A week from today #WahineEuro
Wahine leave next Friday (May 15) for their first European training-playing trip.
Have a story running Sunday that gives more info but the condensed details.
Stops in Italy, Slovenia, Austria Czech Republic
Main cities are Milan, Venice, Maribor, Vienna, Prague
Playing teams from Italian Federation, Slovenia and Tunisia (tentative)
Leave May 15 evening. Arrive in Milan morning May 17, go straight to the Italian National Training Center for practice and lunch, while waiting on hotel rooms
There will be cross-training, including a ropes course and Alpine slide while in Slovenia. Some sightseeing.
Former Wahine Maja Gustin looking forward to seeing the team in her home country. She is originally from Maribor. Has been playing professionally since graduating from UH, think it was 04.
Teee Williams, living in Germany, may be able to come down. And who knows who might show up a long the way.
Very fortunate that the paper is sending me with the team so …
there will be blogging! Photos. Video. Tweets. Print stories.
All hinges on internet availability, which I’ve been told is good by European standards.
Twitter in itself will be interesting for me. When we set up some things yesterday, realized my last tweet was from 2011.
Follow CindyLuis_SA
Twitter hashtag will be #WahineEuro
Ciao for now.
Wow, tough job Cindy, but someone’s got to do it 🙂 Looking forward to your coverage!
Great opportunity !!! Looking forward to the posts and pics. Have fun.
Careful when traveling to Tunisia….Our last trip they wanted to trade 25
camels for one of the young ladies on our tour…LOL !!!!!!
I think the trip will be a life time experience for the girls and I am so glad that the Star-Advertiser saw fit to send you to provide the human interest stories that you are so adept at writing. Fyi- The wine in Italy does not contain sulfides so no hang overs. Have fun!
Bill Ferguson not returning to USC. http://www.usctrojans.com/sports/m-volley/spec-rel/050815aaa.html I guess taking a team to the MPSF semi-finals not good enough for SC.
Maybe Larry T would like to come home.
3. we are not going to Tunisia. they are tentatively scheduled to play a team from Tunisia in Slovenia.
4. not sure how much wine I’ll be able to drink. There’s a lot of work that will be done on this trip. But I was in Italy in 2010 and do know about the fewer headaches.
5. sorry to hear about Bill. Nice guy.
6. Doubt it. Still listed on the spring football roster at QB.
Wow USC has some high expectations. Good luck to Ferguson. Would love him as an assistant at UH if Zarkovic leaves after Siki graduates.
I personally dont think UH needs tuileta. they have Siki and Fey back who are both better, Also Matuatia coming in the next year, who has more potential as well.
I noticed on twitter that UH sand bows, got a commitment from Sarah Garrow to play next year, not sure if true though.
8. double if Fergie would leave the area. His club is way too successful.
9. It is true sort of. Harrow is coming to UH for school. hoping to walk on for sand. Portland. Hawaii connection: sand coaches are Gary and Lisa Van Sickle.Gary played at UH, Lisa at HPU.
Coach Wade mentioned that Big West still thinking about starting Men’s VB. I hope this happens…..MPSF is just too big now.
MPSF is smaller than it’s been. Lost UOP. WCVC/CIVA/WIVA/MPSF also Used to have LMU, SDSU, Cal Poly.
Don’t think enough Big West schools sponsor men’s volleyball to have a league.
You only have UH, Long Beach State, CSUN, UCI, UCSB.
The PacWest also has discussed it. And Wade said, perhaps jokingly, that he’d move over to the PacWest if that happened. Currently NCAA DI and II are combined for men’s volleyball. Lewis is DII.
It would be really nice if the Hawaii DII schools offered it. Believe all but Chaminade has done so in the past. BYUH won national championships as Church College and HPU was coached by the great Pete Velasco in the early 80s. I know Tino Reyes has wanted to do so at UHH. And if UH-WO ever gets its athletic program off the ground, I know that Rockne Freitas is interested in men’s volleyball. Would be great for the local players who can’t afford to go away to school in a sport with 4.5 scholarships.
hey cindy…don’t think that just because this was the 1st time i voiced my opinion on wade that i haven’t always felt this way, win or lose…i’m old school and have always voiced my dislike for wade when actually SPEAKING with people. don’t usually hide behind a blog. i’ll give him the fact that he’s a helluva a recruiter because he possess the “waha” gene…but what he does or doesn’t do after that to develop these players are suspect to me. agree or disagree all you want, but don’t ASSUME that i never complained when he was winning! siki’s dad for coach!!
13. It wasn’t pointed at you specifically. Perhaps I should have written ‘few’ were complaining when they were winning.
Didn’t assume anything. But as you said, it was your first time doing so on the blog so ….
Milan is a great coach with a tremendous track record. Have said that he made a difference this year. However, he lacks the U.S. recruiting connections that are needed at the NCAA level. His son is gone in a year then likely they both return to Europe.
Continuing the thought on a Big West league. The MPSF is run through the Big West, shares offices. Other member conferences that drop some sports into the MPSF are the Pac-!2, Mountain West, WAC and WCC.
While it is convenient for those conferences to put some sports such as men’s volleyball and gymnastics into the MPSF, it also makes it easier for them not to have to sponsor the sport and push for more numbers to do so.
Conference Carolinas has 12 teams, split in 2 divisions.
The MPSF has 12 teams in 1 division. They used to have 2 divisions with each team playing home and home twice within the division and 1 crossover match with teams in the other. 2 divisions existed from 1990-2003.
If I remember correctly, things changed when one of the best teams in one division didn’t get into the playoff tournament because of a tiebreaker. And if I remember correctly, the 1990 UH team was 12-4, tied for 2nd in the Wilson division and lost a playoff berth on a coin flip.
