SALT LAKE CITY — Just checked into the hotel for the WAC Media Preview. It should be interesting since, as we reported before, half of the schools won’t be distributing media guides this year. Mack, Brashton Satele and John Estes don’t arrive until tomorrow. I guess it’s time to hit the mall.

It has been said athletic director Jim Donovan showed leadership by accepting a 7 percent paycut.
True.
But I think it would have showed courage to not take a paycut.
Take a furlough. Lead a Hi-5 drive. Defer part of the income.
But now it puts the heat on every athletic department employee, including coaches, to accept a paycut or else appear to be greedy. What’s a coach to say if asked?
Think about how much difficulty UH had in its recent hirings. It won’t be easier to attract quality coaches knowing that, after signing, there might be pressure to accept reduced pay.

If Mac takes a pay cut, does half of it go back to the boosters? Why does Jim Donovan need three associate ADs?
If I was in charge, I would cut some of those secretaries over there. When I worked in the UH system as a student, we did all the work and the secretaries would talk story all day. Take two hour lunch breaks and 1 hour coffee breaks in the morning. I would just replace the secretaries with student helpers who are cheaper.
RGM appears to have lost his starting spot.
LA Times story that says the Rose Bowl might have to take a non-BCS team. It talks a lot about Hawaii in the article. It would be super cool if Hawaii could go to the Rose Bowl.
Today’s update on Ingram. He’s missed the rookie reporting date and practice begins on Thursday.
Mac’s salary comes from the UH Athletic Department. Half of JJ’s salary was from boosters, but they decided to have all of Mac’s salary come from the Athletic Department when they did his contract.
Thanks Garret, I didn’t know that. Maybe we should get the boosters to pay for half now. 😉

The reduction in expenses would reduce the Athletic Department’s expenses, of course. That would also help UH in general because UH is covering the Athletic Department’s deficit.

I don’t think that the salary reductions being pushed for UH coaches will hurt hiring future coaches. I don’t think that there are any big coaching vacancies right now, and things will be quite different in a year or two.
There seems to be a big push to reduce coaching salaries at UH, especially for the non-revenue sports, so it isn’t like UH is going after the coaches who want the big contracts.
I think that it is great that JD took the pay cut, and how that the associate ADs take one also. I could see a problem for coaches to do so due to contract language…what if the coaches voluntarily donate 7% of their salary to the Athletic Department? That would preserve their salaries and give them a tax deduction, plus boost Athletic Department fundraising.
If UH sponsors could do some type of matching donation with the coach’s donations, that would be even better.

Are the coaches having some difficulty in determining the active roster for practice?? That is great, but following years will be a headache. Yahoooooooo!!!!!!!

Just finished taking care of breakfast for the kids. I’m glad that SDSU finally has a contract agreement to use their football stadium this year. It looks like the city and school decided to add a ticket surcharge to increase revenue…but this might hurt SDSU’s attendance (which was pretty pitiful before this).
Looks like SDSU will pay a much higher rent to use the stadium now. I’m guessing that the 5-year opt-out clause could be important after the Chargers leave Qualcomm Stadium because the city plans to tear down the stadium.
I have to finish my proposal in about 9 hours…be back on the bog after that.
How come Ben Yee is not in charge of Na Koa anymore? did he retire?
Why are the boosters now funding the same position supposedly paying $100k? I understand a need to pay someone to run Na Koa, but $100k? that money can be better spent on the PLAYERS
Ai-yah, if this is true about Na Koa, then I will really have to rethink about my membership next year. I did not join a non-profit org at UH, so someone can make money. I don’t think anyone should be paid to run NaKoa as this is money for a specific reason, football, not for someone to become rich off of us.
Now you know why the non-profit orgs are having great difficulty getting money from the public. When times are hard, like now, why should we donate anything to them when they think of themselves first.

Ai-yah and whitey: Ben is retired but still involved with Na Koa. When planning for the future with Ben’s retirement on the horizon, the powers that be — notably RB — felt that Na Koa could be expanded and increase its fundraising level only by hiring someone to do the job. I can’t say for sure, but I’m quite certain that the salary for the position is not $100K. (It’s lower, not higher.) In support of the paid position, it was stated that the amount of funds raised by Na Koa needs to at least double. That might be hard to do in the current economic climate. Long term, the move may pay off.

JD’s voluntary pay cut won’t do anything to affect the school’s standing in the job market. UH is in the same (kind of) boat as other public institutions that are falling in the same tide. The rest of the schools with the big endowments that aren’t being affected so much by the economy are gonna be hard to compete with anyway.

That’s an interesting view on the matter of JD taking the pay cut. My first instinct was to give JD some props for “leading” the way so Ill stand by that.
However I do agree with you on how it will, if it will, effect future coaching and department hires.
Also I too wonder if the athletic department will benefit from the savings on AD paycuts. They should right?

Caution to all planning to travel to Europe in the future. We’ve been totally *unsuccessful* in cashing traveler’s cheques. Apparently, there’s too much fraud and the banks listed on AmEx’s website are refusing to do it. So, when I get back home, I’m watching the exchange rate and, if and when, it gets to a good rate, I’m going down to the AmEx office and cash dem stooopid traveler’s checks for Euros. grrrr. 👿 Is it the same way in the US with traveler’s checks? If so, why even bother anymore.
OK, sorry for the rant. Good thing almost every place takes credit cards.
BTW, the local brew, Estrella Galicia, is cheap, but pretty smoooooooth. Also found some fairly decent wines for less than 2 euros.

Of course, if asked, you’re going to say: “I’ll take the paycut.”
I just thought it was unfair that they were put in a position to either give up pay or appear greedy.
The one thing I’ve never understood about the state’s budget shortfall is how it occurred and what exactly is in the budget. Budgets are based on projections, right? So who missed the mark by hundreds of millions?
And it doesn’t seem as if cutting salaries is a long-term solution. I’m still in favor of either furloughs or deferring part of the pay (essentially lending money — salary — to the state).
A paycut would be better in the end. A furlough would mean a permanent loss of pay, whereas, a pay cut, because of their contracts, the loss could be made up in better times. You could say, that it would be a deferred payment.

There was an article – either on the Google News or maybe Rick Steves – that most places (US and Europe, and probably Asia) will take charge cards more readily than Travellers checks.
The shops generally have machines that take the cards, check its validity and prints out the charge are suppose to be more trustworthy than just taking a check and looking at the signature and maybe an ID.

Regarding full time fund-raiser…
I think one of the reason why UH hasn’t seen more endowments is because they don’t have a full time fund-raiser. Capital campaigns can not be done by volunteers alone. Someone has to have vision and drive it. It is a wonder to me how they come this far with just volunteers. Then again Hawaii benefits to no end with so many charitable people, especially guys like Garret.
I do think there is a difference between an enforced pay cut (like what HA had to go through) and a volunteered pay cut. But the fact it is so publicized it seems that there is a sense that there is pressure to follow suit. In the end, I think you have to be driven by vision. It’s why Garret does what he does with a huge initial pay cut. However, since pay cut was voluntary, why make a big fuss in public domain. I know in hard times it can be difficult for so many families to see a cut when they need more.
In general, having a good budget and living within your means needs to be a standard. Americans can learn a lot about how Chinese save. I have seen a migrant worker live in such crummy conditions just so that they can save 70%-90% of the $150 they make a month. The money of course is then saved for their kid (which I personally don’t agree with). But if you extrapolate this on a national scale you can then see why they are the lenders to the world, let alone America.
wafan, Palin will not fade into the background any time soon. For one, she creates the headlines and loves the spotlight at the expense of her family.
No matter her IQ, she’s driven and will use her physical attributes to manipulate the men of politics to get what she wants. She WILL make a run for the presidency in 2012.

Looks like we will be in for another very exciting recruiting year with VJ Fehoko saying that we will be on his top 5 list once he shortens his list. I gotta believe that this is not just a token gesture and that Hawaii will have a pretty good chance at landing him. This will set a precedence and hopefully open the eyes of other recruits who are on the wall right now.
I gotta believe that with VJ Fehoko announcement we may have a chance with Micah Hatchie and the rest of the highly rated local players. It also looks like one of our early commets Kalen Freil (sp?) is moving up the star rating. He has just been upgraded to a three player by rivals.

I remember being in Japan Town in San Jose and had a friend show me some of the locals from HI. There was one shop that had manju and it made me really missed the people back on the islands. If not the taste, it is the memories associated with the taste.

I apologize if I offended anyone by mentioning the proposal that I was working on. I can see why someone would be upset if they thought I was talking about it to brag or something…but that really was not my intent! Why would it be a good thing to talk about having to work days and night for weeks on end without rest or pay? If my company wins it would be great and 4 people would get jobs, but the time spent on the proposal cannot be paid for by any of our grants so I’ve been the only one working without pay.
This deadline has consumed me for a month–I even worked on this stuff while I was in Hawaii! I’m sorry if I mentioned it too much on the blog…I tried limit the mentions, but today was a really long and tiring day and I wanted to explain why I wasn’t going to be on the blog in case anyone wanted to ask me something.
d1 is correct that UH Athletics would benefit is this proposal wins. This one is a big one and let us say it would be good for UH also.
Congratulations to Adrian Klemm! It would be great for him to be an OL coach at the D-IA level and I’m sure that he’ll do a great job. JJ is lucky to have him.

Will the new head of Na Koa really make $100k or near it? I guess they need a full-time fundraiser, but that news isn’t positive right now.
My personal experience with Na Koa lately isn’t good. I sent them an e-mail to ask a quick question from something on their website. I planned to send in my donation right after getting the answer to the question…but it has been quite awhile now and I haven’t received a reply.

i’m surprised the HA listed only 3 million in losses noted for tax purposes, i figured Hawaii residents dropped more than 3 million for the Boyd group to spend so much on Hawaii marketing. Too many people with pride, refuse to list their losses on their income tax or afraid to tell their spouse how much they really loss.
That would be losses to write off against winnings. Unless you win over threshhold and have to fill out the 1099, who’s gonna admit to winnings?

All I know is when Ben Yee was a volunteer (no pay) for Na Koa, I always got prompt answers to my questions.

Thank you for the Anniversary wishes! The timing works out perfectly because I was going to take a day off after my final deadline and the day after the deadline is my Anniversary!
Since it is a weekday, we’re not going to go out tomorrow night. But with Faith in summer school and Mika in preschool, we’ll be able to have a lunch date…part celebration for the work being completed and mostly Anniversary celebration. Lunch is a lot cheaper too, which is nice. I’m taking Lori to Brigantine for lunch and we have a coupon for a free appetizer too. The fish tacos are *really* good here, the view is nice, and we love seafood.

I guess things could be worse. The California Universities are really being hit hard, which could hurt their athletic teams in a lot of different ways…like APR hits because students cannot take the classes they need to graduate.

I am the Executive Director of Na Koa and was hired on 03/01/2009. I came out retirement to give back to the school and program that provided me an opportunity to play football and receive my degree.
My salary is a little more than 1/2 of that which is quoted in this blog including benefits.
I am an Ali’i member of Na Koa in terms of donation and I am starting a Na Koa endowment on August 30, 2009 as part of my vision of sustainable support for Na Koa Football Club.
Phone messages on the office phone are answered the same day (if possible) and on the cell phone within 4 hours. E-mails are answered the same day. This correspondence/communication timeline started on 03/01/2009.
The website will be pulled down and an ‘under construction’ sheet will take its place as the website had 3 year old information on it.
Ben Yee is my mentor and my friend for as many years as Na Koa has been in existence. He is invaluable in helping Na Koa streamline its operations, use General Accounting Principles in its fiscal responsibilities, and develop those connections to Warrior Football supporters, the University of Hawai’i Athletics Department, and the University of Hawai’i Foundation.
My goals are to help Warrior Football win the conference every year, win a bowl game every year, place UH Football into the top 25 Division 1 teams every year, and to graduate every senior UH Football player.
