against WAC schools getting ranked.
morning all have a good day
kope brewing, sun out, mild trades only one place babe 808
Warrior ball in less than 10 days whoootaaahhhhhh
Saddleback College get a few local boys on their roster. Brandon Delacruz from Mililani and Levi Goeas from Kamehameha are notable besides Andrews and Moody. Maybe a pipeline has been built with Aaron Brown and Brett Leonard coming to UH from Saddleback. I remember when the Rainbow Mens Basketball used to get some players from Saddleback College.
Good morning everyone!
Best wishes for Brashton Satele!
Didn’t Colt come from Saddleback?
Good Hump Day morning to everyone!
Great stuff for newbees by steve tsai on the field differences and how it affects speed.
It does make a difference in mentality for a player to “feel” faster on game day and it’s always better to practice with “weights” for football, although other sports may differ. Especially Track and in particular for sprinters where it is important to always sprint on the best track to develope the best form at top speed.
Good morning,
Just want to thank everyone who sent their well wishes and prayers for Brashton. According to Alvis, the surgery went really well this morning; Brashton is in very good spirits and made new friends at the ortho clinic. He will rest up today and return home tomorrow. God has his hand upon Brashton!
Thanks again, Lee Ann Satele
Yay for Brashton!
Thanks, Mom, for the great news!!!
wf2, check your mail.
Happy to hear Brashton is doing well.
good to hear his surgery went well. thanks for the news now grandma along with the family can breath a sigh of relief.
Good Morning Tsaikos!!
Thanks Mom for the update. Great news!!
The looooong K5 production truck has arrived…….That’s what she said
Mrs. Satele, thank you for the great news on Brashton’s successful surgery and many wishes for a speedy and full recovery!!!
Happy 3rd birthday to Zaiah Lolotai!!!
Re-Central Arkansas’ best player?
Hart is the reigning Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year,
Senior defensive end Larry Hart was named to the first-team defense– College Sporting News preseason FCS All-America football teams this week.
9 Larry Hart DE 6-1 248 Sr.
2008- … Had 43 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and 12 sacks
Looking at NFL Draft Scout
He runs a 4.58, and has a rating number of 20/251 OLB
Hopefully, UH offensive linemen can contain/stop LH pass rush in giving Alexander time to pass.
On another note looking at how CA fared against D-1 competition last year in a game at Tulsa
Sep 27, 2008
Central Arkansas…. 10 10 6 8 – 34
Tulsa…………… 14 14 17 17 – 62
CA Tulsa
NET YARDS RUSHING…………. 93 329
NET YARDS PASSING…………. 342 312
TOTAL OFFENSE YARDS……….. 435 641
Looking at the stats the CA team looks capable of moving the ball thru the air. It also looks like they were in the game at the half, only trailing 28-20 before Tulsa pulled away.
Lee Ann Satele ~ It is news that is well-received here on the Warrior Beat. We were all pulling for Brashton’s return to good health. He is the leader of this team in so many ways. The guys will be very excited to open the season knowing their leader is on the mend after a successful surgery.
Blessings to all of your ohana.
Wouldn’t Andrews have been a junior this season? As for Santos I don’t think he’ll be playing college ball anytime soon.
the loooooooooong K5 truck doesn’t exist until i see pics. 🙂
PPV is going to be sick this year….
bb #62 ~ The double-entendre is glaringly obvious! 👿

Great news! I hope Brashton keeps his spirits up, as well as his outstanding work ethic. We’ll need him against USC next year!

Good morning Tsai-kos!
Howzit Kekoa! How you?
Great news about Brashton! Get well soon.
To the Tsai-kettes – have fun tonight at the Clinic. I will be out celebrating my anniversary.
dpc,
Interesting question.
Like so many other things in our nation today, some would say it’s on the left while others claim it’s on the right! Still others claim it’s right down the middle. I often join those who just think it’s over my head!
jm2375 ~ Hey girl!…are you working from home still?
Will you be gracing our presence at the t-gate next week?
How’s the big pup doing?
Oh yeah!…is *keed* back in school?
So many questions, I know! Most important one is are you going to Coach Heather’s Clinic tonite?
jm2375 ~ E kala mai!…selected visual. Nevah registah da last line of your post about your Anniversary dinner!
Hope you and hubby have a happy! We all sing Happy Anniversary to you da next time we see you.
Kekoa #74 – t-gate is still up in da air. Puppy is now 4.5 months old and 40 lbs and naughty (equivalent to a 3 yr old child). Keed is back in school, but not 100% yet. She missed her entire 2nd week of school.
I’m at work, unfortunately, but looking forward to lunch hour – mebbe Indian fuud today.
Re #61, “[a]s for Santos I don’t think he’ll be playing college ball anytime soon,” that sounds ominous, like a dark cloud is out there. I hope all is well with him. He was a stud in high school, and last I heard he had enrolled at UH and was impressive at the Spring tryout for walk-ons. Does anyone know more?
D-1 ~ You are in rare form today my friend. Hehehehe!
sry meant which end zone, TIA
jm2375 ~ Indian…as in circle the wagons and eat off the chuck wagon? Or Indian…as in burn da tongue of wagon train members?
I wonder if they have a choice like that at the UH fb training table…

Mahalo to bhf2 for organizing all of this to get the bike where it is needed most.
From Na Koa to all of the Tsaiko’s that came through big time; MAHALO!
If this office may ever provide you with information or kokua you have the number or the e-mail.
To show you that the bike is in good working order bhf2 has agreed to have his picture taken on the bike while in LV. I hope to post it on the upgraded Na Koa website.
Look for information soon to be released on the big 100th UH Football celebration fundraiser dinner to be held on December 2, 2009 at the Sheraton. Featured Speaker; Dick Vermeil
Featured presentation: Robert Kekaula with 100 years of UH Football
I am picking up some 8mm movie film of UH games in the 50’s and 60’s tomorrow. Could be some classic clips in Robert’s a/v presentation.
More information on this as it becomes avaialable
Great to hear the good news regarding the bike and Brashton’s surgery! 🙂
OTOH, not so good when your golf score was equal to the outdoor temperature (I’m still out west, hint hint). I’d probably get slaughtered if I played a round with some other notable Tsaikos.
Curt:
Rausch had a really good practice today.
So, did, Moniz.
Re: the Bike
Can we put a “Bonafide Tsaikos” sticker on it??
Don Weir,
Thanks for the bike update.
Any word on the parking passes?
Mahalo for the update Don.
Big Hilo Fan will prolly pose riding side saddle and doing his Waimea Cowboy wave. Hehehehe! What a guy!
Sunday practice?
Don what is the ballpark price for the Dec 2 fundraiser dinner?
…game week, baby! Yessss!
Howzit Everybody,
ST, I know we been asking about this for the past couple of days, but is there any update on the status of David Hafoka. I know he got injured during Spring ball but did not here anything about him after that and I thought I had seen his name on the roster that you had posted on one of your newspaper articles which was written just before Fall Camp. Just wondering.
dpc . . .
Depending on which side you are sitting the scoreboard at Qwest Field will be either on your right or on your left.
bighilofan2:
since you collected so much extra $$$, is there a need for a 2nd bike which can be mailed to Honolulu and used once the team returns from their 2-week road trip?
jus askin as donors sent in $$$ for the bike.
Mahalo Stephen.
ST:
about that loooooooong trailer, what happens/where does it go when not in use for UH sports?
oooh i give up 🙂
The main scoreboard at Qwest Field is, I think, in the North Endzone. That would make it to the right of the Warrior’s bench (if the Warrior’s are still on the East side of the stadium.
HD is fine and dandy…
BUT…
NOTHING BEATS DA LIVE EXPERIENCE!!!! 😎
For those going to the WSU game here is a link to what Qwest Field will look like from your seat. Just plug in your section and seat information and it will provide you with a view.
Section 309, rows v and w look good! The routes and coverages will be easy to see. You might want to consider bringing your binoculars!!!
http://www.seats3d.com/nfl/seattle_seahawks/
The main score board will be to our right.
Oops. I guess to some the only vertical score board in the NFL is not the main score board. The traditional horizontal board will be to the left of the Warrior’s bench (the South end).
Mom,
Great to hear about Brashton’s surgery going well!
Great job bighilofan2 and everyone else for raising the money for the bike!
A-House,
I think that Don Weir reported that the Athletic Department only wanted one bike. Given the current budgetary situation at UH, I’m sure that there will be a need for other important things soon.
The game tomorrow will probably determine which of 3 WRs will be a starter…the player that comes in second will be the starting slot receiver…and the person who comes in third will be on the bench. Right now indications are that Bess is #3 out of the 3, but tomorrow’s game could help him get his starting spot back. One dropped pass tomorrow could result in Bess not seeing the field this year, so the stakes are high!
1. PomaiPrice for a table of 10 at the dinner will be $2000. Put togther a group of 10 and I will put in a reservation for you. I might add that proceeds will go to Na Koa.
2. Parking Passes Passes were picked up in two lots, one on Monday and one on Tuesday. These came from the stadium manager’s office and UH went down to pick them up, then had to sort and mail them out.
You should be receiving your passes in the mail this week. It depends on the postal process now.

It is deja vu all over again!!
There is no #3 in my post.
Since there won’t be many UH games on national tv this season, I figured I’d go with that WAC hook-up. Anyone from the mainland locals who’ve had any success with that medium????
the looooooong truck really does exsist….
but then again…OC16 does HD for football and other high school sports. I never seen a looooooong truck at Mililani HS or McKinley??? This looooooong truck im thinking should have all sorts of crazy ish in it.
oh man..HD is going to look sweet this year.
In the Dallas Morning News paper sports column, there’s a sports writer from Big12 country who’s of the opinion that the MWC should replace the BigEast as a BCS conference qualifier…noting how the MWC has three(3) schools ranked in the AP top 25 as opposed to none from the BigEast.
Don Weir – do you think the team will allow us to place a “Bonafide Tsaiko” sticker on the bike??
mctruck
I’ve been thinking on watching via Oceanic streaming for $12.56 per game unless you get the package.
Let me know if you find another means for viewing.

JM2375.. Happy Anniversary!!
See you next week at the tailgate!
That looooooong TV truck looks impressive.
Now, has anyone actually surveyed the route to get that truck to the UH campus? To the stadium? Hate to see it stuck under a bridge – let alone damage it or unable to make the curves or between the parking lot attendants’ huts!
Just curious
what a pleasant surprise, while eating lunch at Kiawe Grill on King Street, in walks 2 strapping polynesian men….none other than Captain Rocky from the D line and Laupepa Letuli from the O line. they said practice went good, had to get back for meetings, but they wuz hungry…..knowing what it’s like for struggling college kidz, somehow they were blessed for their meals…..that’s what playing at home is like……auryte.
if you’ve never been to Kiawe Grill, onolicious, broke da mout, broke da jaw, and qualifies for a serious kanak attack! GO WARRIORS
I am WORRIED about the UH-UCA game if Pride picked UCA.
I know Pride is a true UH fan and his word has been my Bible. But he is also a realist. So Pride, say it isn’t so!
Ryan Mouton update.
just check out the panoramic automated view and looking good. thanks for getting the tics and I’m sure we will enjoy the game from these seats.
Stretch,
We need to get the sticker on in a good location for the bhf2 picture.
Can you get the sticker to me??
former UH recruits who picked Miami over us are long gone-transferred out. Marve and this season, Cannon Smith asked for their release.
Colt was a Saddleback transfer, but after stops at a prep school in the east and dubious time at Colorado.
Pomai, how do I get in the poll. I’ve been out of touch fishing in the Eastern Sierras

What’s hot (and not) for 2009
Rough waters: It wasn’t too long ago that June Jones and Colt Brennan were leading Hawaii to a BCS bowl game. That now seems like decades ago. The Rainbow Warriors went 7-7 in 2008, losing to Notre Dame 49-21 in the Hawaii Bowl.
Maynard G. Krebs,
The only way the Warriors will lose to UCA is by not respecting them as a good team. I sure hope that our guys are much more mature than that.
NYUH,
Nobody will respect us this year, especially losing to ND like we did, until we start winning consistenly again.
Let’s hope the Warriors will do their talking on the field, starting next Friday night.
Howzit Tsaikos.
AHouse,
We did what we did to make da quota. I ain’t gonna rock no boat cuz Na Koa is there for the team. Glad to help make the bike happen, 2 if they needed. obviously they no need a 2d oddawize we’da herd noise.

Warriortranny2,
i asked you before, and i’m not sure you shared, exactly.
what is your analysis of the interaction between Miano and Tormey. I mean, in terms of coaching the DBs as to timing of the closing to the ball at full speed. I think that Miano is supposed to be the DB coach, but I’m guessing that Tormey has the ST play and would naturally be coaching the DBs to close on the carrier/returner, the same way they would be closing on a wideout or slot coming across the middle. Do you see a philosophical difference between the two? Can they handle each other’s differences so that the play dictates who is right, philosophically, in terms of generating the most hammer out of the players, generating most positive enthusiasm in terms of laying the law almighty on da odda peep?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0Hx8AlY_gQ

Good evening sir. How have you been? Looking forward to seeing you this season. Will you be attending any TGate? Las Vegas perhaps?
Bulla,

I’m sure the guys loved you for da sponsorship. 😀
best way to make a friend is to burp em to dett! 😀
bhf2
So glad to have you back and in great form!!!! I tink you just catching up with all the stuff you’ve been wanting to post!
Reasons I want to believe why the Warriors won’t take UCA lightly
1. So many guys fighting for a position that everyone wants to look good and play hard. It’s been a battle everyday between the O and D and that’s made the team better.
2. Coaches on staff who were there when PSU and that school from Fla handed us our butts. Dey no porget.
I am leery that the R&S (under June) consistently got off to slow starts and came on strong over the last 1/3 of the season.
jmXXXX
Very best of wishes for an upbeat and positive anniversay celebration!

Researchers found that when high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS, commonly used in soft drinks and dozens of human foods) is exposed to warm temperatures it can form a deadly toxic substance. HFCS is also fed to honey bees to increase reproduction and honey production, but the study found that in warm temperatures the HFCS could kill honeybees…this might be a factor in the mysterious disease that has killed at least 1/3 of the honeybee population in the US.
A federal investigation found that the flood-control pumps installed in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina don’t protect the city adequately and the Army Corps of Engineers could have saved $430 million if they had bought proven equipment.
New technology could eliminate odors and air pollutants emitted by industrial chicken rendering facilities and large-scale pig farms. This would be great for people living in the area, especially since the emissions can trigger asthma attacks and cause other adverse respiratory health effects.

Re: Saddleback College…maybe Trap could get something going w/ them, too. The head baseball coach, going on about 20 years now, is Jack Hodges, my classmate from KS ’65. They routinely send guys to USC, Stanford, etc. & have a great tradition & team.
Does anyone remember Bobby Ahu’s 3 punt runbacks for TDs in a game as a soph in 1969 (forget who they played, but it was in HNL Stadium)? Would be nice for RK to consider it in his presentation…a real exciting player from Hilo HS.
I always enjoy the blog banter…bhf2, you too much!!!

When are nfl roster cuts in 2009?
The official roster cutdown dates for the 2009-2010 season are:
Sept. 1 — Roster cutdown to maximum of 75 players.

So come Saturday Sept. 5 the day after UH romps CA (prob. by a score of 67-13) we’ll hear the fates of which former Warriors secured roster spots, and which ones didn’t. For the ones not making the roster there’s always hope that they’ll be one of the eight retained on the practice squad.
Salary minimums
$310,000-rookie
$385,000-1 yr. experience

bulla, had lunch with my friends from Castro Valley CA. Their son, Kent, played bb for Weber a few yrs back. He is now a licensed chiropractor in the bay area.
duffer, not bad. had pot luck for my alaska grp, sauteed clams, opihi, shrimp, teriyaki, ribs, somen, veg salad, tako poke, some kind of blueberries dessert.
Evening Tsai-kos!
No report on the clinic yet?
Decided to stay in tonight. Will go out some other night. Had a couple pieces of ribeye that needed to be consumed. Simple but tasty meal – ribeye, baked potato, sauteed mushrooms, some Spanish red wine and Cold Stone pie.
ST – funny story. Did Ferd find his way back into the building?

Thanks for gathering and posting all that info!
Gotta hit the sack early tonite….see everyone in the morning
bhf2…no confusion, you bring a lot energy here, always enjoyable! Your poor high school teachers, you must have been real kolohe then, too!
Congrats on a nice paddling season.
How’s Nako’o folks doing? We never get to see them anymore. Hope brudda is doing better.
Take care, & maybe I’ll see you all at one of the t-gates. I’m planning to catch at least 1 UH game this season.
Hilo Tsaiko’s and Warrrior fans coming in to t-gate with da Tsaiko ohana!…Priceless.

Can’t wait to meet the rest of you. Kekoa, do you remember Jack Hodges? You’re KS ’64, right? I remember you talking about UH baseball games w/ your dad…always nice to get as many local kids to stay if can, but maybe we can encourage the Saddleback coaches to steer some of their prospects this way, too.
Take care, gotta get some rest for early start tomorrow.
You think bhf2 kind of looks like Charlie Rich? Hmmmmmmm…
but not befo i ansa back Ralph’s challenge.
bulla…if you are out there, i justed wanted to tell you that i just got back from “meeting” duffer and the kid at (urp) tiffany’s.
I like the Cincy coaches. they talk like me.
use all da king’s english. 😀
i saw wwdoc on channel 9, wahine football clinic..
duffer, we should have crashed whitey’s town meeting.
Jack, Sam Kapu and Roy Koenig were all members of the class of ’63. So, I was a year behind them.
Sam is a distant relative, I just saw him at a funeral at KS last weekend. Later we were gathered at President Mike Chun’s (’61) house for the reception.
Roy is my bussiness partner and the former President of the Pearl City Umpire’s Association. We played LL and American Legion ball before going to KS. He also played JV/Vars with Souza and Lenny Vaspra.
Didn’t know Jack Hodges as well. I do know he was a great competitor in all sports, but that was true of many of the guys of that era. Rocky Freitas, Sam Harris, Vince Rosa, Sgt. Napu’unoa, Earl Dye, Charlie Arnold, Wayne Foster, Rob Roy and many others.
whitey
what time is your game tomw?
kekoa,
son of sam (kapu, jr) is now the pastor at new hope manoa.
and, er, i thought rob roy was a cocktail.
i remember watching those guys play when i was a little kid.
ralph,
you were calling bg and bighilo senior citizens when you …………………………….hmmm
WDoc looked like she was the head of the class tonite. They interviewed a few women who looked like they would have made the Rainbow Dancers team!
Where were the rest of our Tsaikettes?! Hmmm…there were no pics of the fuud table.
Al ~ I was in total awe of the athletes at KS. They all struck me as being old and mature beyond their years. The discipline of full time ROTC forged you into being responsible for your everyday activities. Hard to be ‘slick’ when you were always on the run.
Ran around Ching Field with the guys throwing footballs around….
MsLiz has pics….
It was fun!!! JaM & Brie, CindyCenn, Lil Mermaid, GMAHoney & friends & W-Doc were there.
Talked to coaches & players.
Go on FB to see Liz’ pics of the Wahine clinic tonight. She’s zzzzzzz’ing out. Early flight out tomorrow….
We had to get some Bubbies mochi ice cream while we were near University….
‘Night all!
HILOBILLY: I thought Ahu had four TDs but my glasses was probably fogged up. It was pouring, humid and the field was just the pits. No grass, only mud! I think that was also the game that Jimmy Asato was tackled on the 15 yard line but didn’t hit the ground until the 40-45 yard line as he skidded on the mud
But we figured that Bobby would do well – he was from Hilo and used to the rain and mud!
143-#alex dunnachie
I watched the film footage of UH freshmen punter alex dunnachie and it will be interesting to see his development during his four years at UH.
It will be interesting to compare the film footage of his punting style today with future film footage to see if he changes his style in the future.
It would also be interesting to follow along and watch his progress as he learns and picks up pointers on how to improve his punting.
And to observe how if he hits the weight room in building his leg strengths if this helps him in his punting..
What I saw on the film was a short compact type of punting style, with surprisingly little leg extension and follow through.
On film this style looks to work for him as his punts seem to have 5 second hang times and over 45 yrd. avgs.
The impressions you gather from listening to him is that he seems to be a student of the game and is eager to learn.
He doesn’t follow the conventional type of punting style, where you see the better punter’s foot extending past the height of their chins. For his punting style seems to be different than any one elses, where he seems to drop the ball lower to the ground and follow through reaches not higher than his chest. But as I said earlier this seems to work for him, but you have to wonder how much of a improvement he’ll make when learns the finer points of punting so that he’d be reaching his maximum potential.
watching the file footage….
i thought that this was an exercise in creating a duress situation where potential punt blockers were allowed to rush the punter, thereby, allowing the punter to practice a short quick kick since it will happen on occasion during a game.
i suspect that they also practice situational punting. i am sure that alex also practices that rugby style of running punt that seems to have grown in popularity by some teams which allows the downfield coverage an extra one to two seconds.
i have seen older footage of dunnachie and his form was pretty good with that high leg kick that all the great punters have.
kekoa #199 when my dad went to ks, they had to wear uniforms to school. i always thought that was cool. when i went, still had full time rotc. i thought it made us more disciplined. i liked it.
Good morning Tsaikos!
al, just saw on another site that one of the new rule changes this year is rugby style punters are fair game outside the tackle box.
Fted, wow, 8 days. CFB = God’s compensation for the end of summer.
99
i think that is a fair rule. since, the defense won’t know if they are running for a first down, trying to punt, or just running for their life.
I’m with Lou Holtz in thinking Notre Dame is going to have a good year.

Pomai,
My only interest in ND is to see it validate its Hawaii Bowl win.
Nice mention and pic of Devone Bess in the AM New York paper this morning given out to about every subway rider in NYC. Good luck winning over Jets/Giants fans but it included a mention of Hawaii.
Nevada trying to improve pass defense
http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/5464/pass-defense-not-going-to-hold-nevada-back-in-2009
“What we did this year, instead of putting the players to the scheme, we put the scheme to the players, Ault said. “And [we] have had a nice fall camp. I believe our defense is improved. I asked the coaches& I didn’t say make [the defense] more simple, I said be more specific, and it’s been a pretty good offseason in terms of what’s expected and what we should be doing.

JASON TAYLOR: Michelle, thanks for coming to the media center here at the Safeway Classic Presented by Coca-Cola. You’re having a great rookie season on the LPGA Tour, and had a great Solheim Cup outing last week. Can you talk about your year and how it feels to be in Portland?
MICHELLE WIE: I’m really excited to be here. I love coming back to Portland. I think it’s a great city to come back to. And just being in the Pumpkin Ridge area just brings me back to the U.S. Open and I just had a great time. So I’m pretty excited to play this week. I think it’s a great golf course. I got to see all 18 holes so it’s pretty exciting. It’s a really great golf course, really good condition. And it seems like it will be a challenging course.
Q. After last week, can you talk about the emotions of last week? You definitely seemed like you were having a good time.
MICHELLE WIE: Yeah. It was a lot of fun. I think all of our team members just wanted to knock it off the cloud and just remember last week. And it was kind of — It was a lot of fun for me. It was just a lot of excitement and just a lot of emotions running through.
Q. Do you think last week will benefit you in individual tournaments?
MICHELLE WIE: Well, you know, I think I gained a lot of confidence from last week so I think that will help me. But I’ve been feeling like I played well all year, I just, you know, want to do better. So I’m working really hard at my game and I think it showed last week a little bit, and hopefully it will carry on.
Q. There was a lot of talk about you working with Dave Stockton. Can you talk about what he’s working with you on?
MCHELLE WIE: Well, you know, I was in Palm Springs and I didn’t feel like I putted very well at the Evian British Open and I just went and saw him. And he just gave me a couple of really good feedbacks and stuff.
Q. Do you think it helped you at the Solheim Cup?
MICHELLE WIE: Yeah. For sure. I think he’s a really talented putting coach and he has a great feel for things. So, you know, it was definitely the good tips.
Q. Do you think that the length of the course, the way it’s playing now, does that suit your game pretty well?
MICHELLE WIE: Well, it played a lot longer at six in the morning, but, you know, I think it’s a great golf course. It’s a really good mix of holes. There’s a lot of Par 3s and a lot of Par 5s. So I think it’s a really good mix. You have a couple of longer holes, you have a couple of really short holes, so I think it just really tests all around your game.
Q. The three par-5s in a row, 8, 9, and 10, are they all reachable for you?
MICHELLE WIE: I believe so, yeah.
Q. What do you think of having like three par-5s in a row? It’s kind of unusual?
MICHELLE WIE: It’s good. I think a lot of things can happen on those three holes. I think Par 5s are holes where things can happen and there’s a lot of Par 5s so there could be a lot of birdies and a lot of changing momentum and everything.
Q. And 17, the really short par that they can play really short, how do you decide if you’re kind of driving the green on that?
MICHELLE WIE: Well, you know, I think I’d have to have some sort of like a shorter wood or an iron, or maybe, I don’t know. It all depends on the risk and reward, where the pin is and whether it’s worth it to go for it or not. But I think it’s a great hole. It makes you really think about it.
Q. Do you go in with a game plan on how you play it or is it more like where you stand in the tournament?
MICHELLE WIE: Well, I go in knowing that I can, that it’s possible. But I think I have to figure out each day if it’s worth it or not.
Q. As the number of tournaments shrink because of sponsors, does that make each tournament that’s left all that more important to you?
MICHELLE WIE: Well, I think no matter how many tournaments there, no matter if there’s a hundred tournaments or just two tournaments, the importance of each tournament to me is just the same. When I go out on a tournament, I give it my hardest and I give it my best. And, you know, I think there’s a lot more players playing every week because, you know, the numbers, but that could be a good thing. Every week it’s just becoming a stronger feel.
Q. You’ve been around this game for a while obviously, but being here week after week, how different is that or what’s your overall feeling about being on the tour this year?
MICHELLE WIE: It’s a lot of fun. You know, because I only got to play, you know, like six or seven every year. But actually playing every single week, it’s different. It’s nice. It’s nice to go to different places, it’s nice to spend a lot more time with these girls and get to know them a lot better. But it’s definitely a lot more tiring than, you know, playing a month and having a month off or something like that, but I just have to learn how to manage my energy well and it’s been a lot of fun.
Q. Are you planning on going back to Stanford?
MICHELLE WIE: Yeah.
Q. Do you start in September?
MICHELLE WIE: Yeah.
Q. And do you just play the rest of the fall as you can?
MICHELLE WIE: Yeah, I just take it as I go. I’m still going to play a lot.
Q. And there’s talk again about the Tour and looking for marquis players to help promote it. Obviously you figure into that equation. Pressure at all?
MICHELLE WIE: Well, you know, I think the LPGA has a really product. I say that often and I mean it. You know, if you look at our tour, I think we have a lot of marketable players. We just have a lot of backgrounds and a lot of different nationalities. We can market that to different places. It’s becoming a really global tour. But, you know, I don’t — I mean, I think — I don’t really see myself as, oh my God, I’m going to lead this tour or anything, I just want to be out there and show everyone what I have and try to win and stuff.
have a safe trip back to kauai Liz,
looks like you guys had a blast……
My gang and I had a great time last night.
The Clinic was different from last year, which was a seminar type set-up. This year, we broke out into groups and threw passes to the wide receivers, learned how to secure the ball, learned the footwork and handwork of the defensive line and tried to kick a field goal. Then we got to talk story with Aaron Kia, John Estes, Rocky S and a shy freshman. All those seniors set to grad this fall.
The players were polite and patient with us ladies, high-fiving and saying “good try” and “good job” and seemed genuinely glad to be there. What a great group of guys!
The best was talking story with LizK, Slugger, Lil Mermaid and CindyCenn. Liz was hard to miss with her Tsaikos-LizKauai t-shirt. Nice to finally meet the people behind the blog handles. We plan to attend at least one of the tailgates, probably the Fresno game in October.
Hi ho, off to work I go.
gmaHoney, it was great to see you and your friends last night at the Wahine Clinic!
The UH Women’s Football clinic was awesome and informative/entertaining.
It was nice to talk with the coaches and players; need to do this more often! Mahalo to Coach Mack and Heather!

ok- back at work- just a fast shout out to all the people who made last night so special. The players said it best when asked why they were playing for Hawaii (and many came from the mainland) … HAWAII IS OUR FAMILY!
It was really cool to see the diversity represented by OUR WARRIORS. From the hobbits (you know who you are) to the thin air breathers, the mighty mini speedsters to the immovable objects, ALL are WARRIORS. ALL are our OHANA. Gentlemen, your AUNTIES and the other fans SALUTE YOU!
