Koelsch out for tour, team now in Maribor, Slovenia
Tweeted around 930 p.m. HST last night that Koelsch was out for the tour. that was 930 a.m. in Venice. Didn’t have access to update this. on a bus to Venice proper
Spent the day in Venice from about 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Rode water taxis both ways on the Grand Canal Very cool.
then 3-plus hour ride to Maribor. got in around 8:30 p.m., walked down to the Maribor training center for dinner. It’s almost midnight and finally can right.
Koelsch was taken to the emergency room after UH consulted with a team physician in Hawaii. Precautionary measures taken, including stitches and tetanus shot.
They don’t want her stitches popping so she will not be playing or practicing much the rest of the tour.
Shoji joked that they’d use Ah Mow-Santos as a second setter then said, seriously, that she would be the emergency backup but didn’t anticipate using her.
Team will tour Moribor town in the morning, return to training center for lunch, play against the very good Maribor club team, then have a dinner featuring regional cuisine.
We’re having a lot of rain which may change plans for Saturday, which was to include obstacle course and alpine slide (sort of a combination luge and water park slide).
Nejc Zemljak and Ales Zivanovic scheduled to meet up with the team Friday as well.

Cindy did I read it right that she only went in for that one play in the 4th set? Was he only playing one setter? Just curious
5. That’s what I was thinking too that Kendra got to play only in the 4th set. Same thing with the first match as Cindy mentioned both team brought in their reserves in the 4th set.
Can I be the negative nancy for a bit? Is Higgins really ahead ahead of Koelsch? I know Higgins probably knows the system better and obviously has more experience, but is she really ahead in terms of delivery to the hitters, decision-making, etc.? I ask because I think Hawai’i really needs a great setter to be successful. In the NCAA’s, Higgins could not deliver a single decent set to Magill.
Just sharing, read that Natasha Burns’s club team earned 4th place in their tournament. There are some still photos. Seems she has some serious hops for a player her size. Looks like her head is over the net and she has long arms to close blocks. With training, has a high ceiling and the sky is the limit, no pun intended.
#7 Really? Didn’t Dave say that Higgins set a good match against Duke in the first round of the NCAA tournament. And yes, I would say that it is self-evident who the coaching staff thinks is presently the better setter. Sounds like both are working hard off-season. Wishing both the best when they come back in August -hopefully much improved.
#8 I agree about Burns. She looks athletic and quick for such a tall player. However, it also looks like she is going to have to put in a lot of very hard work to get much much much stronger. Upside potential looks goods. Did she hit any slides?
#10 Only still photos were available. Still waiting for SID to put out info on the other three recruits. Or, when Cindy returns from Europe she’ll be able to track them down and provide us with their latest progress. JMO: believe most fans are optimistic that one or two of the recruits has to step up in order for Wahine to win BW and do well at the NCAA tourney. Returning team has a good core, just not enough consistency to get them over the humps and slumps.
Yes, Koelsch only played in Set 4 vs. Italy and was hurt on the first play of Set 4 vs. Slovenia.
7. Is the that much better? Only thing Shoji has said is that “Higgins is our setter.”
but they do need two to run things. Not sure what will happen when Iosia comes in 2016 and where that puts the Koelsch.

Higgins was the worst setter UH had in recent memory but got favorable treatment from Shoji for (draw your own conclusions as to why). That’s a fact.
No, that’s called an opinion. Fact? Here’s a fact for you. Some of you arm-chair coaches don’t have a clue what you are talking about! You aren’t there at practice, and don’t see the team team up close and personal on a regular basis. But continue to chime in with your expert opinion, because I am sure Dave is anxiously awaiting your input……………. NOT
#14 Have you read Cindy’s article about the wahine match against Slovenia , the Slovenian National team assistant coach is quoted as saying: “I really like the setter (Higgins)”. Now, that is a fact. It is also an obvious fact that most setters in their first year running the team full time, almost always compare poorly against their immediate predecessors (Mita and Dani). Let’s see what this season brings. I wishing both Higgins and Koelsch the best. Hope you will too.
15. Hi tongo. I guess I’ve just been so used to quality UH setters. I did not see every match last season, but from what I saw, she really is not of the same quality as previous UH setters. All season long she has struggled with her connection to Magill, and against Washington, she did not deliver a single decent set to Magill. Credit Magill for getting at least three kills dumping the ball over. You can’t blame passing either, because there were some good passes from Greeley and Mendoza.
you are being a bit harsh. How quickly people forget how they bashed Mafua and Uiato.
14. not sure of what you are inferring about ‘favorable treatment.’ She had the edge over Koelsch because she had a year in the program and if you came to practice you could compare how the set location is for both.
17. you cannot put it all on the setter. Magill often jumped early.
Think connection will be better from what I’ve been able to see this tour.
Both Higgins and Magill were in the UH offense for the first time as starters.
