The crew
Taylor Averill might not be the MPSF’s player of the year, but he certainly ranks high for sportsmanship. Averill, who is certain to be named an All-American next week, was genuinely happy that teammates Siki Zarkovic, Brook Sedore, Jennings Franciskovic and Kolby Kanetake received recognition from the MPSF.
In nearly every interview, Averill acknowledges sports-performance trainer Daniel Mar Chong and athletic trainer Bruce Hamelin.
Mar Chong is largely credited with Averill’s makeover. Under Mar Chong’s guidance, Averill lost fat, built strength and muscle, and now is perhaps the sport’s most complete middle. Averill’s ability to crush an imperfect set — with the option of a cutback or spray shot — is possible because of his explosive jump, which is possible because of core and leg training under Mar Chong’s program.
Athletic trainers are comparable to mechanics who repair and maintain players’ health. Hamelin also has the added role of motivator, often imploring the players during timeouts. Last weekend, Hamelin attended a best friend’s wedding in Florida, forcing him to miss the road matches against BYU. UH lost both matches, ending a 16-match winning streak.

With limited floor space at UH, linebacker Julian Gener did core exercises in the Stan Sheriff Center the other day. To his side was athletic trainer Jayson Goo, also doing core exercises. UH has a fit group of trainers. Brian Wong, who is assigned to football, usually wakes up at 4 a.m. to work out.

Speaking of fit, football manager Brandon “Sudsy” Devie ran 2:58 in the Boston Marathon this week. It topped his previous marathon best of 3:05. As for the nickname, well, he was doing laundry for the Warriors on a road trip and had difficulty figuring out the detergent-to-water ratio …

The Warriors’ 11th spring practice will be at Aloha Stadium this evening.

Brother Mike’s PhD defense is today. Wish him well. This is the final step before he can become Dr. Mike.
First!
I second that, leron!
Good morning! 🙂
GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!
Thanks Daniel Mar Chong and Bruce Hamelin!.
Good morning

and a good morning to the “counselor” of this blog!!
Very nice article about the trainers. These guys look like they could play. And Julian has legs like a NT. No wonder he has so much power.
Hi ho, Hi ho, it’s work I am
sitting at my desk with unwelcomed audio ads popping up since yesterday!
Whoa.
I need a warning with these pop-up ads.
I’m a heart patient. I can’t be scared witless with these surprise ads.
It takes a team to make a team great. Mahalo to all of the “team” members who have helped the Volley Ball Warriors to have such a great season. Those behind the scenes create the scene, and the Warriors are sight to see this season!
We’ll be at the Stanley tomorrow night!
Good morning, Colonel, Judge, H-Man and our glorious leader.
Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.
“Sudsy”? me tots it was because he was fond of the “suds” on top of da glass.

Anyhoo, IMUA WARRIORS!
Good morning, Tsaikos!
Always have to give credit to the behind the scenes guys. They sure put in a lot of hard work for the Bows!

Good morning everyone!
KMuch kudos to the Trainers!
I have no doubt that ST will have a Ph.D brother tonight… early congrats to Dr. Mike!
Yes, support staff are very important. Great support can make or break a sports team, an academic unit, a company or organization. Thank you to all the support staff at UH!!! Since the trainers are featured today, thank you for keeping our athletes healthy and help them play better on the court/field or in the pool/ocean…
Good luck to your brother Mike. I wonder if he is going to leave the community college and go teach at the university level full time…
To fight the audio intrusions, I just plug in an ear phone and put it aside.
Ahhh, quiet and peace.
Hmmn, I just read this passage this morning– “With Jameis Winston I see JaMarcus Russell,” a longtime sr. executive in personnel said. “They do dumb things.
What do y’all think?
RE: 3-Prong #15
Getting me all excited for tomorrow! Go Bows!
GO MIKEY!!!
RE: boolakanaka #20
Well, as long as Winston stays out of trouble and keeps his hands off the purple drank…
The practice at the stadium, is it open to the public and if so what time?
Good luck to Mike!
Stadium practice is from 6 to 8 p.m.
Don’t think it’s open to the public, but if you’re a relative of a player, I’m sure you can go.
It’s also the last practice of this week.
No practice tomorrow.
They’ll go four times next week. Remember: No spring game.
Mahalo to the Crew!
Good luck to the Wahine PoloBows!
Attack da Beaches! (Sorry, couldn’t resist)
And the TennisBows!

Let’s Go Bows!
(Echoing through the Stanley!)
Yup, these guys are worth more than their weight in gold. Back in the day Eric Okazaki really helped with my rehab and took good care of us. Plus he is a very nice guy!
Mar Chong and Hamelin are not listed in the Hawaii Athletics staff directory. Too new ?
Dr. Michael Tsai. That has a great ring to it. Good luck, bro.
UH has done a terrible job in trying to get people reinteresred in the Football program…I understand no spring game to prevent injuries but why not have at least an event for the community maybe a meet and greet autograph session or even a clinic like they put on when Mack was headcoach kinda dissapointed
The only way to get the people reinterested is to win, that’s it already.
To get people interested you need to win. Great example is the Volleyball team.
almost pau hana! Let’s see if da bows can hit this hotshot prospect tonite. 95-99mph with a wicked slider they say.

Fresno state commit having personal problems
Let the weekend begin, it’s Tirsty Time! Go Bows!
“HONOLULU – The University of Hawai’i Rainbow Warrior football team held a full-contact, 77-play controlled scrimmage during a two-hour session Friday night, under the lights of Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.” Excerpt from the hawaiiathletics website. It was a closed scrimmage and the public was not invited. I don’t believe it, but then again, why am I surprised?
Why do our receivers keep dropping passes?
#38 – Why do our receivers keep dropping passes?
Could be a bunch of factors such as lousy vision, over-anxiety, butterfingers, inexperience, QB passes too fast/hard.
Because the footballs are not under-inflated
to make them softer and easier to catch.
