Spreading the aloha

Our family friend and excellent chef Dean Mishima started a small diner in Kaneohe several years ago. He had steady — but not overwhelming — business. Then he was featured on the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Dean even sported a bleached haircut to match host Guy Fieri’s. Dean moved to the old Zippy’s location in Kaneohe, and now Dean’s Drive-Inn is booming. Even though the long-time customers wait in line longer, they’re all happy. Dean’s a great guy. People are happy for great guys.

Earlier in the volleyball season, the Stan Sheriff Center crowd was so sparse people wore jackets because there weren’t enough bodies to counter the A/C. The dance-offs during timeouts had few participants, like wedding reception dance floors before the Electric Slide is played.

Times have changed. The Warriors are No. 1, and the arena is packed. There are signs throughout the SSC, including that scary blow-up picture of Charlie Wade. Last night, there were two ADs and two head basketball coaches in attendance. The chancellor hosted a pre-match reception.

The thing is, the volleyball players and the coaches welcome the response. They don’t care when people arrived to the party, but appreciate that they decided to attend.

“The fans are absolutely incredible,” libero Garrett Komisarek said. “They win some games for us. It if weren’t for them, this would be like any other school. They make this place special.”

UH has worked hard to promote volleyball. The band and cheerleaders perform at home matches. Wade will call radio stations to talk volleyball. Wade hosts pre-game chats with boosters, offering strategies and even polling which outside hitter to start. The players call him “Charlie.”

UH doesn’t always have a lot good news. When it does, it’s nice that it can be shared.

    Good morning everyone!

Interesting that the Chancellor hosted the reception…isn’t that usually an A.D. function? Hope the men’s volleyball beat writer found his way into the reception. 🙂

I GUESS YOU DIDN’T NOTICE HOW BLEHH-VERMIN HAS BEEN SUBLIMINALY INFORMING THE PUBLIC THAT HE IS IN FACT THE WHOLE CHEESE, BY TAKING THE SPOTLIGHT IN THE TV PRESENTATIONS AT OPPORTUNE MOMENTS, BEGINNING WITH INTRODUCING DAVID MATLIN AS THE NEW HEAD COACH OF UHMBB, AND THEN LATER, PUSHING HIM ASIDE TO ADD HIS OWN UNNECESSARY COMMENTS.

  6. 3-Prong April 11, 2015 11:01 am

At Dean’s, you just have to try his “Surf and Turf”. I’m not kidding. upscale plate lunch To Da Max!

Teribeef perfection with ono ahi cakes. Dey open today or what?

  8. wakasaki April 11, 2015 11:17 am

Maybe some should read the article by Ferd about Matlin as to what he can “officially” do. It could possibly be a reason for Vroman being like the “AD” so far.

  9. Mad Dog April 11, 2015 11:19 am

Dean’s is closed Fridays and Saturdays. I usually go there at least twice a year. Once in early March when I drop off my tax papers to my accountant upstairs from Dean’s, and the next time when I pick up my completed tax returns. This year, I made the mistake of picking up my tax returns on a Friday. I could not get a plate lunch to take the sting out of the taxes.

wonder how much the tickets were…or was free…now that is a fan base huh…

I guess the old AD never saw that as an important part of building a loyalty following…if possible… should be on Sunday n at late afternoon or early evening…to get more to come n watch…n have a rip snorting tail-gate….then pot luck for players after the game…be a good start for the new AD…

  24. Gsky April 11, 2015 1:52 pm

Apparently Dave Reardon feels if you are upset with Benjy not getting the HC job, you are a “pea brain”, as he states in his latest article. He’s such a classy guy…. Benjy may or may not have been a good choice, but why the need to disrespect all of his supporters. I can’t be the only one that is sick of his disgusting reporting style. Need more classy, intelligent, informative sports journalists like Mr. Tsai.

Congrats to Coach Wade and the MVB team.

I could go for a broiled hamburger and a Green River from Washington Intermediate back store.

  27. cappie the dog April 11, 2015 2:34 pm

Does Dean’s Drive-In offer brown rice?

  28. st. anthony trojan April 11, 2015 2:39 pm

Ha…Green River… now that is one from the past…

  29. ALLAN April 11, 2015 4:33 pm

I THOUGHT THAT GREEN RIVER SODA USED TO BE CARBONATED; THE DRINK AT ST. LOUIS D.I. ISN’T, SO IT’S JUST GREEN RIVER ADE. FANTASTIC FOOD MENU, THOUGH.

  30. MC96816 April 11, 2015 4:38 pm

#23: I used to live in Omaha. In the past the Red-White Nebraska spring game was $10 per person, all proceeds to charity. Many, many, MANY people are on the season ticket wait list. A lot of fans will fly in from out-of-town because this is the only NU game they can get into. Memorial Stadium has had sell-outs since JFK was president. Those people are freaking NUTS for their football team.

  31. Akamai Okole April 11, 2015 4:39 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

    Fuud….

    Tsigh

  32. ALLAN April 11, 2015 4:39 pm

    5. JUST NOTICED IN MY #5BLOG THAT I SAID MATLIN WAS UHBB COACH. STUPID MISTAKE: I MEANT A.D.; ALL THAT OTHER STUFF CAN BE VERIFIED BY REVISITING THE INTRODUCTION OF THE UHAD BY WHAT’S-HIS-NAME.

  33. Akamai Okole April 11, 2015 4:40 pm

    Come on BaseBows!

  34. Akamai Okole April 11, 2015 4:42 pm

  37. st. anthony trojan April 11, 2015 6:36 pm

MC96816…. Yea me believe you….went to Lincoln one year….was first game with UCLA…walked in Sears,,,,n all me saw was a sea of red…red n red all over…think Bob Devaney was coach then…they ate up UCLA…

Had a opportunity to walk around the stadium n on the field…was a good to be there for a ‘game day’ experience…

Was working at the State Fair…(going on the same day) had a booth there selling puka shells…when it was ‘hot’ that period of time…

  38. Kaimuki Kid April 11, 2015 6:38 pm

Allan, yes posting in all caps makes it very difficult to read. Please if you could post in lower case. Mahalo KK

  41. Tiki808 April 11, 2015 9:31 pm

Congratulations UH men’s volleyball. MPSF champs!

  42. tom April 11, 2015 9:42 pm

“HERE’S JOHNNY” the introduction for Johnny Carson show.

“HERE’S DAVY” with drumroll and maybe trumpets.

However, as no one really knows David Marlin (sp?), that might not do.
Besides, this is a UH appointment.

Ben Jay could do it but he is an AD about to depart.
The AD is responsible to the Chancellor of the Manoa campus.]
I think he could not just say “HERE’S DAVY”

When you are introducing someone to a special post, or at a wedding banquet or whatever, you just might have to at least touch on his/her credentials.

  43. st. anthony trojan April 11, 2015 9:51 pm

seems the MVB team was more impressive tonite by the scores..

  44. oneseason April 11, 2015 10:21 pm

A great night for Rainbow Warrior VB. Soundly and classily defeating Sanford in 3 sets. The supa-bazooka was aimed more evenly about the SCC. The fans got a great show. All the seniors got a great sendoff, but the evening was the most engaging for Brooks Sedore. Congratulations!

  45. iwonderwhytheyhateme April 11, 2015 10:25 pm

Dave Marlin?…Guess Google was down =/

  46. Liz Kauai April 12, 2015 3:13 am

#40. I DIDN’T SAY I WAS BLIND. IN FACT, I SAID GREEN RIVER USED TO BE CARBONATED…FROM MY TASTING IT. I NEVA EVEN WEN TAWK ABT COLOR. BTW, I NOT LOOKING OR ASKING FOR SYMPATHY, BUT THIS CONDITION STARTED OCCURRING TWENTY YEARS AGO; I USED TO DRINK FIZZY GREEN RIVER IN THE 7TH TO 12TH GRADE…MO DEN 50YRS AGO.

If the blog letters are too small there are couple of ways to enlarge them for people that have vision problems.

    1. You can hit the “CTRL” button then tap on the “+” sign to enlarge text.
Note: Multiple taps on the “+” will continue to enlarge the text until it maxes out.

    2. You can also use the Magnify display utility by hitting “CTRL” then “ESC” buttons and type “magnify” in the search box. Select the “magnify” program and you should be able to move your mouse around to highlight the text that is too small.
