Stutzmann will join Portland State staff
Craig Stutzmann is joining the Portland State coaching staff.
Stutzmann, who is in charge of UH receivers, told PSU head coach Jerry Glanville he will accept the offer, which must be finalized by the school president.
An announcement is likely to be made tomorrow.
Stutzmann’s younger brother, freshman wideout Billy Ray Stutzmann, will remain with the Warriors.

Very happy birthday wishes to Rob25.

mornin
Craig Stutzman – Good Luck.
This is a great opportunity for Craig –
He gets a coaching job title, with an appropriate salary.
At UH, he will have to wait for a position to open up.
Brought this over – yeah, I’ll do my part.

we’re in back of mack!!!!
email mack some encouraging words, too.

top 5! cheepono.
Hello there.
top ten, can he make a living on $30K in Oregon…no sales tax, better if if was no income tax
Best wishes to Craig Stutzmann. A full-time coaching position is important for his career and Portland State would be lucky to get him. I hope that his loss doesn’t hurt the Warrior program too much in the long run…but he’s got to look out for his career. Maybe someday he can come back to coach at UH.
Regarding #4, I sent an e-mail of support for Mac yesterday afternoon. Hopefully getting support e-mails from Warrior fans will help him realize that we are behind him.
Pisa must have enjoyed his first practice in full pads with the Bears…and he definitely announced his presence.
I just saw the stream and had to turn it off before it ended. I feel sorry for Coach. He was made an example. Unfair and unjust. Disgusting really.
Great Morning All!
Best of luck Stutz! A great opportunity that was a long time in coming.
Good Morning All! Hope everyone has a good day.
Good Luck to Stutz! ST, assuming Stutz goes to PSU, who whould fill his spot?
We are still looking for at least 2 more people to join our Tsaiko fantasy football league. For information or any questions email me. djmitcho at yahoo dot com
Aloha Kakihiaka!
Just sent my email of support to Coach Mack.
Craig Stutzmann- if you do go to PSA- please say hi from me to freshman Saui Matagiese- Waimea High classmate of my son Byron “Ukuleleboi” !
G (China)- I cannot even watch the beginning of the stream. This whole circus act is not worthy of sentient human beings.

“Second-year quarterback Colt Brennan is one of Jim Zorn’s pet projects. And, while Brennan does have an unorthodox throwing motion, Zorn is looking elsewhere to try to improve his performance.”
…
““He’s trying to rhythm up my footwork and that’s what he’s been harping on,” he said.
Repeating what could be a new Zorn-ism to go along with “stay medium”, Brennan said, “Today he was getting my feet to rhythm up.”
It’s not second nature for him yet. “Hopefully after two weeks, three weeks I’m doing what he asks me and he’s happy with what I’m doing.”
So the bottom line is that if Colt Brennan wants to move up on the depth chart he will need to rhythm up.”
Congrats to Craig Stutzmann !!!
He has to take care of his family, and you can’t pay bills on broken promises. Take care of #1 and advance your career. ‘The Beast’ looks forward to seeing you on 9-26-09 when the Wildcats come to town.
You are a class act Craig, and you WILL do well. PSU is very lucky to get such a dedicated coach; you were a great inspiration to Ryan, and taught him that ‘hard work does pay off’. He has you to thank for a lot of his success, and as a parent, I truly appreciate you teaching the young men at Kalaepohaku about Respect, Responsiblity and Resilience.
Good luck Coach, see you soon 🙂
Aloha Kakahiaka!
Good luck to Craig Stutzmann at PSU.
GO STUTZMAN!!!
Nothing is given to anyone in life, everything must be earned. It appears he didn’t put in the effort last season that coaching requires.
Good Morning Tsaikos!!
Good Luck to Stutz.
Whoever comes in to coach the receivers, it’s going to have to be a grad assistant again since I don’t belive there are any full time positions available?? Or they may move coaches around?? Timing is not good with camp opening shortly.
Go Stuz, good move, learn a lot and come back home when you can.
Ai-Yah, #21,what are you talking about?
I’m not going to get into the details, but I think everyone knows what Bulla is referring to..
Best of Blessing to Craig… Kalua Noa must be elated…
Ai-Yah,
Interesting.
From where was your vantage point to evaluate said “appearances”?
In the cot next to him sleeping in the dance hall as a monitor during camp last year? In the film room with him all the hours breaking down video? In countless coaches’ meetings before, during and after the season? At all practices and meeting with players before and after practice? Attending classes with him while working on his Masters? Attending PR events to promote the team? Away from his family on road trips? Attempting to construct a family budget with a wife on maternity leave with a GA stipend?
Just wondering?
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
I concur completely with Garret’s number 8 post. Best of luck to a truly deserving young man.
Nuff said.
Ai-yah,
Including trust, honor and the value of one’s word.
Ai-yah,
Whoa! Hold up! Maybe you’re right; Glanville musta been looking for someone who wouldn’t be able to carry his weight to fill a position on HIS staff!
Thanks for your “thoughts”!
Stretch,
Well, sometimes you just don’t realize what you had until it’s gone!
BigWave,
I’m guessing Kalua and his Dad feel that way. Funny how that one worked out!
Wie shoots a final round 69 in the British open…she was picked for the Solheim cup team……
Good morning everyone!
Best wishes for Craig Stutzmann in getting a full time coaching position.
d1 his vatage point was right beside da buggah who are talking stink about Coach Mack.
Just wondering?
Thanks, curveball!
Wow… peeps are a little jumpy this morning…
oh wait…. I haven’t had my kope yet!
I’m just sloooow!
Ai-Yah=wf2?
Best of luck to you Craig, mahalo for being a Warrior.
What is Timmy Chang doing these days? He would have an interesting perspective on receiving.
Congratulations and best wishes to Coach Stutzman – go learn all you can, take care of your family, and come back home!!
Mrs A-House sent an email to Coach Mack yesterday outlining our total support for him and the Warrior team.
Stretch:
Maybe Coach Ron Lee can work again with the receivers as he did with JJ.
Or, Coach Mack can transfer Timmy Chang to coaching the receivers.
As for Ah-Yah’s remarks, all I can say is “ah-yah” which of course is Chinese for “good grief”.
To be a graduate assistant at UH, the coach has to be admitted into graduate school at UH…it could be hard to get anyone admitted before the Fall semester starts, which would mean that Ron Lee may just have to pull double duty as WR coach and offensive coordinator.
Mac cannot just pick who he wants to be a graduate assistant because of the requirement that the coach has to be admitted to a graduate program. That really limits the choices that can be feasibly suggested.
I would say that being one GA short this season would save UH money…but graduate assistants really don’t make much.
Best of luck to the elder Stutz!!!
I may have missed the daily countdown from “them”, but where the hell was Dr. Dan Robinson DDS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Besides, I think they should have kept picking the Top 5 with their panel of “experts and consultants” as opposed to letting the Top 5 be chosen via online polls.
I do believe Colt should be #1, but that is my generational bias, but at the same time no one can deny what he did for us.
However I have to agree with Papa Leahey in that I also believe that the Warriors that came before like Al Noga and Tommy Kaulukukui didn’t get too much of a fair shot at #1 because the on line voting caters to a certain demographic more (a young demographic) and it is not quite indicative of where they truly should be in the scope of UH football lore as a whole.
It was a daunting task to try to do justice to the thousands of past Warriors by ranking 100 of them, but if they went with one formula of naming 100-95, they could of gone with 5 more right?
Best of luck to Craig Stutzmann at Portland State. I do agree with Garret that the graduate assistant position being vacated by him might end up going vacant. Perhaps he makes a comeback in several years time…..
djmitcho: Still get opening for the fantasy football team?
A fine Sunday to all!
Best wishes to C. Stutzman.
d1, et al . . .
re: #21.
I am guessing the poster misinterpreted the comment about broken promises being the fault of Stutz rather than that of the UH.
“Indian giver”
Okay what kind of penalty is she going to be biven?
http://omg.yahoo.com/photos/week-in-photos-july-27-august-2-2009/3104?nc
biven = given
I know about the opprotunity that was given to Stutz to be a full time coach. He didn’t take that opportunity, instead, sat back and thought it would happen automatically.
wafan,
If not for the entire context of Bulla’s post, that may be possible.
Ai-yah,
To you “sat back” is doing all the things a GA would normally do PLUS what a full-time coach (which is what Mac said he considered Stutz to be) does?
But again, apologies, Glanville certainly does see it your way.
Hmmm…I wonder who brought up his name to begin with?
d1 . . .
I agree.
I thought the time difference might have been a cause for “overlapping” posts. But they are separated by 32 minutes.
An issue of contextual miscues?

HAUOLI LAHANAU, ROB25!!!
Kazz- I agree, Dan Robinson is among the missing…
ST- I was delighted to see Lelie back home in Hawaii. He is my pre-Colt favorite Warrior! Do you think there’s a chance that he would be interested in coaching?
Lelie should go back to the NFL. He’d be a great fit with the Colts and Manning playing on fast turf in Indy.
d1 & Bulla – Are you guys trying to say that Coach Mac is not a man of his word?? If Stutz did what he should have done last season, his new title would be UH assistant coach, not at PSU.
I know you guys have a St Louis connection with Stutz and will back him up, but this one’s all on him

“The quarterback play was very shaky this morning. Jason Campbell was under constant pressure, even in the 9 on 9s, when the defense was only rushing two. For the most part, he still appears to be holding on to the ball too long, which led to two interceptions, one by Chris Horton, one by Byron Westbrook. Todd Collins did not perform any better, getting picked off by Michael Grant. Colt performed relatively well against the third and fourth teams, and the fans love him for it.”
And then…
“The quarterbacks also looked relatively sharp as well. With that being said, there was no offensive line or defensive line involved.”
http://www.extremeskins.com/showthread.php?t=293120
“CB: He got less of a chance today. In team drills, CD came in before CB. Colt got the reps yesterday, Chase got the reps today. It does say something that they are alternating giving Chase and Colt reps.
He played average. Had a few pretty good throws, some bum throws. Footwork is what I said yesterday, much improved from last year, but not good. Ploddy and mechanical is how I would describe it. He went through read progressions. He had a few very good throws, but none that were as good as the ones he had yesterday.
He tripped over his own guy once, and dropped a snap during drills throwing to RBs against air. Neither of these things is good.”
Re Chase Daniel:
“Look out for this guy. I think he’s going to push Colt for that third spot if he keeps playing the way he’s playing.”
I don’t see how Lelie could get admitted to UH in time for this season. Plus, since he left early did he get his degree yet? If not, he’s not eligible for a graduate assistant spot.
Nate Ilaoa would be an excellent choice since he’s already in Hawaii and he was trained as a slotback when he first came to UH.

Penn State is taking some criticism for their nonconference schedule, but they say they are taking it easy out of conference to win a national title.
Consideration for receivers coach. Darrack Branch. He’s available right now. You have to be a good teacher. Another good one might be Dane MacArthur but I don’t know where he is.
According to this depth chart, Bess is starting training camp as the backup to Camarillo. That is how they started the season last year, with Bess use at slot receiver and the top backup at WR. Unfortunately, the way that Miami runs its offense (lots of sets with 2 TE or a TE and FB), Bess’ stats at slot receivers were MUCH lower than when he was a starting WR.
I thought it was mentioned here that Nate is back to finish up his B.S. or B.A. degree, if so, he is not eligible for the GA position.
Another Florida paper has a report from Miami’s practice today.
Ralph,
I was hoping that Nate finished up his degree this summer…if not, then he’s not eligible for the GA position either.
Happy Birthday Rob25!
Happy Birthday Rob25!!!
The trouble of hiring a WR coach without having a spot on the coaching staff available is that you need someone who can work a full-time job (coaches actually put in well more than 40 hours per week) but work basically for free with no health coverage or other benefits. That rules out a lot of people.
The other problem is that there is no guarantee that someone making that sacrifice will have a spot open up for them next year…what if none of the other coaches want to leave?
CRW,
yes, email me. djmitcho at yahoo dot com
Good news on Wie getting her wish to make the Solheim Cup team, shot a great 3 under today.
If they replay the news conference announcing the captain’s picks take a look at Paula Cramer in the back when Daniel announces Wie. Again focus on Cramer’s facial expression & body language when Wie gets the microphone. Two times & same reaction by Cramer, is it just me or is there something there?
Liz,
Thank you for posting #56 and #62. It sounds like Colt’s hope to have a shot at the #2 QB spot are over before the preseason even started. Plus, it sounds like Zorn likes Chase Daniel a lot and is trying to give him enough reps by taking reps away from Colt! It will be hard for Colt to improve if he doesn’t get practice reps.
If Zorn tries to alternate preseason games for Colt and Chase, that would mean that neither would get enough valuable preseason experience to maximize their development. Then the winner (Colt) would be the #3 spot without reps during the season, so losing out on preseason and training camp reps will really set him back significantly!
djmitcho:

Happy Birthday Rob25!!!!!

“COLT BRENNAN
Day two started rough with a 5 a.m. wake up call for a random drug test, but I was able to get another hour of sleep or so. The morning practice was long, I felt bad for the receivers!!! The fans were awesome and were in full force and watched us go hard for two hours. Besides one dropped snap and one play called wrong, not a bad day. It was a better day today than yesterday; let’s hope that doesn’t change. They’re predicting heavy rain for the afternoon practice.”
Good afternoon tsaikos. Congrats to Coach Stutz and hope he gets the PSU job. Ashley is a great receiver, but his work ethics are questionable, so I would not consider him for the GA position.
Happy Sunday, Tsaikos. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Rob25. Woo hoo!
Best of luck to Stutz in Portland.
CRW – hope your #80 post means you’re playing in the Blog Bowl. Homey, someone sent you a message on the Blog Bowl board last night. 🙂

COLT WATCH- another opinion:

“- CB looked better, which knowing me, is a pretty high compliment. His release point is generally higher, I say generally because he still has a tendency to drop and throw sidearm…he did it at least twice today during drills. He has a stronger arm than I’ve been giving him credit for, though his deep passes have a tendency to wobble. Had at least one gorgeous deep bomb that he dropped right in Malcolm Kelly’s lap, over the shoulder, perfect.
Oh, and for those who care, during one drill, not full team, Colt was playing safety. So if he doesn’t supplant JC, the cult can still live on.”

Garret, saw uncle kaname today at costco and he looks great.
re: #69,
Not sure about Darrick Branch or Dane McArthur as WR coaches for this team. I think it would be better to bring someone that knows and played in JJ’s run-and-shoot offense.
too bad the Solheim Cup doesn’t include the Asians and South Americans. Maybe the South Americans would be short handed though, not as many to pick from as compared to the Europeans, Americans and Asians.
Willie the American golfers, Creamer, Pressel and Lincicome have had their moments with negative comments toward Wie in the media. Wie got a lot of money and exemptions that the girls ego couldn’t accept, they sulked, fumed and made their views known to the golf channel. Once Wie wins her first tourney the “monkey will be off her back” and more wins will come sooner than later. “monkey will be off her back” is a cliche, not in reference to anyone or any group, etc.
Ai-yah,
It’s been over 5 hours since I presented a list of things he was doing and you only keep saying there are things he “should have done.”
For the sake of the program, please list things that the next GA “should do.”
Happy Birthday Rob25.
Your best birthday present is just a few weeks away! 😉
Hope you’re having a tremendous HAPPY BIRTHDAY weekend, ROB!!!
Did Lelie retire? Or is it because no NFL team wants him? I say he still has a few more years left in him.
Although it’s probably moot because he’s not in a grad program, I would not have favored Lelie despite all the great things he did for UH. He really didn’t have a lot of time in the RnS at UH and didn’t experience it in the NFL. Also, the great athlete often is at a disadvantage trying to teach less athletically talented young men how to do what he did because what he did was a product of his athleticism. I prefer the less talented person who became a good player because of a great work ethic, attention to detail, and lots of time spent watching tapes. I believe this kind of person has historically done well as coaches. Craig Stutzmann was a great get for receivers’ coach. We’re less well off with his departure, but..dang…nothing but well wishes for his future success.
I was just thinking of Britton Komine as a candidate, since he knows both the slot and wideout positions, but then I saw he’s in the Air National Guard.
Hmm, what is Ross Dickerson up to?
Happy birthday Rob25!
bulla…”you can’t pay bills on broken promises” WTF… are we now kicking people when they are down? And why is Billy Ray remaining with the Warriors if what you say is true? I sure as heck wouldn’t stay with a program if someone “lied” to my brother. All in all…good luck to Craig.
Jason
Thanks for coming up with the names I was trying to remember! Do you remember that Komine had an ROTC scholarship instead of an athletic scholarship? I’m sure he’s doing great things for the Air Guard.
Jason,
IIRC Dickerson joined the USMC
The Viking fan base is grateful to land an experienced R&S Coach! Looking forward to him giving Drew and the boys another view on this complicated offense!

Yesterday’s HI-5 SOS Drive for Kaimuki & McKinley High Schools’ athletic departments to help with their budgetary cutbacks brought in $650+ in actual redemption fees plus nearly $350 in cash contributions put in the little jar we made available for folks who wanted to give money.
Tomorrow, each school will get a cashier’s check for $500 apiece for their athletic programs.
Mahalo to several nearby bars for donating their bottles and to Slugger & Curveball for dropping off theirs.
Stayed tuned for similar drives in other O`ahu communities through the end of 2009. And, of course, don’t forget the mini-drives at the T-Gates throughout the football season to benefit PIAA, the after-school cross-country program at Dole Middle School, and the Dave Shoji 1000 Win Scholarship Drive.

“QB Drill
Jim Zorn’s wacky quarterback drills are back. These are perfect for training camp–they are a great attraction for fans.
Zorn gathered his quarterbacks midfield. As the QB dropped back to pass, he faced a barrage of pads.
Jason Campbell was tripped up as pads were thrown at his feet. At the last minute, another pad hit him in the back, and Campbell fell to the ground.
Todd Collins had his footwork impacted as he dropped back to pass. He stumbled, and his pass was off the mark.
Colt Brennan dropped back and did not have his mechanics interrupted at all by the barrage of pads. He maintained fluidity and completed his throw.“
d1 – everyone goes to work but you and I know there is a difference in the way people work. Some will put in the extra effort, some will do only what’s required. He didn’t take the extra step to prove he was worthy, he only performed as a GA.
Like KonaGold says, if Mac lied to Stutz, why would Stutz2 stick around?? He still young enough and has a lot of time to move to another program.
Ai-Yah…let’s agree to disagree on Craig….my opinion is that he did not get the position, because Coach hired two new coaches to address the team’s immediate need on the O line and Special teams.
Anyone know the Warriors football practice times this coming Thursday and Friday, please?

now that Mouse is retired I’m wondering if Glanville changed his offensive scheme/philosophy or is someone in place to teach the run and shoot.
anytime a young coach leaves, it is not easy, but if he or she wants to be a coach at a higher level, you got to go. this being coach stutzman’s first official asst coach job, he has a long way to go, but this is an excellent step for him. wish him and his family well and sometime in the future, he may return to UH. go gettum stutz!!!!!!
Congratulations to Coach Stutzmann. I wish him well at Portland State and think that Jerry Glanville is lucky to have him.

psu will run a version of the run-and-shoot that was used with the houston oilers and atlanta falcons. it’s a four-wide formation, but there will be more running plays.

Makes sense esp. now that Strasser is gone. Glanville had Strasser selected as WR coach/pass game coordinator and last season’s OL coach, Jim Craft as the QB Coach/run game coordinator. Now Craft is the OC and Stutz will be the WR coach.
Ron Lee had nice things to say about Stutzmann.
He said Stutz worked “his tail off,”and that he will be missed as much for his work on the field as for ability to break down videos and plays.
Happy birthday, Rob25!!!
Ralph,
Once Mouse Davis left there was no one who could teach the R&S; that’s what makes Stutzmann a great fit there.
On a brighter note for the Warriors, one thing that made it hard to leave was that Stutz was really excited about the group of receivers with which he was working. So much more speed!
now if Glanville has an Earl Campbell on his roster his offense will be in high gear. How about a white shoes Johnson at wr, that will definitely make the offense rock.
Ralph,
Eh, those guys kinda old already!
Houston Oilers, those were the good days, disappointed that the owners moved to Tennessee. Tony Holyfield’s son at MPI will be playing for SMU, and Tony played for the Houston Gamblers back in the 80’s when Mouse and June coached there. Now the Texans are the third team trying to make a go in Houston.

Sad to see Stutz leave. From what I observed at practice and at the Hawaiʻi Bowl, I thought he was a heck of a coach for such a young guy. But he has to do what is best for himself and his family. I hope he’ll get a chance to return soon, cause he’s got loads of potential.
Howzit Brew.
Howzit Jason. Ready for school?
It’s too soon! I’m not ready! I have everything planned out for this week, but I’m leaving for Portland tomorrow, so I won’t have too much time to plan for next week’s lessons. And I’m still not fully packed, so I’m stressing out. Aah! 😛
evening Brew..
Jason, you got your lesson plan ready for the kids. syllabus ready. Take your meds for your anxiety on the first day of class.
Got the syllabi. Got the lessons for this week. Got the substitute arranged. At least this week is all good. 😀
earl campbell, eh?
when he was here for the hula bowl, i ran into him at one of the clubs in waikiki. his thighs were as wide as my waist back then.
he was an incredibly built athlete.
Earl Campbell? Who’s he?
(I’m kidding, of course.)
nostalgia brings out Al..Campbell was the man in Texas, surprised he decided to retire early, he must have lost the desire
Campbell was pretty beat up by then, wasn’t he? Took a lot of hits, RBs don’t last long when you take a beating like that.
Re-Stutzmann
What I like about Stutzmann is that for such a young man he speaks very well. And to me it was like listening to a veteran coach. When I’ve heard him on Bobby’s Show and even here on the WB he comes across as speaking with such authorization and knowledge that it is impressive listening to him. If he can capture the audience listening to him, like myself, then I can imagine he has no problem capturing the attention of the kids he’d be coaching. He should do really well up there coaching in Portland.
The transition from Hawaii to Portland in regards to living conditions, mostly the unkind weather, is not going to be easy, though. And I’d bet that Stutzmann knows this in advance and it’s a testament of how he’s eager to get his foot into the coaching door.
Like everyone else here at WB I, too, wish him the best.
now we’ve got another recruiter to worry about. Rather than the JC route, PSU could be a good alternative for the locals for fb and an education.
Stutzman will really like that kavanaugh guy–same cut of the cloth, same work ethic–finds his targets
Good luck Stutz; one never knows????, might be another JJ in the making by way of Portland State??
I have to take a moment and compliment you all. I have long been impressed with how well you all know the players as individuals and how you support them in an unusually positive way. Today with the news on a GA moving onto a staff position at Portland State, I saw an outpouring of gratitude and support for the coach. I’ve read about the meetings of the ST board group and I think it’s wonderful that you enjoy each other. Your enthusiasm and the very personal way you support the team are incredible. I have been a lurker from Phoenix for a couple of years, posting once in a while when I have something to say. I have followed the Rainbows since the early 70’s, and I’ve seen most of the road games while they were in the “big” WAC, prior to the split, and a few since. I played at ASU, but I love football and find myself spending more time keeping up with Hawaii than any school. Many of the reasons are due to you all.
I have been treated with respect and have had other posters get back to me asking questions about my life and background, I appreciate the interest. This group differs from any I read or have been part of, you are very kind to each other, and your support for the coaches and players is unconditional. My hat’s off to all of you. SJ
SJBobkins ~ Back at cha!…Appreciate the words of kind consideration. You are certainly a part of why this blog is so successful.

good note about the sept 26th weekend. the truth shall set you free is all i can say for everyone else out there.
we wish coach craig the best of luck; i have known craig for years, and he was one of the most respected coaches that the beast ever played for. he is a class guy and Glanville and company are getting a steal.
regarding my earlier comment, it is what it is……life goes on.
happy bday to Rob25, enjoy!

One snap a clear…
Let’s go, Warriors!!!!
Bess is one of the punt returners in Miami’s camp.
Another nice mention of Bess.
Nice mentions of UH in CBS Sports’ review of the decade in college football.
Brysen “Bula” ( Fijian for Hello) Ginlack,
is already working hard @ practicing daily with the team, and @ Football camp, credits are good to go and he is excited about next year.
It’s a good year to reflect, rejuvenate and re-group for “Bula”…
