Warriors add JC kicker
Placekicker Rigoberto “Rigo” Sanchez of Butte College (Oroville, Calif.) is joining the Warriors this summer. Here’s the skinny:
> The numbers: Sanchez is 6-1 and 190 pounds. He said his comfort range is up to 55 yards, although he has successfully launched 60-plus kicks during warmups. Three years ago at Hamilton (Calif.) High, he converted a 57-yarder. He was named to MaxPrep’s California Division IV All-State first team as a Hamilton senior.
> War-room thinking: Announcers used to talk about how it would take three players to replace Scott Harding. But the other special-teamer, Tyler Hadden, also multi-tasked on field goals, PATs and kickoffs. Sanchez, a former soccer player, gives the Warriors a deep threat. He placed 42 kickoffs into the end zone last year. He converted a 54-yard field goal last year. Aaron Novoa, who rejoined the Warriors in January, and Kainoa McDonald, a 2014 Punahou graduate who redshirted last year, were the kickers on the spring-training roster. Novoa emerged as the No. 1 kicker in the third week of spring training.
> ETA: Sanchez said he will arrive at least a week ahead of the Aug. 4 opening of training camp. He will have two years to play two UH seasons.
> Ties: On a lark, Sanchez attended last year’s Fresno State-Hawaii game at Bulldog Stadium. He sat in the section behind the Warriors’ sideline. Butte’s quarterbacks coach, Jon Hays, played at Utah when Norm Chow was the Utes’ offensive coordinator in 2011. Hays threw three scoring passes in the 2011 Sun Bowl.

Good morning Hawaii.
Good morning Tsaikos!
Welcome to the Warror ohana, Mr. Sanchez.
Have a great vacation, ST!
The next time people read/hear about a “gasser,” this is what it entails.
The distance is 110 yards — from one sideline to the other and back.
The players are divided into Big (linemen), Big Skill (linebackers, tight ends, fullbacks, quarterbacks), and Skill (receivers, running backs, defensive backs).
The Bigs go first, and after the last one finishes, the Big Skills go, and then the Skills, and repeat.
There are about eight to 10 gassers.
The Bigs have to complete the distance in 19 seconds or less. There are quicker limits for the Big Skills and the Skills.
In conclusion, you run 110 yards and then, about 40 seconds later, you run another 110 yards, and you do that 10 times.
Looks like Sanchez has a booming leg. He seems to have no problem kicking it in or through the endzone. I like the immediate height on his field goals. Unless there is a breakdown on blocking or he takes too long to kick it (doesn’t seem like it though) it would be hard to block his field goal attempts. He also punts but not as impressive as his kickoffs or field goals. Maybe used as an emergency punter.
On paper, UH is beginning to look unbeatable 🙂
Thanks, JM.
Nearly 55 years on this planet, and I still need help fixing a tie.
Gassers. I always told the kids if you get tired then rest 1 leg. They would usually give a little chuckle, suck it up, and go on to the next one.
Ipu Man:
One day, the young’uns are going to have a puzzled look about “on paper” as they do now when I say, “…sound like a broken record.” Even my 22-year-old son thinks it’s hysterical when I describe records and turntables and that yellow-round piece used to play 45 singles on a record player and … oh, my gosh, I am a dinosaur!
Gassers, also at 40-second intervals, is what I go through after eating beans too late at night.
I get exhausted just reading the description of Gassers. They’re good for you, though.
Stephen: You can also explain 8-tract tapes to your son. Ah, the memories of my 8-track cassette player blasting Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s “Takin Care of Business” in my Dodge Dart.

Old School Dave:
Takin’ Care of Business was a great song.
Thanks for the memory
Eight tracks were fun. You could move from one song to the next, unlike cassettes.
I remember driving my Mazda RX3 station wagon (yes, with the rotary engine) from LA to WY with my 8 track playing George Benson’s “Breezing”. Good times & kept me company on my solo drives…
I feel a little bit better about UH FB’s kicking game with Sanchez joining the team now…Special teams makes a third of the game, so you have to “win” in that area to have a chance for a successful season.
We used to call “gassers”, “beer relays” in my younger days…You chug a beer & tag your partner after your 110 & do another 110 & chug after being tagged again. By the time you’ve done your third relay, you’ve barfed your “cookies” after each gasser…
It will be interesting leading to training camp.
There have been interesting queries. You know how it goes. The season is approaching, and there are a lot of people who want seats. (OK, that was a horrible mixed metaphor, but you get the picture.)
Things could be tougher, I suppose.
In Canada, the fields are wider.
Well perhaps one advantage of not filled our recruiting class is the chance to pick up a few choice players whose circumstances have them looking for a spot late in the game.
We really need a winning season.
Coach chow: Listen up, lighten up, get creative and interesting. If you can’t, step back and let others on your staff do it. If they can’t either then the time is well past the need for a major reboot.
We’d go cruising with quart beers and some herbs in a frend’s GTO with the White Album in the 8-track. By the time we hit “Why Don’t We Do It In the Road” everyone would sing along.
Rigo’s ’13-’14 stats.

Speaking of stats, I think I have a record for visiting the most TJ Max stores in a 2 day period in the greater Las Vegas area, while carrying packages…….#7!!!! top That! hehe
….Ohhhh, and ate at Gordon Ramsay’s Steakhouse in the Paris hotel last night.
Dat was SUM ONO!
Good morning everyone!
Whew! My closest thing to a 110 yard gasser was in a buffet line in Vegas and on larger cruise ships. Ran it 3-4 times. 🙄
Hopefully more cheers than jeers on offense this year.
Rigoberto Sanchez……just so happens to be the same name as the “Peanut Boy” character…….from “Trouble With The Curve”…….

Welcome to the Warriors, Rigo!
I bought a collectable 45 online a couple years ago, ST. I was looking at it in our living room after it arrived when my son walked in. “What’s that?”
99’s food review: Portuguese Sausage flavored Spam. It’s neither Portuguese Sausage nor Spam. What was I thinking? Never again.
No seriously,…. is there anything better than after a night of gambling and drinking free green bottles, taking down a hot bowl of oxtail soup at the Cal?
…and as always, GO BOWS!
Back in the day, during the Tomey era– Mondays were cardio day. So, just as ST described, but we would do 24 of those bad boys. 3 sets of eight.
Niko use to sometimes run w the skill boys for fun. Plenty sweat from the Red Lion and Scruples use to come out during those forays……
