Play-in Day: Penn State

During this frenetic volleyball season, coach Charlie Wade’s wife asked him to take time to enjoy it.

For Wade, like any coach, there are too many concerns, obligations, meetings and upcoming opponents to pause to smell the proverbial roses. But his wife, like all wives, was correct.

There is the often repeated image of a UH baseball coach, at the dugout’s top step, vowing to return to the College World Series. That team is still waiting.

And after the Warriors won the volleyball title in 2002, there was hope the Stan Sheriff Center eventually would be decorated with many more championship banners. It took 13 years, to this year, for the Warriors to return to the NCAA tournament.

For all the good times at NOLA β€” at least from what we can remember after the Bourbon Street haze β€” few thought that would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

For the UH volleyball program, this week is the one that will be remembered fondly in the later years. Enjoy it now. As the saying goes, the future is not promised.

Stanford’s a nice venue, but I think it over-bid having two national tournaments in the same week. When participating teams can’t stay in hotels in the same city as the tournament, something isn’t right.

    2nd!

Absolutely! Having a competitive program is all you can really ask for. Making it to any national championship scenario takes teamwork, talent and lot’s of luck. For us as fans, we relish the opportunity to be on a national stage and display just how much pride and passion we have for our state. It’s always a feel good time for the community. Let’s cheer the Warriors and Wahine on and give thanks for the good times!

    WHAT???????????????

The Stanford site was selected when? If a year ago, the NCAA failed to reserve hotel rooms for all the teams? How long ago the decision was made to change to format from 4 to 6 teams?

All you need is NUMBERS!!! names can be filled in later.

Did you know that a Nittany Lion is a fabled lion from nearby Mt Nittany? Beat Penn State Gunfunnit! Go Bows!

  10. seewhy May 5, 2015 8:52 am

Da odda tournament is Wahine Water Polo.

Need to find stables for the horses.

  17. jm2375 May 5, 2015 9:51 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

RIP bhf2. You will be missed.
(Is Mamane Namahoe of the MVB team a relative?)

    GO WARRIORS!!! Slay the Lions!
    GO WAHINE!!

A-house – I think NCAA awards the tournament sites 3-4 years out. This is the 2nd year for the 6-team “Final Four”. I believe the decision was made the year prior (I could be wrong) with the addition of the new conference.

  18. jimmy the lock May 5, 2015 10:18 am

In case you want to make accommodations, the following is who will host the next men’s volleyball tournaments:

    2016 – Penn State
    2017 – Ohio State
    2018 – UCLA

  19. A View from Afar May 5, 2015 10:37 am

ST #1. I don’t understand why there would be a problem finding hotel rooms reasonably close to Stanford. Although Palo Alto (where Stanford is) doesn’t have a huge number of hotel rooms, there should be ample rooms in nearby cities (Menlo Park, Mtn. View, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, etc) that are within a short 15-20 minute van/bus ride from Stanford. The two tournaments will still draw far fewer fans (and be spread out over a longer time) than say a Stanford football game. It is likely whoever handled the lodging didn’t get the right help from an agency familiar with the surrounding area.

  20. 808 May 5, 2015 10:41 am

re #1: just wondering — do you know where are the teams staying? There are a lot of low-rise motel-style places around Stanford. Maybe the NCAA has certain standards, but there are at least three Hilton Garden Inns (and other Hilton properties) in the area, a Sheraton, and a Westin. Schools should still be in session so it’s not like families coming in for graduation have taken all the rooms. Does the NCAA MVB tournament or the WPP tournament draw large crowds so that followers of the teams may have taken up all the rooms? I guess with 6 MVB teams and what is it — 8? WWP teams, and their followers, rooms could get scarce if you’re looking for superior rooms.

  21. Tiki808 May 5, 2015 10:56 am

I hope they do get along. It’s a different set in Palo Altos. The team is Hawai’i. I don’t think they’ll accept Imua warriors. Just play and win is the goal. Stick to the original goal, win.

  22. jimmy the lock May 5, 2015 11:00 am

At least staying in a hotel outside the city boundaries is better than sitting in your dorm room hoping to make next season’s NCAA Volleyball Tournament.

  23. jimmy the lock May 5, 2015 11:04 am

Hey Tiki808, what do you think of Senator Kouchi’s move to become the new Senate President? Being a Kauai guy you must be proud.

  24. Tiki808 May 5, 2015 11:13 am

I like Los Angeles also. Imua is for losers. I like winners. Warriors is enough. I speak the truth. Go warriors!

  25. NotNasti May 5, 2015 11:23 am

Kudos to Ron (Sen. Kouchi), an old friend from Waimea.

  26. Inyoface May 5, 2015 11:49 am

It’s weird since Chow has been coach he’s never had a starting qb during spring training.

  27. Tiki808 May 5, 2015 11:57 am

I was from there. Now I choose Big Island. But I’m from here. As for senator Kouchi, for the 70s. Too spiritual, more intellect would go. Kaua’i? Town & country all the way. And still so on the local politics there.

  28. A-House May 5, 2015 12:20 pm

A-House family sends it’s deepest sympathy and condolences to Susan and Family for the loss of BHF2

altho he missed many tailgates the past 2 years he certainly made up for it in the years he dropped by to part of the Tsaikos tailgate at the cabanas.

Good hunting Wade’s Warriors! Let’s go Bows!

  31. SteveM May 5, 2015 1:16 pm

    RE: #28

Bighilofan2 personally went to investigate the problem of a broken football JUGS machine and paid for it’s repairs. He lead the charge for contributions to purchase another sidelines exercise bike for the team. Don Weir brought the bike to a tailgate to show the Tsai-kos the result.

    On his colorful side…
    (1) He first met the Tsai-kos at a cattle call at Makino Chaya in 2008 where he received his Tsai-ko name tag. Wearing it proudly, he said he’s going down to talk with then-A.D. Herman Frazier and give him a piece of his mind. ST was on the Herman’s list of NON-favorite people in those days. We thought he was kidding. The next day ST wrote on the blog and requested no Tsai-kos go and visit Herman Frazier… 😯

    (2) Bighilofan2 and his “Respect” banner were removed from his end zone seats above the team tunnel…

    RIP Bighilofan2.
If Long Time UH Fan can’t keep rasu begasu, FloridaTed and Bighilofan2 out of trouble, at least there’s a good lawyer now.

  32. Da Punchbowl Kid May 5, 2015 1:18 pm

Yes. This truly a moment in time to be savored. Super fan JM2357 turned us on to Men’s VB a few years back, and my wife and I now love watching at the Stanley and on occasion, TV.

Good luck to the team, they have played hard all season – watching them has been a delight. In addition to the win loss stats, its been fun to get to know the players. They have that something special – the “it” factor. To know this team is to love them as individuals and as team. It’s exciting to know that as they go forward, they not only play for UH and the state itself, but they also hold a special place in our hearts, a place of pride and aloha for them.

    Go get ’em Warriors!!!

  33. Da Punchbowl Kid May 5, 2015 1:22 pm

Big Hilo was a great guy. One of a kind – as I said earlier, God made him and broke the mold. Big aloha to a man who personified that term – aloha.

  34. tom May 5, 2015 2:23 pm

BIG HILO was one terrific bug and will be sorely missed.

He was instrumental in getting the JUG machines and the exercise bike for the UH football team.

The football team – through Coaches Choice – needs some equipment that Gerard probably would have spearheaded – so as he did so much in the past, I contributed a couple of dollars in his memory.

  35. kahuna May 5, 2015 2:37 pm

Regarding hotel rooms….there should be plenty available around the area. I don’t think even if you find room up in Burlingame, San Bruno or South San Francisco is all that far. I know when UH plays SJSU, I usually stay in SF and then make that drive down to SJSU on game day. I don’t think it would be such a hassle to drive from South SF to Palo Alto.

If there is little choice in SF, then they can check Santa Clara, San Jose, and Milipitas area.

  36. Don Weir May 5, 2015 2:44 pm

We will meet again Big Hilo Fan2.
The bike was only a small part of the support he gave to Na Koa in his time.

    Vaya con dios compadre!!

  38. RainbowCliff May 5, 2015 5:06 pm

My condolences goes out to a GREAT man in Big Hilo Fan2 !

The man was just awesome supporting the warrior football team as I never forget in Vegas he had this foam Hawaii green helmet walking around the Tsaiko cattle call with his resounding voice leading cheers “let’s go bows” !

While I was stunned just watching this spectacle it even became a colorful event when he was at the game as the helmet never came off and any time Hawaii made a great play all you would see is the BIG large green foam helmet just jumping and cheering with near by fans joining the celebration !

Wonderful guy who truly is a Tasiko Legend among Rasu Begasu and Florida Ted.

May he rest in eternal peace.

  39. jm2375 May 5, 2015 5:20 pm

Watching the live stream. Whoever supplied the announcers with player info got it ALL wrong for Davis Holt. Aiyahyah.

  46. oneseason May 5, 2015 8:53 pm

A great season for the Rainbow Warriors … one ball near the end of the fourth set hung on the tape just a little too long. Otherwise, it might have gone to a fifth set. Really glad the seniors got to enjoy the SSC crowds. Looking forward to next year.

  47. David J. May 6, 2015 12:22 am

Good morning Hawaii!. I would like to change the subject! . People that don’t like or talk bad about University of Hawaii football. Like here in Las Vegas they’re really seriously shouldn’t talk at all!. Because UNLV can’t and will not pay their coaches that they have fired or resignation!. Because the last head coach in taking them to court. Even Mike Stanford and other before them. Like UNLV trying to say is if are a really great coach . We will offer you a great pay contact and if you do go and you resign or get fired

  48. David J. May 6, 2015 12:30 am

I was trying to say that? If you don’t do a great job and if you resign or get fired! You wouldn’t get paid the other years of your contact say!. So will have to take them to court!. It happen to Mike Stanford after he finally got his money from the University. He still really upset with the University and other coaches too. It was in the Sunday’s sports page and a headline news!
